Kathleen Doenz, 68, of Pokegama Township, will serve a year and a day in state prison for animal cruelty after repeatedly violating the terms of her probation that forbid her from acquiring animals.

The charges stem from a Sept.

12, 2013 search warrant that resulted in the seizure of over 100 animals: horses, dogs, ducks and chickens in the care of Doenz and

her mother Gloria Carlson, 87.

Many of the animals were found malnourished to the point of starvation and had been made to live in filthy conditions.

On April 13, 2015, Doenz pled guilty to one felony count of animal abuse, with 13 other similar felony and misdemeanor counts dismissed as part of a plea deal.

She was sentenced on June 23 to 90 days of jail. Carlson was sentenced to five years probation.

A part of the bargain Doenz made with prosecutors was that

if she obeyed the terms of her probation for five years – including no animal purchases – the felony charge would be taken off her record.

However, just 10 days after being released from jail on Sept. 2, Doenz violated her probation by purchasing 29 mini horses.

Rail crossings to be rebuilt this summer For county, two Pine City crossings have $455,504 estimated price tag

The Pine County Board of Commissioners has approved contracts to reconstruct two railroad crossings in Pine City this summer in connection with county highway improvements.

In his review of $5.5 million of county highway projects slated for construction this summer, County Engineer Mark LeBrun noted that the railroad crossing at the entrance to the Pine City Technology Park will be upgraded along with the crossing east of Chubby’s.

LeBrun said 3,000 cars per day use the Airport Road crossing, and that level of traffic has doubled in the past few years. The county will be installing turn lanes at the intersection with Highway 61 at that location, and the crossing will be significantly wider to facilitate semi-truck traffic.

The 8th Avenue crossing east of Chubbys is 50 years old, LeBrun noted, with traffic volumes in the neighborhood of 6,000 cars per day.

Both projects will benefit traffic from Cross Lake, which has heightened activity, particularly on weekends during the summer.

The county’s share of the cost of rehabilitating both railroad crossings is $455,504. Work is scheduled for the June-July timeframe.

Pine County Medical Examiner reports on county deaths STAFF REPORT EDITOR@PINECITYMN.COM

Pine County’s medical examiner reports that there were 185 deaths investigated in Pine County in 2015, with 28 autopsies performed – twice as many as in 2014.

Pine County Medical Examiner A. Quinn Strobl, MD, offered his annual report to the Pine County Board of Commissioners at their April meeting.

In the report, Strobl explained that the 185 deaths investigated was an increase of seven percent over the 2014 total.

Of the 185 deaths, 86 were registered hospice patients and 135 cremations

were approved.

Of the 28 autopsies performed, seven deaths were determined to have been due to natural causes. The decedents ranged in age from 36 to 70 years and included a 50-year-old woman who died due to influenza.

Seventeen deaths were classified as accidental. Six of these were motor vehicle related incidents with decedents ranging from 18 to 54 years of age. Three incidents involved substance use: two male drivers were intoxicated with alcohol, and a woman who had methamphetamine in her system was struck while standing in a roadway.

Of the other accidental deaths, three

were due to drug toxicity: two women, in their 20s and 40s respectively, used morphine; and a man in his 20s used someone else’s methadone.

Four people died outdoors with two deaths involving substance use: a man in his 70s intoxicated with alcohol, died of environmental cold exposure; and a man in his 50s, under the influence of methamphetamine, was found in Mud Lake. In addition, a man in his 60s, sedated by multiple medications, drowned in a bathtub.

Lastly, three people, aged 86 to 93 years, died due to complications of injuries sustained in a fall from standing height.

There were five deaths classified as suicide. The decedents were all male, ranging in age from 33 to 52 years.

One death was classified as undetermined in manner: a 27-year-old woman, intoxicated with alcohol, was witnessed to crash her vehicle after suddenly accelerating.

One death, of a 59-year-old man, was classified as homicide.

In addition, three incidents of found bones were investigated. In all incidents, the bones were deemed non-human.

County board sets traveling meetings

Lightning makes shocking wake-up call A longtime Pine County resident living on Henriette Road woke up with a start on her bedroom floor just after 6 a.m. on April 24 with a crack of thunder ringing in her ears. Coming down to her kitchen, she found the lightning strike had exploded the insulation off the cord to her telephone, shooting bits of it more than 10 feet away.

As part of its efforts to reach out to the public on key issues, the Pine County Board has scheduled a series of special meetings throughout the summer in each of the five commissioner districts.

The first meeting, which covered a review of the county’s role and priorities for economic development, took place on Tuesday at the Pine Innovation Center.

Roads and financing of county highway projects will be the topic for discussion at a meeting on Tuesday, May 24, which gets underway at 9 a.m. at the Pokegama Town Hall, 18336 Town Hall Road, Pine City. The meeting will be followed by a road tour of key county highway projects.

Commissioners will meet with area state legislators for a Legislative Update following their regular meeting on June 7 in Sandstone.

A special meeting at 9 a.m. Tuesday, June 28 will focus on the county’s new Comprehensive Plan, along with an update on development of the Oberstar Trail through Pine County. That meeting will take place at the Duquette Community Hall.

County officials will hear an update on law enforcement and begin to discuss the county’s 2017 budget at a special meeting scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 26 at the Aazhoomog Community Center at Lake Lena, east of Hinckley.

Commissioners will wrap up the series of special meetings with two sessions on Aug. 26 and 30. That’s when department heads will present their 2017 budget requests. Both meetings start at 9 a.m. in the Board Room at the Pine County Courthouse.

Sheriff wants to hear from Pine County It has been a little over a year since I have been in office and I am very pleased with the opportunity to bring you some updates.

One of the programs I wanted to bring back to the county was the K-9. I am happy to announce that the program is soon to be starting up.

