Rydberg heads to Rio for fourth Paralympics

A Pine City native is back on the world stage as he competes in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

John Rydberg, a 1996 graduate of Pine City High School, is heading to Brazil for his fourth Paralympics to take on the best wheelchair tennis players in the world.

He excelled in w wheelchair basketb ball as well, and p played both sports at tthe University of Texa as, Arlington, where h he helped his school w win a wheelchair basketball national

championship in 1997 before graduating in 2001.

Rydberg has gone on to become one of the top international wheelchair tennis players, at one time ranked as the top athlete in the sport in the United States and 11th in the world.

He won gold and silver medals in the Parapan American Games, and has been a member of the U.S. World Cup team eight times.

The Paralympics are always held just after the Olympics using the same ven-

ues as the Olympic Games, and Rydberg previously competed in the Paralympic Games in Athens, Beijing and London.

Rydberg, now 38, has said this will be his final round competing in the Paralympic Games.

“To compete on the world stage is amazing— having the U.S.A. on your back, representing your country, your state, your home. Nothing else like it,” Rydberg said.

Golden afternoons at Rock Creek Relics show A threshing demonstration under a blue, sunny sky was part of the fun at the Andersons’ annual sawing and threshing show held in Rock Creek Sept. 10 and 11.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation reports that the southbound Interstate 35 ramps on County Road 11 (Henriette Road), just north of Pine City, will be closed for the next two weeks as they are paved with concrete.

The southbound ramps at County Road 14 (Beroun Crossing Road) are also closed and will remain closed until Sept. 22.

The entire $27,034,314 reconstruction project on I-35 between Pine City and Hinckley is scheduled to continue into late October.

County plans $8.5m in new highway projects

Note: This month the Pine County Board will set the county’s preliminary 2017 budget and property tax levy. Property taxes pay for about one-third of the county’s annual $40 million budget. The

budget is comprised of four main components – highways, law enforcement, health and human services, and local government operations. Part 1 in this series outlines the county’s highway plans.

Pine County Engineer Mark LeBrun has proposed a list of 14 key highway construction and maintenance projects

for next year, representing $8.5 million of the county’s proposed $13.7 million road and bridge budget.

Six of the projects are slated for the Pine City area. The big-ticket item is reconstruction of Third Avenue SE (CSAH 8) in downtown Pine City from Second Street to 8th Avenue (CSAH 65) at an es-

timated cost of $1.1 million. This project also will tie in with a planned mill/overlay of 8th Avenue SE (CSAH 65) from Main Street east to Second Street SE. The county plans to replace a bridge along Brook Park Road (CSAH 13)

Sheriff seeks help with suspect ID The Pine County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in identifying suspects in a theft. On Sept.

7 around 4 a.m. a trailer was stolen from the Casey’s Store construction site in Pine City. The trailer was recovered later the same day, but tools from within had been taken. Anyone with information is asked to call 320-629-8380 or the sheriff’s tipline at 320-629-8342.

Our hearts are with Jacob Nineteen eighty nine was a long time ago.

The elder George Bush was in his first year as president of the United States. Mikhail Gorbachev was named president of what was then still the USSR. It was the year the Berlin Wall came down, the year of the Tiananmen Square massacre in China.

But in Minnesota, after the awful events of Oct. 22, it was the year of the Jacob Wetterling kidnapping.

It haunted all of us, because it could have happened to any famiEditor’s ly. A child playing with his brothSoapbox er and friend, stolen at gunpoint by a man in a mask.

And then, despite a massive Mike manhunt and search, nothing.

Gainor Nothing but rumors and dread.

The heartfelt pleas of his family on the television news night after night, the stricken looks on their faces.

I can’t imagine the dreams they must have had.

Night after night, year after year.

We knew people were still searching for Jacob, and hunting the person who took him. Every few years, it seemed, there would be something on the news – a crew of law enforcement filmed digging in a field. The Jacob Wetterling Act to create a state sex-offender registry was passed in his honor. A bridge was dedicated to him. Suspects were investigated by police and discussed in the media.

But that 27 years felt like just a flash of time on Sept. 3 when they announced that Jacob’s remains had been uncovered after suspect Daniel James Heinrich led them to the site.

My wife, who was just a couple of years older than Jacob in 1989, gasped when she found out. We were driving back from brunch with an old friend, and she saw on her phone what Jacob’s mother Patty had said: “Jacob has been found and our hearts are broken ... I have no words.”

And even now, weeks later, there are no words.

