Kristin Andrew Andrew and Kristin (Stewart) Congelli | July 07, 2012 The Pinehurst Resort | Pinehurst | Photographs by Michael Moss Photography

Kristin thought that she was going to the

beach to celebrate her birthday with friends Danielle and Eli and boyfriend Andrew (AJ). She found herself walking toward a path of tiki torches and a mound of sand with seashells spelling out, “Will You Marry Me?” Through her tears of joy, she said, “Yes.” An alumna of The O’Neal School, Kristin had always loved the beauty of the Pinehurst area. AJ has a passion for golf. The couple instantly fell in love with the Pinehurst Resort when they visited. So in the dream-come-true way of nuptials, they planned their summer wedding there. “We had the traditional customs one would expect at a Southern wedding ceremony and reception, but the look and feel I would say was more modern,” says Kristin. The color scheme was black and white with accents of the bride’s favorite hue, hot pink. The cake was white, decorated with a white damask design. “There were two layers of vanilla cake with buttercream filling,

16

one layer chocolate cake with peanut butter filling, one layer red velvet cake with cream cheese filling, and one layer carrot cake with cream cheese filling,” Kristin recalls. Each layer was decorated with black ribbon and a thin strand of diamonds. It was topped with a black and diamond monogram. There were more sweet treats at the candy bar. DJ Mike Morse provided the entertainment. “He was so much fun and the entertainment was exactly what we wanted,” says the bride. “The music ranged from oldies to current hip hop and all ages had the time of their lives.” The father and bride dance started out slow and turned into the Twist, at which the father of the bride is famously adept. The couple never made an official “exit.” The bride remembers, “We were having too much fun to stop celebrating and ‘exit.’” Her favorite moment from the day? “Seeing the look on AJ’s face as I walked down the aisle toward the man of my dreams.” And the groom’s? “Saying ‘I do.’” B&G

Susan

Ross and Susan (Oakley) Crawford | June 15, 2013 Pinehurst | Photographs by Matt McKenzie, McKenzie Photography

Susan and Ross met on Ross’s birthday.

They were drawn together by a mutual love of others and a desire to make the world better. Susan was attracted to Ross’s kindness and positive energy, Ross to Susan’s smile and genuine spirit. This match was meant to be. Two years later — almost to the day — they were married. The ceremony took place under a wrought iron arch of Carolina jasmine in Susan’s parents’ backyard on the fifth fairway of Pinehurst No. 2. It was at the ceremony that the groom’s favorite moment from that special day took place: “When Susan walked out of her parents’ house with her father during the processional.” White, gray, tan and Carolina blue were the colors of the day. Susan’s friend, Chrystal Blue, arranged the flowers for the ceremony. The bride wore a trumpet-style gown of Venetian lace, decorated with an oyster-shell-colored sash and the bride’s own magnolia blossom. For her bridal jewelry Susan redesigned her maternal grandmother’s three-stone wedding ring into a diamond and pearl pendant with earrings. Something blue? Carolina blue nail polish.

20

The bride and groom traveled to the reception by horse and carriage. The reception took place at the Pinehurst Resort Clubhouse Grand Ballroom, overlooking the eighteenth green of Pinehurst No. 2. During cocktail hour guests nibbled on fried catfish sliders, pulled pork mac and cheese, chicken and waffles, pimento cheese silver dollar biscuits, and deviled eggs. “Bride’s favorites to cook and groom favorites to eat!” says Susan. There was sumptuous Southern fare at dinner too, served “family style” in heirloom dishes passed around the tables. The cake was topped with “Birds of a Feather,” bride and groom look-alike birds handmade in Australia. Guests danced into the night to Motown, beach music and Top Forty hits. Post reception, the party continued at the bride’s parents’ house, the ceremony site transformed by Chrystal into a Scottish pub with tables covered in the Crawford family tartan plaid. Guests talked over brandy and cigars into the early hours of the morning by the outdoor fireplace. Truly a perfect celebration, a wedding to remember forever. B&G

Sarah

Brent

Brent and Sarah (Cuff) Young | September 7, 2013 Culdee Presbyterian Church | West End | Photographs by Gambol Photography, LLC