The dog has been purchased and is with the handler and their family. Training started in mid March and should be completed by June. We look forward to the abilities that only a canine can bring the agency and the comPine County to munity we serve. A canine is invaluable when it comes Sheriff to searching, whether it is Jeff for suspicious items, drugs or lost persons. A canine Nelson also can search areas that their human partner is not able to, or it is unsafe for them to search.

When we looked at the canine program we decided to secure funds for the purchase and training costs through donations. The hope was that we could purchase one canine this spring and add another later this year. I am very pleased with the outpouring of support for the program both in encouragement and financially. There have been several sizable donations from civic organizations and groups. There have also been individuals and families that have donated. We heard from one family that the kids decided to do odd jobs to raise money and then donated that to the fund. Another youth contacted me specifically about raising support for a bullet resistant vest for the canine. There are three county employees who will be raising money for the program while they run in the Grandma’s marathon. Google search -Race for the pine county K9. I am humbled by the support for the Sheriff’s Office and this program.

The support for the Sheriff’s Office has been seen and heard in many other areas as well; whether it has been as we look to re-establish the neighborhood watch program or revitalize the Reserve program, people have been willing to support us and their communities. The last area of support that I have seen and heard is the day to day “thank yous” that have been coming in. I have received letters and phone calls from many people over the past year telling me the positive impact a deputy has had on them or their family. To me this is a great indicator of the health of the department. I also have had to smile when I have talked to people who call to say thanks and then make a comment that we probably do not hear that enough. It is true that we SEE NELSON, PAGE 5

Allison w three-and-a-half was m months pregnant w with her second child. The drunk driver that killed this beautiful young family was a repeat offender who had an alcohol level of 0.25.

During the ceremony, survivors of drunk drivers told their stories. One survivor was a Duluth police officer who was struck by a drunk driver ten days before retirement. For example, when a childhood friend of mine was killed by a drunk driver, his wife became a widow at the age of 30. Another common characteristic is that the victimization is random.

Most victims were in the wrong place at the wrong time while engaged in their normal activities. For instance, the Duluth police officer was driving to work; the Deutscher family was heading to a family reunion in Bismarck.

Although I believe in aggressive prosecution of DWIs, I’m one of few prosecutors in the state who is passionate about prevention. I prefer solutions that eliminate drunk driving. compiled a list of the five bars that produced the most DWIs and sent a letter with information about server training to those establishments.

The result was that more servers attended training, DWIs originating from those bars dropped, and the establishments helped shield themselves from liability. After becoming county attorney, I’ve implemented the program in Pine County.

My staff and I also teach at a quarterly L.E.A.D. (Local Education for Accountable Decisions) class.

L.E.A.D. is an education class for first time DWI offenders. The course was recently developed by the Pine County Attorney’s Office, Pine County Probation, the Pine County Sheriff’s Office, and chemical use professionals. The goal of the class is to prevent participants from becoming repeat offenders.

I’m also the vice chair of Minnesota Safe Ride. Minnesota Safe Ride is a nonprofit that operates Safe Cab, a program that provides

FREDERICKSON: Safe Cab program saves lives FROM PAGE 4

cab rides home to patrons of participating bars and restaurants who consume alcohol.

Safe Cab operates in Pine County, Isanti County and Kanabec County. The cab service in Pine County is provided by Attaboys’ Taxi Service of Sandstone. Cab rides are free up to $15 (about seven miles). The program was pioneered by Isanti County Judge James Dehn, a nationally recognized innovator of DWI prevention and sentencing programs. Since Safe Cab’s inception, 11,000 rides were provided for over 20,000 people. The program has helped reduce the

number of DWIs in Pine County by 61 percent, and has likely saved lives.

Besides protecting public safety, Safe Cab makes economic sense. The average ride cost is $10.50, which is a bargain compared with the costs of a DWI. For instance, first time DWI offenders can expect fines of over $500, up to $10,000 in attorney’s fees, $680 in license fees, chemical assessment fees, class fees, ignition interlock fees, numerous missed work days, and potential loss of employment.

Repeat offenders can expect substantially higher costs and fines, including forfeiture of a vehicle. Safe Cab can make go-

ing out for an evening more enjoyable by removing the anxiety of drinking and driving consequences.

Safe Cab is funded through a combination of sources including liquor distributors, participating bars, grants and community donations. Despite the numerous contributors, Pine County’s program is always in need of donations and participating locations. Fireworks, DWI laws make sense

To the Editor: I would like to respond to Bill Brown’s letter. I feel Mr. Brown has to look at some facts to understand where Mr. Rarick is coming from.

First the fireworks bill. Forty-three states allow Class C fireworks including Minnesota. In 2014 there were only 71 injuries and no deaths from fireworks. From 20002014 there were 106 deaths, which is tragic, but people are still using fireworks especially around the Fourth of July.

Let’s compare those injuries and deaths to something else. In 2014 there were 29,439 injured people in car accidents 1,044 were severe.

Also during the same year 361 were killed in Minnesota alone.

Yes, if we allow fireworks some are going to get injured and some killed. How far do we go to protect stupid people from themselves? Let’s take responsibility for our actions.

I agree that what Mr. Rarick has proposed will not stop a drunk from driving.

But neither has MADD. He’s trying something. There is a law on the books that if it’s extended to drunk drivers you will have something to scream about, but it will cut drunk driving by about 75 percent.

To the Editor: Having taught a unit on Women’s History and being a lifelong supporter of women’s rights, I was very pleased to read that Harriet Tubman’s picture will be on the front of the twenty-dollar bill. This remarkable woman, born into slavery in the 1820s, became one of the foremost leaders of the Underground Railroad after she had escaped from the South. Time and time again, she returned to help other slaves get to freedom in the North.

Harriet had two rules for the slaves she was helping(1) She was the boss, and (2) No one could turn back. She always carried both a gun and a jar of paregoric (to put the crying babies to sleep).

