Hobby, passion grow into business: Boondoggle Winery BY MIKE GAINOR EDITOR@PINECITYMN.COM

A “boondoggle” is defined as a project that results in a waste of time and money. But while time and money have certainly been invested to create Pine City’s Boondoggle Winery, it hasn’t been wasted – it’s generating both business and fun for its owners. Steve Odegard, who

Lives saved in water rescue on Pokegama Lake BY MIKE GAINOR EDITOR@PINECITYMN.COM

As the first winter storm of the season broke over Pine City on Nov. 18, Pine County deputies and Pine City firefighters geared up to try to rescue three hunters and their dog who were clinging to a capsized boat on Pokegama Lake. At 12:20 p.m. on Friday, the Pine County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a boat sinking at the

south end of Pokegama Lake. Deputies, along with personnel from the Pine City Fire Department, Pine EMS and Essentia Ambulance were dispatched to the scene. The first arriving deputy was able to see a capsized boat and three people as well as the dog in the water. One of the hunters was able to call 911 from his cell phone as they clung to the boat in the icy water waiting for help to arrive. The onset of high winds at the front of the

winter storm had created whitecaps which slammed across the lake and shore from north to south, and the hunters had capsized as they were heading into shore. With a rescue boat from the Pine City Fire Department, and another watercraft from the Pine County Sheriff’s Office, a crew of deputies and firefighters made their way across the choppy waters toward MIKE GAINOR | THE PIONEER

Kindergarteners explain how to catch, cook a Thanksgiving turkey When Pine City teachers asked if the Pioneer would like to share their kindergarteners’ stories of how they would catch and cook a turkey this Thanksgiving, we jumped at the chance. Happy Thanksgiving! Tanner- I would catch it with a bow and arrow and then cook it in the oven. Cook it for 30 seconds, take it out and eat it. Armand- I would use a super sharp bow and arrow with camouflage. I

would cook it over a fire for 18 weeks. Then you take it home to cut it and eat it. Joseph- I would shoot a gun at it in the head and get him down. You knife him up and get the meat out. You put the meat in the pan and then in the oven. You cook for 48 hours until it is done. If you have leftovers you could bring it to school or let your dad take them to work. McCoy- I would grab a bow and ar-

row and shoot it. I would cook it in pans. The body is in a big pan and the legs are in a small pan. I would cook it on my oven for 20 minutes and then I’ll eat it! Jordan- I shoot a bow and arrow so I would use that. It’s easy. I would cook him in the stove. I would cook it for 2 hours. Then eat it. Hunter- I would shoot it with a gun
