HALELUJAH! This issue celebrates our year one anniversary! In early 2013 we dropped our premier issue. Being the perfectionist I am, I was a bit nervous. Despite my having a writing background, the magazine having a top notch Creative Director as well as a host of wellrounded Contributing Editors, I was still wondering how we would be received by the people whom we most wanted to support. Fast forward to present day. We are overwhelmed by artists wanting to honor us by gracing our pages. We are blessed to have connected with inspired creatives from all over the world. With such diversity in the independent community there are always new and wonderful stories to report. It is our mission to show artists and content creators in a positive light. Our business of entertainment is just as difficult as it is satisfying. We look forward to continuing the celebration and the accomplishments of our creative comrades. THANK YOU to the artists and especially to our readers for your steadfast support. You make us what we are. #ByArtistsForEveryone

UCAN! Magazine had the pleasure of chatting with award-winning singer Kathryn F Hoxie – also known to her fans as KFHox – about what she’s up to and how she’s advancing her music career. This woman with the booming voice, and two graduate degrees to boot, actually lived out of her car for months – all in the name of completing a project. With such demonstrated motivation and drive, we predict BIG Things in the future for KFHox. UCAN! When did you know you wanted to be a singer? What was your inspiration behind it? KFHOX There was never a moment in my life when I thought of being anything else though I tried to take
many different paths attempting to do the “right thing.” I realized that the “right thing” was the wrong thing for me. When I lost my job back in 2009, I finally had the time to pursue my dream. I took the chance and ran with it.
UCAN! Congrats to you on winning the Rising Stars Magazine 2013 BEST POP ARTIST Award. Please tell
us about that.
KFHOX I’m generally considered an R&B/ Soul artist, but I was thrilled to be considered a Pop artist for the
simple fact that it means that my music is growing in popularity. It meant so much to be recognized for my talent as a singer and songwriter. I thank God, first and foremost, for the gift of music, and I thank the magazine for nominating me, and all the fans who voted to help make it happen. My music is for the people, so it means so much to have their support! UCAN! In your acceptance speech, you mentioned having gone through great adversity. Explain what you
meant. What keeps you going, in spite of this business and all of its instability?
KFHOX I lived out of my car for four months while working on my first project, LIGHT SHINES THROUGH ME. It
was extremely challenging, but through my faith in God and my perseverance, I successfully finished my project and planned my EP release party on 11.11.11, all while living out of my car. I thank my friends and fans who helped me get through such a challenging time. There have been several challenging situations since then, but my skin has grown thicker and thicker, so the hard times seem a little easier to handle lately. All I know, at the end of the day, is that nothing worth doing or having is ever easy...but it’s worth it! UCAN! What are you working on now? Where can we come to see you perform? KFHOX I’m currently working on my first full length project, JOURNEY OF A GemInEye which is scheduled for release in June 2014. I’ll be releasing the first single off the project, Give Love to Get Love in February, along with the music video for the song directed by Rodolfo Duran of DoneRightDigital.com. UCAN! What is your style of music? Who are your inspirations? KFHOX My music essentially falls under the umbrella of R&B/ Soul, but takes influences from Neo-Soul, Jazz,
Blues, Gospel, Hip Hop, and Funk. If I had to name all of my inspirations, I would need several days of your time. I’ll give you a handful of the first that pop into my head: Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Karen Carpenter, Anne Murray, The Doors, Alicia Keys, John Mayer, John Legend, Outkast, Lauryn Hill, Estelle. OK...let me stop. UCAN! We see you’ve studied at the University of Phoenix. Was that to have a backup plan? Do you believe
in that, or are you “all in” with regard to your music?