Using spirituals as the signal of where and when the slaves should gather, she successfully escorted over 300 people to freedom. She never lost a “passenger.”

During the Civil War, she worked as a nurse and parttime soldier. Living into her 90s, Harriet worked for the suffrage for women movement in the early years of the 20th century.

Once again, kudos to Treasury Secretary Jack Liu for an excellent choice to put on the front of the $20 bill.

Miss Pine City hopes to leave legacy of service

As the current Miss Pine City, I have more duties than looking pretty and waving from a float, though many do not know that. A major part of my being Miss Pine City is completing a legacy project; this project was instituted a few years ago by the Miss Pine City Committee in order to have the reigning ambassador find a cause that speaks to her, shows her continued support for an organization, and builds and fosters a relationship with the people of our community. As part of this project, I was asked to choose an established organization in an area with which I strongly connected to during my community involvement during pageant preparation.

During my volunteer work last spring and summer, I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Pine Community Food Shelf; this then was the organization I felt I wanted to continue as my project. Every Thursday since August, I have been donating my time and helping out by gathering groceries, sweeping the floors, and washing dishes. Added up, I have donated 32 hours of my time and will continue to volunteer there until I go to college.

ally worked with the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church congregation as I have attended church there all my life. I spoke to the congregation on two Sundays, and I had a friendly competition between the two services: 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. My mom and I decorated jars and a poster to have in the back of the sanctuary to show how much was being raised during the “competition.” The competition continued throughout the month of March so that it would qualify for Food Share

month. Since it was covered under the food share month and the money got in on time, the money was matched dollar for dollar by the food share organization. On my side, the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church congregation raised $1,807 dollars.

They really did an awesome job, and I would like to thank everyone who helped support the cause.

As one of the first three ambassadors to work through the legacy project, I am very pleased with the results. I have learned this year that it

takes a hard worker and a Chatty Cathy to work at the food shelf, and it would not have been possible to complete this task without the support of Mrs. Magel and my mother. Finally, I would like to say a special thank you to the food shelf for allowing me to spend so much time there and my community for giving me the opportunity to serve as the Miss Pine City Ambassador this past year; it has truly been a life changing experience.

Frederickson receives MADD award Pine County Attorney Reese Frederickson received the Outstanding Greater Minnesota Prosecutor of the Year Award at the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Minnesota’s annual awards ceremony. Frederickson was recognized for creating a “Last Place of Drink” program in drunk driving cases. Reese was also recognized for his work as vice chair of Minnesota Safe Ride, a local non-profit organization that has provided over 20,000 cab rides to patrons of drinking establishments in Pine, Isanti, Chisago and Kanabec counties. The program has helped to substantially reduce DWIs in those counties.

The mission of Mothers Against Drunk Driving is to end drunk driving, help fight drugged driving, support the victims of these violent crimes, and prevent underage drinking.

Fishing licenses increase by 50 cents in 1941 10 Years Ago, 2006 The theme was “Bella Notte” and the look was elegant at the Pine City High School senior prom Saturday night. The post prom party featured “Only in America” as the theme. Vicki Foss, youth pastor at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, and band director Brad Mariska made sure everyone knew it, hamming it up as Lady Liberty and Uncle Sam. FLCCA members from Pine City High School were at Golden Horizons on Friday to color Easter eggs with the residents.

The Pine Area Lions recently wrapped up their card marathon for this year. The winners are as follows: Womens 500: Kathy Bankers and Miriam Ryan, first place; Millie Baker and Regina Reiser, second; and Marge Hobson and Gwen Mohr, third. Couples 500: John and Carol Skluzacek, first; Odell and Bernice Nordby, second and Cary and Jan Rootkie, third.

Fans were urged to come out and watch the high school baseball team. Eric Shuey plays shortstop, Nic Westling plays outfield, Kris Moulton is the Dragons catcher and Steven Linzmeier plays second base.

Student Achievers this week are 9th grader Derek Nelson, son of Paul and Heidi Carlson, and third grader Logan LeClair, son of Jamie and LeAnn LeClair.

Derek starts many class discussions and challenges other students to think. Logan is a hard worker and always strives to do his best. He always has an interesting fact to share and is doing an awesome job in reading and math.

Skip Pitzen, playing the role of bailiff in the “Jail and Bail” fundraiser, managed to raise $22,000 for the American Cancer Society. Theresa Davidson, office manager at Atscott Manufacturing in Pine City, was pictured held at the American Legion Jail. Her bail was $350 and she was apprehended on charges of “being a pain in the rear.” Michelle Purdy, office coordinator at the Pine City Eye Clinic, was apprehended by Pitzen for putting frames on contact lenses.

The conservation department announced fishermen who have purchased 1941 licenses at the former 50-cent fee must cash them in on new dollar licenses as set up by the legislature.

For the second consecutive year, the agricultural students of Pine City High School have won in all district judging events. These events include poultry, dairy crop and general livestock judging.

Word has just been received that the State Department of Vocational Education has recommended Chester Johnson, a student at the local high school, for the Minnesota State Farmer degree for high scholastic rating, leadership and because he established a good project in agriculture.

About 200 friends and relatives attended the silver wedding anniversary open house honoring Mr. and Mrs. Emil France on Sunday, May 5.

Over 100 persons were on hand at the Rock Creek School to bid farewell to Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Smith. Mr. Smith was the manager of the Rock Creek Creamery for the past 32 years.

The village council of Pine City adopted a resolution stating that the development association of Pine City be allowed to erect a public bathhouse on the east end of First Avenue on the shore of Cross Lake.

We are pleased to notice that the property owners of downtown Pine City are having the sidewalks repaired. Some of them were in really bad shape. The walk in front of Piper’s and the walk from the corner to the Bantelon barber shop have been repaired.