You hope the horror the Wetterling family has endured is made a little less cruel knowing that Jacob has received a proper resting place, and that the person responsible will face some sort of justice. You hope this will help them heal.

There have been too many nightmarish crimes and incidents since then. It was 27 years ago too that 22-month old Aaron Anderson went missing from his home in rural Pine City. Authorities believed that Aaron wandered into the Snake River, which was running high and dangerous that April day. But a search found nothing.

It was years ago, but it’s all still very real, very vivid. The world is a different place. I don’t always think it’s a better place than it was back then. But I do feel sure that it’s a little bit better for the Wetterlings, who have endured this heartbreak and loss for so long.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Rarick will vote pro-life To the Editor: Having elected representation that understands the importance of human life is an important issue for not only me, but many others here in Pine and Kanabec counties. For the better part of the past 15-20 years, no matter our State Representative or their party, they tended to lean pro-life, recognizing this is a value a majority of citizens hold in our area. This election however, only one candidate understands this belief.

Jason Rarick was endorsed by the Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL) State PAC last week Monday. Minnesota’s oldest pro-life organization, with over 70,000 member families, gave Representative Rarick a 100 percent score standing up for pro-life issues on both their 2015 and 2016 legislative scorecard. His opponent however has openly vowed to “always stand for a woman’s right to choose” and has made it one of the top priorities of their campaign. If Rarick’s opponent chooses to ignore where his district stands on something as sacred as human life, what other priorities of this district will also be ignored?

If protecting life is important to you, the choice is clear. Vote Jason Rarick for State Representative.

Deputy Morrow and law enforcement in Minnesota To the Editor: I read our editor’s (Mr. Gainor’s) soap box and want to give him a big thank you. As a retired deputy of 28 years his words hit home.

What I don’t understand is why did it take this community so long to honor Deputy Morrow? Did it take some pushing by our current sheriff? I have a feeling it might have.

People today have a misconception of what an officer is. He is not one of Hitler’s storm troops. He is no different than the man building a house or a man

Autumn is upon us

To the Editor: Outside we observe that the trees have that red or yellowish color, the evenings are much cooler and all the fairs are over.

Most of the gardens are done with their produce and the farmers are ready to harvest their fields.

The apple trees are very ready to give us their yield.

The drooping branches, with limbs hanging to the ground, are covered red with fruit demanding to be picked. The fun in our area is to visit one of the apple orchards with their special events. Apple pie, cider and muffins are now fresh for our liking.

But don’t forget those pumpkins.

driving a truck or any other job. His job is to serve and protect the people in his area, and they do it quite well.

What I don’t see here is something I used to do when I worked. I would park the squad, get out and stop at different businesses and talk to the people there. I would also stop and walk neighborhoods and talk to the people. Maybe they don’t here because of the large county and small numbers of deputies patrolling them.

One point you made that is a little wrong is the sentence for first-degree murder. Yes it’s life in prison.... or is it?

Life in our liberal state is 20 years. Now figure in good time in prison and they can be out in 17 years.

Life is not life but it should be. You should walk in and be carried out.

If you feel the same way maybe you should contact your friends at our state capitol and tell them you want a change. The choice is yours.

Fishing just fine in Rock Creek in 1966 10 Years Ago, 2006 The Pine County Commissioners were surprised to learn last week that staffing the new jail will require 17 additional full-time equivalent positions. The staffing increase will add $787,099 to the jail operating costs.

Threshing, sawing, and a wedding made the Andersons’ Rock Creek Threshing Show a true memory maker this year. Making for grand memories, a Braham couple, Doris Marsh and Jason Fiedler, were married at the show. They were the second couple to be married there since the show began 17 years ago. When asked why they chose the show as the site for their Years wedding, the bride said, “Jason loves tractors and refurbishes old ones. He Ago asked if I minded getting married at the show and I said, “Of course not!”

In colonial days, women would make quilts, layer them on a bed and invite neighbors in to view the top quilt, turn it down, view the next, and so on. Lorraine Cummings was showing a quilt made in the evening by her aunt with only the light from the fireplace. Carolyn Tuckner displayed a quilt made by a beloved neighbor as she tended cows in the ‘30’s before the fence was in on their farm. Women are invited to bring a quilt and share its story. Lunch would be served.

Bev Furber was named golfer of the year at the final session and luncheon of the ladies morning golf league.

Girl Tennis Athletes of the Week are Glenna Carlson and Maria Bellinger. Both are senior captains and have provided the Dragon tennis team with outstanding leadership, both on and off the court.

