DENISE THOMAS-KERSEY “’I can’t’ are two words that have never been in my vocabulary. I believe in me more than anything else in this world.” – Wilma Rudolph What a powerful mind-set to have! That philosophy lead Ms. Rudolph to become the first American woman to win three gold medals in track and field during a single Olympic Game. Did you know that at four years of age she suffered from infantile paralysis and had to wear a brace on her left leg and foot until she was nine? She wore an orthopedic shoe another two years after that because her foot had become severely twisted. By the time she was twelve years-old, she had also survived bouts of both polio and scarlet fever. And yet her physical accomplishments rose to levels that millions of healthy people can’t even fathom. Lacking in self belief (aka fear) kills more hopes and dreams than failure ever will. The interesting fact is that the very things you fear have no existence outside of your own head. Really. What have these conjuredup beliefs cost you as an artist: not going for those parts that stirred your soul; not seeking funding for that film project that your gut knew was a winner; not interviewing for a job and seeing someone of lesser qualifications get it; not being with that special someone whom you really love; growing more and more frustrated and unsatisfied as the years go by? Wilma Rudolph transformed from being disabled, to having one of the well-conditioned bodies in the world. As an artist you already have an intense love and passion for what you do. Why can’t you use that to overcome those fears that keep you stuck? You are worth greatness in your artistic expression! You can live your dream. Really, UCAN!

HIS VOICE
Jason Hendrickson’s undeniable talent with his powerful and inspiring melodies can make even the most skeptical people become fans of praise music. During a performance at the TBN Theater, he and his group Nusoundz raised the roof and had the most uptight, suited-down audience members shouting praises to God. UCAN! Magazine is not a religious publication by any means, but our team members whose are Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Taoist are all strong believers in the Creator. With that said, we were compelled to find out more about this man of God and what keeps him so motivated. UCAN! At what age did you realize you were musically gifted?
JASON I realized I was musically gifted at the age of five. I started banging on the pots and pans in my mom’s kitchen and I had a gift to create beats with the pans, and spoons. I started playing the drums in church when I was five, and I have been doing music since then. UCAN! When did you start singing? JASON I started singing when I was very young in church, but I started singing professionally in 1996 when I went on a tour with an artist by the name of Queen Esther Morrow and The Harlem Gospel Singers. I went overseas with them and got bit by the singing bug. UCAN! The music you sing, praising God, do you think it came more from celebrating life or as a way to handle and overcome life’s obstacles? JASON Honestly, it’s a combination of both. The music I sing and my praise comes from the hard times in my life as well as the good. They both serve as a means to help me to cope with everything that I am faced with. The songs are usually a way for me to express my love for God thru the gift He has given me. And my praise is what I owe God regardless of where I find myself, broke, with money, alone, or with a lot of friends. Whatever state I am in I must praise!!! UCAN! AMEN to that!...Actors who have gone through a lot of pain in their lives make for very passionate and believable performers. Do you believe the same is true for musicians - especially singers? JASON Absolutely, I live my life by this motto “What’s From the Heart Touches the Heart.” I believe that pain produces passion; it makes your presentation as an artist more potent and believable. If you have not gone through anything and survived, then you really don’t have anything to write or sing about other than what someone else has gone through. Life is the source that supplies us as musicians with our tailor made story. The more you live - the more you have to create. UCAN! You recently filmed a pilot for a television show. Can you tell us a little about that? JASON I was blessed to meet an amazing woman of God by the name of Theresa Bryant. She introduced to me to an amazing group of people from two production companies: Allwrite Productions and Stuart Films. They wanted to shoot a show called STREET LIFE where they featured artists who have overcome hard times and humble beginnings to get to where they are now. I
