Summer Programs 2011 School’s out, summer’s here . . . what are you going to do? The answer at Pine Crest Summer Programs is, “Lots!” With twenty-one programs packed into eleven weeks of summer vacation, there is always something exciting and fun to do at Pine Crest. During the summer, the Fort Lauderdale campus is filled with artists and athletes, academics and explorers, swimmers and dancers…and often all of these are the same child. What are you going to do this summer? The answer is Pine Crest. Pine Crest Art Institute

Grades 1 - 8

Weeks 1 & 2

Out of this world! Are you ready to explore your imagination and creativity above and beyond the world as we know it? Summer artists will create original works of art while learning exciting techniques and exploring different types of media. Activities will include sculpture, painting, drawing, and other hands-on experiences. Art lovers from all schools who are entering Grade 1 - 8 may enroll for full-day or morning-only sessions, either one or both weeks. Students will be grouped by grade. Fee includes all materials. NEW! Science Gone Wild Students will explore the world of predator/prey relationships. Investigations deal with animal adaptations that enable organisms to survive -- or not. Come join in the hunt: learn how to eat like a bird and see what’s been eaten, and discover how the power of camouflage translates to survival in the wild. Week One only

NEW! “Sun”sational- Are you Sun Smart? Students will spend time reflecting, detecting and erecting devices that demonstrate the power of the sun and UV rays. NEW! Tech @ PC Geekify your summer! Worried that you will miss using a computer all summer? Fingers itching to get to the keyboard and create something amazing? This new project-based course will include learning how to use programs such as Scratch and ToonDoo to create animation, games, comic books, and mini-movies. Guided by your interest and unlimited ideas, we will explore themes and expression through the use of technology. Girls and Boys Basketball Panther Basketball Camp prides itself on teaching young boys and girls the fundamentals of the game. The program will focus on developing team play and improving individual skills, as well as increasing sportsmanship. Each day will include teaching stations, individual competition, team play, and a daily focus detailing the proper mechanics of ball-handling, shooting form, passing, and defensive techniques. Lacrosse Camp

Sticks up! Keep on checking! Lacrosse Camp is the perfect place to learn the fundamentals of the action-packed game of lacrosse. It is designed for beginners who are interested in learning about the game and developing their individual and team skills. The program will focus on developing stick skills such as cradling, catching, throwing and shooting, as well as introduce offensive and defensive concepts specific to the sport of either boys or girls lacrosse. No equipment necessary; all you need to bring is energy and lacrosse excitement! The boys’ coach will be Doug Shanahan, former professional lacrosse player with the Chicago Machine and Pine Crest Varsity Head Lacrosse Coach; the girls will be coached by Eileen Pliske, Director of the Pine Crest Girls Lacrosse Program and Varsity Lacrosse Head Coach. SPORTS CAMPS Volleyball Camp

Grades 4 – 9

Weeks 1 & 2

Panther Volleyball Camp teaches the fun and fundamentals of the game to girls entering Grades 4 – 9. Activities focus on developing individual skills and team play. Each day will include time at teaching stations to learn passing, setting, spiking, and serving. Then the girls will have the opportunity to use these skills in fun and challenging games. Baseball Camp

What’s more summer than baseball? Pine Crest Summer Baseball Camp! In addition to teaching core batting, pitching, catching, and fielding skills, Baseball Camp will provide training in team play and game strategy. Coaches will use innovative techniques to teach boys entering Grades 4 - 9 how to combine solid skills instruction with the fun of learning the great game of baseball. Future Stars Football Camp

Grades 4 – 9

Pass! Run! Kick! Panther Future Stars Football Camp, a non-contact program, teaches boys from all schools who are entering Grades 4-9 the fundamentals and fun of playing the game of football. Students will be instructed daily in small groups with positional work related to offense, defense, and special teams. Daily games and special competitions will highlight teamwork and skills. Experienced Pine Crest coaches will enhance student learning and love of the game through a low camper/coach ratio. Join the Future Stars team today! Summer Rowing Programs Rowing Camp: Learn to Row

Grades 6 – 12

Weeks 1 - 4

Rowing down the river! Open to students from all schools who will be entering Grades 6 – 12 in the fall. This camp is designed to introduce campers to the sport of rowing. This half-day, one or two-week camp will include land and water instruction emphasizing safety, proper boat handling skills, fundamental rowing techniques, teamwork, and physical conditioning. Water safety is stressed, and campers must be able to swim. Rowing camp will be coached by the Pine Crest coaching staff, who have extensive experience introducing beginners to the fun and excitement of the sport of rowing. Returning campers will be given advanced instruction. PE credit available for Upper School.* Dates: Middle School: Upper School*:

High Performance Competitive Rowing Camp

Grades 9 – 12

Weeks 2 - 6

This five-week camp is designed to prepare rowers with at least one year of experience to compete at the Club National Championship Regatta in Indianapolis. The program will feature collegiate guest coaches and the opportunity to include SAT test preparation each day. The coaching staff will provide sweep and sculling instruction with experience racing in eights, fours, and doubles. Enrollment is limited. Ages: Dates: Cost:

Students entering Grades 9 – 12 who have at least one year of rowing experience June 13 – July 17 $2,800 - includes instruction and Regatta expenses (transportation, hotel, and race entry fees). SAT preparation: $950 for math and verbal.