In Rock Creek, Miss Ellen Louise, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Rydlund and Mr. William M. Hanson, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Hanson, were united in marriage at the home of the bride’s parents on April 30.

Pine City Clean-up campaign will begin on May 1 and go through May 7. We hope to have a cleaner and healthier Pine City when the drive is over.

driving if they are 18 years old or older. I understand that it is illegal for anyone under that age to be “on a cell phone.” Does that apply to a “hands free” device such as a “blue tooth?”

Anyone under 18 years of age may not operate a vehicle while using a cell phone, whether handheld or hands free, when the vehicle is in motion. A driver with a provisional license may use a cell phone to call 911 in case of an emergency.

So a “hands free” device, while a vehicle is in motion, is also illegal for someone under 18. The exception of “obtaining emergency assistance” is quite limited in my professional opinion. Calling “911” would be a good example.

Minnesota is involved in a serious effort to reduce the fatalities and serious injury crashes on our roadways. It involves a partnership with a mission of “Towards Zero Deaths” (TZD).

I believe distracted driving is the next dangerous epidemic plaguing our roadways and the statistics show that. Distracted driving contributes to one in four crashes in Minnesota. Ask yourself what was the most important text message you ever sent or received.

Now ask yourself, is that text worth your life or another life on the road?

truck shall be driven or parked on any highway with tailgate or tailboard hanging down or projecting from the vehicle except while such vehicle is being loaded or unloaded, and except when a load on the tailboard renders impossible the closing of the tailboard.” So with the information you provided me, I would say that it is illegal, unless you are hauling something that sticks out beyond the pickup box.

I believe this becomes what the main issue of this law is: securement and visibility.

Anytime you are hauling or transporting any item, make sure it is secured. Not only can this help from losing your item on the highway and creating a traffic hazard, but in the event of a crash its securement can add to your safety in preventing injury from another projectile. When hauling anything that sticks out beyond remember this: M.S.S. 169.52, “When the load upon any vehicle extends to the rear four feet or more beyond the bed or body of such vehicle there shall be displayed at the extreme rear end of the load, at the times when lighted lamps on vehicles are required in this chapter, a red light or lantern plainly visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the sides and rear. The light or lantern required under this section shall be in addition to the rear light required upon every vehicle. At any time when no lights are required there shall be displayed at the extreme rear end of such load a red, yellow or orange flag or cloth not less than 16 inches square.”

The Minnesota Department of Corrections has released a 2016 profile of the 1,003 inmates currently incarcerated in its Rush City Correctional Facility.

According to the report, the average age of inmates was 35, with more than 80 percent between ages 21 and 55. The youngest inmate was 18 and the oldest 80 years old.

The average sentence for inmates was 100 months. Seventy-six inmates were serving life sentences.

been convicted of multiple crimes, and inmates were serving an average of 1.6 sentences per offender.

A list of the top eight most common offenses included a total of 262 active sentences for assault, 247 for criminal sexual conduct, 240 for homicide, 164 for domestic assault, 117 for robbery, 114 for drugs, 102 for burglary and 99 for weapons. Nearly 60 percent of inmates came from the seven-county Twin Cities metro area, with the rest coming from outstate Minnesota, and just 15 coming from outside the state.

Seventy-six percent of

inmates had received at least a verified high school diploma or GED. Racially, the prison housed 489 black inmates, 426 white inmates, 91 American Indian or Alaskan Native inmates, 28 Asian or Pacific Islander and three unknown. Also, 46 inmates described themselves as being of Hispanic ethnicity as well as belonging to one of the above groups.

Exactly half of the inmates described themselves as Christian, with 28 percent describing no preference.

New Pine County mystery looks into ‘The Deacon’s Demise’

Author Dean Hovey has published the fifth book in his series of Pine County mysteries, and is looking forward to visiting the Pine City Library for a May 7 book signing.

“The Deacon’s Demise” follows fictional Pine County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Floyd Swenson and other characters – some on the wrong side of the law – in the wake of a car explosion that kills a pillar of the community.

The opening scene of the book was inspired by a church meeting Hovey himself attended, where strong words and feelings created an emotional explosion of their own.

“I was shocked,” Hovey said. “And that just really stuck in my mind.”

In the wake of the deacon’s murder, Minnesota BCA agent Laurie Lone Eagle and Floyd also investigate a nearby child abduction, followed by an informant’s report of a local drug ring. Could it all be coincidence? In the course of his investi-

gation, Floyd soon starts to wonder if all the lines come together, and who else might be at risk.

Readers will enjoy coming across the names of local roads and land-

marks, following Floyd’s travels in their minds as he traverses Pine County and the state in search of answers.

Hovey stretched his literary legs a bit with this

novel, for the first time getting into the mind of one of the criminals of the novel.

“I struggled with that,” Hovey said. “One of them was led astray. He had a tough life, went down the wrong path and made some bad decisions, but his upbringing told him he needed to be better and he needed to be doing better things.”

He said it was both challenging and fun to explore new scenarios for his characters.

“They were really things that made me reach,” he said. “I brought in a lot of experiences from my own life and things I had read ... and tried to pull all those pieces together.”

Hovey said he’s enjoyed getting to know Pine County during the course of writing his novels, and has the next installment ready for the editor.

But in the meantime, mystery lovers can meet Hovey and pick up a copy of “The Deacon’s Demise” at the Pine City Library starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 7.

City receives grant to support dementia victims STAFF REPORT NEWS@PINECITYMN.COM

Ten communities, including Pine City, have been awarded a grant from ACT on Alzheimer’s to closely consider how best to prepare their communities for the impacts of Alzheimer’s and other dementias and to work toward community-wide support of people touched by the disease.