25 Years Ago, 1991 Homecoming candidates are eager for the coronation ceremony when the 1991 king and queen will be chosen. Vying for the crowns are Jory Johnson, Chad Fedder, Jenna Jambeck, Alan Bergstrom, Tiffany Smith and Joe Mikyska. The Dragon football team meets Milaca Friday night in the homecoming contest.

A Pangerl family reunion was held at Fish Lake in Harris with more than 240 attending. The six living direct descendants of the original Pine City area Pangerl families, Florence Johnston, Tillie Skoog, Martha Fallows, Mary Heyda, Frances Sward and Leona Jacobson were pictured.

Roy Teich and John Lindquist came through the playoffs in the men’s senior league golf tournament to win the league championship. Ed Sevick and Bill Anderson came in second.

Jerry Olson, Pine City, could scarcely believe his eyes when he aced the number three hole at the Pine City Country Club. It was his second hole-in-one at the course; the first happened several years ago on the seventh hole.

Louie Wanous celebrated his 80th birthday recently with an airplane ride, a gift from his grandson. An open house party was given in his honor by his sons and daughters. His 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren attended along with many friends and relatives.

50 Years Ago, 1966 Homecoming preparations are underway at Pine City High School. Candidates for homecoming queen are Debbie Bjorklund, Betty Kalb and Dianne Mortenson. Their escorts will be Tim Erhart, Bob Jones and Dave Thiry.

John Blatnik, Minnesota congressman from the 8th district, announced the award of a $43,300 contract to Plastech Research, Inc., Rush City, to produce 8,000,000 plastic knives for the Defense department.

Fishing may be good in other parts of Minnesota, but some of the local boys have been making out pretty good in Rock Creek. Some good sized northerns have been caught from the creek this summer, but on Satur-

day the prize one was caught. Dale Halgrimson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Halgrimson, caught a ten-pound, two ounce northern while fishing off the bridge.

75 Years Ago, 1941

Beroun will observe its annual Harvest Festival next weekend and nothing has been left undone to make it an outstanding event.

On Sept. 16, eleven Pine County registrants reported to the Selective Service Board in Pine City where they were in training at Fort Snelling.

100 Years Ago, 1916

At the annual Pine County Health Association meeting, Miss Nicoll, county nurse, spoke on the need of a tubercular sanitarium in the county.

At a meeting of the Pine County Farmers Exchange, the members decided to build a warehouse. It will be located on railroad property, west of the track and south of the stock yards.

John Carlson, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Carlson, celebrated his fifth birthday with his little friends. After the guests had departed and Master John was resting his tired little legs, after an interval of deep study with knitted brows, he told his mother that it would be much nicer if little boys could have been born more than just once, so they could have lots of birthday parties during the year.

BOARD MEMBER APPLICATIONS WANTED Each year the Chamber of Commerce has up to 7 director terms that expire on December 31. The 13 member Board of Directors is comprised of members selected through a balloting process with voting available to all 210 Chamber Members. At this time we are seeking representatives from local businesses that would like to serve a 2 year term and be added to the ballot for voting by the membership. We are seeking candidates for the Board of Directors that have a vested interest in fulfilling the mission and purpose of the Pine City Area Chamber of Commerce.

As a Director, your responsibilities include: ~ A commitment to a two year term (1/1/17 - 12/31/18) ~ Attendance at monthly Chamber Meetings (1st Tuesday at Noon) ~ Serve in a leadership role, as Chair or Co-Chair, for one of the events hosted by the Chamber each year of your term. ~ Serve on at least one other event committee. ~ Attend other Chamber hosted events, including the Annual Banquet in October. ~ Take part in mentoring and networking opportunities with other businesses.

We’ll play good fundamental volleyball and win games with heart, leaving it all on the court.”

Improving to 9-3 this past week, the Dragons volleyball team continues to take strides. The squad was busy during the week with conference matches on Tuesday and Thursday before hosting a tournament on Saturday where they would bring home some hardware, taking third. Overall, Pine City earned four more wins and suffered two additional losses.

Pine City 2, Moose Lake Willow River 0 (25-20, 25-19) Back into the win column after this one, the Dragons had to battle against a tough Rebels squad.

“After a little pep talk and some time to wake up and regroup,” said Danielson, “the team, as I’ve come to know it, was back. We passed well and played great defense which will win games. I felt this was our best match of the day.”

Although that may have been the Dragons’ best volleyball, the wins kept coming.

