A car struck and killed two men who were standing on Highway 18 in northern Pine County on the morning of Sept. 22. The Minnesota State Patrol reports that the fatal crash took place at approximately 6:23 a.m. on Sept. 22 as the two victims, Ronnie L. Colsch, 68, of Caledonia and Kent R. Mericle, 63, of Finlayson were inspecting damage caused by a minor accident. The minor accident reportedly occurred as follows: an International Semi driven by Mericle was backing into a
driveway along Highway 18 when a Chrysler traveling westbound, driven by Colsch, sideswiped the semi trailer. After the two men got out of their respective vehicles they went to the roadway to inspect the damage caused by the accident. As they stood on the roadway, a Buick Roadmaster driven by Martin E. Patterson, 44, of Rutledge struck them both. Both Colsch and Mericle were declared dead at the scene. Patterson was hospitalized with what the Minnesota State Patrol describes as non-life threatening injuries.
As members of her royal court (Skyler Rasinski, Jackie Crawford and EmmyRae Kuzel) look on, Butch Nicoll crowns Natalie Cahill as 2016 Homecoming Queen on Sept. 20, joining Homecoming King Jacob Lindblom.

Dale Dickey’s extermination business has been inundated with calls from people desperate to keep an inordinate flood of mice from entering their homes. “Nobody calls when they catch one, two or three mice. That’s kind of a normal fall. But they are catching 10, 12, 15. Some people get five or six a night. When they call here they are kind of in a panic mode,” Dickey said. Dickey works with his son-in-law and brother at East Central Exterminating which serves a 60-mile radius around Pine City. Matt Johnson of Johnson’s Hardware in Mora said that while fall is a typical time to see an increase in sales of mouse traps, poisons and repellents, the increase in sales has hit earlier and harder than in a typical year. “I can only speculate like the next person … I do attribute it to our higher water,” Dickey said. Dickey said the trend of increased mouse activity