The organization reports that Pine City will receive $7,000 to help carry out a community engagement process to help adopt “dementia friendly” practices, and develop programs and services specific to the needs of Pine City’s residents. The city may receive additional future funding.

There are six other communities and groups receiving funds in rural areas: Arlington (City of Arlington), Ely (Northwoods Partners), Granite Falls (Living at Home Block Nurse Program – Granite Falls), Litchfield (Meeker Memorial Hospital), and Sartell (Opportunity Matters), and four urban areas: Anoka (Impact Services), Chanhassen (City of Chanhassen), Duluth (The Victory Fund), and West African Community in Brooklyn Center (Holy Trinity Episcopal Church). The new communities join 33 existing communities statewide.

The Alzheimer’s Association estimates there are 91,000 Minnesotans age 65 and older living with Alzheimer’s and many thousands more with other dementias. ACT on Alzheimer’s has developed best practice tools and resources to help communities build awareness of dementia and identify strategies relevant to their specific needs, such as training businesses and health care settings on dementia friendly practices, educating law enforcement and reaching out to diverse communities.

“As the population of Minnesota ages, it’s important to build awareness and supportive environments for people living with dementia,” said Emily Farah-Miller, executive co-lead for ACT on Alzheimer’s. “Every part of the community plays a role in creating a culture that develops respect and inclusion for people with dementia, makes services and resources available and promotes meaningful engagement in community life. A dementia-friendly community supports care partners and can make it possible for people with dementia to extend the time outside of residential care settings. That helps everyone – families and taxpayers who pay for institutional care, employers who have workers trying to balance work and caregiving demands, and most importantly, people living with Alzheimer’s.”

The grant awards are funded through Blue Plus (an HMO affiliate of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota), Medica Foundation, Stratis Health’s Building Healthier Communities Award, and Greater Twin Cities United Way and administered through the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging.

Dragons run hard at Foley Invite

Pine City players compete in 3-on-3 Pierz tournament On Saturday, April 2, teams from Pine City competed in a three-on-three tournament at Pierz. Track teams in Pine City had just one meet this past week, and it was a great test of their skills. The Dragons competed at the Foley Invite on Friday, April 22 and ran against some stiff competition.

Both the boys and girls teams finished fourth out of eight teams competing.

“It was a great evening for a meet,” said head coach Jared Clementson.

“The sun was out and there wasn’t much wind, which helped many performances throughout the day. We were up against great teams and top competitors in the state. Most of the teams at this meet are in our Section, which helps give us a glimpse of what we are up against. Some of our athletes did great against the stiff competition and others learned that there is more work to be done.”

On the girls side Pine City finished with a total of 94 points, only 25.5 points behind first place Litchfield. The Dragons let a few points slip away by not doing as well in some events they are normally stronger in, and the team was only able to get a limited contribution from Allison Gusk, who has been out with a hip injury. Gusk, one of the strongest competitors on the team, was able to run in the 4x800m relay, but remained limited. That relay team, which also features Makayla Butenhoff (2:36), Grace Langmade (2:35), and Alaina Steele (2:27) won by 14 seconds in an excellent time of 10:14.7, a time that ranks the four among the top in the state.

Elsie Lundquist continued to have a major impact as she scored a near perfect 38 points. Lundquist started off the meet with her only second place finish coming in the 100m hurdles where she tied the school record with a hand held time of 16.3 seconds. Lundquist then went on to win all three of her jumping events taking first in the high jump (5’ 2”), the triple jump (32’ 6”), and the long jump (16’ 0.25”).

It was a down week for the Pine City Dragons boys tennis team.

The squad struggled to be competitive as they dropped a pair of lopsided matches and fell to 1-2.

second in a time of 2:32.27. Ashli Webster had an excellent race in the 3200m where she outkicked two girls to take second place in a time of 12:50.48. The 4x400m relay (4:26.63) team of Aaleaha Thieman, Alexis Thieman, Alexis Pankonin, and Steele went from fifth to second as Steele finished with an amazing 61 second split.

As for the Dragons boys, the squad held its own, placing fourth with a total of 103.2 points, only 18.2 points out of first.

“Our boys did a great job,” said Clementson, “however they also missed points in a few key events. The boys team has shown steady improvement over the past few meets.”

Eli Grubbs was Pine City’s top point scorer for the meet with 20 points and was the only member of the team to win an event taking both the 1600m and 3200m races. In the 1600m, Grubbs took the lead partway through the second lap and never looked back, winning by 12 seconds in a time of 4:46.49. In the 3200m, Grubbs again ran a well-paced race and was able to take the lead in the first mile. Grubbs battled the last 300m, where there were multiple lead exchanges, but Grubbs managed to edge the other runner right at the line for a winning time of 10:45.73.

Other solid performances for the boys came from Dennis Skalicky, who took second in the 400m (54.73), with Tommy Ryan right behind him in third (54.89).

Aaron Pulkrabek placed second in the long jump (20’ 0.75”) and third in the triple jump (39’ 1.5”). Sully Schmidt placed third in the high jump (5’ 6”) while Remington Steele earned a third in the 800m (2:16.18).

The Dragons boys 4x200m relay team of Skalicky, Adam Seals, Brandon Haskovec and Pulkrabek took third in a time of 1:36.54.

Next on the docket for the Dragons is the Chengwatana, an 11-team meet they are scheduled to host on Friday, April 29 starting at 4 p.m.

HERMANTOWN 6, PINE CITY 1 On Tuesday, April 19, the Dragons traveled to Hermantown to play the Hawks. Things didn’t go well for Pine City as only Jon Blake was able to earn a win.

“It was not pretty at all,” said head coach Rick Engelstad. “With the exception of a couple of boys, the Dragons did not come ready to play today.

We definitely have some work to do.”

Blake was Pine City’s lone point scorer, picking up a win at second singles (6-4, 6-1). Blake

showed great effort and Engelstad was pleased with how he set points up to earn the win. Outside of Blake’s performance, there weren’t many other positives.

