Woman dies in Hwy 70 crash STAFF REPORT NEWS@PINECITYMN.COM
A Rush City woman was killed and two men were injured in a crash on Highway 70 this past Friday – and one of the drivers has been arrested for suspected drunk driving and criminal vehicular homicide. The Minnesota State Patrol reports that at 1:34 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 16, a GMC pickup was heading east on Highway 70. The pickup was driven by Garret L. Stevens, 25, of Rush City with Mary D. Gonzalez, 47, of Rush City as a passenger. As the pickup entered the intersection with County Road 23 it broadsided a Buick LeSabre driven by Austin M. Wolters, 23, of Janesville, Wisconsin, as that vehicle crossed Highway 70. Gonzalez was killed in the crash. Both Stevens and Wolters received injuries that were described as nonlife threatening by the Minnesota State Patrol. Pine County and Chisago County deputies, the Minnesota State Patrol and other first responders arrived at the scene. Law enforcement reported that they detected alcohol in Stevens’ system. No alcohol was detected in Wolters’ system. Wolters was taken to Hayward Memorial Hospital, while Stevens was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. Stevens was arrested on Sept. 17 on suspicion of criminal vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated and booked into Pine County Jail. Criminal charges had not been filed against him by the Pine County Attorney’s Office at press time.

Fur Post visitors voyage into the past BY TANYA STARINETS NEWS@PINECITYMN.COM
Six hundred visitors and 300 historical recreationists traveled back in time on Sept. 17 and 18 during the Festival of the Voyageur, an annual event that brings together families as well as history buffs who love the fur trading era. Re-enactors portray Ojibwe, voyageurs and fur traders preparing for winter trade along the Snake River in 1804. The festival takes place at the North West Company Fur Post, a reconstructed fur trading post on the Snake River west of Pine City. The original post was established by John Sayer, who was a partner in the North West Company, which was built by his crew of voyageurs. Festival visitors participated in the country dance with live fiddle music and dance lessons. They also visited La Compagnie as they set up camp at the river with replica fur-trade canoes, and watched demonstrations of fire starting, finger weaving and

campfire cooking. Other demonstrations included American Indian beadwork, quillwork and basketry. Hands-on activities for the kids included candle-making, scavenger hunt and other skill-building games. Visitors explored a collection of genuine trade goods, real furs and reproduction trade muskets. Costumed guides helped interpret the site for visitors. One such guide was Mercedes Tuma-Hansen. She entertained visitors with stories of Sayer, his crew of voyageurs and Ojibwe. The initial driving force behind European exploration and settlement was the demand for a hat. The “beaver,” as the hat was called, was sought after by fashionable Europeans, and was a symbol of status and power. “Men liked to show off,” Tuma-Hansen said. “They sure haven’t changed much since then.” The hat ranged in style from tri-corners fashion
A truck unloading concrete in the Interstate 35 construction zone outside Pine City struck the County Road 11 (Henriette Road) bridge over the freeway on Tuesday, Sept. 13, and both the driver and passenger had to be airlifted to North Memorial Hospital for their injuries. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, on Sept. 13 a Freightliner Truck driven by Kelly R. Norgren, 48, of Battle Lake was unloading concrete in the I-35 construction zone. The truck drove away from the scene heading south, but the dump box on the truck remained elevated as it did so. When passing under the County Road 11