was blessed to be the first artist chosen for this show. I am so blessed to have met these people. They were so nice to me - the new kid on the block. UCAN! From where did the name Nusoundz come? JASON I cannot take credit for this one. My Pastor, Darryl Hill, gave us the name. I went to him and told him that I was starting a group, and he said make sure whatever you do that it’s a new sound. I liked it so much I just kept that as the name and just changed the spelling. UCAN! Do you write your songs? From where do the ideas come? JASON Yes I write the majority of my songs, but I’m smart enough to know that when I ask others writers with different styles and even different ethnic backgrounds to come and write for me. It broadens my reach. The ideas for my songs come from several things, my personal experiences, some of my Pastor’s sermons, and my dreams as well. Sometimes I have dreams that I am singing a song, I wake up grab my cell phone or iPod and sing the song into my voice notes so I don’t forget it, and build from there. UCAN! Our team watched a few of your videos. One of our favorites was LET GOD ARISE. What was that video trying to say, especially in the workplace scenario? JASON That particular song and video is a message to everyone that feels they are defeated and want to give up. When you allow God to get up in your situations no matter how tough they may be, you are sure to come out on top. The work scenario was a lot of fun to do. I start out being bullied and abused by my boss, I then apply for a promotion and I get it, and I end up becoming my boss supervisor. So if you stay focused and apply yourself regardless of what obstacles are in your way, with God all things are possible. UCAN! We understand you’re an author too. Tell us about your favorite publication that you’ve written. JASON My favorite publication would have to be my 1st published book. “You’re Not My Daddy” Guidelines to Becoming a Successful Stepfather. I have been a Stepdad for 22 years now and in this book I share the struggles as well as the joys of being a dad in a blended family. I am very proud of this book, it’s in Barnes and Noble and I am sure when you get it, it will help you and encourage you. UCAN! Actually we have learned that you’re a man of many talents. You also have a television show. What’s it called? Where can we see it? JASON What was the motivation behind it? I have been blessed with so many tremendous opportunities in my career and this is one of the best. There is a brand new network called LifeZone TV and they air a weekly broadcast called “The Hallelujah Hour” which is a talk show. They bring in various guests from different fields of ministry and entertainment and I was asked to host one time. I went to do the show, they enjoyed me so much that the Network asked me to come and do it every month. You can catch the show every Wednesday night at 7pm on Verizon Fios, World Cable, and a few other stations. You can also catch it live online at www.lifezonetv.com. UCAN! What does being a family man mean to you? JASON Being a family man means the world to me. The family is your first ministry, and it is an honor to be a dad and a husband. To me it teaches you accountability, as well as responsibility. Having a family changes the way you choose in life. When I was single man I only had to think of myself, but now everything I do my family is impacted by the choices I make both good and bad. I find myself being more of a thinker now that I have other people to consider. UCAN! What do you have to say to young men who are tempted by peer pressure to be “playas” but who are really nice boys trying to be on the right track? What do you have to say to encourage them? JASON I would say never allow other people to push you into situations that you are not ready for. Stay focused and remember it only takes one decision to change the course of your life. There are so many people in prison because of one bad choice. Take your time, set short term and long term goals and go after your dreams. Most of all if you do make a mistake don’t allow anyone to make you a prisoner of your past. Get up, shake yourself be accountable and keep it moving, and for God sakes stop sagging in your pants…[Laughter] UCAN! Interestingly enough, you’re also a pastor. Tell us about that. What inspired you to go in this direction? JASON This wasn’t an inspiration this is a calling. This is what I was born to do, I have known it for a long time, but I ran from it and actually used my music to avoid doing this. I didn’t want to transition from what was comfortable for me, what I was good at which was music. I was afraid to walk into this office because I knew nothing about it, but when God has called you to do a thing he will equip you to do the job and do it effectively. Accepting this call I have learned that there are some things that you will never know you can do until you just do it. UCAN! Some of us on the team have had the pleasure of meeting your mother. How has she helped mold you into the man you are today?
