Convicted sex offender arrested after teen raped in Robinson Park

A convicted sex offender has been accused of sexually assaulting a 17-yearold girl in Pine City’s Robinson Park on May 10.

Robert Lowell Holden III, 27, of Wyoming has been charged with three felony counts of sexual assault after allegedly driving to Robinson Park, meeting a girl he had become acquainted with on

Facebook, then raping her.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Pine County Court, the Pine County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a sexual assault just after 10 p.m. on May 10.

At that time, the victim told law enforcement that the man who had assaulted her was a stranger. However, she eventually explained that Holden was someone who had become “friends” with her on Facebook, and that they had

texted each other but they had never met before that night in Robinson Park.

A deputy asked the victim why she had not told the officers this earlier. She said that she felt ashamed that this had happened to her. The deputy told her not to be ashamed – it was not her fault.

Officers found information on Holden, including the fact that he had been convicted of sexual assault on Jan. 11 in Anoka County and was currently on probation for that offense. Pine County

officers contacted the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office, who arrested Holden on May 11.

Freiheit hired as new school superintendent

The Pine City School Board has hired a new superintendent for the Pine City School District: Annette Freiheit, currently principal at Brownsdale and Hayfield Elementary Schools in southern Minnesota.

Members of the school board voted unanimously to hire Freiheit at their regular May 9 meeting.

According to her biographical information, Freiheit grew up on a farm in Wanamingo, Minnesota, and participated in basketball, track, choir and band in high school. She attended Winona State University and earned bachelor’s degrees in recreational therapy and elementary education and a master’s degree in educational leadership. Freiheit is currently a doctoral student at Hamline University, working on her Doctorate in Education.

Freiheit taught in elementary school classrooms for 11 years before becoming a principal. She has been a principal in Hayfield Community Schools since 2002.

She is married, and her three children are all graduates of Hayfield High School.

Freiheit was one of six finalists for the position of superintendent picked by the Pine City School Board.

Three of those other candidates were previously offered the position, but turned it down.

The superintendent’s contract with the Pine City School District states that Freiheit will receive $115,000 for the 2016-17 school year, with that number rising to $119,646 for the 2018-19 school year.

Freiheit will replace Pine City School Superintendent Wayne Gilman, who has served in that role for the past four years and plans to resign at the end of the current school year.

9 burglaries, 3 suspects STAFF REPORT NEWS@PINECITYMN.COM

The Pine County Sheriff’s Office reports that three men face criminal charges after a string of burglaries in northern Pine County.

According to the sheriff’s office, on May 7 a Pine County deputy responded to an address on Rolling Oaks Drive in Bruno Township to take a burglary report.

The property owner was able to provide the deputy with pictures from a hidden trail camera which showed three suspects with masks on, as well as their vehicle.

Using the photos provided, deputies were able to identify the suspect vehicle which was located at an address in Bruno.

On May 9, the Pine County Sheriff’s Office arrested three adult males suspected of the burglary: Shelby Grey Beckman, 21, of Willow River; Dalton Jorgenson-Monette, 18, of Bruno and Zachary Austin Sullivan-Seek, 18, of Askov.

According to the sheriff’s office one of the suspects, in his interview with investigators, showed officers the locations the group had burglarized over approximately the past week. Two of the locations had not yet been reported burglarized by property owners. A subsequent search warrant of the suspect vehicle revealed property taken in the burglaries. The suspects were charged in connection with a total of nine burglaries in Bruno and Park Townships.

All three suspects made an initial court appearance on May 11. All three had bail set at $10,000 and have since posted bail. The next scheduled court appearance for all three is May 24 at 1:30 p.m.

Kids do their part to save rainforests For many years, the first grade students at Pine City Elementary have conducted an Earth Day penny drive to help save the South American rainforests. This year the money collected will be used to help purchase and protect acres of rainforests, which are inhabited by spider monkeys, podocarpus trees and bromeliads. Each $50 that is contributed will protect and purchase one acre of rainforest habitat through The Nature Conservancy and the Earth’s Birthday Project. This year, students raised $414.18.

Blown transformer starts grass, pole fire on Golf Road

A blown transformer on a power pole by the Pine City Country Club on May 12 lit a grass fire in the underbrush beneath it, but also set off a more challenging chain of events for Pine City firefighters and East Central Energy (ECE) employees. After the grass fire was extinguished, firefighters looked up to see that the pole itself had started on fire. The creosote-soaked pole continued to smolder as firefighters blocked traffic on Golf Road. The single-access road would continue to be blocked for the next two hours, as firefighters could not be sure when the weakened pole would give way – and what would happen if it did. Further, ECE employees could not be certain if the wires attached to the pole were live, which made it impossible for firefighters to spray down the flames. A heavy ECE truck was eventually freed up from another assignment and deployed to the scene, by which time the top of the pole had separated completely from the bottom, both sides still burning. After the heavy ECE truck was able to interrupt the current, firefighters were finally able to spray down the pole and put the fire out – and let trapped traffic pass through at last.

Debating police body cameras A proposal that regulates the use and distribution of police body camera footage will soon be debated on the House floor.

The legislation is necessary in order to protect law enforcement from groundless lawsuits along with preserving personal privacy rights of those who come into contact with police officers.

When this proposal first came out, there were many questions and concerns from people who were leery of the collecState tion of body camera footage.

House Great ideas were Jason brought forward and changes were made, and Rarick now we are moving closer to establishing legislation that protects your right to privacy while assisting our police officers.

Some of the proposed regulations in the legislation include allowing the public to only see footage if it causes someone substantial bodily harm; giving police the power to redact portions of the video that offend “common sensibilities;” letting police review body camera video before officers file an incident report; and allowing anyone in a non-public video to release it to the public, but only after people who haven’t signed off on its release are blurred.

I look forward to supporting an idea that gives police, as well as the person or family involved in the interaction, access to body camera footage. We want to ensure that the media has a valid reason to obtain police video. We are also putting safeguards in place in order to protect citizens who are in a vulnerable situation, especially in their homes. The goal is to address concerns on both sides of this issue, which is difficult to do, but we are making solid progress.

