High-speed chase heads through Pine City STAFF REPORT NEWS@PINECITYMN.COM
Robert William Pladson, 48, of Sturgeon Lake has been charged with fleeing law enforcement and drug possession after allegedly leading deputies on a high-speed chase through Pine
City on Sept. 7. According to the criminal complaint filed by the Pine County Attorney’s Office, on Sept. 7 at approximately 12:36 a.m. a Pine County Sheriff’s Office deputy was on routine patrol in Pine City when he saw a vehicle eastbound on Henriette Road that did not have a
functioning driver’s side tail light and was showing white light on the tail light on the passenger side. The deputy turned around to stop the vehicle and noted it had increased in speed significantly. The deputy was able to catch up to the vehicle several blocks later, at which point they both
were southbound on Main Street traveling at 90 mph in a 30 mph zone. The deputy reports that he activated lights and sirens, and that the driver slowed but did not stop at the four-way stop sign at Main Street and Eighth SEE CHASE, PAGE 13

Andersons Rock Creek Relics celebrates skills of the past BY AMY DOEUN NEWS@PINECITYMN.COM
Don Schultz first became interested in blacksmithing at Knott’s Berry Farm in California in 1986. He saw a blacksmith at work there, and that small glimpse created a lifelong hobby for Schultz who began blacksmithing himself in 1990. He is now a member of the guild of metalsmiths, an organization out of the Twin Cities. On Sunday, Sept. 9, Schultz was working side by side with his grandson Chase who is now learning the trade at the Andersons Rock Creek Relics Threshing Show. Schultz has attended 28 out of the 29 years the show has been going on. He now has his own forge at his home in
Rock Creek but enjoys being able to share his trade with others at the threshing show. Chase and Don were making a hatchet. They are just a few of the people who have a love for traditional skills and crafts and restoring and preserving the past that have made the threshing show a success year after year. Robert Adamek was there with his restored 1938 McCormick Farmall Cub. Adamek said that it took him two-and-ahalf years to restore the Farmall. He has also built two tractors for his grandkids. All three of his tractors were in the Sunday tractor parade. The Anderson family of Rock Creek has SEE RELICS, PAGE 13
Pine City’s recently approved drug paraphernalia ordinance has been put into use, according to Pine County Sheriff Jeff Nelson. At the Sept. 5 Pine City Council meeting, Nelson said that in a recent community forum, concerns had been raised about drug paraphernalia being offered at a local business. This would put the business in violation of Pine City’s drug paraphernalia ordinance, which was approved by members of the city council on May 31 of this year. The ordinance covers four pages in the city’s 2018 ordinance and fee schedule. In the ordinance, “drug paraphernalia” is defined as: ... “all equipment, products and materials of any kind that are used, intended for use, or designed for use, in planting, propagating, cultivating, growing, harvesting, manufacturing, compounding, converting, producing, processing, preparing, testing, analyzing, packaging, repackaging, storing, containing, concealing, injecting, ingesting, inhaling or otherwise introducing into the human body a controlled substance.” Nelson said that he sent an investigator to the business, “to do some education, and gave them a little time to comply.” He said that as of a couple of days ago, the investigator returned to verify that the items had been removed. “Everything appears as though they’ve followed
Jeff Nelson PINE COUNTY SHERIFF through with that,” Nelson said. “That’s the benefit of having a good ordinance that we can help enforce.” “Do you think the ordinance as written will give you what you need?” asked Mayor Carl Pederson. “On that topic, yes,” Nelson responded. Council Member Mary Kay Sloan encouraged Nelson to contact the council with suggestions for any city ordinances which would improve security and safety in Pine City. “We would be happy to look at [suggested ordinances],” Sloan said. REPORTS AND REQUESTS Pine City contracts for a certain number of hours of dedicated service by the sheriff’s office each week, and staff at the sheriff’s office has been issuing the city a weekly report of activity within the Pine City limits. Pine City Administrator Ken Cammilleri described the reports as “helpful,” but asked that the name of the deputy involved in the activity be included in the call. Cammilleri also noted that Challeen Park is closed for the SEE COUNCIL, PAGE 13