KFHOX I have two Masters degrees, a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) and a Masters of Manage-
ment. My undergraduate degree is in political science and pre-law. My parents always encouraged me to go the more conventional route. I kept trying to do the “right thing,” but now I’m just thankful to have all that education to apply to marketing, branding, and promoting myself as an artist. If I could do it all over again, I’d probably skip at least some of the school, but mainly just because of student loans. Education itself has never worked against me. I use everything I learn and apply it every day. UCAN! What do you see yourself doing in 2014? KFHOX In 2014, I’d love to make it overseas to England for a bit. I was a featured artist this past year on a
radio show over there, Ram Jam Radio. I have a few other contacts as well, so that’s been a working goal for now. I’d also love to return to Jamaica to do some more recording. Being able to record at Tuff Gong was an incredible, life-changing experience. Overall, 2014 is just going to be all about new music and enjoying the journey! facebook.com/kfhox youtube.com/kfhox twitter.com/kfhox instagram.com/kfhox kfhox.bandzoogle.com

Daniela Sanchez WORKING HARD & TURNING HER DREAMS INTO REALITY
Daniela Sanchez is a jack of all trades who has mastered many. She is an actress, a singer, and like other business savvy artists, she is also a producer. Venezuelan born, and Bolivian raised, Daniela is the head of the Latin Division of 5.2 Epic Films, the film company she runs with her business partner and manager, DC Coles. “Creativity was always a part of me, and I fell in love with the arts at a young age. Acting and singing were always a passion of mine and that feeling never left me,” she says. Her tiny 5’3” frame is a bundle of creative energy. As an Executive Producer, Daniela has captained the ships of not just one, but three successful film projects: A TORTURED LIFE, BARE KNUCKLEZ, and P.O.M.E. (Product Of My Environment). “My favorite [project] as of now is A TORTURED LIFE. I love this film because it was based on a true event. I wanted to share this young woman’s story who lived a rough childhood and a tumultuous life which ended in her death,” Daniela tells us. A TORTURED LIFE is based on the 2010 case of Betty Williams, whose body was found in a suitcase outside of the famed Rao’s restaurant in New York City. Daniela was not only the Executive Producer of this intense and gritty project. She starred in the film as well, playing the troubled young woman who died an untimely and preventable death. “I’ve always been drawn to biographies and stories that are real, raw and heartfelt,” Daniela says. It showed in her work. A leading New York City-based acting coach described Daniela’s performance as “solid and believable.” A TORTURED LIFE, written by LeonRaymond Mitchell and directed by DC Coles, received good reviews at both the International Film Festival – Manhattan and the Queens World Film Festival. Daniela’s other creative love is music. In that genre, she goes by the name Miss Silawett. She describes her music style as a mix of Pop, Pop Dance and Pop Rock. Her second EP (extended play), A TOAST TO THE FANS produced a single, BOUNCE that became a hit in both Sweden and Florida. “It was one of the biggest songs on my YouTube page with thousands of hits. It was also nominated as one of the biggest indie records on radio stations in Florida for dance music.”
Daniela liked the meaning of the word “Silhouette,” an outline that is dark against a light background – like someone indescribable, undefined, and an aura of mystery. To Daniela, spelling it “Silawett” gave it more of a feminine touch. This made it sound sensual – adding an edge and style to it. DC Coles suggested adding the “Miss” in front of the name. “I feel that way about myself and about my music. The name sort of describes the light and dark parts of me,” Daniela adds. Another highlight in Daniela’s career was to work with Dr. Maya Angelou. 5.2 Films was brought on by D. Ellis and Dr. Victor Seltzer of LS Management to film a promo commercial with the famed poet. The goal was to help provide relief to victims of Super Storm Sandy back in late 2012. The video can be viewed on YouTube under Dr. Maya Angelou Promo Commercial. “It was the best experience and opportunity ever!” Daniela exclaims. “We were invited to come to her home and film her there. She was so gracious, warm and very friendly. She is a phenomenal women and working with her was a blessing.” So what’s on the horizon for this young siren? She plans to make a stronger statement with both her music and her acting. FEED OFF THE ATTENTION is the first single to be released from her third EP. A major artistic coup, the single was produced by Grammy Award Winning producers Chris N Teeb. Daniela and 5.2 are now in post production of a feature they’ve just finished filming called THE BLACK VAN which stars Treach, Sticky Fingaz, JD Williams, Jay Parris, and Prince AK. She and DC Coles are also developing a pilot for a TV series with Dame Dash of Roc-A-Fella Records. They are working on yet another project with ZOO Productions and Films. “One of the biggest reasons I do what I do is to inspire others to dream, to fight for your dreams and to never give up on yourself,” she says. Daniela Sanchez constantly strives to create opportunities for other performers. With such action behind her beliefs, it is very possible to visualize success in the future of this talented artist.

