Marissa Ryan Marissa (Dotson) and Ryan Milewski | November 2, 2013 First Presbyterian Church | Wilmington | Laura Ingram Photography

Ryan and Marissa both grew up in Southern

Pines in the James Creek neighborhood, where there was always something happening — sledding down Stillman Hill, for instance, or jumping on the Dotsons’ trampoline. But with a seven-year age difference, Ryan and Marissa didn’t pay each other much attention. Marissa did, however, grow close to Ryan’s younger sister, Mollyrose. The girls traveled to soccer games together and eventually lived on the same floor of University Towers while attending North Carolina State University. In 2008 — once the age gap was no longer a deterrent — Ryan and Marissa went on their first date in Chapel Hill to hear a bluegrass band. Their relationship was never awkward for Mollyrose, who was their biggest supporter and eventually Marissa’s maid of honor. Ryan’s brother, Danny, served as best man to make it a true family affair. Marissa’s adult pastor, Larry Lyon, and childhood pastor, Dudley Crawford, joined Ernie Thompson, pastor of Wilmington’s First Presbyterian Church, to officiate.

&

Seeing all of her loved ones in one church was an emotional experience for Marissa. She wore her mother’s veil and carried her late grandmother’s pearl brooch on her bouquet. In the end, it was the small, sentimental moments that meant more than any other wedding day details to Marissa — especially listening to Ryan say his vows. The couple chose a 4 p.m. ceremony to place them at the reception site in time to see the sun set over one of their favorite spots — the Intracoastal Waterway. They chose Bluewater Grill as their reception venue for its open space and large dance floor, all conspiring for an evening of fun by the water. For their getaway, the couple ran through a tunnel of sparklers and jumped aboard Gamekeeper, a 50-foot Sportfisher. In their first leap of faith as a married couple, Marissa allowed Ryan to plan the entire honeymoon, only telling her the destination once they arrived at the airport and found their gate. Surprising her with a trip to the Turks and Caicos Islands, Ryan exceeded his new bride’s expectations and set the tone for a long, happy life together as husband and wife. B&G

Clint

Chance (Cobb) and Clint Campbell | May 17, 2014 The Campbell House | Southern Pines | S.E. Crawford Photography

For Clint and Chance Campbell, life is always an ad-

venture. In fact, when Clint asked Chance to marry him, they were on a stroll along the Mississippi River that led them into a not-so-great area of New Orleans. They laugh about it now. But it is their shared sense of humor and ability to make the most of any situation that make Clint and Chance so perfect for each other, which was obvious from the night they met. In 2012, while tagging along at her sister’s Christmas party in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Chance spotted Clint at a little pizza bar called Helen Back and purposely bumped into him for the opportunity to introduce herself. Then, yelling over the band, Chance told her sister she had just met the most handsome man in the world, Clint. She had no idea that he was standing right behind her. Needless to say, they spent the rest of the night laughing together and have been inseparable ever since. For their laid-back outdoor wedding, the Campbell House was the perfect backdrop. With its stately grounds and manor house, the venue tied together all of the elements — from the

&

taco bar and margarita machine to the vintage sofas from Vieux Vintage Rentals. Allen Ashdown of Southern Pines played guitar as guests arrived and during cocktail hour after the ceremony. He also taught himself Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World” — the song Chance and her father frequently danced to when they lived in Hawaii. He played it as Chance walked down the aisle. Chance chose light blue, navy and sea foam for her colors and incorporated them into the bridal party’s attire. Peach and coral flowers added soft pops of color to bouquets and boutonnieres. Ultimately, the couple wanted to give their guests an amazing night to remember. Chance handed all of the details over to vendors she trusted and allowed them to turn her vision into a reality. According to the happy couple, it was the most fun they’ve ever had at a wedding — and they feel lucky that it just so happened to be their wedding. B&G

Meagan Jason Meagan (Edwards) and Jason Lee | April 26, 2014 Village Chapel/Carolina Hotel | Pinehurst | Tara Parker Photography

It was wedding season. Meagan’s childhood

friend was marrying Jason’s fraternity brother, and they were both going to be in the wedding. At the engagement party, Jason remembers being attracted to Meagan’s eyes — and not only because they were beautiful. They held a happiness, warmth and sense of adventure that continues to captivate him years later. Early on, Meagan realized that Jason was the one when — even though her living in Raleigh made the logistics of dating a challenge — everything between them was easy. And Jason not only clicked with Meagan; he clicked with her family. “My family loved him from the start, and that was very important to me,” says the bride. Meagan’s love of the simple things in life carried over into her classic style and muted palette, which included ivory, white and green. She chose pale lilac bridesmaids, dresses and flowers in shades of white, green and soft pink.