JASON I owe my mom so much. She raised me to be a God-fearing man, a man that honors my family, and she taught me responsibility. I have been on my own for a long time now, but my Mom made sure I knew how to cook, clean and do laundry before I moved out on my own. The most important lesson I have learned from my mom is how to work hard. I watched my mom work two jobs, raise 5 children and never skipped a beat. My mom also instilled biblical teachings in me at a very young age and I believe that’s why I’m still in church today. So I have to say I am the man I am today because of my mom and of course God! UCAN! Were you a good child growing up? If not, what made you turn your life around? JASON I was a very energetic child, and that sometimes was misinterpreted as me being bad, but overall I was not a bad kid at all. I think time it what made the change in my life. I just grew up and began to understand how time was very precious and knew I had to start making better decisions. You know the old saying “When you know better, do better”! UCAN! We understand that you know what it’s like to actually be incarcerated. Many men never get over such a thing. Obviously you have. What was your inspiration? How do you teach from that experience? JASON Well I have been arrested a few times for minor situations. Thankfully I have never done hard time. I have to be honest and say that was a part of my process to become who I am today. I learned from those experiences that you have to be comfortable with who you are, and stop trying to fit in with other people to be accepted. UCAN! Last, but not least, say something to encourage young men out there who need encouragement - just like you needed it at one time. JASON The best advice I can offer is this: you will never be able to identify success without first identifying what failure is. Keep pushing and understand that hard work and diligence pays off. I teach from this perspective: no matter what your past may be if God allowed you to wake up today, that means God has purpose inside of you. Go after your dreams because dreams do come true!!! Above all, put God first. Keep God first, and He will take care of you.

On the spur of the moment, I got the opportunity to interview Italian film director, Andrea Lodovichetti. I didn’t even care what his accomplishments were. The fact that he is Italian was enough for me. I decided if he was like any of my experiences in his country, it would not be a disappointment. It turns out I was right. Andrea Lodovichetti is a gem in the world of filmmaking. His personality is charming and humble. His technical knowledge of cameras, lighting, and cinematography is mind-boggling. His impressive collection of awards is testament to all of the above. From early on his life, he knew that directing films was what he wanted to do. As a boy he would watch his father, a medical doctor by day, shoot and edit films. “Since I was really young I wanted to make what I am doing now,” he says with his wonderful Italian accent. “Day by day this big passion for moviemaking has been growing up in me.” Andrea is the first to admit that being in the art and entertainment community is very unique -- in countless ways. He was aware of its exclusive nature while considering the pursuit. “When you are young: ten, twelve, fourteen, it’s so hard because you can play basketball, soccer, or play piano. It’s difficult to make a film director at fourteen.” “So my second passion was the music. I tried to play piano for a while, in the meantime. But at eighteen, I told to myself, ‘OK, stop.’ I need to follow my passions and become a film director and not a piano man or something like that.” Most directors are quite concentrated when their craft is involved. Andrea is no exception. He strategized and planned his journey toward becoming a director, and then jumped into it with everything he had. He even did a year of military service while weighing his options. “I was a bit confused in that when I was twenty, I know I wanted to be a film director, but I knew it would be difficult. So I took time for that because when I take away, I need to be sure that I will succeed somehow. So I prefer to take my time and slowly make the decision.” Andrea studied directing at the celebrated Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, a program for which he had to apply twice. Located just in front of the legendary Cinecittà Studios, the school is one of the oldest of its kind in all of Europe and only accepts six new director students each year. Anyone in the European film industry knows having graduated from there is a major achievement. During the three year program, Andrea’s learning was extensive and intense. What he learned confirmed for him that he was in the right field. He was where he was supposed to be. What’s more, his thesis film SOTTO IL MIO GIARDINO (Under My Garden) garnered him extraordinary success. Honestly, when I first heard the film’s synopsis, I was only slightly interested. I’ve never been a big fan of movies that star mostly children or insects. SOTTO IL MIO GIARDINO has both. I loved the child stars in ET when I was a child, but my tastes have changed a great deal since then. Insects…never. I knew I had to watch the film solely out of obligation to writing this feature. Little did I know I was in for quite a pleasant surprise! SOTTO IL MIO GIARDINO is about a ten year-old boy who is fixated on the idea that the next door neighbor killed his wife and buried her body in the boy’s garden. Everything from the clarity (shot on a Super 16), to the music score, to the location, and the story itself was engaging and easy to watch. So much so that I forgot the star of the film was a ten year-old, and most importantly, that I was reading subtitles to understand the dialogue! As it turns out, I am in a long line of people who have fallen in love with this film. It has won awards at film festivals all throughout Europe as well as parts of Africa, Australia, China, India, Japan, and the U.S. In 2007, SOTTO IL MIO GIARDINO was one of twenty five hundred entries in the first year of the Babelgum Online Film Festival. Filmmakers from 86 countries submitted their films in hopes of being chosen to go to the next level. Films entered to the first round were shown on a dedicated channel on Babelgum, and users were asked to rate the entries. Entries were required to be professionally produced, but Spike Lee requested that the Festival also be open to film students.