Pine City 3, Hinckley-Finlayson 0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-10) On Tuesday, Sept. 6, the Dragons cruised to their first conference win of the season. The Jaguars were outmatched from the beginning, and Pine City never let up. Cruising to an easy win in front of their home crowd, head coach Devin Danielson seemed pleased with the effort but more focused on Thursday’s opponent, the Aitkin Gobblers. Unfortunately, Aitktin would get the best of the Dragons in that one.

Pine City 2, Eveleth-Gilbert 0 (25-18, 25-20) Historically the Dragons have struggled against this opponent, but played hard here as they knew that a spot in the third place match was on the line. Pine City closed out both sets and advanced.

Aitkin 3, Pine City 1 (25-14, 21-25, 25-17, 25-10) After dropping game one, the Dragons rallied and managed to take a game from Aitkin. Junior middle Alexis Pankonin did a great job of shutting down the Gobblers big outside hitter while leading her squad in blocks with seven on the night. Aitkin had to fight hard to win the third set, but took control of the match from there.

“We ended up losing to a very strong team in four,” said Danielson. “Losses are hard, especially when a conference title might be on the line. The scores really don’t reflect how well the girls played. Even playing a little off all night, the volleys were incredible. Some of the best volleyball I’ve seen played in our gym yet in front of a packed house. We had prepared all week for this match. We knew this would be one of our toughest conference matchups of the season.”

Pine City honored the Jacob Wetterling family by wearing the #11 on their right wrists after the terrible developments in that historic case had played out days before.

“We pledged,” said Danielson, “to be fair, be kind, be understanding, be honest, be thankful, be a good sport, be a good friend, be joyful, be generous, be gentle with others, and be positive, as requested by the Wetterling Foundation.”

After the game, the Dragons shifted focus to their tournament on Saturday, where they would look to get back on the winning path.

“Saturday was our home tourney,” said Danielson.

the first time in years. Going in we felt that it would either be us or C-I taking home the trophy.”

The Dragons would face that Crosby-Ironton team in the opener, and unfortunately, lose in straight sets.

The Dragons capped off a successful day with a win, earning third place against the Eagles, who were the defending champion at this tournament. Pine City had a long wait between pool play and this match, so they had to stay loose and be prepared.

“We knew they wouldn’t just lay down and hand us those medals,” said Danielson. “A lot of time had passed so there’s always a concern that your team will come out flat and a bit tired. We started slow against them, and to their credit they put up quite a fight with a very young team. Ultimately we were able to hold them off and take home some hardware in our home tourney for the first time in years.”

On the day, junior Maisie Berg had 44 assists as the third-year starter keyed the offense. Emily Broz led the team in kills with 15, followed by Breckan Pangerl with 14, and Isabelle Aragonez with 11. Sophomore Isabelle Aragonez led in blocks with nine, followed by Pankonin with eight, and senior Sam Carr with five.

Eighth grader Kelsey Kidder had 11 digs on the day as the squad was without starting libero Elsie Lundquist.

Pine City has upcoming matches against Braham and Rush City.

Dragons tennis takes first at Eberhart Invitational

Dragons tennis season continued this past week with another win and a first place finish at a weekend tournament. Pine City is playing at a very high level right now and the wins continue to pile up. The Dragons are now 10-0 overall.

Pine City 7, Mora 0 On Thursday, Sept. 8, Pine City traveled to Mora to play the Mustangs and came away with a convincing win, their first in the Granite Ridge.

“The ladies got off the bus and they were ready to play,” said head coach Rick Engelstad. “All these girls are hitting the ball very crisply.”

Pine City never even dropped a set. Natalie Cahill (6-1, 6-0), Lydia Adams (6-0, 6-1), Anna Miller (63, 6-3), and Katie Miller (6-1, 6-1) all cruised through their singles matches. Doubles pairings of Raven Rarick and Alison Brown (6-0, 6-1), Caitlyn Furber and Melinda Rydberg (6-0, 6-0), Emily Carpenter and Elizabeth Cahill (6-1, 6-2) and Rachel Johnson and Lindsay Miller (6-2, 6-1) were equally successful.

With this win, we will be moved up to #8. These young ladies are playing very focused and smart tennis.

Our goal is to improve on something each and every time we are on the court. They have been doing just that.”

In individual results, at first singles Natalie Cahill went 3-0 to take championship honors. In the finals she defeated Cora Delich of

Eveleth-Gilbert who is currently ranked #8 in Class A. Pine City also went undefeated and won championships at first and third doubles with Raven Rarick and Alison Brown, and Emily Carpenter and Elizabeth Cahill.