Governor Dayton and his staff are expected to announce his first transportation offer on May 16. This comes on the heels of House Republicans offering a compromise transportation proposal based on our ten-year plan to meet the state’s road and bridge infrastructure needs with existing resources.

House Republicans have made it very clear that we are going to stand up for hardworking families this session and not raise gasoline taxes. Governor Dayton has known our position for more than a year now, so hopefully he will put together a serious plan that leaves out gas tax increases. We are more than willing to compromise in many areas, but it’s worth reiterating that a hike in the gas tax is a non-starter in the Minnesota House.

Bonding bill good for Minnesota The recently released 2016 Senate bonding bill is good news for Minnesota and includes needed investments in our part of the state. Bonding is a critical component of what we do at the state legislature.

The state owns billions of dollars’ worth of property and real estate and it is the state’s responsibility to take care of it.

The 2016 bonding bill is a $1.5 billion State investment in our Senator future, will fund several critical projects in our comTony munities, is a true Lourey economic development tool, and will create more than 40,000 jobs.

One of the major projects to benefit our area is the methane gas to power upgrades at the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District. The Combined Heat and Power Project would capture methane gas, which is a byproduct of WLSSD’s operation, and use it to create electricity. Right now, WLSSD is burning off the excess gas and in effect, is wasting its power generation potential. Only eight percent of the methane gas is currently used to generate electricity, with the upgrades that would jump to 35 percent. This upgrade will save WLSSD roughly $1 million and should lead to more stable rates for WLSSD’s

This project is one example of the impact the Senate bonding bill has on water infrastructure. Bonding funds are also being dedicated to clean up parts of the Saint Louis River and to the construction of waste water treatment plants across the state including the Big Lake Sanitary District.

These funds can be used for anything from fixing a decaying roof to patching a crumbling wall.

Asset preservation is a major focus in this year’s bonding bill and there isn’t a corner of the state it doesn’t touch. Besides higher education, a significant amount of money is being invested to preserve the correctional facilities in Willow River and Moose Lake. These are places where many members of the community work and it’s important we make sure they are safe and in buildings that will stand the test of time.

Finally, the bonding bill is investing in small communities across the state. We know that by making quality of life improvements, communities will grow and thrive. The Riverside Arena in Moose Lake is a great example of a heavily-used community center that is due for an upgrade. Moose Lake is the quintessential small town. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Support for change at Pine Community Food Shelf

Fireworks shouldn’t be priority for legislators

To the Editor: The Pine Community Food Shelf and Family Pathways held a community meeting Monday evening, May 9, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. There were 25 people in attendance.

Executive Director Rich Smith from Family Pathways gave an excellent presentation. Most of the people in attendance were not aware of all the different programs offered by Family Pathways besides clothing stores and food shelves.

There are programs for youth services, aging services, and Refuge Network (for domestic violence). I would encourage everyone to search FamilyPathways. org for additional information.

Also in attendance were some board members from New Horizon Thrift Store. They have been generous contributors to our local food shelf. Their concern was a very legitimate concern.

If they continue to donate funds to our food shelf, will these funds be used strictly for the Pine Community Food Shelf and not to the Family Pathways general fund? The answer was “absolutely.”

So for those of you who have been past contributors – as long as you designate your donations to be used for Pine Community Food Shelf, by law that money has to be used only to sustain our food shelf.

It should also be noted that Pine City will have three local people serving on the board for Family Pathways. Family Pathways has a 14-person board which serves several Minnesota counties and several Wisconsin counties.

The next step is for the Family Pathways board to vote in favor of this merger. Likewise our own food shelf will meet and take a final vote. If all goes well, this could be finalized in early June.

To the Editor: Jason Rarick has worked hard (and spent tax payer dollars) to protect our freedom to purchase the fireworks we choose.

Fireworks? Thanks, but no thanks Mr. Rarick: I think there are other issues your constituents might care more about.

We get legal access to bottle rockets, but 13.8 percent of Kanabec and 17.5 percent of Pine’s citizens live in poverty compared to the state’s 11.5 percent.

Firecrackers will be available without driving to Wisconsin, but 46 percent of Kanabec and 50 percent of Pine’s children receive free or reduced price lunch.

Our backyard 4th of July celebrations will have aerial fireworks but only 12.6 percent of Pine and 13.4 percent of Kanabec residents have a bachelor’s degree or higher compared to the state average of 33.2 percent.

Rarick is proud to author a Freedom Act for fireworks bill when only 38.9 percent of Kanabec and 54.2 percent of Pine have broadband access that is comparable to the state’s 89.9 percent.

I like a good fireworks show as much as the next person, but I’ll be voting this fall for a representative who will focus on the important issues for my district.

I’ll be voting for Tom Jones.

Vote for third-party candidates this election To the Editor: There has never been a moment in American politics when the landscape felt so ripe for an independent presidential candidate to emerge.

The majority of Minnesota Democrat and Republican Primary voters indicated they were not comfortable with

either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump running the country, as Democrat Bernie Sanders and Republican Marco Rubio won our state.

Ms. Clinton could almost pass as a Republican with her hesitancy to raise the minimum wage and her pro-intervention record. Mr. Trump seems to have as many progressive ideas as conservative ones. Neither of them seems to mind the prospects of an ever expanding government.

The reality of this upcoming election period is that the middle class feel they have been lied to and continuously let down, whether a Democrat or Republican is in office. The Democratic Party seems to be flirting with the idea of traveling down a sketchy road of socialism, while the Republican Party appears to be suffering a major identity crisis.

If you feel unrest in November voting for one of the two mainstream candidates, consider voting for a third party candidate.

Third parties to consider are the Green Party, which focuses on classical liberal concepts including environmentalism, social justice, and true participatory democracy. On the other end of the spectrum, the Libertarian Party gives a fresh take on conservatism with a platform advocating limited government, civil liberties, and a free market society.