After viewer selection, SOTTO IL MIO GIARDINO was one of seventy films – from the initial twenty five hundred - still in the running. A jury would view the top ten films in each of the seven categories: Animation, Documentary, Looking for Genius, Music Video, Short Film, Social/Environmental, and Spot/Advertising. The top three in each category were selected and presented to Spike Lee who chose the winner of each. On May 20, 2008 Andrea Lodovichetti was the very first winner of the Looking for Genius Award – noted in the Hollywood Reporter as the “main Babelgum award.” Spike Lee personally handed him the trophy, and Andrea walked away with the 20,000 euro prize for his efforts. Shortly after that, Andrea took his first trip to the U.S. He was again in a period of heavily weighing his options.
ON FEATURE OPENER: Andrea engrossed in directing one of his films. OPPOSITE PAGE: Holding the 2009 Italian Golden Globe Award he won for Best Short Film, SOTO IL MIO GIARDINO (UNDER MY GARDEN). THIS PAGE, ABOVE: Accepting the first ever Babelgum Looking for Genius Award from noted filmmaker Spike Lee. “In 2008 I told to myself, ‘now it’s time to move to the United States,’ but I wasn’t sure so I waited some years. I won the Golden Globe the next year, thank God.” Yes, SOTTO IL MIO GIARDINO won the 2009 Golden Globe in Italy for Best Short Film! Now in 2013 Andrea has decided to move to the U.S. He sometimes misses his country, but his sense of learning and adventure keep him motivated to always continue growing. “I love Italy because it’s my country. I will ever love my country. It’s my roots. But I think at this moment of my life, I am thirty-seven years-old, it was a good time to come to the United States to try. It will be a good experience for me no matter what happens.” Andrea looks forward to spending some time in New York and Los Angeles and strategizing with his manager Alexia Melocchi, president of Little Studio Films. As a proponent for actors, I had to ask him for which types of characters would he be casting. He said he was open to casting for whatever the story called. His main focus as a director burst through quickly after. “I don’t care,” he said. “I just want to make my job. To make movies.” If past awards and present fervor for directing are any indication, Andrea Lodovichetti will have to wear shades for the very bright future ahead of him.