“The message after this match,” said Engelstad, “is we have to come ready each and every time out.

Hopefully this will be a good learning moment for our team.”

Two days later, Pine City suffered another very tough loss against a talented Falcons team.

FOLEY 7, PINE CITY 0 Foley is a Granite Ridge conference foe, but is also ranked fourth in the state in Class A. Pine City played better than they had earlier in the week but the Falcons were just too much to handle.

“Foley was very impressive,” said Engelstad.

“But I thought we did a

much better job of competing for points today compared to Tuesday.

Foley is just a very good team.”

The Dragons have a very busy stretch coming as the spring progresses.

Starting on Thursday, April 14, Pine City had a match or tournament scheduled on seven out of 10 days. After matches against St. Cloud Cathedral and Cambridge-Isanti, the Dragons will play multiple opponents at tournaments in Hibbing on April 30, and in Litchfield on May 2.

Pine City will also host the Art Nelson Invitational on May 7, and has several other matches scheduled in between these tournaments with plenty of opportunity to improve as the spring progresses.

Golf squads show improvement as they launch into conference play

Pine City’s golf team kicked off conference play this past week, and had positive results. The boys and girls squads competed on Monday, April 18 at Bulrush and the girls hit the links again on Wednesday, April 20 in Milaca.

“I am pleased with the results for this point in the season,” said head

coach Anna Potvin.

For the boys at Bulrush, Ryan Gamec Bromberg was co-medalist with a round of 76, which was the lowest round any competitor had on the day. His efforts helped power the Dragons to a third place finish, just one stroke behind second place Aitkin and four strokes behind winner Mille Lacs.

average scores from last year. The Dragons finished six shots ahead of second place Barnum and 20 shots ahead of the third place finisher.

Pine City was led by Kristina Knutson and Holly Emslander, both of whom shot team-low 109s.

Ally Tracy was just a shot behind her teammates with a 110.

The girls also went to Milaca for their 6-6-6 Invitational (six holes

scramble, six holes best ball, six holes alternating shot) where they had a few girls playing in a JV/ Varsity meet for the first time.

“They did well,” said Potvin. “We saw a lot of teams we are not used to playing with, and with these new teams came some fierce competition.

It was a good opportunity to see that, while we have made strides and are competing well with our

conference opponents, there is still room for improvement. We’re off to a great start and are looking forward to the upcoming weeks.”

The pairing of Knutson and Anna Miller led the way for the Dragons with a 96. Lindsay Miller and Emmy Kuzel teamed up to score a 117 and Marie Larson and Taylor Kline finished with a 121.

Softball jumps Jaguars, drops two

Pine City’s softball team added a win and two more losses to their 2016 season total this past week, and the group now sits at 2-4 so far on the season. Playing three conference games in four days, the Dragons started the week by earning their first home win of the spring and finished it by narrowly losing in an extra-innings battle.

PINE CITY 9, HINCKLEY-FINLAYSON 6 On Monday, April 18 the Dragons pulled out a win in front of their home crowd to earn their second “W” of the season. Morganne Johnson and Angela DeGray each had a pair of hits while Miki Kloeckl had a single to help key Pine

City at the plate.

“A good team effort with many different defenders making plays and getting outs,” head coach Jena Dennis said after the win.

Pine City Dragons jumped on the Jaguars early and scored five runs in the first inning.

DeGray started the scoring off with a two-run double, and she would finish the game with five RBI’s. Kloeckl was great inside the pitchers circle as well, allowing just three earned runs and two hits during seven innings of work. Pine City never trailed in the game after jumping out to the big lead.

“Hinck ley-Fin layson couldn’t get anything going as long as McKenzie was pitching,” added Dennis. Hinckley-Finlayson managed just

two hits off of Kloeckl, who allowed three earned runs, walked five and struck out six during her seven innings of work.

BRAHAM 19, PINE CITY 0 It was an entirely different story for the Dragons on Tuesday. The Braham Bombers came to town and lit up the scoreboard. The Bombers were hot at the plate with four doubles and two singles in the game, but the Dragons didn’t help their own cause by committing three errors.

Johnson had a pair of hits for Pine City and Kloeckl had four strike outs.

“We couldn’t muster up enough to get the second out, between some timely hits and errors,” coach Dennis said

while explaining her team’s defensive struggles.

AITKIN 6, PINE CITY 5 (8 INNINGS) On Thursday, April 21 the Dragons lost in Aitkin in a thrilling, extra-innings game.

“We started out hot in the batters box,” said Dennis, “but stalled in the last three innings allowing Aitkin to stay in the game. We came up short, leaving bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth with a strike out and a base runner getting hit by the batted ball (that would have made a gap) causing our third out.”

The Dragons jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when a single by DeGray scored Erin Pavelka.

The Dragons added a run in the second, then followed it up with

one more in the third, but Aitkin battled back and ultimately took the lead when it mattered most.

Savannah Larson had a nice day at the plate, reaching base three times with one run scored and one RBI. Hailey Hippen ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision lasting just three innings with three earned runs allowed.

As April comes to a close, the Dragons’ schedule gets even busier. If weather cooperates, the team hopes to get four games in over the next week, including a pair of games on Saturday, April 30 in Mora against both Silver Bay and Ogilvie.

Dragon baseball squad searching for hits

It was a tough week for the Dragons baseball team as the boys lost three games by 10 runs each. The Dragons fell to 1-5 on the year and have dropped five straight as they search for an identity and mix up their lineups. The squad has just three seniors so many younger players are being asked to step into key roles.