Don’t be concerned that your vote will go to waste by voting for a third party candidate. The first ever third party president got into the White House with only 38 percent of the vote, and that president was Abraham Lincoln. He was a Republican, but this was before the party was a part of the current oligarchy.

Through the free voting process, you have the chance to help do away with the status quo and possibly change the political structure of this country. And that may be what this country needs to move forward.

Is it legal to pull up to your mailQ: box on the shoulder to get your mail? The road has a shoulder, but

traffic still has to move over to center line. It looks very unsafe. Also, while driving home the other night, a car was turning left into a driveway. I was the third car behind the turning car. I slowed and moved a little onto the shoulder. The two cars in front of me passed on the right of the turning car. The truck that was behind me could not pass me and was very unhappy. Was I in the right to block the shoulder of the road?

You can’t lawfully drive over A: the center line (the wrong direction) for any reason except to make

a safe and legal pass, but we see this being done on hills and in no-passing zones.

For the passing on the right part of your question, you can be over to the right of your lane, but if you are stopped and are parked on or over the white fog line (marking the shoulder), then you could be liable if in a crash.

Worse yet, you could get hit and injured or killed (along with someone else). We advise not to do that. Passing on the right is against the law unless there is a lane provided—like a bypass lane—or if you are driving on a multi-lane highway. A driver can never use the shoulder of a road (paved or unpaved) or a turn lane for passing on the right. It is unsafe, and not legal, so we are asking drivers not to do that.

Haedt builds memorial to honor Vietnam vets 10 Years Ago, 2006 The Pine County commissioners recently got a close-up view of the progress being made on the new courthouse which is under construction in Pine City. The $28.7 million project remains well within budget according to county coordinator John Stieben, who led the tour on Tuesday afternoon.

Lacey Pixley, Miss Pine City 20042005, will compete in the Queen of the Lakes scholarship program at the Minneapolis Aquatennial, “The Ten Best Days of Summer,” in July. Her sponsor will be the Pine City Chamber of Commerce.

Pine City’s old wagon bridge over the Snake River – seen here from the viewpoint of the railroad bridge – was just east of the railroad bridge and stood near the mouth of the river as it flowed into Cross Lake, crossing the river at Second Street. According to local historian Jim Foster, the wagon bridge was built in the 1890s and gone by the 1930s, and Foster remembers seeing the pilings from the bridge in the river. Local farmers in the early 1900s would take animals from town over the bridge to Woodpecker Ridge for the day to graze and return them at night.

25 Years Ago, 1991 On the south side of the old railroad depot in downtown Pine City, a granite marker stands in memory of all veterans who fought in the Vietnam war. It is a memorial to those who were killed and those who are still missing. Bob Haedt, who owns the building, is a Vietnam veteran. He is responsible for the memorial and the planting and care of the shrubs and the flowers that surround it.

He marches and carries the MIA flag in local parades for those who died in Vietnam and to remind the public that there are 42 servicemen missing from Minnesota alone.

Pine City Administrator Robert Voss will return home June 7 after serving a 180 day tour of duty with the U. S. Army during the Persian Gulf war. Voss was stationed at Fort Dix, N. J., where he worked with a postal unit.

Bev Ceaglske taught herself how to do ceramics. Her research into ceramic glazes for a term paper uncovered that lead in glazes has been a documented problem for 20 years, and she began a scientific study of the glazes she uses in her craft. She is now a certified national ceramic judge and attends shows all

E. J. Prochaska has had the old tin torn off the store and the building will be stuccoed. This will greatly improve the appearance of the building and will add to the looks of Main Street.

The domestic science class at the high school gave a dinner for the mothers last Wednesday evening. The class did the cooking, the mothers did the eating and to date, no casualties have been reported.

Frank Prihoda received a car of lumber and will start building his new home on his place east of town (Beroun). The lumber came already sawed the right length.

Now’s the time to transplant trees, shrubs

Spring is the time to transplant trees, shrubs and most perennials.

When purchasing plants it is important to read the label. These labels will tell you what zone the plant is hardy in. We are zone 3. The label will tell you other characteristics of the plant including height, width and color of leaves in different seasons for trees. It will also tell the bloom time and color for shrubs and perennials.

The overall height and width at maturity should be the determining factor in placement of new trees and shrubs. The most common mistake made is planting too close to buildings or other shrubs and trees.

The planting basics include: make the hole two and one-half times wider than the root ball, but not deeper; provide adequate water and use soil with nutrients. This applies whether you are planting trees, shrubs or perennials.

Call at least two working days before you intend to dig. Use stakes or spray paint to mark the areas or meet the locaters to tell them where you want to dig. All of the utilities will be flagged to tell you which ones to contact on your property.

Prepare the soil: It is important to understand that most growth occurs in the top foot of the soil so this is where adding peat moss, well rotted manure and other soil amendments is useful. Mixing these with your existing soil is important so you don’t create a clay pot that the roots have a difficult time penetrating. The hole should be at least twice as wide, but not deeper than the root ball.

Prepare the roots: It is important to make sure the plant is not root bound.

This is when the roots are visible on the outside of the ball and wrap around it. Make sure to loosen or cut the roots and make four vertical grooves around the root ball. Prune off encircling roots.

Plant at the right depth: It is important to look at the base of the new tree and make sure that the top of the soil is where the root flares out.

This is where the trunk spreads out and transitions into roots. The flare should be at or an inch above ground

level. The soil should slope down and away from the plant.

Plant and water: After the hole is dug and the plant is positioned begin adding soil. I like to fill the hole about half full with soil and then add water.

This will ensure that there are no air pockets around the roots. Then add soil to fill the hole. Smooth out and gently water it again. It is important to water regularly. If it does not rain, water new trees daily for the first two weeks, every other day for two months and then weekly until established. Trees and shrubs like an inch of water a week. Water trees until freeze up.

Mulch under trees: Put a 2-4 inch layer of mulch up to, but not touching the trunk bark. Do not go over four inches or it can interfere with oxygen reaching the roots. Remove and compost old faded mulch before adding new.

Holden told the investigator that he knew he had been arrested for “last night,” and said he knew the victim was a minor.