Huge thanks to Lisa Lisa for taking a quick minute to talk with us while in the middle of touring. After all these years she still closesout shows and still has many of us dancing in front of our mirrors. UCAN! Tell us a little bit about how you got started in the entertainment business. How old were you when you first started singing professionally? LISA I started in this business at the age of thirteen. I met Mike of Cult Jam at the Funhouse (club). He took me to Full Force to audition. The rest is history for me. UCAN! Believe it or not, many people around the world had never heard of Puerto Ricans until I WONDER IF I TAKE YOU HOME was released in Europe in 1985. Did you feel any pressure of always having to “represent,” or was all easy breezy in that department? LISA Representing was never a factor! I just wanted to sing! Nothing was easy breezy, but I focused on the music and the love of my craft. UCAN! How has the business changed from then to now? LISA Then it was all about the music. Today if you don’t have a visual (looks, thin, age) you have no career. Which sucks!!! I miss the days of originality, live band, real music!!! UCAN! Do you find being over forty makes it easier or tougher for you in the business? Easier in that you’re much more “at home” and secure with yourself, and tougher in that the entertainment business is all about how you look, etc. LISA Yes and no. I am very secure with myself in all aspects. It is tough though when all people want is that visual. I love and like myself as is, but record labels want younger and thin. UCAN! You recently performed at Radio City Music Hall. You were definitely a fan favorite! How does it feel knowing fans still love your music after thirty years? LISA Doing Radio City was an anniversary for me! I did Radio City twenty five years ago. It was surreal. To think fans returned with their children and their children’s children. UCAN! You’ve reinvented yourself and started acting in the hit show BECOMING RICARDO. The team here at UCAN! was pleasantly surprised by your acting skills. What got you interested in pursuing that part of the business? LISA I majored in musical theater in High School. BECOMING RICARDO is a blast! It was offered to me by the [show’s] star and creator, Jesenia Bailey. I was the mom on TAINA for three seasons on Nickelodeon. I also was on the 300th episode of LAW AND ORDER. And I’ve done Off Broadway. UCAN! Tell us a little about your character on BECOMING RICARDO. Does she have any similarities at all to your real life? LISA I play Lydia, the star’s mom. She is spunky and “real” Puerto Rican! UCAN! You are very secure appearing with rollers in your hair, in a bathrobe, and not wearing glamorous make-up. Did you have any issues transforming from real-life pop princess to playing the mother of an adult woman? LISA Acting is fantasy! I’m able to transform into someone else. It’s not about me. It’s about creating and making the audience believe in this character. UCAN! What do you see yourself doing professionally next year? In five years? LISA Professionally I want to be the Puerto Rican Lena Horne! Ninety nine years-old and on stage! More music, tours, and acting! Yes! UCAN! Any concert dates coming up? LISA Check out http://www.ticketmaster.com/Lisa-Lisa-tickets/ UCAN! What kind of encouragement can you give to someone who wants to get into the business of show? LISA Stay true to your craft!!! THE AC LOWE SHOW
“God only knows where it started, or who said it first. It has stuck to me like glue all of these years.”
C O M M U N I T Y
I N V O L V E M E N T
UCAN! Magazine had the absolute pleasure of meeting Anthony Lofaso, host of the very popular AC LOWE SHOW - broadcast every Monday night at 7:00 p.m. on the City World Radio Network. The show’s name is in fact Anthony’s nickname from way back in the day, given to him by buddies with whom he played stickball. “God only knows where it started, or who said it first. It has stuck to me like glue all of these years,” he says with a laugh. Interestingly enough, the original AC LOWE SHOW was actually a standup comedy act. Everyone thought Anthony was very funny. He tried being a comic at several showcases and clubs that “would let almost anyone go up and make a fool of themselves in front of an audience.” Doing that took a lot of courage, and is something only a real people person like Anthony could do. “The act went nowhere and seeing as I enjoyed eating and sleeping indoors, I gave it up for a straight gig.” Mr. Lofaso is still very funny. Anthony’s journey toward being a radio host started back in the seventies during the U.S. revival of Doo Wop music. As an aficionado of Doo Wop, he often hosted many parties at which he would not only play the music, but he would