A Team For Change On 2 May Anglesey will have a reduced Council of 30 councillors based on 11 enlarged wards. This is a time of change and a time for change.
Our Manifesto Page 4
The history of Anglesey County Council has been one of incompetence, bad behaviour and questionable conduct leading to investigations by the Local Government Ombudsman and audits by the Welsh Government, resulting in the removal of executive powers from the Council and the imposition of five commissioners.
The Council has been dominated by Independent Councillors who sadly have given Anglesey and independence a bad name. The Labour Party is fielding a team of 20 candidates, 16 of whom will be new to local government. Our candidates bring a wide variety of experiences of life and work: scientist; researcher; trade union officer; hr director; civil, mechanical and nuclear engineers; photojournalist; logistics manager; firefighter; business manager; paramedic; teacher; diver; local
government officer; historian; publisher and editor. We are committed to working in harmony as a team for the good of Anglesey. We have each signed up to a manifesto (see page 4) which would guide any administration we formed. Being frustrated or angry about the present Council is not enough. This time you can do something. You can make an impact on the decisions that will affect your future and the future of your community. Use your vote to elect Labour Councillors. We are ready to serve you.
Voting For Your Labour Candidates
How to Vote Dear Resident You will know councils across Wales and Britain are having to make the toughest budgetary decisions of a generation. Anglesey is no exception. The UK Coalition Government is cutting funding to the Assembly and councils across the country at record levels. These cuts are too deep and too fast, indeed I voted against the Tory / LibDem proposals because of the impact they will have on our communities. At the same time there is an increasing demand for council services, such as care for older people and vulnerable children. The speed and scale of the cuts mean difficult decisions about spending priorities. A Labour run council will target funding where it makes the biggest difference to you. Labour is committed to providing you with good quality, good value services and to protect vulnerable members of our communities and to promote the economic growth that will bring jobs to Anglesey.

The UK economy is stagnating with no growth. The Council needs to do all it can to help the local economy to thrive in the long term. A solid and growing economy on Anglesey is essential for our aspirations. For this reason we will create a special ‘Economic Unit’, cross departmental working with business and other sectors to focus on jobs and growth. Good services, protecting vulnerable people and children, creating growth and jobs - these will be the priorities for a Labour run council. A far cry from the years where ‘Independent’ groups along with Plaid Cymru (the largest group) led Anglesey Council to a crisis and takeover by the Assembly through the Commissioners. We will restore pride and put people first. Your local community, your Island, a fresh start by voting for your Labour candidate on 2 May 2013.

A new system: How the voting will work On 2 May you will have the opportunity to vote in the County, Town and Community Council elections. Your vote is vitally important and could help transform the political landscape of the Island. The voting arrangements for the County Council are quite different to previous years. The Welsh Assembly Government with the support of the County Council has reorganised boundaries and reduced the number of councillors and wards. There will be 11 new multi-member wards replacing the previous 40 singlemember wards. There will be 30 new County Councillors instead of the current 40. The new wards will have either 2 or 3 councillors.
The Anglesey Labour Party will field a candidate in each ward, although some wards may have more than one Labour candidate. Under the new multi-member system you can vote for ALL Labour candidates up to the maximum permissible in your ward (2 or 3), should you wish to do so.
It is also important to know that voting for the Labour Team will ensure all the ward councillors are more likely to work together constructively as a team, providing you with efficient and effective representation. Vote Labour on 2 May and make Anglesey a better place to live and work.

LLAFUR YNYS MÔN LABOUR MANIFESTO MAY 2013 How we will conduct ourselves as Councillors: ● ● ● ● ●
We will work as a team in the best interests of all the community. We will oppose any kind of discrimination. We will promote professional, transparent and responsible management of Council affairs. We will always act with courtesy and respect in our dealings with the Public, Council Officers, Council Staff and fellow Councillors. We will work hard to restore trust and confidence in the Isle of Anglesey County Council putting policies before personality.
Aims and ambitions: ● ● ●
We aim to streamline the Councilʼs systems, looking for savings through effective management and processes. We are committed to getting the best value for taxpayersʼ money while improving the delivery of our services and investing sustainably and strategically to secure the future of Anglesey. We will concentrate on jobs and prosperity.
Economy, Environment and Planning: We will establish a dedicated economic strategy unit made up of councillors, officers across functions, and local businesses. The unit will promote Anglesey and facilitate inward investment and encourage social enterprise. Growing tourism will be a priority. Too many ineffective public consultations and self-serving decisions on planning have blighted the aesthetic and environmental well-being of the Island. Recent approval of giant onshore wind turbines is but one example. We will oppose the construction of any more giant turbines on shore. Anglesey is unique so we must ensure that we protect our Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, plan with tourism in mind and safeguard our greenbelt.
Vulnerable People: We will do our utmost to keep care homes open, providing a high standard of care, ideally under public control or through community partnerships. We are also concerned about home care for vulnerable people. Reports suggest that home care in England has proven to be more expensive than first thought, especially in rural areas. There is also evidence of isolation and early dementia because of a lack of regular contact - approximate visit time is 15 minutes per person.
Education: Anglesey Labour believes that every child should have the right to be educated to the highest standards so they are able to realise their potential. We will strive to deliver quality schools and provide the necessary resources to facilitate and equip modern classrooms led by talented, motivated teachers. We believe that money saved by closing unviable schools should be reinvested in the new schools and support transportation and staff relocation.
Housing and Social Inclusion: Anglesey has a number of areas of disadvantage (particularly rural areas) and deprivation that are amongst the worst in Wales. There are problems of long-term unemployment, high youth unemployment, high school truancy and homelessness. The coalition Government have exacerbated problems of homelessness and underinvested in social housing. The proposed bedroom tax will make the situation worse. We are committed to finding innovative solutions to Angleseyʼs housing needs and we will explore cooperative, mutual and other models of home ownership, where people are given stability and equity while retaining housing stocks. Despite the presence of food banks in our community, in some areas there are extremes of poverty with an estimated 2,500 children and their families going hungry. We will act compassionately to alleviate immediate suffering.
Transport: Bus services are critical for many people: particularly young people and job seekers. But Anglesey is poorly served by buses which are often infrequent, uncoordinated and unreliable. We will work closely with transport providers to try to achieve a more customer focused and reliable service that better meets passenger needs. Recent investment decisions for rail will see a High Speed 2 station at Crewe and an extension of the West Coast electrification but not to North Wales. We will lobby for electrification to Holyhead, the key Euro-route to and from Ireland. We will support the expansion of cycle paths especially safe routes to school.
Leisure and Sport: We are committed to maintaining and improving sporting and leisure facilities across Anglesey, including our school sports fields. Anglesey Labour will defend these assets against any future threat of development or closure. We will also promote Anglesey as host of the International Island Games - a shop window to the world which could boost our economy and provide a sporting legacy for future generations.
Communities, Language, Culture and Heritage: We will promote cultural heritage and rebuild safe diverse communities across the Island. The Welsh language is an integral part of our Island's identity. We should cherish and promote the Welsh language and our strategy will be to build confident bilingual communities. Anglesey Labour will endeavour to make Anglesey a vibrant, forward-looking place to live and visit, building on our proud agricultural, maritime and industrial past.
Broadband and Telecommunications: We will lobby to accelerate the installation of superfast broadband, supporting small and medium enterprise to access world markets with fast, reliable broadband, and address mobile phone coverage including 4G. We will champion the cause of rural areas as well as urban.
