Team seeks truth behind legend of lost train in Devils Lake BY TODD BECKMANN TODD@BURNETTCOUNTYSENTINEL.COM

What leads explorers to dive on the Titanic or explore an uncharted jungle? The simple answer? Because of what they might find there. This is what drew Grantsburg’s Karl Anderson to Devils Lake in Pine City last weekend. At issue is the legend of the lost train in Devils Lake, a train which supposedly went off the tracks and into Devils Lake in the 1870s. Details are sketchy, to say the least. “There was no newspaper in Pine City at the time so there is no documentation of it happening or not happening,” Anderson said. “We figure that no one was hurt or killed because that would have been documented somehow.” Even though the legend goes back decades, Anderson’s interest started 15 years ago. “We moved an Army tank from Pine City

VICTIM AIRLIFTED According to the criminal complaint filed in Pine County Court, on March 1 at 2:12 a.m., a Pine County deputy was dispatched to the Super America in Pine City on the report of an assault. He found a man standing at the front entrance of SuperAmerica, stumbling and bleeding.

The victim said, “They whipped me, they beat me.” He said the beating was done “at Ted’s house,” and that Ted was one of a group who had beaten him with fists, a shovel, a board and other objects, kicked him and stolen at least $700 cash, a cell phone, and a ring with a blue stone. The deputy recognized the description of the house as being the home of Ted Korf at 15446 Mid River Road in Pokegama Township. According to the criminal complaint, the house “is frequented by known criminals.” The victim was airlifted to North Memorial Hospital to be treated for his injuries. He SEE ASSAULT, PAGE 13