&

PS Bride

Groom 2015

When Meagan first saw The Village Chapel during a visit with Jason while they were dating, she knew if their relationship led to the altar, it would be there. Not only was the venue beautiful, but the chapel also reminded Meagan of the church she grew up attending. The Carolina Hall and Terrace Room of the Carolina Hotel offered the best of both worlds with an indoor/outdoor reception. Meagan urges brides-to-be not to sweat the small stuff. By setting aside one day each week to work on wedding plans, you can ensure the plans don’t consume you. For Meagan, any stress she had experienced leading up to the wedding melted away the instant the chapel doors opened and she saw Jason. Jason’s advice for future grooms? Stay out of the planning altogether. His favorite moment of the wedding was finally being pronounced Mr. and Mrs. Jason Lee, and then turning around to share that moment with his and Meagan’s family and closest friends. B&G

Weston

Marci (O’Donnel) and Weston Davis | August 30, 2014 Fearrington Village | Pittsboro | Southern Love Studios

After a full day of unpacking, Marci didn’t want to

open one more box. She had been helping Weston move into his new house in Raleigh, and, frankly, was ready to move on with the evening. So when Marci bypassed a special box — the one with an engagement ring hidden inside it — Weston changed his plan and opened it himself. “The next thing I knew, Weston was on one knee with the ring in his hand,” says Marci. “What a surprise!” Fearrington Village provided the perfect blend of farm and formal to suit Marci and Weston’s elegant yet laid-back style. Guests entered the pecan gardens through wreath-adorned gates; vintage pews faced the altar; an antique mantel displayed a collection of mason jars filled with long-stemmed flowers; and five chandeliers hung from the tree at the end of the aisle to complete a scene that was, in a word, breathtaking. At the the reception, held in a rustic barn on the property, vintage shutters displayed photographs that told the story of Marci and Weston, and guests were encouraged to write their best wishes for the couple on ornaments that were tied to a

&

Groom 2015

wishing tree. It was the small, personal touches that meant the most to Marci — like carrying her grandparents’ wedding bands around her bouquet and displaying wedding photos of parents and grandparents at the reception. Custom drapery and lighting created a warm and welcoming vibe for their black-tie reception, and lace runners dressed up farm tables for the bridal party and family. Weston loved the smile on Marci’s face each time he looked at her that night — so much so that he promises future grooms that “it’s worth all of the planning.” Marci’s advice for future brides is to simply enjoy the big day. “It goes by way too fast,” she says. As did the honeymoon: two weeks exploring Thailand, from the Bangkok metropolis to the island of Ko Samui. Looking back, Marci wouldn’t change a thing about her big day, although she admits that she would have loved to have had the heartfelt and humorous speeches from the rehearsal dinner and reception on film. Another lesson learned: Always remember to unpack the last box. B&G

Katie Robert Katie (Wainwright) and Robert Hoadley | April 26, 2014 Pinehurst Country Club | Pinehurst | Sayer Photography

Katie wasn’t suspicious when Robert asked

her to watch the sunset with him at Reservoir Park. The reservoir was one of their regular haunts, and had been ever since they met as high school seniors at a Union Pines versus Pinecrest High School basketball game in 2008. But as Katie approached their usual spot on this particular December day, it was obvious that this wasn’t going to be an ordinary sunset. There were banners, flickering candles and photographs of the couple strategically placed by the water’s edge, a cotton candy sky the perfect winter backdrop. “He led me down the dock . . . got down on one knee and asked me to marry him,” says Katie. An April wedding was in order. Katie and Robert wanted their wedding to reflect their unique relationship, which meant their love of golf and strong faith would both come into play. Picking a venue was easy. Robert had grown up playing golf at Pinehurst Country Club, where Katie works as a member service representative. During the ceremony, their minister, Benford Edwards, told personal stories about the couple and their relationships, and Katie’s cousin sang “When I Say I Do”