“We’re feeling pretty good, we have a pretty good team but we have to keep our heads together and keep playing hard,” said senior catcher Colby Pavelka. “I’m trying to be a leader on the field and get the guys going. As far as young pitchers, Isaiah Gonyea and Nick Hansmann are looking good, Mike Lee was also throwing good, and Austin Hansmann too. The biggest thing for a young pitcher is to keep your head and relax.”

While the pitching rotation has been in flux, the team is also looking to jumpstart its offense.

“I want to be one of the leaders out there,” said senior center fielder Marcus Scarbrough, who bats third in the order. “The thing for me is, you have

to know your baseball. With playing time comes experience, and that takes time. In the batters box, Drew Steele is really hitting the ball well. Jake Lunceford too, he’s got some experience and with more experience, he could be a machine.”

HINCKLEY-FINLAYSON 11, PINE CITY 1 (6 INNINGS) The week started out with the team losing at home on Monday, April 18.

Pine City made good contact with the ball and gathered nine hits, but struggled to get the key hits then that they needed to score runs.

“Hinckley is one of the favorites both in the conference and in their section,” pointed out head coach Ted Hasz. “They hit the ball well and made plays in the field when they needed to. We felt we competed well with a good team, we just could not get the timely hits. Give the Jaguars credit too, they have a very nice team.”

Nick Hansmann took the loss for the Dragons, giving up five earned runs in four innings of work. Kyle Peters finished the game on the mound and did not give up an earned run. Pavelka, Steele and Jake Rademacher each had a

pair of hits while Scarbrough and Brendan Westbrook had one hit apiece.

BRAHAM 12, PINE CITY 2 (5 INNINGS) Unfortunately for Pine City, it was a similar outcome the following night against the Bombers. Pine City struggled defensively with four errors in the first inning and found themselves down seven runs.

“After the first inning the game was very even,” Hasz said of the way his team played the final four innings. “It is a cliché, but it is very true that you can’t give teams extra outs.”

Rademacher suffered the loss on the mound, giving up three earned runs.

Lunceford also saw his first varsity pitching action of the season and gave up one earned run. The Dragons could only muster one hit on the day as Nick Hansmann picked up a solid single.

“We didn’t have the energy that we needed,” said Hasz. “We need to keep one mistake at one mistake and not let it snowball into more mistakes. We know mistakes will happen, we just need to be able to move on and minimize the number of outs that the other team is given.”

AITKIN 12, PINE CITY 2 The week ended with yet another game cut short by the 10-run rule. For the second time in two games the Dragons fell behind in the first inning as the Gobblers scored five runs in the first to pull away. Aitkin also got four unearned runs in the fourth inning to shut the door.

Austin Hansmann came in the game in relief of Gonyea in the first inning and pitched well, giving up three earned runs in nearly four innings of work.

“Gonyea,” said Hasz, “pitched very well in his first outing of the year, was not as sharp this time out, but is a very good pitcher and will be counted on as the season goes on. The Gobblers are a section favorite and have a very nice team. We are using these early season games to see what we need to work on and see where we need to be to make a run in the playoffs. ” Westbrook picked up the only Dragons hit. Pine City was able to draw seven walks. Pine City has upcoming games against Mora, Milaca, Duluth Marshall and Ogilvie to focus on as they look to get back on the right track.

Junior High Pops Concert coming up May 5 PRESS RELEASE

The Junior High Pops Concert will be presented on Thursday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. All are invited to attend this free concert and enjoy the music presented by the outstanding students of the Pine City Community.

The choirs will go first, singing an array of songs from country and Disney, to contemporary.

Songs include “Wagonwheel”

by Darius Rucker, to “Love is an

Open Door” from the Disney movie “Frozen.” The Junior High Pine City Singers will make their debut with music from the ever popular musical and movie, “Hairspray” with singing and choreography, it’s sure to get your toes tapping.

The bands will perform highlights from the rock group Chicago, as well as music from the movie series “Lord of the Rings.”

Other favorites include music from the 80s hit movie “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” music from Adele

and a percussion feature titled “Don’t Feed the Drummers.”

Jazz Too! will perform “Stronger than Dirt” which will feature many students in the band, along with the swing classic, “Jive at Five.”

Other dates to note include the Senior High Band Pops Concert on Monday, May 9, and the Senior High Choir Pops Concert on Thursday, May 19. All high school concerts are held in the new auditorium, and begin at 7:30 p.m.

an agent from the Minnesota Federated Humane Societies. After spending more than a week in jail, Doenz and Carlson admitted the probation violation on Sept. 25.

Doenz received another 60 days in jail, and had her sentence converted to a stay of execution. Carlson received 10 days in jail and

kept her previous sentencing status.

On March 3, 2016 it was again reported that Doenz had violated her probation. Doenz was found to have violated her probation on March 22 in Pine County Court, and a new sentence was issued.

Doenz will now serve one year and one day in state prison, minus 77 days already served in Pine

County Jail.

Doenz was previously convicted of cruelty to animals back in 2006. After being released she was charged again, but after a 2007 trial 35 criminal charges relating to Doenz’s treatment of birds, horses and dogs were acquitted or dismissed.

It was meaningful to her that she worked at Boeing in Washington state building B-17 bombers during WWII. She enjoyed gardening, puzzles, crafts, mail order shopping, and especially her family. Mom and Dad greatly enjoyed their time of owning and running The Branch Café in North Branch.

Ernest “Ernie” Laue of Pine City passed er a away at his home Mond day, April 18, 2016 at the a of 89. age Ernest Herbert Laue was born on Aug. 13, er 1 1926 to Louis and Clara ( (Whiting) Lauer in St. P Paul.

He was raised on t the family farm nine miles east of Pine City, where he attended school through 8th grade. During WWII, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1944 and was honorably discharged in August 1947. That fall, while roller skating in Grantsburg, Wisconsin, he met Arlene Nelson, his wife of 67 years.

