ΝΕΩΝ ΤΟΠΟΣ a bo a t yard f o r wooden vessels

Having our attention captured by the constant degradation of the value that wooden vessels have in our country, we decided to address to the timeless relationship between the Greek people and the sea, a symbol of which is the wooden vessel itself, by designing a boatyard, a place for the damaged boat to heal. The act of “healing” a boat requires the use of an inclined plane called launch ramp as the minimum condition for the boatyard to exist, making the design of the launch ramp the most important clue of this project. Facing the city of Volos, the synthesis is located in the location of the old boatyards, at the edge of the port, next to the starting point of the mythical ship of Argo. For the past century and half, this place has been hosting boatyards, whose needs of operation have led to major interventions such as a crevice in the hill and a large scale landfill in 1983 as part of the redesign of the port. The design is defined by two axes: the axis of the ramp realising the relationship between the sea and the land and the axis parallel to the coastline that symbolises the relationship between the two sides of the cliff. Approaching the site, a cemetery for old wooden vessels is organized on the lanfill of 1983 surrounding a remaining old launch ramp. The cemetery functions as a melancholic garden for the boatyard and the starting point of a promenade through the site.

The crevice of the cliff in the site is shaped in order to place the launch ramp, as a retreat of the earth from the sea in order to welcome the boat. The main sheltered working space is located beside the ramp. A concrete wall is placed next to the launch ramp at the exact position of the crevice, in order to hill the wound of the hill and host the required facilities in three main levels. The wall functions as a screen before which the maintenance of the vessel takes place and it takes two main openings which provide communication between the indoor and the outdoor spaces of the boatyard.

The main working space consists of an inclined plane – 5% - where the construction and the maintenance of the boats take place. This plane that begins from the launch ramp, can be extended up to the entrance of the boatyard where an open parking for boats can be found. On the one side of the working space, a route connects the entrance of the boatyard with a pier. On the other side - the side of the concrete wall, there is another pier used for the short-term maintenance works on water.

As far as the other facilities are concerned, on the ground floor one can find the carpentry as well as the electronic and mechanical workshops. On the first floor, the administration offices, the sail design workshop and the vessel design section are organised. On the top floor there is placed a thematic library concerning boat building. All facilities are connected with a variety of outdoor spaces in all three floors in a way that the communication with the cliff is restored. As an example, a cafe on the second floor is connected with both a balcony on the side of the canal and another one that leads to the cliff.

Our proposal aspires to create a new site for the boat, focusing both on program and topography. It contributes to the constant transformation of the coastline of the port and at the same time becomes part of the continuum of a site that changes according to the demands of the boatyard. Functional and spatial correlations are combined in order to create a lanscape that not only addresses the boat, but also the city of Volos. By redifing the shape of the port, our intervention becomes an integral part of the topography itself.

STITCHING THE BUFFER ZONE s t ra t e gic pl a ns an d p r op osals for n i cosi a bu ffer zon e

Nicosia buffer zone is a contemporary “avaton” dividing the city in two parts. Its current image forms a dystopian scenery full of horrific reminiscents of the war, where both total amnesia and excess of memory exist. Therefore, it consists some kind of a “no man’s land”, or better put, a non-place where time has paused. Under the assumption of a future reunited city, we approach the dead zone as a line of unique and unprecedent form and a raw historic landscape to be preserved. In our proposal, void is used as the most adequate design tool to address to the ethics of intervening in a such a place. The buffer zone retains its form and is repurposed as a metropolitan museum park planted with local straws, the most important exhibit of which is the zone itself as well as the ruins inside it. The former landscape of oblivion is given back to the whole of the city and it is transformed into a topos of reflection and historical awareness. In addition to that, a research centre for the history of the city of Nicosia is proposed, as well as a researchers’ village beside it. Balancing between ideas of life and death, oblivion and memory, emptiness and fullness, our approach serves the vision of preserving the key traces of the past in the development of the contemporary city of Nicosia while offering historical and cultural education for the generations to come.

The museum park operates relatively to the Research Centre for the City of Nicosia. The centre is designed in two levels underground in an incision of the earth next to the dead zone border, resembling a contemporary “slot” of culture. Its main axis is a long linear public movement dividing program functions in two opposing bars. At the end of the building and on the city level, there is a large public square. A river-bed of public flow, or else, an enlarged line of interrelations and sharing, is thus created transforming the research centre into an exit of the museum park to the city.