As part of the Anoka probation, Holden was barred from having unsupervised contact with female adolescents under the age of 18.

He was also supposed to enter a sex offender treatment program.

Holden told the investigator there never was any mention of sex between himself and the victim in their text or Facebook communication. Holden said he knew she likely expected to only hang out, not have sex. Holden stated that he wanted to have sex with her when he arrived at the park.

Holden said that at the park they talked, then he tried to get the victim to get into his car. She refused. He said he then started to remove her clothes even though she said “no.”

He said the victim was pushing him off and telling him to stop but he “just kept going.”

He then grabbed the victim, pulled her down to the ground and forced himself on her. According to the criminal complaint, Holden admitted that it was not consensual sex.

Unconditional bail for Holden has been set at $400,000, and conditional bail set at $150,000.

Holden was appointed a public defender.

He currently remains in Pine County Jail.

The next hearing is May 26 at 9 a.m.

True Team proves tough, highlights found in Hinckley

Pine City’s track season continued with two more meets this past week. The squad traveled to the True Team Meet in Cloquet on Tuesday, May 10 where both the boys and the girls finished in the middle of the pack in a tough field. To finish the week, the Dragons ran in the Hinckley Invite on Thursday, May 12 and both teams fared very well.

At the Cloquet meet, the Dragons boys finished ninth out of 12 teams competing, while the girls took eighth out of 13.

“In this meet,” explained head coach Jared Clementson, “we faced a lot of heavy competition as most of the competing schools are from the larger Class AA. The weather did not help as it was rainy, cold and windy throughout the meet.”

For the boys, highlights included the performance of Brandon Haskovec, who was

the team’s highest point-getter with 51.5 points. He tied for third in the high jump (5’ 8”), and also ran in the 4x200m relay (1:38.64) with Dennis Skalicky, Adam Seals and Aaron Pulkrabek, as the team took sixth. Skalicky placed fourth in the 400m dash (53.64). Seals placed fifth in the long jump (19’ 1”) and ninth in the triple jump (36’ 5”). Adam Archambault placed sixth in the pole vault (11’ 6”), Eli Grubbs placed seventh in the 1600m (4:44.96) and eighth in the 3200m (10:45.22), Weston Berens placed eighth in the 110m hurdles (18.18) and Tommy Ryan placed ninth in the 3200m (10:49.95).

On the girls side, Elsie Lundquist was the Dragons’ top scorer with 97 as she managed to win two events including the 100m hurdles (16.81) and the high jump (5’ 0”). Lundquist also went on to take fourth in the triple jump (32’ 5”) and fifth in the long jump (14’ 10.5”). Additional standout performanc-

es came in the relays as the girls placed third in the 4x800m relay (10:21.24) with a team consisting of Makayla Butenhoff, Grace Langmade, Allison Gusk and Alaina Steele. The Dragons 4x400m relay (4:28.30) of Aaleaha Thieman, Alexis Thieman, Alexis Pankonin and Steele took sixth. Steele placed fifth in the 800m (2:31.25) and Pankonin placed ninth in the shot put (32’ 5”).

Two days later the Dragons mixed things up for the Hinckley Invite, and ended up winning on both the boys and girls sides. The Dragons took a lot of events on the afternoon.

“We did not have all of our kids competing in this meet and we let them pick most of their events,” said Clementson.

“We did this to change things up and to give kids a needed break before the Great River Conference Meet.”

took third, losing to Grantsburg and Rush City.

Pankonin was the girls’ top point getter with 21 points. Pankonin was second in the 200m dash (27.9) and was fourth in shot put (30’ 1.5”) and discus (86’ 8.5”). She also ran as part of the winning 4x200m relay team along with Aaleaha Thieman, Lundquist and Steele.

Steele broke her second school record of the season and fourth overall when she ran the 3200m for the very first time. Steele went through the first mile in 5:55 and ended up breaking the school record by 14 seconds as she ran a great time of 12:13.6. The former record was 12:27.58 set by Abby Cummins in 2013.

Other highlights included the performance of Natalie Cahill, who was second in the 300m hurdles (53.5), Butenhoff was second in the 1600m (5:50.6) and Isabelle Sanders tied for third in the high jump (4’ 4).

The boys’ top point-getter was Sully Schmidt with 16 points. Schmidt won the triple jump (36’ 7”) and was fourth in the high jump (5’ 8”). Grubbs won the 800m by 7.5 seconds in a personal best time of 2:05.9.

The Dragons boys won the 4x400m relay (3:42.2) with a team of Riley Palmer, Austin Eckert, Grubbs and Ryan, and the group recorded the Dragons’ fastest time of the season in the event.

Other highlights included Berens’ second place finish in the 110m hurdles (18.4), and Seals taking second in the high jump (6’ 0”) and fourth in the 200m dash (24.6). Additionally, Remington Steele took third in the 1600m (5:05.7).

Next up for the Dragons was the Great River Conference meet on Tuesday, May 17. The squad will then go to Hinckley for the Conference Relay meet on Thursday, May 19.

At third singles, Andrew Clementson earned a win (6-4, 6-4), while Zach Broz was dominant at fourth singles, losing just a single game (6-0, 6-1). The Dragons swept doubles play when Luke Steele and Jon Blake won at first doubles (6-2, 6-2), Jared Kotek and Jonah Bergstrom won at second doubles (6-1, 6-0), and Beau Steele and Dusty Bergstrom won at third doubles (6-0, 6-2).

Played at home on Monday, May 9, things couldn’t have gone much better for Pine City here. The Dragons dominated play and didn’t drop a set to the Vikings.

“During the day we were not positive we were going to get this match in with iffy weather hanging around,” recalled head coach Rick Engelstad. “But we were fortunate that the skies did not open up and we got the match in.”

The following day, it was more of the same for the Dragons with another great performance. Pine City moved its regular season mark to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in the Granite Ridge.

“Dragons played very well at all spots to come out with a convincing win,” said Engelstad. “You could see the mind of the boys; they came out ready to play.”