Katherine (Kathy) Terrill has been busy since her feet hit the Manhattan pavement over twenty years ago. She was a regular on ALL MY CHILDREN playing Nurse Beverly in the 80s and Lolly the barfly in the 90s. Not missing a beat, Kathy appeared on the QVC Network for over ten years representing Brita water filters and other various products. Although she loved her time at QVC, Kathy turned from the long commute to West Chester, PA to working in New York City and more family time with her husband Bobby (who also works in the business as a Broadway stage technician). Since then, Kathy has appeared twice in day player roles on LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT. In 2012 Kathy was voted Best Actress in the Redeemer NYC Film Festival for her work in the film THIEF. In 2013 she appeared twice with Instant Shakespeare Company. Both she and Bobby are Associate Producers on Blake Cortright’s indie film THE 46ers: CONQUERING THE ADIRONDACKS. PBS has expressed interest in the film which is due to be completed this summer. http://www.katherineterrill.com

Five Words That Will Take
Your Career to the
Next Level
“How Can I Help You” — these five little words followed by a question mark are the vehicle that will drive your career in the arts from good to great. It’s much easier to sell and promote your work as an artist coming from a place of wanting to help and not from a place where you’re looking to make a quick buck. There is no longevity to your career or even a specific project without first asking your target audience (substitute: casting director, agent, gallery owner, producer etc. for the word “audience”) how you can help them. If you’re working to help your audience, it means you’ve listened to them and know what they want. People who are listened to feel supported and are more inclined to want to listen back when you have something to say (like when you’re selling them the benefits of attending your Techno-themed, post-modern ballet show). Listening and truly wanting to help your target audience will improve your customer service and improve your chances of retaining your audience or clients as customers for a longer period of time. Lastly, and most importantly, if you develop your career in the arts without asking your target market how you can help them; you have just created a product for no one. Selling is all about providing a solution to your audience’s problems; and if you don’t know what their problems are, then you can’t make an effective product (art) to sell to them. To really practice what I preach, I have to ask you, “How can I help you?” I promise to listen and either help or find someone who can. Josh Rivedal is a career coach and marketing consultant for artists. He is also a regular contributor for The Huffington Post, an author, actor, theater producer, playwright, and international public speaker. He wrote and developed the play, The Gospel According to Josh, which has toured extensively throughout the United States and Canada and is making a return Off-Broadway in May 2014. His memoir The Gospel According to Josh: A 28-Year Gentile Bar Mitzvah was published by Skookum Hill in September 2013. As an actor, Josh has lent his voice to numerous national television commercials, audiobooks, and animated projects including several characters for James Klise’s The Art of Secrets, the narrator of Julianne Moore’s Freckleface Strawberry and the Dodgeball Bully, and description for seeing impaired children for NBC’s Tree Fu Tom. He has spoken in more than twenty-five U.S. states and two Canadian provinces on mental health, stigma, and suicide prevention.
Nicole Duncan-Smith Shows Us That it IS Possible to Raise a Healthy and Well Grounded Child Star We know the stories all too well. Children who are famous and rich beyond imagination. Mansions, luxury cars, private jets…. Photographers rushing up to them on red carpets to capture their images looking polished and perfect. There is no financial limit to what these young people can have and do. What we don’t see is the emotional toll that most of these kids pay for their fame. Michael Jackson often said he never had a childhood. Being blinded by his wealth, many laughed at and dismissed his claim. Christopher Knight, aka Peter Brady, said on camera that he felt his mother was “pimping” him out. The fact is a lot of child stars lose their right to live without worry at way too early an age. Child stars are often thrust into the unfortunate role of becoming the financial providers for their entire families. Justin Bieber’s recent arrest for racing a rented Ferrari, while under the influence of alcohol and drugs, is an all too common scenario for young entertainers. We as outsiders have no clue as to what’s going on in his personal life, but it is safe to assume that strong family support is not at its core. We decided to talk with the mother of a child star on the rise. Nicole Duncan-Smith has a completely different approach with regard to her daughter’s journey in this industry. She is determined to keep her child artist a child first and an artist second. Her daughter’s name itself is an indication of just how much this child means to her parents. “‘Eden’ means the paradise and delight of God, and ‘Sanaa’ means masterpiece or sacred art piece,” Nicole says, confidence strong in her voice. She and her husband Greg Smith have always thought of their daughter as someone precious to whom they should dedicate their lives. Such a deep-seated display of love is touching in any circumstance. However, in this fast-moving business of big egos and even bigger money, for starlets to have parents like this is priceless and beyond rare. Eden Sanaa Duncan-Smith has accomplished many things at the ripe old age of fourteen. She has appeared on television, on screen, and recently on Broadway alongside the likes of Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. But unlike many of the young starlets we read about today, we do not hear reports of Eden being arrested for drug possession or doing a stint in rehab. The difference here is that Nicole and Greg – along with the entire family, support their child and keep the work all about fun and discipline. The adults take responsibility for the living expenses. “Don’t quit your job.Your child should never [have to] be concerned about making sure the lights are on,” Nicole states.
