The Criterion Collection, a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films, presents
He seeks, he encounters, he kills. Like a relentless Terminator from the spirit world , he finds his hapless victims. He (Robert Burke) is evil in the flesh, come to earth to collect souls to build his power. Through the bloody, ritualistic taking of human life, he restores his own. Richard Stanley (Hardware) directs this eerie shocker centred on the being’s unquenchable rampage – and on three people whose lives intersect that death-hunt. A woman on the run (Chelsea Field), her abusive husband (Rufas Swart) and a police officer (Zakes Mokae) have a simultaneous date with destiny. Will they be victims… or victors? Dust Devil was initially set to be released in the United Kingdom in December 1992. However, due to the withdrawal of Palace Pictures, Dust Devil was only shown for one week in one cinema in the United Kingdom before being released to home video. The American cut of the film released by Miramax removed about 20 minutes of footage. In 1993, Stanley acquired the Miramax print as well as the excised material and self-financed a cut which would resemble his original version. This version, dubbed The Final Cut. It was released on video in the UK by PolyGram, with the co-investor, Channel Four, airing it on their network on occasion. Richard Stanley has also personally presented it at various film festivals.