This program is also available to students from outside the area with housing and local transportation available for an additional fee. Dance - Expeditions Summer Dance

Grades 2 – 12

Weeks 1 & 2

Dance Level I is for beginning level students entering Grades 2-5. Includes ballet, tap, and jazz. Half-day morning program. May combine with Art Institute or Tennis. Dance Level II is for intermediate students entering Grades 5-8. Includes ballet, pointe or pre-pointe, variations, and additional dance styles. Dance Level III is for advanced students entering Grade 7 and up. Includes ballet, pointe, variations, and additional dance styles. Ages: Students entering Grades 2 – 12 Dates: June 6 – 17 Placement in Levels II and III is at teacher’s discretion. Expeditions

Where are you going this summer? To Pine Crest! Journey with us to exciting locations, learn about cultures around the world, and have creative fun without leaving campus as we explore the world with an artistic point of view. We will create craft projects, explore movement and music, make stories, and build memories in this two week program. Open to students from all schools who are entering Grades 1-5 in the fall. Limited bus service available.

*Extra Credit: Students entering Grades 9 and 10 may earn one quarter credit in Upper School physical education upon successful completion of a full two-week session of Rowing Camp, Tennis Camp, Swim Camp, or Summer Dance. This graded option includes some assignments and assessments. Students who complete this option will be scheduled for a study hall instead of Physical Education class for one quarter of the year. (Attendance in Health class one day per week is required for that quarter. Replacement of PE with a study hall does not reduce the basic tuition fee.) Be sure to check the Upper School Credit option on your registration form.

Tennis Camp

Grades PK – 10

Weeks 1 - 9

Play tennis and have a ball! Tennis lovers from all schools who are ages 4 - 16 will take their places on the ten Pine Crest courts. Beginners will learn the fundamentals of tennis and basic stroke techniques in small groups; more advanced players will work on fitness, drills, and match play. During supervised free time, campers may choose to swim, watch a movie, play in the game room, or continue practicing their tennis. Snacks, drinks, and lunch are included. Bus service and extended day are available at an additional cost.

High Performance Tennis Camp

Grades 3 – 12

Weeks 1 - 9

Game, set, match! The serious advanced player will have the opportunity to train under the supervision of a USTA High Performance coach. Fitness will be emphasized along with innovative drills and match play. This program is open to all tennis juniors interested in taking their game to the next level. Lunch is included. From the first toe into the water to pre-Olympic training, the Pine Crest Swim Camps offer a wide range of instruction and training to swimmers from all schools – and around the world! Competitive Swimming Ages 9 – 17 Weeks 2 - 8 Overnight & Day Camp Our premiere summer swim program. Spend two to seven weeks with us, and we will help you attain new heights in the pool. Our training program and coaches have one primary objective - to make a significant impact on your swimming. If you are a competitive swimmer, this camp will take you to the next level. Rising Star Swimming and Dive Day Camp Ages 3 – 12 Weeks 1 - 8 The perfect opportunity for kids who love to be in the pool! Instructional time is split between swimming instruction and diving instruction. Great for the child who wants to participate in more than one summer activity. Pine Crest Summer School offers enrichment and credit courses across the curriculum for students from all schools who are entering Grades 9 – 12. From the popular Ethics class to full-year work in math, English, and world language, Summer School provides an opportunity for students to earn credit and prepare for more advanced work in the fall.

SAT Preparation at Pine Crest

Aim for the best and prepare with the best in the Pine Crest SAT Preparation courses in Reading and Writing Skills and Math Skills. Open to students from all schools who will be entering Grades 10 – 12, these two-week classes include specialized instruction in a small-group setting, test-taking strategies, and practice tests. Summer Enrichment Programs We make summer learning fun! Pine Crest offers an exciting, comprehensive summer program designed to appeal to a variety of interests. Students starting Grades Pre-K – 12 develop new skills, hone old ones, and learn the value of teamwork and cooperation, while learning and having fun. Top-notch facilities and caring professionals provide a meaningful summer experience for all campers. This academic enrichment program offers a preview and review to help prepare students for the new school year. Experienced Pine Crest teachers will guide children through project-based learning activities, where the focus is on the child as an active participant. The main components of this program are reading, math, and creative writing. Research and study skills will be reinforced where appropriate. The classroom strategies will consist of open-ended questioning and discovery. This program is for new and returning Pine Crest students. Class size will be limited, so enroll early!

Afternoon Enrichment Afternoon Adventures

PK and K

“Read it again!” is the plea when a child and a story connect. His giggles, her sighs, the absolute stillness, and the way he inches closer confirms that a book is a “read it again” story. Each day your child’s afternoon adventure will focus on a variety of literature-based activities that include math, art, science, reading, and cooking experiences. Join the fun for PK and K students.

