“They came back with something like a million feet of film and no movie and sat around completely wiped out and exhausted trying to piece it together... and they had been pressured for a long time by United Artists to show them something. So they asked me to come out and they gave a screening the night that I arrived... “They made my coming out a pretext for finally showing the film to a few people: the United Artists guys, the studio guys, George Lucas, a few others. “...we all went to [Coppola’s] house in San Francisco for the screening. It was... four-and-a-half to five hours long. Very rough and unmixed. There was sound, but it was very crude... All the grease pencil marks for cuts were on there, and it was very long.” - MICHAEL HERR, NARRATION “You know, the first time he ever showed the movie to any of us, it was this great thing where we went up there to San Francisco... And it wasn’t put together, and it didn’t have the finished music in it. But it had enough of everything, and the impact was so strong... That’s when we knew we were going to be all right, whether we were indicted or not.” - JOHN MILIUS, SCREENWRITER Features: 2nd Audio Track: Muffled audio from the VHS source has been enhanced for improved listening. 289-minute workprint augmented by an additional 20 minutes of footage comprised of the ending of the finished film, the destruction of the Kurtz compound, and credits.