After the home courts dried out from the wet weather earlier in the day, the Dragons proceeded to take care of business. Just as the day before, Pine City didn’t drop a single set.

At first singles it was Berube with a solid win (6-1, 6-0), followed by another victory at second singles for Blake (6-1, 6-1). At third singles Clementson never dropped a game (6-0, 6-0) and Parker Sell was a winner at fourth singles (61, 6-1). In first doubles play, Steele and Brown took care of business (6-1, 6-1) while Kotek and Bergstrom were winners too (6-0, 7-5) at second doubles. Broz and Bergstrom were winners again at third doubles (6-1, 6-0).

Granite Ridge Conference Tournament On Saturday, May 14, the Dragons didn’t fare quite as well when they competed in the Granite Ridge Conference Tournament, which was held in Becker and is individual in nature. Pine City

had one second place finish with an additional three third place finishes.

The highlight of the day was the play of Kotek and Jonah Bergstrom who earned a second place finish at second doubles, going 2-1 on the day. Clementson was the highest placing singles player, earning third at third singles. Two more third place finishes came at first doubles (Steele and Brown) and third doubles (Broz and Dusty Bergstrom).

“Dragons competed well and it was another opportunity to prepare for the postseason,” said Engelstad. “Tough day to play tennis, cold and windy out.

Most people brought their winter jackets out for the day. Gloves and stocking hats were the norm.”

Pine City will hope for better weather as they move into the postseason. The first round of Section 6A play is slated to begin on Thursday, May 19.

Dragons baseball adds a win over Rush City

Adding another win to its season total this past week, the Pine City Dragons baseball team now stands at 3-11. The Dragons beat Rush City but also showed signs of improvement in two other losses.

“We continue to play better and better as the season goes on,” said head coach Ted Hasz.

“We competed very well this week and continue to make strides. Our improvement over the last few weeks has been due to focused efforts and working on a bunch of little things that have added up to much improved play.”

Two Harbors 11, Pine City 6 Giving up the big inning has

been an issue for the Dragons this year, and it happened again on Monday, May 9 with the Agates plated seven in the second inning against Pine City. The Dragons were forced to play catch-up for the rest of the game but never got all the way back.

Isaiah Gonyea started on the mound and was relieved

by Austin Hansmann in the second inning, who came in and pitched well. Offensively, the Dragons collected 12 hits including three extra base hits. Kyle Peters had continued to impress at the plate with three hits, and Jake Lunceford showed himself well with a pair of doubles. Jake Rademacher had two hits, while Marcus Scarbrough, Colby Pavelka, Gonyea, Brendan Westbrook

and Nick Hansmann all had one hit apiece.

Pine City 12, Rush City 9 Pine City picked up a big section and conference victory with great intensity and enthusiasm.

“It was a very fun atmosphere in Rush City,” Hasz said of the game played on Tuesday, May 10. “The kids battled all game and picked up a nice win.”

Although Rush City had a big inning, scoring seven runs in the first, the Dragons were able to answer with a big inning of their own by scoring seven runs in the top of the third to take a lead that they would not give up.

back on the mound, pitched four strong innings of relief, giving up only three hits, no walks and no earned runs to pick up the victory.

The Dragons racked up 13 hits in the game. Scarbrough was 3-for-3 with three doubles and three RBIs. Rademacher, Lunceford and Drew Steele had two hits apiece. Peters, Pavelka, Gonyea, and Austin Hansmann each had hits in the win.

Crosby Ironton 4, Pine City 3 The Dragons lost a heartbreaker in Crosby on Thursday, May 12. Pine City had a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh only to have a series of odd plays end up allowing the Rangers to score two runs and steal the win.

pitching performance by Nick Hansmann as he gave up three earned runs on five hits. The Dragons could only muster four hits off of the Rangers’ top pitcher, two of which came from Scarbrough. One of the senior Scarbrough’s hits was a very long homer over the center field fence, about 400 feet away from home plate. Rademacher and Lunceford had the other two hits for the Dragons.

“We are very encouraged by the progress that we are making,” said Hasz. “We are playing our best baseball of the season. With playoffs coming up, it is a good time to be playing good baseball.”

The Dragons still have six more regular season games on their schedule and look to continue the upward swing.

Despite a less than desirable week of weather, the Pine City Dragons golf team had one of their busiest weeks of the spring season. The boys team competed at Purple Hawk on Monday, both boys and girls were at Fiddlestix on Tuesday, and the girls played again in a scramble in Mora on Wednesday.

“It was a busier week this week, and along with the extra meets came less than perfect weather,” said head coach Anna Potvin. “On Tuesday, all of the scores were a little higher than normal due to wet and cold conditions. Even with these challenges, we did pretty well.”

Justin Gamec played well on Monday, May 9, shooting a team-low score of 90 at Purple Hawk in Cambridge. Alex Wimmer also had a good day in posting a 97, the first time he had been under 100. Sam Chryst had a personal best score of 106 while Josh Doenz finished just a shot behind Chryst when he carded a 107.

On Tuesday, both the boys and the girls traveled to Isle to compete at Fiddlestix, where the conditions were less than favorable. The course had planned to mow greens prior to the play on Tuesday, but with the rain, this was not possible. As a result, the conditions were challenging, but both the boys and girls still came out with second place finishes as a team.

On the boys side, Ryan Gamec-Bromberg continues to sit atop the confer-

ence standings. He posted the second best score of the day with an 80. Justin Gamec shot a 90, Luke Murphy a 92 and Doenz a 101. Wimmer shot a 103 and Joseph Root shot a 108.

On the girls side, Marie Larson’s 107 paced the Dragons, who lost by 10 strokes to Moose Lake-Willow River.

Lindsay Miller shot a personal best 110, the same score as teammate Holly Emslander. Anna Miller had 113, Kristina Knutson had 116, and Emmy Kuzel a 124.

On Wednesday, playing in a scramble in Mora, Pine City’s pairing of Anna Miller/Lindsay Miller shot a 92. Knutson teamed with Ellee Foster to card a 93. Taylor Kline and Danielle Hauge scored a 113, and the team combined for a score of 185. The winning team in the scramble was Rogers with 150.