Sarah and Brent met the week before

classes began their freshman year at UNC-Chapel Hill. They were introduced by their mutual friend, Elizabeth. “The first thing I remember about Brent is his infectious laugh, it’s the best!” says Sarah. “He has such a great sense of humor and always keeps me laughing.” “Besides the fact that she was the most beautiful girl I’d ever seen, what attracted me to Sarah was her personality,” says Brent. “She’s a smart, positive girl who has always been there to listen and is my best friend.” They were married at Culdee Presbyterian Church. “This is the church I grew up in, as well as my mother and grandmother,” says Sarah. “I couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else.” It was a traditional wedding with a timeless look. The color scheme was neutral, primarily white and gold. Flowers were white, with small touches of greenery. “We actually did the majority of the floral arrangements ourselves!” Sarah recalls, “We used white hydrangeas, white garden roses, gladiolus and calla lilies for the arrangements and bouquets.”

24

The bride wore a strapless gown with a sweetheart neckline. Her “something borrowed” was her mother-inlaw’s cathedral length lace veil that she had worn on her own wedding day. Sarah’s father passed away while she was in college, so her older brothers stood in for the traditional father of the bride duties. “My oldest brother, John David, walked me down the aisle and my middle brother, Will, danced with me for the father-daughter dance. Will and I danced to ‘What a Wonderful World’ by Louis Armstrong, the same song my mother danced to with both of my brothers at their weddings.” The band “The Business” had the party on the dance floor throughout the reception. At the couple’s request they had even learned three special dance songs not on their initial playlist. Videographer Dart McAdoo captured the essence of the whole wedding weekend. “Every time we watch our wedding video we are truly able to relive our entire wedding!” say the couple. Looking back, would Brent and Sarah have done anything differently? “Not a thing. Our wedding was perfect!” B&G

Ashley

Casey

Casey and Ashley (Cole) Holderfield | September 28, 2013 Weymouth | Southern Pines | Photographs by Brody Frye, Sweet T Productions

Soulmates Ashley and Casey

had been dating since high school when they got engaged at the Grove Park Inn, Asheville, after more than a decade together. As they are both avid walkers who grew up in Moore County and now live in downtown Southern Pines, the venue for their wedding was a foregone conclusion: It had to be Weymouth. How to deal with the possibility of rain at their outdoor wedding? Ashley and Casey followed an old wives’ tale: “We buried a bottle of Maker’s Mark in the gardens months before the wedding to hold off any possibility of raindrops,” Ashley recalls. “It didn’t hurt either for Casey and his groomsmen to dig it up the day of the wedding and enjoy a sip or two before the festivities began.” And what festivities they were, all reflecting the bride and groom’s personalities. In the first of the many non-traditional twists in the evening, Ashley chose to walk down the aisle with Casey, a surprise they kept through all the planning and rehearsals. “We felt it represented how bonded and united as

28

a couple we are.” Indeed, it was the bride’s favorite moment: “Feeling like you’re on cloud nine and knowing, ‘I am about to marry the man of my dreams.’” Casey chose a wood ring over the traditional metal, and the ceremony was customized with personal vows and a Native American hand-tying demonstration. A black and white color scheme highlighted the chic modern theme. Bouquets were tied with ribbon. An array of flowers contrasted with the bride’s favorite succulents. Food was vegetarian. “We wanted all of our friends and family to enjoy our cuisine for a night and it was a big reflection of who we are and our lifestyle,” says Ashley. Even dedicated carnivores were intrigued by the vegetarian menu and a variety of vegan desserts, all bite-sized to allow for taste-testing. Music was central to the evening. The Beatles, Bruno Mars and Florence and the Machine were featured in the ceremony. Erik Smallwood Duo entertained guests through cocktail hour, then King Curtiss Carpenter had everyone dancing the night away until Ashley and Casey’s sparkler sendoff. B&G

Lindsey

Jeremy and Lindsey (Putz) Lashmit | September 28, 2013 Fox Point Farm | Southern Pines | Photographs by Christi Ramsey, NCR Photography

Lindsey was so surprised by Jeremy’s proposal

that she still hasn’t said yes. Words clearly weren’t necessary that day — the couple were married at a fall ceremony in Southern Pines a little over a year later. Lindsey grew up in Southern Pines, and for U.S. Army medic Jeremy Lashmit, Moore County “became my home after I found the love of my life.” Their wedding style was Southern vintage, and this carried through to the traditional Southern hospitality. No detail was overlooked. Lindsey and Jeremy were involved in every aspect of the planning. “We made the seating, the tablecloths, the guest favors, the guest book, the counterpieces, the signature drink.” After so many months spent creating the perfect day, the couple have started a wedding rental business, Carolina Rustic Rentals, to share their work with other area couples. “We used mason jars for everything,” they recall. The color scheme was beige and ivory, “with a touch of red to represent Jeremy’s favorite team.” Hay bales, red mums and white