At second doubles, Caitlyn Furber and Melinda Rydberg went 2-1 and took second place. Third place finishes were earned by Lydia Adams, Katie Miller, and the doubles pairing of Rachel Johnson and Lindsay Miller. Katie Miller went 2-1 and took consolation honors.

This week the Dragons were scheduled to host Pierz on Tuesday, Crosby-Ironton on Thursday and travel to Hibbing to participate in the Hibbing Invitational on Saturday.

Boys and girls cross-country teams place at Pine Invite

Dragons cross-country teams ran at the Pine City Invitational on Thursday, Sept. 8. A total of 12 teams competed at the meet and although Pine City didn’t finish quite as high as they had hoped, they saw some positive performances. The Dragons girls took fourth out of eight teams competing with 107 points, while the Dragons boys also finished fourth with 96.

Mora’s girls took first and Milaca’s boys won the invite.

“Both the girls and boys teams struggled to put up great team scores as we have some top runners battling injury,” said head coach Jared Clementson. “We also had one that didn’t finish due to a side-ache and one that was not able to compete due to family reasons.

Overall, I thought we did well considering the circumstances. We would have liked to have done better as a team but it is early in the season and our main priority is making sure we are ready when it counts, at the end of the season.”

“This is Lily Wilson’s first year of cross-country and she has shown that she is a tough competitor as she has placed in our top-five in the first two meets. Alexis Thieman has shown great improvement from last year.

Langmade had a better showing than at our first meet in Brainerd but is still battling an ankle injury suffered this summer playing basketball.”

On the boys side, senior Eli Grubbs ran a smart race to take the win.

Grubbs passed the leader with 300m to go and went on to finish first by 12 seconds in a time of 18:15.

Freshman Nate Webster (19:05) had a great race, finishing fourth. Tommy Ryan had been running up next to Webster when he had to pull out of the race due to a severe sideache. Noah Miller (20:16), Remington Steele (21:11), and TJ Rank (21:28) rounded out the Dragons scorers, placing 23rd, 40th and 42nd respectively. Austin Eckert (22:09) was the Dragons’ final varsity runner.

“I was very impressed with how Grubbs and Webster ran their races,” said Clementson.

“Grubbs is looking to have a comeback season after suffering with mono

last season. It is a really nice surprise to see Webster improving the way he has. He has already taken off one minute and 45 seconds from his best time last year.”

In JV action, Jill Tomczyk (26:35) and Kaylee Prihoda were Pine City’s top JV finishers, placing seventh and eighth respectively. The Dragons JV boys did well and some boys even had faster times than some of Pine City’s varsity runners. Freshman Derek Clementson (20:42) raced to a second place finish in his second ever 5k race.

Clementson’s great performance will earn him his first varsity race on Tuesday in Mora as he ran a time that made him the squad’s fourth fastest runner. Nick Stolp (22:02), Jake Adams (22:34) and Koleman Lind (22:48) all raced well, finishing in ninth, 14th and 18th.

Up next, the Dragons were scheduled to be in Mora on Tuesday, Sept.

13 at the Stone Brook Golf Course before heading to Pierz the following week for the Pierz Stampede on Monday, Sept. 19.

“In some ways you look at it and their athletes are just better than ours,” admitted Polzine. “When the other guy across from you is just bigger and faster, that’s a key.”

A major positive for the Dragons was their defensive effort. After allowing the first three touchdowns, Pine City held the Hawks out of the endzone for more than two quarters of play.

“After a couple quick scores you can tell what type of a team you have,” Polzine said. “They got a few big plays, but we kept working and made them work. We were hitting and getting after it. It was a 20-0 ballgame for a long time. We stressed that it was a positive keeping them pads popping all night long. Hermantown has a system and they do what they do very well. They tried to expand on it and it was out of their comfort zone too. I think that was also a factor.”

Polzine specifically called out senior defensive lineman Daniel Showalter for his efforts, and his leadership in that position group. Offensively there were few highlights outside of several nice pass connections between quarterback Jacob Lindblom and Aaron Pulkrabek. Lindbloom has shown improved touch and accuracy on his passes in 2016, and the passing game was more effective on this night than the running game. After losing to the Hawks 55-0 last year, it was hard to envision the Dragons being able to win this game. Hermantown is a very high quality opponent with size, strength, athleticism and speed.

The Hawks scored quickly on their opening drive, punched in another first quarter touchdown, and then followed up with a third score early in the second quarter to open up a 20-0 lead after 14:26 of play.

Pine City did stiffen on defense from there, holding the Hawks scoreless for the next two-plus quarters of play, but allowed one final score to end the game.