Art

Grades K – 5 What color is your imagination? Summer Art offers students the chance to explore their imagination and creativity through a variety of projects. Summer artists will make original works of art while learning exciting techniques and using different kinds of media. Activities will include sculpture, painting, drawing, and other hands-on experiences.

Science: Discover and Learn Join us for an adventurous afternoon in the science lab. The children will participate in a variety of experiments involving biology, chemistry, and physical science. All supplies and materials are included. Come prepared to get messy and have fun!

Afternoon Enrichment Programs Skill Builders

Grades 2-5

Skill Builder for Grades 2 and 3: Meets individual needs for reading, language, and math skills. The students refresh last year’s skills in preparation for the upcoming fall. Building around a common theme, students are involved in research, reading, and writing. As students receive intensive practice in spelling, writing, reading, and math, they gain the confidence to begin the year with the skills they will need to get them off to a strong start. They also familiarize themselves with school procedures, make new friends, and meet teachers. Language Arts for Grades 4 and 5: The Write Stuff! Learn how mastery of language arts basics leads to better written expression. Using the Six-Trait Writing Model, students will learn how to develop competency in the areas of ideas and content, word choice, fluency, voice, organization, and conventions. Breaking down each trait into manageable parts will help students develop skills they can use for a lifetime. Math for Grades 4 and 5: Jump start your math! Small groups rotate through math activity stations using games, manipulatives, and teacher-led activities. Computers are used to reinforce math skills and concepts. Near the end of each day the class will come together in a whole group activity covering skills or concepts in geometry, measurement, or probability through hands-on projects.

Strings in the Afternoon

Grades K – 5

Week 10 Only

Calling all violins, violas, and cellos! If you are a strings player – or if you would like to become one – Strings in the Afternoon is the program for you. Pine Crest Strings conductor Deena Shapiro will direct the one-week session. It combines master class and small group instruction with ensemble playing and musical games and crafts. Strings in the Afternoon welcomes children who have never played an instrument as well as those who have strings experience. A limited number of instruments will be available for rental. Please be sure to specify playing level on the Registration Form for appropriate group placement: Beginning (never played a string instrument), Intermediate (playing 1 –2 years), Advanced (playing 3 years or more).

Beginning Band Camp

Grades 4 - 6

Toot your own horn! This course is especially tailored for students entering 4th, 5th, or 6th grades who want to be able to say proudly, “I’m with the band!” Over the course of five morning sessions, students will have the opportunity to experience band instruments hands-on through listening, demonstration, playing, and experimentation. With the help of instructors, students will be better equipped to select an instrument for study by the end of the final session. With instruments selected and obtained by the first day of school, the Band will be off to a great start!

The Middle School Preview gives students an opportunity to refresh and sharpen their skills in math, English, technology, and world languages just before the new school year begins. Each student will be challenged by our quality of course content and academic independence in a casual summer environment. Students in Preview will be able to start the school year at full speed. These classes are particularly helpful to students who are newly enrolled at Pine Crest. Ages: Pine Crest students entering Grades 6-8 Dates: August 8 – 19 Time: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. This program is one two-week session.

Upper School Preview

Grades 9 – 12

The Upper School Preview provides an opportunity to review and preview critical skills in English, math, and technology just before the new school year begins. This program is particularly helpful to students who are newly enrolled at Pine Crest. It also gives returning students a chance to get ready to start the new school year at their best. Classes focus on preparation for challenging courses and academic independence in a casual summer environment. Preview helps students master their summer reading assignments and brush up on math skills and concepts. It also provides an overview of the technology skills they will need to succeed in Pine Crest’s wireless laptop environment. Ages: Dates: Time:

Get your fingers up to speed. Designed to help students who are new to Pine Crest start the school year with a comfort level in keyboarding skills. Includes practice disk and materials. Video Boot Camp

Grades 6 - 12

Weeks 10 & 11

Exercise creativity and build technical skills in this two-week workout for budding filmmakers. Students will become proficient in camera and camcorder use, film editing software and learn the process of storyboarding, script writing and on camera improvisation. Teams will create original short film projects demonstrating a variety of topic formats. Digital cameras and camcorders will be provided for student use. Continue your creative journey through art, literature, writing, cooking and more in the afternoons with Mrs. Fisher. Travels will focus on one location and its many facets each week. Grades 6 - 12

Ink it up! Welcome to Panther Press Studio, where students explore their creativity using basic concepts in printmaking. Projects will include monotypes, linoleum block stamps, and solar plate etching. Students will investigate a wide range of tools, from ink rollers, wooden spoons, and rice paper to using our etching press and photosensitized metal plates, where images are developed outside using sunlight. This course will also provide a historical overview of printmaking and show how famous artists from Rembrandt to Picasso created graphic works of art. Instructor Ron Garrett, a veteran of the Visual Arts department at Pine Crest, will guide students in this enriching and hands-on approach to making art in a relaxed studio environment. Space is limited. No experience necessary; all you need is a desire to ink it up and make beautiful prints.
