Nelson wins big in special election BY MIKE GAINOR EDITOR@PINECITYMN.COM
With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Nathan Nelson has been elected the next state representative for District 11B. Nelson, a Republican, easily defeated his DFL rival Tim Burkhardt in the Tuesday, March 19 special election. Across the district, Nelson brought in 3,572 votes (68 percent) to Burkhardt’s

1,647 votes (32 percent). The win keeps the seat in Republican hands, as it has been since Rep. Jason Rarick’s first win in 2014. The District 11B seat became vacant after Rarick resigned from the position effective Feb. 12 to be sworn in as state senator from District 11. Minnesota’s District 11B covers Pine County and half of Kanabec County.
NELSON THANKS SUPPORTERS In a speech to supporters after his victory was announced, Nelson thanked his wife Suzanna and all his supporters. “This has been incredibly humbling, the support I have gotten all thorough this process, whether it was by people personally calling, door knocking – I don’t know, you name it,” Nelson said. “I look forward to getting sworn in and
working in the capitol as your representative.” DFL STATEMENT Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party Chairman Ken Martin released the following statement in response to the special election results. “I’d like to congratulate Tim Burkhardt on his campaign for House District 11B,” Martin said. “Tim faced
long odds in a deep-red district, but he stuck to the issues important to Minnesotans and ran a race to be proud of. While I’m disappointed that Tim won’t be joining the DFL majority in the Minnesota House of Representatives, it would be a mistake for either party to read too much into the results. Special elections like these do not actually capture the mood of our state.”