Developing and grooming a child star should be a family affair, one that’s all about giving to the child and not getting. Sadly this is not the normal mindset of the majority of parents seeking to get their beautiful and talented children in front of a camera. “I would say that we all sacrifice for Eden and do more for her than we do for ourselves. But we do not regret it. Doing for her is doing for ourselves, as we believe that she is a gift of God and a reflection of God,” Nicole tells us. Nicole is quick to acknowledge everyone who has a hand in her child’s development. “The entire Spagh-Eddie (pronounced Spaghetti) Factory works lock and step to make sure Eden has the support needed to make her dreams come true. Eden’s father and paternal grandmother are just as involved in her career as I am,” she continues. As far as her life in entertainment goes, all Eden needs to worry about is honing her craft, learning her lines, and mastering the choreography. “We try not to make it seem like a business. We keep it fun and adventurous, not just for her but for the entire family,” Nicole points out. A key to any starlet surviving the tidal wave of fame is for he or she to have a strong sense of who they are before the fame hits their lives. When it comes to Eden’s integrity and character as a human being, Nicole scoffs at the idea that any of it is shaped by her being in the entertainment business.
PREVIOUS SPREAD: Eden in character as the young Nala in the Broadway production THE LION KING. THIS PAGE: Opening night of the Tony award winning play, FENCES in which Eden played Raynell alongside A-List actors Viola Davis and Denzel Washington.
“Being in entertainment has not shaped our daughter. Being a child of God has. Being a great student has.Working with people who love and honor her, that’s shaped her in our opinion.” Nicole goes on to list an entire village of people whom she credits with helping Eden to stay grounded. They include: Rhonesha Byng over at the Huffington Post, actress Viola Davis, Kelly Gonda from Broadway Kids Care, Nayilah Biamby, Lakai, Shani, Eddie, Kevin and Dina, Hassan and all her dance teachers, and Rev. David K. Brawley. About a month ago, TMZ featured Eden and talked about how she just wrapped on the remake of ANNIE. This is a major motion picture which stars Jamie Foxx, Quvenzhane Wallis, Cameron Diaz and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. TMZ reported that Eden could go on to make a million dollars should ANNIE become a trilogy. That’s a big payday for anyone, especially a fourteen year-old. Nicole sets the record straight. “The information that TMZ released was wrong. ANNIE will not be a trilogy, and Eden will not be making a million dollars on the movie.TMZ is all about sensationalism, but we do appreciate that they took interest in our daughter’s career.” From the looks of Eden’s career to date, major financial earnings are quite possible, and even likely. How will Nicole and the entire Spagh-Eddie family handle such success? “If she was to be blessed with a large payout from her acting, we would give a ten percent tithe to our church and make sure that Spagh-Eddie Factory team invests it wisely.”