Ernie was employed by the Northern Pacific Railroad for 13 years before going to work for Land-OLakes in Pine City until he retired in 1988.

When Ernie was not at work, he rarely sat still. He was a carpenter, building the home he lived in for 64 years, a handyman who could do his own plumbing or wiring, work on a car or a tractor and fix most things that needed fixing. He enjoyed gardening and playing farm with his John Deere B tractor. He was a skillful fisherman who tied his own jigs, but next to his family, his love was hunting deer which he did right up through last fall.

Ernie is survived by his children: Ronald (Ellen) Lauer of Rush City, Janet (Ron) Christenson of Waconia, Steven (Carol) Lauer of Edina; eight grandchildren: Christopher (Lesley) Lauer, Heather (Allen) Sauerbrey, Allison (Rob) Barmann, Michael (Tera) Lauer, Amber Christenson, Brett (Marissa) Lauer, Wyatt Lauer, Samira Lauer and Kris Moulton; 19 great-grandchildren; brother William (Marlene) Lauer of Ischpiming, Michigan, sister Bernice Murphy of Ogilvie; brothers-in-law: Myles Stockdill of Pine City and Alden (Marian) Nelson of Oakdale; sisters-in-law: Mildred Lauer of Monticello, Donnis (Gene) Benson of St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin; many nieces and nephews.

Pine City High School.

In 1945 he was drafted into the United States Army during World War II. He was assigned as an anti-tank crewman in Hawaii, and then was sent to Japan with the American Occupation forces.

Jim returned to Pine City upon discharge from the Army. He worked for the Northern Pacific Railway.

Later he was employed with the Pine County Highway Department for 33-1/2 years, retiring on Jan. 1, 1983.

Jim met and married Ina Miller and they had one son, James Richard “Rick.” Jim enjoyed playing golf for many years and helped design the Pine City Golf course. Papa Jim loved spending time with his two grandchildren, James and Marina.

Jim was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed.

Jim is survived by his wife Ina, son James “Rick” (Dawnelle) D’Aoust of Lakeville, grandchildren James Wallace D’Aoust and Marina Mae D’Aoust, many other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents Wallace and Esther D’Aoust, brother Wallace D’Aoust, and half-brother Gib. Pastor Josiah Hoagland will officiate at services for James at 3 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2016 at the Swanson Funeral Chapel, Pine City. A time of visitation is planned for one hour prior to the service at the Chapel.

A time of visitation was held Thursday at Swanson Funeral Chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church. Music was provided by Cindy Novy and Glenna Reierson.

Casket Bearers included his eight grandchildren. Interment took place at Birchwood Cemetery, Pine City.

Murial Ditty Murial Ditty, age 81, of Pine City, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2016.

She was a past Worthy Matron of Order of the Eastern Star for both Robbinsdale and Pine City.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Douglas; sister, Lorraine Quale. She is survived by her son, Terrance (Kari); granddaughter, Sarah.

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, May 11 at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 7835 Brooklyn Blvd, Brooklyn Park. Service will begin at 6 p.m. with a visitation one hour prior. There will be a private interment.

Edna G. Hauger Edna Gladys Hauger of Pine City passed away at Lakeside Medical Center in Pine City April 21, 2016 at the age of 91. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, April 30, 2 p.m., at the Swanson Funeral Chapel in Pine City with a time of visitation and reviewal one hour prior to the service. Kim M. Davis Kim Marie Sauter D Davis passed away a her home in Rock at C Creek on Thursday, A April 21, 2016 at the age o 42. of Kim was born to Dona and Pamela (Walald t ton) Sauter on March 1 1974 in Grantsburg, 1, W Wisconsin.

Kim enjoyed spendi ing time with her husband Tracy and her family. She loved scrapbooking, camping, 4-wheeling, traveling and spending time with her cousins, nieces and nephews.

Although Kim was struggling with health issues, she never allowed her illness to stop her from doing the things she loved. Kim was a loving, spunky, and funny individual who had a wonderful sense of humor. She loved to joke around with anyone, whether they were family or a new acquaintance.

Kim is survived by her loving husband of 24 years, Tracy Davis of Rock Creek; parents Don and Pam Sauter of Pine City; brother Dean Sauter and his wife Lynn of Pine City; grandmother Mary Sauter of Pine City; father-in-law Greg Davis of Pine City; brothers and sisters-in-law: Vicki Kram and her husband Brian of Cambridge, Darek Davis and his wife Briana of Cambridge, Joanne Haack and her husband Chad of Japan; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

Kristina M. Ouverson Kristina Marie Ouv verson passed away u unexpectedly on T Thursday, April 21, 2 2016 at her home in S Croix Falls, WisSt. c consin at the age of 37.

Krissi was born to S Shirley Larson and S Steve Ouverson on J Jan. 16, 1979 in Minn neapolis.

She spent most of her adult years as a Personal Care Attendant caring for disabled adults.

Krissi was a caring soul who liked to spend time with family and friends. Her laugh was contagious and will be remembered by all who knew her. Some of her favorite things were watching scary movies and “scouting” for celebrities.

Krissi is survived by her fiancé Paul Hoover; parents Shirley (Dan) Larson and Steven (Boni) Ouverson; siblings Kathy (Brian) Burma, Elden (Lisa) Ouverson and Jennifer (Andrew) Jungkunz; grandparents Elden and Adrienne Ouverson and nephew Kaiden Ouverson, many other relatives and friends.

Senior High Band preps for May 9 Pops Concert The Pine City Senior High band program is wrapping up their yearly concert schedule with the annual Spring Pops Concert on Monday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Pine City High School Auditorium. This year’s concert will feature Jazz One, select small ensembles, the drum line and concert band. As has become a tradition, the senior class has assisted in selecting a theme: the musical history of video games from “8-bit” technology to the Grammy Award winning compositions found in some of today’s video games.
