Scarred Earth Architecture in the Age of the Great Acceleration
2020 Fall teamwork of 3 students Advanced Architectural Design Studio Ferda Kolatan
FINALIST Reviving Mines Competition organized by non architecture
The Zichuan district in Zibo, China was once a rural agricultural place but became heavily industrialized after mining operations for coal. Today, all excavations have been terminated, leaving behind scarred landscapes characterized by quarries, terracing, and other interventions within the geological and biological strata. In the example of Zibo mining site, “Scarred Earth” examined architecture’s potential in transforming large-scale defunct industrial areas into newly potent environments.
In our design, we embraced the hybridity of landscapes that emerged as a result of dissolving boundaries between natural and artificial processes, as opposed to the traditional design approach, which clearly separates the humanmade from the natural. We looked at the site through the lens of a traveller, who was exposed to postcard advertisements in the past, and is subject to Instagram posts today. Both the postcards and Instagram served to deepen the human vs. nature dichotomy. We propose the postcard of today in our renderings, which aim to
abandon this anthropocentric worldview. We plan to revitalize and repurpose the mining site with the inclusion of new functions such as a water filtration facility and a nuclear plant. However, it isn‘t the introduction of new functions at the focus of our design, but rather how we challenged ourselves to design spaces that embrace the inextricable processes of artificial and natural agencies. The strange aesthetic emerging from hybridizing the natural and the synthetic will be the source of enchanting the travellers to the newly envisioned sites of our current epoch.

Bauhaus Archiv Staab Architekten
designed by the first Director of the Bauhaus, Walter Gropius
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus’ founding in 2019, the BauhausArchiv / Museum für Gestaltung in Berlin will be expanding. Staab Architekten won the first prize in the competition with the design above, the implementation planning of which I have supported.
Waste to Energy 2020 Spring teamwork of 2 students Integrated Contexts & Mediums Alexandra Barker To localize waste managament and reduce pollution and cost from regional transportation networks, this studio examined the potential of a waste-toenergy facility at Pier 36, Manhattan. Our design porposal aims to increase awareness of waste issues by layering recreational programs onto infrastructural programs. Different spaces varying from small studios for rent, to sports facilities and to large exhibition spaces are housed by a building complex. The scattered modules create a porous landscape on the ground level and allow the river water to penetrate into the site. This modularity allow for spaces, where WTE processes are exposed to public eye while people have a river-side walk or visit one of the amenities housed by our complex.

Brooklyn Tower 2019 WS individual work Urban Qualities and Material Kutan Ayata
The evolving demographics and life-styles in urban centers demand new modes of living. During this studio I explored a Shared Live-Work Hybrid Tower project in Downtown Brooklyn, incorporating variations of micro units. The Tower has units for single/group of individuals and small families. The „pushed in“ volumes, so called „pegs“ characterize the tower and offer an unusual experience as common spaces or shared amenities. New potentials of adjacencies are thus offered within the tower‘s various parts that are connected via the „pegs“.

Filmhaus Berlin Bachelor Thesis
2017 SS team work of 2 students Chair of Urban Architecture Prof. Dietrich Fink
A new film world for Berlin. In order to attract wide audiences, the scattered institutions and event locations of the city need to be united under one roof. The main stakeholders are the Film Museum, the Film Academy and the Berlinale. The idea of building Filmhaus in Berlin has been confirmed and the project location is chosen as the neighbour plot of the Gropius-Bau. The program for the space consisted of cinema halls, exhibition spaces, offices, teaching areas and flexible spaces for the Berlinale offices.

danube apartments 2016 SS team work of 2 students Budapest Unıversity of Technology and Economics Department of Construction Technology and Management
The Danube bank in Budapest is in its most parts free from buildings and as a challenge to this situation an experimental design for a temporary housing / hostel concept by the Danube was required. Considering the historical and touristic value of the project site strong affects on the overall image of the site were to be avoided. In order to preserve pedestrian circulation on the Danube bank, the bank has been extended over the river and transformed into a major public space. The apartments placed below this public space can be reached by glass elevators or stairs digging into the hostel.

exemplary combination of units The project place is the Gellert Hill in Budapest, which is one of the few high points of the city and has an overview over Danube and many historical sites. The project requirement was to develop a concept for a hotel. The idea behind the project is to create a temporary and modular steel structure on the cliff of the hill, which will host the hotel rooms. The hotel rooms are created by the addition of the modules to each other in varied directions. The purple boxes in the volume model above show the different variations for combining the modules.

protohaus 2014/15 WS team work of 4 students Chair of Building Construction and Material Science Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Florian Musso
The task was to design a prototypical residential house with two accommodation units, the reproduction of which should be demonstrated through the density and the spatial quality. One of the units was to be designed for a family of four and the other one for a couple. In addition to that those units should have the possibility of interconnection in case they were to be used by a bigger family. The aspects of building material science and structural design were involved in the project task.
The Protohaus has two storeys. The whole first floor and half of the second floor belong to the bigger unit, which consists of an entrance area, dining room, kitchen, living room, the big bathroom and children’s rooms. The small unit is accessed through the outer stairs. In the floor plan, there are the entrance area, kitchen, living room, bedroom with a dressing room next to it.
