The one-month campaign season for an open state senate seat will come to an end this coming Tuesday. A special election will be held on Feb. 5 to fill the state senate seat for Minnesota’s District 11, which covers all of Pine and Carlton counties and parts of Kanabec and St. Louis counties. Lourey, DFL. All regular polling places across District 11 should be open for the Feb. 5 special election. District 11 residents can register to vote online now or at their polling place on Feb. 5. The state senate seat for District 11 became vacant after Senator Tony Lourey resigned from the position on Jan. 3 in order to become the Minnesota Human Services commissioner in the administration of Governor Tim Walz. Temperatures took a nose dive to -35 Fahrenheit in Pine City on the morning of Jan. 30, as schools closed, planned events and church activities shut down, and businesses held

limited hours or stayed closed until the worst of the big freeze passed. MnDOT warned of black ice on roadways, and reported that there had been many crashes on Interstate 35. SEE FREEZE, PAGE 14

Four men have been charged with cruelty to animals after allegedly participating in a rooster fighting event in the Hinckley area. According to the criminal complaint filed in Pine County Court, on Dec. 23 at 8:32 p.m. two Pine County deputies were

dispatched to the report of suspicious activity off of Highway 48 near Hinckley. The reporting party said there were many vehicles in a field at an abandoned neighboring property, and knew the owners wanted no trespassers. The deputies were aware of recent burglaries in the area.