32

pumpkins gave a rustic Southern feel, with wood slabs on tables and hand-stitched burlap overlay. The cake, designed to look like Lindsey’s favorite tree, a birch, was made as a gift by bridesmaid Amber Pate. The couple’s initials were carved into the bark. Cowboy boots and hats abounded. Maid of honor, bridesmaids and groomsmen all wore boots. The blue soles of the bridal boots were Lindsey’s “something blue.” Lindsey’s favorite moment from the day: “Walking toward Jeremy down the aisle. There were nearly 150 people around and I didn’t notice anyone else.” Jeremy’s? “When Lindsey walked out of the barn and it was the first time I saw her in her wedding dress. Luckily everyone had eyes on her so nobody saw me shed a few tears.” The Lashmits’ wedding day cocktail: The Sweet South 1 shot vodka Half sweet tea Half lemonade Splash of peach schnapps Garnished with a peach wedge. Fernando

Fernando and Mindy (Morgan) Mejia | September 28, 2013 Laurinburg Presbyterian Church | Laurinburg | Photographs by Whitebox Photo

“We just had that ‘spark’ from the moment I

met him,” says Mindy of her groom, Fernando. They met in August, 2008, in Fernando’s hometown of Brasilito, Costa Rica, when Mindy was on vacation with a friend. Mindy and Fernando were married in fall, 2013, at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church. Although the groom’s family was miles away and unable to attend, they were still able to join in the service. The minister allowed a laptop at the front of the sanctuary, which streamed the ceremony to family and friends via Skype. Parts of the ceremony were in English and in Spanish. As photographer and videographer with their company, New Morning Weddings, the couple have had plenty of wedding experience. Fernando’s friend, Corey, was best man; Mindy’s sister, Melody, maid of honor. Melody’s 2-month-old daughter, Anna, Mindy’s niece, was the honorary flower girl. Flowers were pink and white, the color theme baby blue, white and pink. The dress was “a mixture of all I love: chiffon,

36

lace and a little bling.” The bride wore diamonds, her “something borrowed”: her great-grandmother’s diamond bracelet, borrowed from Mindy’s mother. After the ceremony there was a group photograph of all 150 people at the wedding. The reception was held at the King Fisher Society, with a boat ride on the lake adding to the festivities. Mindy recalls, “We were able to create such a fun and unique experience for our guests. From the boat ride to the beautiful tent area to the fire pit to the nice pavilion.” Ray Codrington’s Jazz Trio played through cocktail hour and dinner, reflecting the couple’s love of jazz. After dinner everyone rocked to the sound of Party Tyme DJ. The partying went on late. Guests gathered round the fire pit and roasted marshmallows. The honeymoon took the travel-loving couple to St. Thomas. “Take a honeymoon after your wedding,” advises Mindy. “ Although you will love every minute of it, afterward you will want to just relax and enjoy time with your husband.” B&G

Heather

Jim

Jim and Heather (Leonard) Peay | June 29, 2013 Chef Warren’s | Southern Pines | Photographs by Tamtopia Photography

Jim and Heather met in 2008 at Fort Bragg,

where Heather had just started working and army officer Jim had been stationed for several years. “I couldn’t shake him. When we were together it felt right,” says Heather. “He made me a better person. Our family seamlessly came together, like this was how things were supposed to be.” “She is funny and smart,” says Jim of Heather. “Stern yet gentle. Absolutely beautiful. A kind and good person. She makes me laugh. There is no one else I want to spend my time with.” Family is of paramount importance to the couple. They decided that they wanted a small wedding. Both had been married before and they have four children between them. “All live with us, under one roof, it’s full of crazy,” says Heather. “We are very happy and make each other very happy.” They found just the right place to be married — one of their favorite restaurants in town: “We were looking for an intimate venue that we could spend time with our family and conduct

