Salvation Army serves youth at Northwoods Camp BY TANYA STARINETS NEWS@PINECITYMN.COM
On Elbow Lake, just five miles southwest of Finlayson, sits Salvation Army’s Northwoods Camp on 295 vast acres. The pool with a two-story water slide has closed for the season. Inside of spotless cabins are empty bunk beds. Paddle boats and pontoons sit silently on the pristine private shore. The still lake reflects trees all decked up in gold, rubies and amber. The kids have gone back to their city lives, while the lonely wooded camp patiently awaits next summer when children will resurrect it with laughter, a myriad of activities, wonder, and worship. Each year, Northwoods Camp accommodates hundreds of kids from Minnesota and North Dakota. Children engage in swimming, hiking in
the woods, camping, fishing, ropes course, boating, arts sports and more. The music camp brings accomplished musicians to teach children, as well as guests from local colleges. Football camp has been known to bring in former professional players. One of the youth group pastors works as a DJ on the weekends, and he puts together dance parties at the camp. A Christian family with nine children comes to entertain the camp-goers by riding unicycles while dribbling basketballs. Northwoods Camp also offers a family camp, where single mothers come with their children – often the only time that these low-income single mothers have an opportunity to relax and enjoy nature on a family vacation. Children at Northwoods Camp learn about nature, team work, good health habits in cleanliness, group living,
compassion for people from diverse backgrounds, problem-solving skills, and, of course, God. Families pay just $25 for camp, and most children come from inner-city, low-income homes. The rest of the expenses are covered through donations. The Salvation Army dates back to the 1860s when the Methodist minister William Booth and his wife Catherine took their faith out onto streets filled with poverty and despair, based on their belief that people’s physical and emotional needs must be met before ministering to them spiritually. To this day, the Salvation Army follows that mission by offering social services and community programs including meals, food shelves, housing, clothing, emergency TANYA STARIENTS | THE PIONEER prescription assistance, emergency gas Missy and James Cederstrom have been with Northwoods Camp since 2011 and live at the camp year-round.