“On Wednesday, again, it was cold and wet, but the girls did well despite the conditions,” noted Potvin.

Pine City will finish conference play on Thursday, May 19 at Cuyuna Rolling Hills in Deerwood (Aitkin’s home course). Conference Champions and All-Conference selections will happen then.

In addition to the conference meet on Thursday, the girls were headed to the Lakes Course at Ruttger’s Bay Lake Lodge on Wednesday, May 18 for an event featuring some of the top golfers in the state. The boys will play at Minnesota National in McGregor on Friday, May 20 and see similarly tough competition.

Mars blazes like a fiery ruby in the month of May

On the 9th of May we were treated to the spectacle of a small black dot crawling across the sun’s face. This was a rare transit of Mercury, when the little planet zips between Earth and the sun.

Mercury’s transit came on the heels of its April visit to the evening sky, when it had just emerged from behind the sun.

Not to be outdone, Mars reaches the climax of its 2016 appearance in the early morning of the 22nd, when Earth laps the red planet in the orbital race and it shines opposite the sun in the sky.

At opposition, as it is called, Mars will be a mere 47.4 million miles away, blazing like a fiery ruby just beyond the claws of Scorpius. It ris-

es at sunset and stays up all night, moving from southeast to southwest and reaching its highest point in the sky around 1 a.m.

Close as it comes at opposition, Mars passes approximately 600,000 miles closer on the 30th. This happens because lapping a planet isn’t the same as one runner lapping another.

The orbits of Mars and Earth aren’t perfect circles, nor are they on quite the same plane.

Consequently, opposition and closest approach don’t coincide; the interval between them ranges from a mere 10 minutes to as much as 8.5 days.

Mars’s next opposition will be in July 2018.

Just below Mars is Antares, the gigantic red star at the scorpion’s heart. Its name means “rival of Mars,” but this

month it’s clearly outclassed.

Also traveling with Scorpius is Saturn, a bright light east of Mars. Saturn is coming up on its own opposition the first week in June, and if you have a small telescope, its rings are now very favorably tilted.

If you’re outside after Mars is well up in the east but before about 1:30 a.m., you’ll see Jupiter outshining everything else in the west and you can compare the bright red planet to the perennially brilliant golden one.

One cautionary note: May’s full moon shines the night of the 21st-22nd, right above Mars and Saturn. You may want to view the planets 90 minutes before dawn a few days prior, or in the evening a few days afterward.

Jay K. Jahnz

found his soulmate, Dawn. He treasured her, adored her and showed her a love that only happens once in a lifetime. Jay always loved so deeply, and so passionately, he always found the good in every situation.

The world through his eyes was always a bright one.

Jay has left us all with cherished memories, reasons to laugh, and a love that will never die. May we never forget him but instead remember all the great acts and good times. Jay will live on forever because of the memories he made for us all.

Jay is survived by Dawn Sorgdrager; his sons: Jayson (Shannon) Jahnz of Pine City, Jed (Kari) Jahnz of Pine City, Branden (Sama) Berchem of Vadnais Heights; daughter Brianna (Nick) Luger of Hugo; six grandchildren; brothers: Brent (Kathy) Jahnz and Scott (Chris) Jahnz; sister: Julie (Gary) Gahler, all of Pine City; extended family: Paul Sorgdrager of Isanti, Megan Sorgdrager of Pennsylvania, many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Harley Jahnz and Shirley Jahnz.

Reverend Fred Hanson officiated services for Jay on Friday, May 13, 2016 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Pine City.

Jay Jahnz passed away as the result of an airplane accident Sunday, May 8, 2016 in Rush City at the age of 58.

Jay Kevin Jahnz was born on March 8, 1958 to Harley and Shirley (Johnson) Jahnz in Glenco, Minnesota.

Jay was a well-known man, he was a well-loved man. It’s no secret that Jay touched the lives of every single person he met.

Jay was an unsung hero. It all started in 1958, on the 8th day of March he blessed his parents Harley and Shirley with his presence. He was a treasure to his two older brothers and a terror to his little sister. Although we can’t be sure where Jay took his first steps, or the first words that he mumbled, but we can be sure that we knew Jay’s first love … fishing (of course). In 1976, a freshly turned 18-year-old Jay graduated from Pine City High School. The following year of 1977 presented itself to be a busy one for the young Jay. He began his career in the gas industry at Peoples Natural Gas Company; he also proved his nobility when he joined the Pine City Fire Department. The following year was a bit more challenging as Jay entered fatherhood in January of 1978. Years came and went, but the smile remained on his face always. He showed us his dedication in the year of 1997 when he opened up his empire J&K Services. While running his widely known and highly respected business, Jay showed us his ability to transition in 2004 when he became a grandfather. After achieving multiple ranks in the Fire Department, Jay retired as a Chief after 31 years of service in 2008.

Jay had a heart of gold, and a mouth that moved faster than anything. It was a common sight to see Jay with a Windsor 7 in one hand, and a fishing pole in the other. I think we all can agree Jay was a joker; it’s safe to say if he didn’t pick on you, he probably didn’t like you. If Jay wasn’t out casting in his boat it’s because he was out riding his beloved Goldwing. He had many passions, countless hobbies, but his favorite pastime was socializing with his family and friends. His life became complete in the year 2012 when he finally

Nancy L. Anderson Nancy Lee Anderson, formerly of Pine City, passed away Monday, May 9 at her home in Alexandria.

Nancy was born in 1942 in Brainerd. She was the second of four children in a family who were very involved in the Church of the Nazarene. She began teaching Sunday School in her high school years and went on to receive an education degree from Northwest Nazarene College. Nancy began her teaching career in the Minneapolis public schools, during which

time she met Lauren through friends. They were married and moved to the farm near Pine City where Nancy soon acclimated to country life. Later on, she resumed her career at the Pine City Cooperative Nursery School, where she taught for 16 years.