“I thought overall we played a pretty clean game against a team like Hermantown,” said head coach Jared Polzine. “Their size and skill, they’re tough.

We had no turnovers and minimized penalties; one block in the back but otherwise no foolish penalties.

The one thing that bugs you as a defensive coordinator is giving up the long plays, not to say they wouldn’t have scored in other ways, but those plays really hurt.”

We keep five or six in and they rush five, it’s hard sometimes to protect for four or five seconds. The running game had some struggles but that’s a great defensive team with a lot of speed. We could get to the perimeter against Rush City, which also caused the middle to open up, but against

Hermantown that wasn’t going to happen.”

As the squad prepares for its week three matchup with a 1-1 Mora team, Polzine is stressing the mental aspects of the game to his players.

“We talked about being more tough mentally,” said coach Polzine. “We talked about it at halftime, and just being ready to go all of the time. When things are out of our control, we just have to focus and concentrate.”

a quarter of a mile north of the Henriette Road (CSAH 11) along with reclamation of CSAH 13 from CSAH 11 northward to Beroun Crossing Road (CSAH 14). Those projects are estimated to cost about $750,000.

Reclamation of a 4.5 mile segment of CSAH 14 from CSAH 13 in Pokegama Township eastward and northward along the west side of I-35 to CSAH 54 in Mission Creek Township is estimated to cost $1,025,000.

In the southern part of the county, a mill/overlay of County Road 106 from Trunk Highway 70 to CSAH 2 in Rock Creek is estimated to cost about $200,000.

LeBrun is requesting a property tax levy of $1,879,821 for public works next year, up $100,000 from this year’s levy; plus a $472,405 levy for building maintenance, up $8,850 from

this year. The levy does not include state aid or revenue from the new half-cent local option sales tax that will go into effect January 1. The new tax, along with accumulated funds from the county’s wheelage tax— which expires at the end of this year—is expected to generate over $1 million in 2017.

The preliminary county highway budget for next year also includes $635,000 for fleet vehicle and equipment purchases, including two major highway equipment items, five marked patrol cars for the sheriff’s office, and three county fleet vehicles. The county has budgeted $100,000 for dust control on gravel roads, as well.

Highway department staffing will remain the same next year, including 30 full-time employees in public works plus four full-time employees in building maintenance. LeBrun said lower fuel costs for coun-

ty vehicles and reduced utility costs at county buildings help to cushion the impact of rising costs in other areas. The lower fuel costs are translating into better prices for highway construction projects, he pointed out.

Earlier this year, in an effort to save money, one additional building maintenance worker was hired to take the place of a custodial service the county had been using.

Proposed capital improvement projects include replacing the roof on the public health building at Sandstone and upgrading the elevator at the Pine Government Center in downtown Pine City.

Rydberg lives in Oakdale, and coaches both boys and girls tennis at East Ridge High School in Woodbury, Minnesota.

Wallace W. Stahlke Wa l lace Warren Stahlke of Mora passed away on Monday, Sept. 5, 2016, at his winter home in Mission, Texas. He was 86 years old.

Wallace was born July 6, 1930, to Ernst (Mike) and Arta (Laasch) Stahlke. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Waconia High School in 1948. After high school he attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis.

On July 2, 1952, Wallace was united in marriage to Phyllis Hoese at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waconia.

That same year, Wallace was drafted into the United States Army. After returning to Waconia in 1954, the couple started a family. John Wallace Stahlke was born in 1958 followed by their second son, William Warren Stahlke in 1962.

Wallace and Phyllis owned and operated Stahlke Dairy Distribution for 18 years. They later sold that business to Jack Frost. After selling Stahlke Dairy Distribution, they purchased what is now Stahlke’s Department Store in 1972. Wallace worked at Stahlke’s Department store until his retirement.

Wallace was an avid fisherman and he enjoyed his weekly bridge game with his buddies. He and Phyllis traveled to many countries and states during their marriage.

Wallace was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Phyllis, and his older sister Dellas.

He is survived by his sons, John (Tracie) of Pine City, and William (Sue) of Mora; grandchildren, Jenelle (Nancy) Nurthen, Mike (Kim) Stahlke, Seth (Savannah) Stahlke, and Alex Stahlke; great-grandchildren Charles and Miriam; sister Diane (Dean) Luke; two nieces and many other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held on Wednesday, Sept.

14, 2016, at Zion Lutheran Church in Mora. Inurnment was in Oakwood Cemetery in Mora. Military Honors provided by Mora American Legion Post 201. Arrangements by Akkerman-Ingebrand Funeral Home.