&

PS Bride

Groom 2015

while the bride and groom poured colored sand into a glass to symbolize their union. Even the time of their ceremony, 3:45 p.m., held a special meaning for Katie and her father, who have always made a game of noticing consecutive numbers on the clock. For the reception, Katie and Robert chose the Outlook ballroom for its view of the 18th green of Pinehurst No. 2, and named each table for a famous golfer. For another special touch, picture frames displayed unique facts about Robert and Katie that guests may not have otherwise known. Katie also recorded her thoughts every day during their engagement and presented Robert with her journals on their wedding day. Robert remembers every second of watching Katie walk down the aisle toward him — a sight he’d anticipated since meeting her. For Katie, who wore a pearl necklace that belonged to her grandmother and a Pandora bracelet given to her by Robert, nothing compared to mingling with guests at the reception as the new Mrs. Katie Hoadley. Katie and Robert both felt that the sun went down too soon on their big day. But there are plenty of future sunsets to be enjoyed — over the reservoir, the golf course, and everywhere else life takes them. B&G

Ashley Clint Ashley (Collins) and Clint Fields | May 24, 2014 Private residence | Pinewild | Caroline Lima Photography

Ashley Collins and Clint Fields were sixth-

graders at New Century Middle School when they first met, but they didn’t make their relationship official until four years later, when Ashley hopped into Clint’s truck to find a red rose tucked into the dash. Eight years later, a traditional wedding was the perfect way to celebrate Clint and Ashley’s old-fashioned love story. They wanted their big day to reflect their strong family values. Having grown up together, Clint and Ashley were already close to each other’s parents. They’d always dreamed of getting married on Clint’s family farm, but with busy schedules and an entire wedding to plan, they simply didn’t have time to get the farm wedding-ready. When family friends stepped in and offered their home and backyard as a venue, it felt like the perfect answer. They decided on a 6 p.m. wedding for optimal lighting and relief from the Carolina heat. A natural color scheme and simple décor such as burlap

and mason jars reflected the couple’s rustic sensibility and love of the outdoors. They tied the knot in front of a gazebo made by Clint’s father. For Ashley, there was no moment greater than standing at the top of the stairs with her daddy — the first man she ever loved — and seeing her past, present and future reflected in the faces of friends and family. In that moment, she realized that everything would be perfect on her big day because, after all, she was marrying her best friend. Clint’s favorite moment was laying eyes on Ashley for the first time. After years of imagining how she might look on their wedding day, he was blown away by her simple beauty and overwhelmed by the deep love he feels for her. Afterward, the couple danced to an old favorite, George Strait’s “I Cross My Heart.” They’d always known that would be their song. And after celebrating with guests, the couple made their getaway in Clint’s father’s 1930 Ford Model A. It was the perfect ending to the day, and the perfect start to their new life together as husband and wife. B&G

Kristen Sam Kristen (Clark) and Sam Franklin | October 11, 2014 Rassie Wicker Park | Pinehurst | Meridith Macy

Kristen and Sam learned the importance of

meeting each other halfway early in their relationship. While Kristen lived in Aberdeen and Sam was living in Raleigh, the couple met in Sanford regularly for weeknight dinners and walks. On a trip to Pinehurst, Sam lured Kristen to a bench they had shared during many of those evenings and popped the question. The rest, as they say, is history. The venue was a no-brainer. In addition to being beautiful and affordable, Rassie Wicker Park was the site of Kristen and Sam’s first date, when the couple realized their shared passion for being outdoors. With winter on its way, the couple would likely have to wait a year to have the wedding they envisioned. However, a cancellation at their venue meant they could exchange vows sooner if they could plan their big day in a five-week whirlwind. Kristen and Sam’s shared sense of adventure took over and they seized the date. Kristen, whom Sam describes as a beautiful creative force, got to work creating hand-lettered India ink invitations,