also explain the history of the songs and each group behind them. “I did not have a radio show, but some friends of mine did at WRHU at Hofstra University. Using my friendship with such Doo Wop music stars as Earl “Speedo” Carroll of The Cadillacs, Jimmy Merchant of The Teenagers, and Earl Lewis of The Channels, I began bringing them to the radio show at Hofstra and assisting in interviewing them on the program.” “After a number of ‘false starts,’ we began broadcasting our own show, the AC LOWE SHOW, over WOEC in New York City. We would broadcast every Tuesday Night from 8:00 to 10:00 pm. We did basically the same thing we did at parties, play the music and talk about the history of the groups. The show was well received locally. It continued until the station went out of business.” At the same time, Anthony’s wife Lorraine (who’s a fine singer in her own right) formed a company called Ridin’ High Productions. She began producing acts at The Iridium, one of the premier jazz clubs in New York City. Over the next few years, Anthony and Lorraine would put on a music show on Sunday afternoons. “The greatest jazz singers and musicians in the business have all performed there at one time or another.” Anthony served as the host as well as the Associate Producer. Fast forward to 2009. After a successful radio interview about a history book he had written, Anthony was asked to co-host the show. He and the host worked very well together. The situation was perfect for Anthony, as he was still quite busy with various business projects. A few months later the show’s host, as well as the president of the broadcasting network, urged Anthony to create his own program. Again he was persuaded. The AC LOWE SHOW aired every Monday night following the show on which Anthony had been a co-host – bringing in higher ratings for the network on which the show first aired. “That was almost four years ago,” he adds. The AC LOWE SHOW, now on the City World Radio Network, plays all play all kinds of music from Jazz, to Hip Hop, to Opera. However, music alone is no longer the main focus. “Our main objective is New Yorkers and all of the wonderful things we do. We have had singers, musicians, writers, actors, filmmakers, politicians, poets, psychics, doctors, educators, comediennes and yes, even a language professor,” Anthony says proudly. “The variety and attraction of all of the different kinds of New Yorkers we feature encompass all aspects of our culture. In my view, each one is a lovely thread in the beautiful fabric that is New York.”

ASTROLOGY NUMEROLOGY NOW May--June 2013 By Z . S TA R M A N
May 2013 Highlights May 2013 is an ELEVEN Universal Month. Add 5 (May is the 5th month) + the Universal year 2013 (2+0-1+3) = 6. Eleven in numerology is a master number. Its vibration is higher consciousness spirituality and intuition. Raise your conscious and subconscious minds to new levels. May 2013 is the month of “The Eclipses.” The zodiac family will witness two of them in May. Eclipses signal cosmic endings, beginnings and changes. May 9 at 10:55pm EDT (7:55pm PDT) the Moon will pass between the Sun and Earth and a total eclipse of the Sun will occur. Although not visible to most on Earth, when it happens doesn’t mean we won’t feel its fallout. The New Moon solar eclipse in materialistic Taurus will force executive decisions and unexpected major changes pertaining to natural resources and finances whether government, corporate or private. Earth signs Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn restructure your spending habits now. Aires expect a financial windfall. The eclipse opposes Sun sign Scorpios and those with Scorpio rising signs challenging their intestinal fortitude in handling personal relationships, business, law suits and haters. Four heavenly bodies enter the constellation of The Twins during May 2013. Joining Jupiter already in Gemini are Venus on May 9 Mercury, Gemini’s planetary ruler on May 15, the Sun returns to Gemini on May 20 at 5:09pm EDT 2:09pm PDT and Mars enters Gemini on May 31. May 24 / 25 at 12:10am EDT (9:10pm PDT) the Earth passes between the Sun in Gemini and the Moon in Sagittarius for a rare nighttime view of a total eclipse of the full Moon visible throughout the Americas and Africa. Sagittarius represents spirituality, philosophy, long distance travel, laughter and big dreams. For those with Gemini, Libra, Aquarius and Pisces sun signs or rising signs this lunar eclipse will be a game changer. They’ll be a cosmic window of opportunity open to all to “Wish upon a star” and make a special spiritual connection In the hours leading up to, during and after the eclipse, To tap into that spiritual connection, during the eclipse avoid at all cost negative people, places and energy.