Russell H. Rike Russell Rike of Rock Creek passed away surrounded by his family and friends on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2016, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis at the age of 73.

Russell Howard Rike was born on Oct. 21, 1942, in Rush City to Forrest and Ruth (Wickstrom) Rike. He grew up on the family farm north of Rush City with his siblings Sharon, Kurt and Pam. In 1967, Russell and his wife JoAnne (Hill) welcomed their only child Glen. As Glen grew older, Russell and Glen enjoyed camping and hunting trips, camping at the State Fair and many years of tractor pulling.

Russell began his welding career in Rush City and bought his first shop in 1972.

In 1992, Russell married Betty (Loescher) in a small ceremony in Alaska adding Todd, Scott and Theresa to the family. This led to more Alaska visits where Russ enjoyed Halibut fishing where he was able to join the 150# club on a trip there in 2005.

After Glen married Brenda in 1995, Russell’s beloved grandchildren began to join the family. Sherry, Ruth, Katherine, Josh, Daniel and later Sherry’s husband Kyle, became grandpa’s crew.

In 1997 they moved the shop to Rock Creek and Betty remained by his side faithfully ever since. He continued to work hard welding and tinkering until his

death.

Grandpa’s crew made many memories that will remain in their hearts for eternity.

Russell is survived by his wife Betty Rike of Rock Creek; son Glen (Brenda) Rike of Pine City; grandchildren Sherry (Kyle) Graber of Brook Park, Ruth Rike, Katherine Rike, Joshua Rike and Daniel Rike, all of Pine City; step-sons Todd (Julie) Orr of Staples and Scott Orr of Wyoming; step-daughter Theresa Blazka of California; brother Kurt (Sharon) Rike of Pine City; sister Pam (Gary) Pierson of Oakdale; brother-in-law Don Cummings of Braham; nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

He is preceded in death by his parents Forrest and Ruth Rike and his sister Sharon Cummings.

Pastor Tim Adams officiated at Russell’s funeral service on Friday, Sept. 9, 2016, at Journey North Church in Pine City. A gathering of family and friends was held Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016, from 5-8 p.m. at the Olson Funeral Chapel in Rush City and one hour prior to the service at the church. Honorary casket bearers included Les Wiener, Gary “Skip” Althoff, Bruce Podwil and Charlie Mohr.

Cynthia Lou Bost trom-Dahlin, age 60, of P Pine City, passed away o Sept. 9, 2016, with on h family by her side. her Cynthia was born o April 7, 1956, to on K Kenneth and Harriet ( (Bellin) Bostrom in P Princeton.

Cynthia graduated from Cambridge High School and continued her education at the Trowbridge Beauty College.

She graduated in the spring of 1976. After completing college Cynthia made her home in Pine City, where she loved working as a hairdresser and owning her own hair salon. Cynthia was a member of the Pine City Chamber of Commerce while living in the Pine City area. On Feb. 18, 1995, Cynthia and Kurt Dahlin were married at the Rush Point Lutheran Church.

Cynthia was a much loved aunt and great aunt. She enjoyed spending as much time as she could outside going for pontoon rides and having lakeside picnics.

There was never a time that Cynthia missed a birthday or special occasion for anyone close to her.

Cynthia was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Edward and Ruth Bostrom; maternal grandparents, Clarence and Hildur Bellin; uncles, John Larson, John Bostrom, Richard Bellin, Kenneth Bellin; cousins, Kevin Theline and Timothy Larson.

Cynthia is survived by her husband of 21 years, Kurt Dahlin; her parents, Kenneth and Harriet Bostrom; her sisters, Connie (Greg) Odendahl of Brook Park, Carol (Jeffrey) Nelson of Sandstone; her brother, Craig (Carol Jean) Bostrom of Cloverdale; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

A memorial service is planned for Cynthia at 3 p.m. at the Memorial Drive Bible Fellowship in Askov on Sept. 18, 2016, with Pastor Gary Nelson officiating. A visitation will take place one hour prior to the service.

He attende 1st through 6th ed grade at Whitter Country School and Ogilvie High School. He then went on to St. Paul Vocational School.

Don was a proud Local Union 1 Brick Layer since 1966; he retired at the age of 55.

