VISION FOR THE FUTURE: Pine County working on new comprehensive plan. P8

Storms pass, waters still rising National Weather Service warns Snake River could hit flood levels this Saturday BY MIKE GAINOR EDITOR@PINECITYMN.COM

A major thunderstorm system sweeping through the area on the night of July 11 created havoc in northern Pine County and around Minnesota, but left Pine City mostly unscathed. However, the worst effects of that storm system may be yet to come. Though the National Weather service estimates that Pine City received only three to five inches of rain on July 11-12, areas to the north of and west received as much as eight to 10 inches in the same time period. The Snake River watershed ranges from Aitkin County in the north to the shores of Mille Lacs Lake and nearly all of Kanabec County. This means that much of the torrential rain that hit the region north of Pine City will end up flowing through the Snake River – and through Pine City – on its way to the St. Croix River. By 8:15 on Tuesday, July 12, the level of the Snake River had risen to 4.53 feet, and the National Weather Service was predicting that the river could crest at nine feet – flood stage – by the evening of Saturday, July 16. The National Weather Service also predicted a chance of more thunderstorms in the area on Wednesday, and a chance of rain on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Teen drowns in Kettle River STAFF REPORT NEWS@PINECITYMN.COM

A teenage boy drowned on the afternoon of July 6 after attempting to swim across the Kettle River in northern Pine County. The Pine County Sheriff’s Office reports that at 4:35 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6, dispatchers received a 911 call of a possible drowning in the Kettle River at Banning State Park. Pine County Deputies, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources officers and personnel from the Askov and Sandstone fire departments responded to the scene. First responding officers were informed that three teens were swimming across the Kettle River when one began to have trouble. The other two teens swam out to assist but were unable to help the

swimmer who was struggling. The teens reported seeing the third go under the water and not come back up. The sheriff’s office reported that the area of the river where the incident occurred is no accessible by boat. Officers and first responders carried out a ground search along the shore, which was assisted by an air search from the Minnesota State Patrol helicopter. The St. Louis County Rescue Squad responded from Duluth and assisted in the search with sonar and underwater camera. After hours of searching, the victim was recovered from the river just before 11 p.m. on July 6. The body was transported to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy. The name of the victim has not been released by the Pine County Sheriff’s Office.

Pokegama Lake bridge to be replaced soon BY HENRY FISCHER NEWS@PINECITYMN.COM

The Pine County Road 53 bridge at the south end of Pokegama Lake will be replaced this summer, resulting in a road closure for about three months. Last week the Pine County Board awarded a $759,013.80 contract to low bidder Icon Constructors, LLC, to replace the old timber bridge with a brand new concrete bridge that will closely resemble the nearby $2 million Snake River bridge that was built last year. County Engineer Mark LeBrun said work on the project is expected to start July 25 and be completed

within 65 working days, near the end of this year’s construction season. Highway 53 will be closed at that location during construction but the bridge will be open for boat traffic except during demolition and some intermittent short periods of time during the week, he added. LeBrun said the new bridge will be centered over the existing bridge. It will have a 90 foot long span, 66 feet wide, with no piers. The lowest bridge member will be about the same height as the existing bridge, perhaps an inch higher, he noted, and the channel bottom SEE BRIDGE, PAGE 14