2014 holds big things for Eden Sanaa Duncan-Smith. It goes without saying that her mother will keep an ever watching eye on which projects she will accept. Eden will be working with WAT-AAH beverage as a brand ambassador. She will also continue writing for Tween Girl Style Magazine and is currently working on a book tentatively titled, iBeam: Spotlight, Limelight, God’s Light Remaining Grounded by Godly Principle While Chasing Your Dreams of Stardom. As a member of Purelements: Evolution in Dance - Junior Company, she has been chosen to perform with Aubrey Lynch in his Show Kids collective. Two weeks ago on February 3, Eden performed in the AEA African American History Month staged reading of FOUR LITTLE GIRLS: BIRMINGHAM 1963. This performance took place at First Corinthian Baptist Church. Parents need to pay close attention to the above formula. For Nicole Duncan-Smith it is proving successful in cultivating her daughter for victory in this business of show. There is a lot of work available for young people to entertain us. And just like any production, there is a lot more behind the scenes than what viewers will ever see. The triumphs can be glorious, but the pitfalls can be devastating. It is the responsibility and obligation of the close adult(s) in a child star’s life to carefully guide and direct them. Nicole offers one last bit of advice. “Believe in God. Let your child be the star and [you] fall back. Lastly, have fun with your child. They won’t be children for long.” Check out a sneak peek of Eden in this trailer from the movie ANNIE, which is slated for release in December 2014. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvFFEvCeXgI

ASTROLOGY NUMEROLOGY NOW
2014...THE YEAR’S HIGHLIGHTS
By Z . S TA R M A N
It’s the first anniversary of UCAN! Magazine and I’m pleased and proud to be its contributing astrology / numerology editor. Here’s a preview of some of the astrology and numerology highlights of the year 2014. THE YEAR 2014 from a numerology point of view is a number SEVEN Universal Year. 2+0+1+4 = 7. It’s a year that favors those born on the 7th, 16th and 25th of the month and those born under the constellations of Pisces and Cancer. A number 7 universal year is a period of reflection and introspection to dig deep inside oneself and discover who and what you really are and what your purpose is in life. The number 7 is a very spiritual number also and 2014 will be a year where many will “find God or Goddess.” Above all, it’s a year where everyone should develop their intuitive side or sixth sense and rely on that little voice in the back of their heads when it speaks. Usually it’s right. THE YEAR 2014 major planetary events will bring us 3 Mercury Retrogrades When Mercury is Retrograde it appears to be traveling backward through the zodiac. In actuality this is an optical illusion. Mercury’s retrograde periods can cause our plans to go awry and failures with electronic equipment. However, this is an excellent time to reflect on the past. Intuition is high during these periods, and coincidences can be extraordinary. Any planetary retrograde is a cosmic timeout, a period of readjustment for everyone on Earth. The first beginning on February 6th – 28th in the constellation of Pisces retrograding back into the sign of Aquarius lasting until Feb 28th. The second, in my opinion, will be the hardest one to endure during June 7th – Jul 2nd in the constellation of Cancer retrograding back into the constellation of Gemini. The last, which will occur October 4th – 25th, in the constellation of Scorpio and will retrograde back into the constellation of Libra. All the fore-mentioned Sun Signs in which these retrogrades will occur are excellent times to reflect on the past. Intuition is high during these periods, and coincidences can be extraordinary. Jupiter, the planet of luck abundance and optimism will go direct on March 5th in the constellation of Cancer and stay there until July 16th - when it enters Leo. Sun Sign Leos and those with Leo ascendants in their natal charts should benefit from Jupiter’s blessings. Be careful Leos not to gain too much weight or spend too much money. Scorpio and those with Scorpio rising will have to wait until the end of the year to finally get some relief when Saturn, planet of restrictions, limitations and discipline leaves the constellation of Scorpio (briefly) on December 23rd (after a 2 ½ year stay) when it will enter Sagittarius. Because of the Saturn opposition to Taurus and those with Taurus rising sign can finally exhale because this aspect has taught them hard lessons pertaining to their marriages and personal relationships with other people. Capricorn and those with Capricorn rising signs, Pluto in the constellation of Capricorn will continue to transform your lives throughout the duration of 2014. Mars in the sign of the Libra until July 27th will ask Sun Sign Libras and Libra rising sign natives to bite their tongues and to think before they speak and avoid physical or verbal confrontations. THE YEAR 2014 from a Chinese Astrology point of view it’s The Year of The HORSE that began on the “new moon in Aquarius” on January 31, 2014 and will last until February 18, 2015. Those born during or after the new moon in Aquarius in the years 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, and 2002 can look forward to twelve months of good fortune and new beginnings. If you’re horse born in the fore-mentioned years it’s time to “gitty-up” and keep those hooves moving especially those born under the constellation of Sagittarius “The Centaur” or have Sagittarius rising in their natal charts. The Horse year is about freedom, returning to nature, and enjoying life and life’s adventures. Since horses can be impulsive, be on guard against the mentality of act now and think later, avoid the mistakes of overspending, enabling others, and denying when there is a problem. Watch for major news about celebrities born in the year of horse. Horse Year Celebrities: Clint Eastwood 1930, Aretha Franklin 1942, Oprah Winfrey 1954, Halle Barry 1966, John Legend 1978, and Jennifer Lawrence 1990. The 2014 celestial event eagerly awaited by many, especially those residing in the Northeast, Midwest and Southeast parts of the USA occurs on March 20th at 12:57pm EDT 9:57am PDT as the Sun returns to Earth’s equator marking the beginning of the Spring Equinox as it enters the constellation of Aries where it is exalted.