Northwestern of the Research Centre there is a large area of unbuilt free space where we propose the design of a researchers’ residential complex. There are two types of apartments which are combined so as to form two residential bars, one of which is aligned to the axes of the underground centre, and the other rotated in order to follow the axes of the city. In a repetitive pattern, those bars can potentially expand to meet to residential development needs in the contemporary city of Nicosia.

The old oil-press constitutes an important building for the Rodia settlement in the island of Crete. The architectural and archaeological value of the shell, along with the fact that it is one of the few remaining samples of vernacular architecture in the settlement, urge for its immediate restoration. Not only that, it also presents unique specimens of industrial production, containing well preserved machinery of the olive processing procedure. The building consists of two levels, the first one of which used to serve as the main space for the olive - oil production process and the second one for commercial use. The main material of the shell is local stone with a later concrete extension in the southern part. The floors and internal walls are made of wood as well as the severely damaged roof.

An important part of the restoration proposal is the adaptive reuse of the old building for communal use. The fist floor is transformed into an exhibition space sheltering all the original machines and tools that were found, whereas the upper floor is turned into a community centre hosting educational and interactive activities for the children of the village. Our strategy aims at the preservation of this unique sample of industrial architecture through repurposing and the education of the generations to come.

According to restoration ethics, our intervention is clearly distincted from the original building. The wooden roof is replaced by a metal structure with skylights bringing light to the interior. The upper floor is completely restored using metal and wood. At the front of the building, on the southern side, all the concrete additions altering the original image of the shell are removed and replaced by a patio with wooden shades on a metal frame. Lastly, the windows and doors, being relatively not damaged, are preserved and restored to their original state. 1

The synthesis is a proposal for a public School of Performing Arts along with an experimental stage and is located next to a high speed car junction between Piraeus Ave and Chamosternas Str in Athens. The business and commercial character of the two streets expressed in the high rise multifunctional buildings around the site as opposed to the residential character of the neighbourhood beside them call for a redefinition of the relationship between the neighbourhood and the big avenues. In addition to that, matters of scale, function and symbolic meaning generate considerable issues to handle through design. The main idea consists of a ragged line penetrating the site through a park and connecting the neighbourhood with Piraeus Ave. This line functions as a “carrier� for public movement and shapes the theatrical stage building. On the other hand, the educational facilities of the school are to be found in a robust solid form that rises from the ground freeing the space underneath for a plaza and an open-air theatre. The two volumes that are created are connected through a semi-underground foyer on the level of the plaza.

The educational facilities are verically organised in 3 levels hovering over the ground and overseeing the park and the plaza. The large volume on the one hand refers to the scale of the district, while on the other creates micro environments compared to human scale.Strict as it may seem, the shell contains bumps and voids creating a dialectic between indoor and outdoor space. In addition to that, the extended use of window panels function as a viewing “screen“ of the educational process both from the park and from the pedestrian and vehicles approaching from Pireaus Str and vice versa.

The theatre of the complex is an experimental stage used by the students of the school. It is organised in two levels: the theatrical floor and the mezzanine, and it is connected with backstage studios and theatrical laboratories . The main structure material is metal and all the finishes are wooden. In addition, there are adaptable custom designed light metal and wooden structures for seats that offer the possibility of multiple plan layouts.

The city we live in is currently redefined not only in its boundaries but also regarding its scale. The overabundance of needs decentralises the city core while human activities spread in a much larger field. The emerging model of the global city is expanding in a network where the near and the elsewhere are changing in meaning. This new condition is significantly reflected in architecture, too. In the book “Non places: Introduction to an Anthropology of Supermodernity”, Marc Augé distinguishes three figures of excess that describe the new reality of the global city and introduces the term of supermodernity. Using Syggrou Avenue as a case study, our thesis pinpoints Augé’s supermodernity in the city of Athens, in both a theoretical and a practical approach. Phenomena utterly connected with the new scale alter the balance of the city elements and emerge a new category of buildings that we call “new elements” - or in the original term“νέα σημεία”[nea simea]. The architecture of these new elements is decoded in an attempt to a further understanding of the supermodern metropolis. The thesis results in a critical consideration that restores the value of the anthropological approach in architecture and brings back the human factor regarding the design and the image of the city. As an answer to the problematics of the excess in space, time and scale, a manifest for the city of supermodernity is composed.