Nancy was active in her church, taking on many roles. She was involved in 4-H as an adult leader, and supported local performing arts with her sewing and crafts. Nancy and Lauren moved to Alexandria in 2006. She described her hobbies as flying kites, reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, and spending time with family and friends.

Wherever she was, Nancy shared her deep faith through her hospitality and inviting personality.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Lyle and Ellen (Burkart) Davis, and brother Larry Davis.

Nancy is survived by her loving husband Lauren; sister, Janice Lee of Brainerd; brother Kelly Davis of Boise, Idaho; children Sarah (Ken) Krantz of Alexandria; Matt (Crystal) Anderson of Beatrice, Nebraska; Dan (Kristin) Anderson of Eagan; six grandchildren: Jeffrey and Loren Krantz, Grace and Myrah Anderson, Thomas and TJ Anderson; aunts Pat Jewell and Ruth Ringquist; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Alexandria Covenant Church with Rev. Rollie Mossberg and Rev. Kelly Davis officiating. Music was provided

by Nancy Holm, Ken Krantz, Sam Camos and Dean Madison. Burial was at Geneva Cemetery, Alexandria.

Pallbearers were Matt Nord, Thomas Lindstrom, Ken Krantz, Dillon Lindstrom, Lane Lindstrom and Bruce Jasperson. Honorary pallbearers were Jeffrey and Loren Krantz, Grace and Myrah Anderson, Thomas and TJ Anderson and Chelsey Trujillo.

SCHOOL BOARD MEETING MINUTES INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT #578 PINE CITY, MINNESOTA 55063 Monday, April 11, 2016 @ 6:30 P.M. Pine City District Office Board Room “Creating Our Future One Student at A Time” The regular meeting of the Board of Education of Independent School District No. 578, Pine City, Minnesota, was held at the Pine City District Office Board Room on Monday, April 11, 2016 for the purpose of conducting regular board business.

Chairman Peterson called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.

Upon Roll Call, the following members were present: Steve Odegard, Wally Connaker, Wendy Leibel, Dan Peterson, Tim Geisler, Candice Ames.

Absent: Alicia Ascheman Also present was Superintendent Wayne Gilman.

Motion by Odegard second by Ames and carried unanimously to approve the agenda with the addition of an approval for an out of state workshop.

Positive Happenings/Presentations/Open Forum: Advisors Dihanna Fedder & Terrie Schoeberl along with students Tiffany Schmidt, David Briski, Bailey Havel & Molly Cornelius updated the board on the recent Senior Trip.

Winter Coaches summarized and gave highlights of their season Tom Kloeckl talked about a possible concrete addition to the ALC entrance.

Motion by Geisler second by Ames and carried unanimously to approve the consent agenda. (a) Approve the March 14, 2016 regular meeting and the March 21, 22, 28 & April 1 special meeting notes. Member Odegard introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption, which motion was seconded by Member Connaker: RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE ISSUANCE, AWARDING THE SALE, PRESCRIBING THE FORM AND DETAILS AND PROVIDING FOR THE PAYMENT OF $1,385,000 GENERAL OBLIGATION FACILITIES MAINTENANCE BONDS, SERIES 2016B Upon vote being taken thereon, the following voted in favor thereof: Odegard, Connaker, Leibel, Peterson, Geisler, Ames. and the following voted against the same: None whereupon the resolution was declared duly passed and adopted.

Motion by Leibel second by Odegard and carried unanimously to approve the 2016-17 Senior Class Trip.

Motion by Geisler second by Ames and carried unanimously to accept the grant from the Initiative Foundation to be used for Early Childhood Screening.

Motion by Connaker second by Ames and carried unanimously to approve submission of the application to Greater Pine Area Endowment for Community Education (Pearl Harbor Event). The Board accepts fiduciary and reporting responsibility for this grant.

Motion by Geisler second by Leibel and carried unanimously to allow paid advertisements in the Community Education/Early Childhood Education Brochures.

Member Odegard introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption: RESOLUTION RELATING TO THE TERMINATION AND NONRENEWAL OF THE TEACHING CONTRACT OF JAMESON JOHNSON, A PROBATIONARY TEACHER WHEREAS, Jameson Johnson is a probationary teacher in Independent

School District #578.

BE IT RESOLVED, by the School Board of Independent School District No. 578 that pursuant to Minnesota Statutes 120A.40, Subdivision 5, that the teaching contract of Jameson Johnson, a probationary teacher in Independent School District No. 578, is hereby terminated at the close of the current 2015-16 school year.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that written notice be sent to said teacher regarding termination and non-renewal of his contract as provided by law and that said notice shall be in substantially the following form: NOTICE OF TERMINATION AND NON-RENEWAL Mr. Jameson Johnson Pine City, MN 55063 Dear Mr. Johnson: You are hereby notified that at a regular meeting of the School Board of Independent School District No.578 held on April 11, 2016, a resolution was adopted by a majority roll call vote to terminate your contract effective at the end of the current school year and not to renew your contract for the 2016 - 2017 school year. Avonne was born on Oct. 12, 1931 to Helmer and Alma Bakken. She was raised on a farm in Erskine, Minnesota and graduated from Erskine High School and Moorhead State Teachers College.

Avonne married her high school sweetheart, Gordon, on July 3, 1952. In their 63 years of married life they resided in many places: Bamberg, Germany; Fargo, North Dakota; Park Rapids, Minnesota; Pine City; Tyler, Texas; Savana, Illinois; Reno, Nevada; and Mesa, Arizona. Avonne considered each of their moves an adventure.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and aunt who enjoyed visiting and always put people first. Avonne walked strongly in her faith and carried that on to her family. She enjoyed baking, especially making buns, fudge and Christmas cookies.

Avonne will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Gordon; daughters, Heidi Stennes and Rebecca (Richard) Schlough; son, Scott (Cynthia) Stennes ; sisters, VerDell (El Ray)Fertig and Phyllis (Galen) Sele; four granddaughters, Madalyn (fiancé Tyler Skarolid) and Helen Stennes, Chloe and Julia Schlough; grandson, Parker Stennes; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Helmer and Alma Bakken and her brother, Harley Bakken (Marcene).