&

Groom 2015

wooden signs and marquee letters spelling out the most important word of the day — love. As for the color scheme, Kristen went bold, ordering brightly colored sunglasses and assorted cloth napkins; she selected a wide array of bright zinnias for the ceremony and reception. In retrospect, the planning time crunch allowed Kristen to focus on the elements that were truly important to them as a couple, and pushed them to enlist the help of family and friends. Kristen’s parents set up the lighting, Sam’s cousin played acoustic guitar, and all the guests doubled as videographers by passing around a GoPro camera. As Sam’s uncle was officiating the service, rain started falling and everyone made a break for the woods. Instead of ruining their wedding, the weather seemed to bless it. Kristen’s favorite moment of the day was walking back onto the trails, half-married and completely soaked, surrounded by friends and family and seeing a rainbow in the sky above them. It was a perfect day, and Sam assures future grooms that the reality of being married is far better than planning one. B&G

Sean

Katie (Cunningham) and Sean Stout | June 28, 2014 Weymouth Center | Southern Pines | Sayer Photography

Katie and Sean don’t actually remember meet-

ing. They both grew up in Southern Pines, and “it just seemed like one day we woke up and knew each other,” says Katie. They became good friends when Sean drove Katie (and most of the neighborhood) to Pinecrest High School, but they didn’t start dating until after graduation. Katie does remember the morning Sean woke her for an early morning run on St. Patrick’s Day. She was reluctant until they were out on Dallas’ Katy Trail with the sun rising overhead. Typically packed, the trail was almost empty for the first mile. They stopped at their usual creek, and Sean talked for a while before getting down on one knee and shocking Katie with the ring he’d tucked into his running shorts. For Katie, the best part was being without a phone, giving them time to walk back alone and soak in the moment before calling everyone to share the news. Rain is always a concern for brides planning an outdoor wedding, but Katie relied on an old Southern tradition to keep

&

PS Bride

Groom 2015

it at bay: Bury a bottle of bourbon at the site and dig it up on the wedding day. (At the very least, the bourbon ensures the bride enjoys herself regardless of weather.) With Katie’s parents and godparents, the couple buried a bottle by the house at Weymouth Center, and at the first sign of raindrops, Katie’s godfather, Bill Hyman, came running with the shovel. One excavated bottle later, the clouds blew over and the reception got a little rowdier. While the bride and groom set a relaxed tone for the day, the heart of the ceremony was magical, in part because of the vows Sean and Katie wrote themselves. They love to challenge each other in every area of life. And with these words, they pledged to always remember they’re on the same team: Recognizing that the external conditions in life will not always be smooth, do you pledge to see all the challenging circumstances as just that — a challenge to help you grow, to accept yourselves and your relationship, and to generate compassion for each other? They absolutely do. B&G

Dean

Mollie (Bowness) and Dean Tempest | May 25, 2014 The Country Club of North Carolina | Pinehurst | inContrast Images

Dean and Mollie were in the right place at

the right time. Dean, originally from West Yorkshire, England, and Mollie, a Southern Pines native, both happened to be at a friend’s house party in New York. They were from different sides of the pond, but quickly realized they had more in common than not — including a keen sense of adventure. Living in London, the couple realized their big day was a rare opportunity to have all of their friends and family in one spot. With that in mind, they decided to plan several events over the course of five days, making their wedding feel like more of a festival. More than any one detail of their wedding day, Dean and Mollie will always cherish seeing their loved ones having fun getting to know each other. Both Dean and Mollie grew up in strong, close-knit families, so the choice to hold their ceremony at Mollie’s father’s house was easy. They don’t get back to North Carolina often, so it meant a lot to the couple to create such a strong memory

&

in Mollie’s hometown. As an international couple, Dean and Mollie wanted a wedding that was a true marriage of cultures. The Brits who attended were used to the tradition of wedding day toasts, not to giving speeches the night before at a rehearsal dinner. They wound up appreciating the American tradition, especially since it helped them relax on the big day. The speeches were still delivered in a full English manner. “You only have one chance to give a speech like that to all the people you love,” Dean advises. “Don’t be shy and don’t hold back.” For Mollie, the speeches are among her favorite memories from the week. Planning her wedding while abroad, Mollie quickly learned to rely on others to help with planning. She urges other brides to do the same — regardless of location. She also encourages future brides to not sweat the small stuff. Instead, she promises that once the big day arrives, everyone will be having too much fun to even notice. B&G