RESTORATION OF THE MUNICIPAL MARKET OF CHALKIDA Ho norabl e m e nti on i n an ar ch i tectu r al comp eti ti on

The project is a proposal for the restoration and functional rehabilitation of the old municipal market of the city of Chalkida and its adjacent square. It was awarded an honorable mention during the national architectural competition launched by the city’s Municipal Council in 2016. Chalkida is a long-lived Greek city dating since the paleolithic era that bears visible elements from diverse historical periods. However, the prolonged negligence of architectural preservation and the absence of a strategic plan for the management of local heritage have given a largely fragmentary morphological character to the city. The municipal market, currently in an abandoned and dilapidated state, and its adjacent square are both examples of this heterogenous identity. The purpose of the proposal is thus to create an “umbrella” under which all the historical samples-extracts found in the intervention area can coexist and interact in order to foster the reactivation of the pubic space. Specifically, the design proposes the preservation of the two distinct architectural and historical phases of the building complex (late 19th century and early 20th century) as well as of the more recent interventions bearing historical or architectural interest. The aim is to reintroduce the feeling of urbanity in a former topos of collective memory by favoring mixity and density and to establish a new relationship between the market, the square and the surrounding neighborhood.

The existing shell is restored to the extent that it preserves its morphological features and is upgraded in terms of functionality. All proposed additions are lightweight, reversible and retractable (fabric sunshades and canopy, wooden exterior skin) and they are strategically designed so as to favour openess and encourage social interaction and common activities (sheltered central space for holding events and open-air market on the square).

INTERIOR VIEW OF THE MARKET

The distribution of commercial uses in the complex is designed in order to enhance the interaction between the market, the square and the city. An open-air fare, reflecting the interior uses of the market, is proposed on the square and enhances the flows between the two poles. The central patio of the market is covered by a retractable fabric shelter and can potentially host cultural events, open-air projections, etc. The market regains its importance in the city and becomes a contemporary commercial, cultural and social center for Chalkida.

This is an international architectural, two-phase competition that lasted 8 months. In the first phase, among 129 entries, seven propositions were selected, and in the second phase, three awards were given by the 9 members jury, in which Sir Peter Cook and Elias Zengelis took part. The new museum will host one of the largest collections of Cypriot archeology, projecting into international scope the history and the culture of Cyprus. The particularity of an archaeological museum is that it hosts a world that comes from the bowels of earth. The residues of human life, humble or precious, clumsy or artifacts, that the earth preserved offering them the value of priceless. With this value they were rediscovered by the humans, digging into the earth to find their identity. They are the distant traces of everyday people, the archetype offspring of human life. Anthropocentric prototypes of chronic soul. What should be then the new environment for something that comes back to light? The proposal suggests to be raised from the soil, and declare its presence to modern humans. Since when something returns from obscurity and oblivion becomes collective memory and belongs to all. Needs a new protected environment, but which communicates, receives and diffuses in the city. It is the hovering cloud of a distinctive heritage, which while longer belongs to all – is global -, it cannot leave because is attracted from the Cypriot land of its birth and thus levitates but remains motionless –it is “meteor” -, unable to be separated from the terra.

The intention for highlighting the archeological finds from the excavation and the past to the light and the present time, led to elevate the museum, thus allowing for the ground level to remain free and be formed with various qualities. As a result, it is created a new spatial stratigraphy composed by three horizontal zones. The upper zone with the hovering body of the museum – the Memory layer. The intermediate zone that welcomes the city – the City layer. The lower zone – the River layer – which hosts everyday functions, is organized around the museum’s atriums and extends to the new park of Pedios river.

The content of the permanent exhibition defined the architectural proposal with the division of three spatial and conceptual entities, each one corresponding on one of the lifted volumes. TOPOS, narrates prehistory and focuses on the relations of the first settlers with the land and its resources. SEA, focuses on the continuous relation between the island and the sea – the timeless intermediate. COSMOS, concerns the historical times, focusing on the relations and the interactions between Mediterranean cultures.

The new archaeological museum -within today’s globalized reality- seeks to express its identity through the elements that gave birth to the Cypriot civilization, not only the materials, but also the characteristics of the Mediterranean life and culture that are still alive in the everyday life of the locus. This is an interior design project destined to host the flying academy of Orange2Fly airline company in Athens, Greece. Our approach was to capture the identity of the company and apply it to our design in order to create a bright, contemporary working space fostering efficiency in learning, conviviality and interaction, as well as ensuring privacy when needed. For this purpose, we extensively used semi-transparent materials that allow natural light to diffuse and visual interactions to take place. Careful consideration was also given to the lightning design of the space so as to enhance the effect of natural lightning, highlight the forms and their materiality and create a pleasant, welcoming interior.