40

both the service and reception. Chef Warren’s was one of the first places we had gone to dinner and we absolutely loved it.” The service was conducted by the Chaplain from Jim’s unit on Fort Bragg. The couple’s children stood around them as they exchanged their vows. The bride wore an ivory lace dress with champagne underlay. The color scheme was ivory and deep water blue to match the hydrangeas arranged by Heather, with the help of her cousin Rebecca. They had taken some wedding photographs the night before the ceremony, at Weymouth. On the day of the wedding there had to be photographs at the train station, a treasured place to the couple, who enjoy spending time there. “It has always been ‘our’ spot,” says Jim. A perfect day. “Keep it simple,” advises Heather. “Simplicity is so often over-looked and under-appreciated. Simplicity is the key to happiness.” B&G

Samantha

Justin

Justin and Samantha (Hooper) Reid | October 26, 2013 The Village Chapel | Pinehurst | Photographs by Tim Sayer, Sayer Photography

Bride Samantha spent many happy child-

hood times at her grandparents’ home at CCNC. So when she and fellow Boston sports fan Justin got engaged, it was the pick of reception venues for their special day. “I knew going into this that we were getting married at my grandparents’ home, and I wanted the wedding to reflect their classy, traditional, timeless, elegant personalities and styles,” says Samantha. “We were able to show these traits through my dress, which was simple, yet timeless and elegant, through the cake and the flowers and through the ceremony.” Samantha found her perfect dress in her parents’ home state of Massachusetts. She and Justin live in Greenville, South Carolina. There, she chose the bridesmaids’ dresses at Bella Bridesmaids. The color? Aubergine, to fit in with the woodsy, pine cone, natural theme. The bride gave her bridesmaids Swarovski necklaces with purple crystals. “My beautiful bridesmaids deserved something like that.” The groomsmen received cufflinks with their last name initial engraved on them.

44

Flowers tied in with the theme and added color. “They were beautiful,” recalls Samantha’s mother, Lynn Hooper. The cake had a layer of strawberry shortcake and a layer of lemon. The bride and groom layer was mocha. Maid of honor Lindsey Fera, Samantha’s best friend since playgroup, sang the Lord’s Prayer at the service. She and her fiancé also sang Josh Groban’s “The Prayer.” Family photographs decorated the reception. There were two signature cocktails: the Boston and the Carolina. Guests signed rocks instead of a book. Justin and Samantha keep those special rocks in a vase at their home so they can see them every night. The bride and her father danced to a mix of “I Loved Her First” and “Scarlet Ribbons,” “the song my dad sang to me as a baby and young girl. When we were dancing, he sang it to me, probably for the last time, and I will never forget that moment.” Samantha and Justin wouldn’t change a thing about their wedding. “There was nothing that wasn’t us from beginning to end. Nothing over the top, just simple and fun.” B&G

Centerpiece Options

abound for couples tying the knot

Weddings may be characterized as a dozen little details coming together to form one big celebration.

• Beads and baubles: Filling a vase or low-profile glass bowl with beads, shells, rocks or crystals is an easy way to dress up a table. Consider pairing these decorative beads with candles to have a visually appealing design.

Reception centerpieces are one of those important details. Couples frequently opt for floral centerpieces because of the versatility of flowers and the myriad color combinations that are available. But couples should not limit themselves to a floral centerpiece; they can explore a variety of centerpiece options before choosing the one for them. • Candles: Inexpensive and beautiful, candles impart a subtle glow to a space. Candles of varying heights will cast light on the table and make the reception room look and feel more intimate. Place candles on a mirror or silver cake serving platter so that the light of the flames will reflect and disperse even more. • Fruit: Pieces of fruit, such as lemons, limes, apples and oranges, can be used as a cost-friendly centerpiece. Whether placed in a basket or clear vase, the colors of fresh fruit can be vibrant and eye-catching. Afterward, the fruit can be brought home and eaten to limit waste.

Edible ideas: Centerpieces that double as favors cut down on the expense and amount of work that go into idea creation. A basket with tulle-wrapped Jordan almonds or decorative boxes of cookies stacked in the center of the table will look attractive and then can be taken home by guests. Themed objects: Birdhouses, watering cans, teapots, a small birdcage, gourds or other items that fit with the theme of a wedding can work well as centerpieces.

**

** **

• Balloons: Don’t underestimate the power of a billowing bouquet of balloons in the center of a table. Relatively lowpriced when compared to flowers, balloons are easy to set up and will quickly fill a space. • Wildflowers: Rather than centerpieces full of exotic flowers, do-it-yourself couples can place whimsical bunches of wildflowers and fresh herbs into vases on each table.
