Line returns with holiday spectacular Pianist Lorie Line returned to the Pine City High School Auditorium on Sunday, Dec. 11 with her annual Christmas extravaganza. Her show once again included Pine City children who were each given a costume to be a part of her performance of the “Twelve Days of Christmas.”
The Christmas Story In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time
What does a wooden car, a dollhouse, a mermaid, and a horse tread mill power unit have in common? They all found a home at the Pine County Historical Museum in Askov, along with thousands of other unique items. At the turn of the century, the first school in Askov was built. It was called the Mckenzie School. By 1903 it was not big enough, and the Partridge Town Hall housed the school for two years, until the Banning School District built a two-room school house on the site of the current Museum. In 1906, the Dansk Folkesamfund, a group dedicated to preserving Danish culture, purchased land in Askov and formed School District 71. A year later, they completed renovations and additions to the small school house, and hired two teachers to instruct 50 students. Two more years passed by, and they began building a bigger school. Hans Christian Andersen School was dedicated in 1910. It was named after a famous Danish storyteller who wrote children’s books filled with lessons about poverty, greed, vanity and other morality lessons. Some of his most famous stories
include: “The Emperor Has no Clothes,” “The Ugly Duckling,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Thumbelina,” “The Snow Queen,” “The Princess and the Pea” and many others. After 71 years, the original H. C. Andersen School was demolished in 1982. The bell and the nameplate succeeded in being preserved thanks to a “Save the Bell Committee.” The current building was a school until 2004, at which time a new East Central School was built across from Banning State Park. The Pine County Historical Society acquired this building in 2012. It has since become home to an extensive collection of photos, paintings, artifacts and displays representing the history of early settlers of Pine County. The building also houses a Little Mermaid Café, and a creative coop and antique shop, where people can bring their items on commission. There are also banquet rooms available for special events. Fundraising dances, festivals, classes, speakers, and concerts also take place here. The Museum is open daily, and is run solely by volunteers. There are 30 volunteers who come on a weekly basis, SEE MUSEUM, PAGE 14
came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.