S She married Edward L Lee Houdek in the s spring of 1983. In 1996, t they moved to Pine City, Jeanne’s most favorite place in the world.

Jeanne loved the outdoors. Her hobbies and passions were gardening, feeding and watching the birds, taking care of her dogs and spending time with her family. She worked at the Pine City branch of U.S. Bank for seven years, where she made many close friends.

During her lifetime, Jeanne was one of the most loving, caring and thoughtful people to grace this world. She loved spending quiet days by the lake with her sweetheart Ed, and playing with her beloved dog Willow.

She will be deeply missed by all and will remain in our hearts forever.

Jeanne is survived by her husband Edward Houdek; her children, Jaime Kordonowy of Carver and Jeff (Caroline) Houdek of Eden Prairie; grand-

children: Anna, Lydia, John and Ben; and her father James Rislund; siblings: Mike (Paulette) Rislund, Miles Rislund, Cyndi Lu (Kenley) Merrill, Sherri Rislund; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, friends; and her companion and beloved dog Willow.

Wayne L. McKee Wayne McKee of M Moose Lake passed a away at Sophie’s M Manor of Pine City o Tuesday, April on 2 2016 at the age of 26, 7 76.

Wayne LeRoy M McKee was born on F Feb. 6, 1940 to Vernon and Mayme (Forshee) McKee in Moose Lake.

Wayne was a family farm boy helping his parents on their farm. He graduated from Moose Lake High School in 1960 and enlisted in the Air Force from 1960-1964 when he was honorably discharged. While Wayne was in the Air Force he met and married Reba Hill. They had two sons, Richard and Rodney, and then divorced in 1977.

Wayne is survived by his sons Richard “Rick” McKee and Rodney McKee, both of Pine City; grandchildren: Chadric, Timothy, Cody, Emily, Rachel and Dylan McKee; siblings Dale McKee of Washington, Bill (Louise) McKee of Oak Lake, Jack McKee, Marion (Bob) Sadler of Moose Lake, Jerry (Loreen) McKee and Danny (Cricket) McKee, all of Colorado.

Master Gardeners hold plant sale

The music department at Pine City is proud to present the Senior High Choir Pops Concert on Thursday, May 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Pine City Auditorium.

All are welcome to this free concert.

The concert begins with four boys who received a superior rating for their performance of their song “Star of the County Down.” Mixed Choir will perform next with tunes from the Beatles, and the movies “Rent” and “Shrek.”

Pine City Singers will be performing a fun rendition of the classic high school movie, “High School Musical,” and the boys of Concert Choir will perform a medley of Johnny Cash tunes.

Treble Choir continues with tunes from Cyndi Lauper, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry. Several solos and duets will be featured at the concert including Hailey Hippen singing the Sara Bareilles tune “She Used to Be Mine” and Allie Gosen performing Kelly Clarkson’s “Piece by Piece.” Joe Ascheman and Adelle Maas will sing together on “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men. The concert will finish with Concert Choir doing songs from Queen, Adele, The Eagles and Billy Joel, with several soloists including Sam Carr, Hailey Hippen, David Briski, Derek Pearson, Victoria Miles, Tiffany Schmidt and Angela DeGray. The concert will finish with all students performing together the One Republic hit “I Lived.”

Grant supports PTCC student emergency fund Pine Technical & Community College students can apply for small grants to help cover expenses just beyond their means, which allows them to quickly return focus to their academic pursuits after an emergency.

“Many of our students face unexpected expenses that can often result in them having to put their education, and ultimately their opportunities for a better future, on hold,” said Dean of Student Affairs Paula Hoffman. “The emergency grant helps our students keep their education on track in dire circumstances. In the event they don’t qualify for the grant, we’re still able to connect the student to community resources they would not have known about if they hadn’t come in to discuss the grant.”

The student emergency grant program at PTCC is made possible by a $39,700 Dash emergency grant from Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation. To date, more than $6,100 has been awarded to 13 students since the program began in March.

One student faced an unexpected medical expense that put her at risk of having her electricity disconnected. “I had to choose between electric or a medical expense. With the help I was able to continue my journey at Pine Technical and Community College without the added stress that came with a pending doom of disconnection of my electric.”

Great Lakes will provide a maximum of $6,700 to PTCC during the pilot period of the grant. With funds from Great Lakes and matching funds from the PTCC Foundation, $20,000 will be available in each of years one and two of the grant.

Farmers sign up for EQIP Agricultural producers looking to solve natural resource problems on their farms will want to sign up early for United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) funding. Cathee Pullman, USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) State Conservationist in Minnesota, announced that farmers interested in the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) need to apply by Aug. 19 for funding in 2017.

EQIP is a voluntary program that provides financial and technical assistance

to agricultural producers. These contracts provide financial assistance to help plan and implement conservation practices that address natural resource concerns and for opportunities to improve soil, water, plant, animal, air, and related resources on agricultural land and non-industrial private forestland.

EQIP is intended as one tool for landowners who want to apply conservation practices on the ground. By working with the local NRCS offices, farmers can apply for NRCS programs which work best for their land.

Applications for EQIP are accepted on a continuous basis, however, NRCS establishes application acceptance or submission deadline dates for evaluation and ranking of eligible applications.

Contracts will be awarded to producers with the highest rankings until funds are exhausted.

Best friends hit the water for opener

Though fishing opener got off to a chilly start on the morning of Saturday, May 14, these two were more than ready to head off down the Snake River to find out where the walleye were biting. DNR Conservation officer Bret Grundmeier, working out of Hinckley, reported that the wind and flurries kept most lakes in the area fairly quiet. However, Grundmeier said, one angler that did brave the cold weather on fishing opener morning was unable to produce a fishing license, and said he had left his license at home on the counter. Later that morning, while buying coffee, Grundmeier saw the same individual at the counter buying a fishing license.

The unlicensed angler told Grundmeier, “Today is just not working out like I had hoped.”