Don lived in Rock Creek since 1976 where he built his home. He loved to go to thrashing shows, flea markets, garage sales and auctions. He was proud of all the trinkets he had in his “man cave” including every single meat grinder, his tractors and his 1947 Ford pickup truck. Don loved to tell stories of his upbringing and his past events. He was well known for his one-liners, his sense of humor and he loved to give his advice: “Don’t take any wooden nickels and keep working so I can continue to collect my Social Security.” He was known to always say “it’s different.” Don tried to live life to the fullest and enjoyed going out to eat at his favorite restaurants and teasing the waitresses, visiting with his friends and getting the daily newspaper, lottery tickets and playing games on his i-Pad. He also enjoyed feeding the birds, driving his golf cart to visit his neighbors and exploring his land.

Don is survived by his children: Melisa (Kent) Lestrud of Princeton, Sheldon (Kim) Gallmeier of Pine City and Lynette (Jeff) Kuzel of Rock Creek; grandchildren: Nikki (Quent) Patzoldt, Jake (Cindy) Sprandel, Mariah (Eric) Skalicky, Savannah, Griffin and Cameron Gallmeier, Emmy Rae Kuzel, Hunter, Kaleigh and Connor Lestrud; great-grandchildren: Paisleigh and Bryer Patzoldt; brothers: Jack (Janice) Gallmeier and Gary (Colleen) Gallmeier; sister: Barb (Jac) Engebretsen; step-children: David Alguire (Ker-

NEWSLINE Fairview Clinics – Pine City pursues sustainable future At Fairview Clinics – Pine City, providers and staff are making strides toward reducing environmental impact.

In February 2015, the clinic’s staff signed a pledge to work on sustainable improvements in energy, waste, purchasing and food systems. Since then, the staff has been recycling batteries, getting rid of all disposable silverware and dishes, re-using non-confidential paper, participating in a “Meatless Monday” program, replacing furniture with items from within the Fairview system rather than purchasing new pieces, and instituting a recycling program.

The Pine City clinic staff has purchased composting bins to collect food scraps within their break areas and reduce food waste. To cut down on water usage, the clinic has also purchased a rain barrel—a small, aboveground storage tank that collects rainwater from gutters and stores it for use in the clinic’s garden.

“These changes are part of the responsibility that we have to our community and the environment,” said Kris Clementson, RN, clinic administrator at Fairview Clinics – Pine City. “There are some very simple things we can do that can have a very large impact.”

Schlaeger wins at State Fair The Minnesota State Fair’s agricultural and creative competitions drew more than 30,000 entries this year, with competitors vying for a share of ribbons, trophies and more than $1.4 million in prize money. Competitions included events for livestock, horses, school projects, dog trials, baked and canned goods, fruit, vegetables, crafts, bee and honey products, fine arts, farm crops, flowers, butter, cheese and more.

In open class livestock competitions, supreme champion titles were awarded to the best grand champions out of all beef and dairy breeds, and breeding sheep and swine, including Supreme Champion Light Horse Gelding: Michelle Schlaeger of Pine City.

Master Gardener applications accepted until Oct. 1 Those with an interest in plants and gardening may apply to become a University of Minnesota Extension County Master Gardener before Oct. 1.

The 48 hour Master Gardener Horticulture Core Course can be taken online between Jan. 13 and May 7, 2017, or

in-person on Fridays and Saturdays at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, Chaska, between Jan. 13 and Feb. 4. The course covers 12 horticulture topics taught by University of Minnesota Extension educators.

Following the course, interns will complete 50 hours of volunteer time working on projects that educate the public about gardening and horticulture. After the first year, interns become a certified University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener. To remain certified, Master Gardeners must contribute at least 25 hours of volunteer service annually.

Get around safely this school year There is an increase in pedestrian and bicycle traffic around schools starting this week as students across the state head back to school. Pedestrians should use crosswalks and sidewalks when available, and look left, right and left again before crossing the street. When no sidewalks are available, they should walk on the left side of the road toward traffic. About a third of all pedestrian crashes occur during the weekday morning and afternoon rush hour driving times.

Bicyclists should ride predictably so motorists know what their intentions are. This means using hand signals, riding in a straight line and obeying traffic signals. Bicyclists are subject to the same laws as motor vehicles. They should wear helmets and wear reflective gear to increase their visibility.

About a third of all bicycle crashes occur during the afternoon rush hours of 3 to 6 p.m. Bicyclists’ failure to yield right of way and disregard for traffic control devices were the top two contributing factors to crashes in 2015 when bicyclists were at fault.

Motorists should look for children at intersections, crosswalks and along roads. It’s the law to stop for pedestrians within the crosswalk. It’s also the law to give a three-foot clearance, and to yield to bicyclists before making a turn. Avoid distractions, such as eating or drinking and using cell phones while operating vehicles.
