Our thesi s for a N ew Monumental i ty to re p l a c e th e Tra d i t i onal Monumental i ty of the past begi ns b y fo c u s i n g o n u ti l i z i n g i nnovati ons i n green technol ogi es and a d a p ti v e re u s e o f s tru ctures to j ump start new green i ndustri es. Ou r p ro p o s a l w i l l s e e the abandoned P ackard A utomoti ve P l ant tra n s fo rm e d i n to a c a m p us that houses the H ydro-S ource, a factory th a t u s e s g re e n n e w t echnol ogi es to process ambi ent ai r i n the a tmo s p h e re to g e n e ra t e cl ean dri nki ng w ater. Thi s w ater i s then d i s tri b u te d fo r u s e th r oughout our si te and the ci ty of D etroi t. T h ro u g h a d a p ti v e re u se, thi s proj ect can make use of exi sti ng i n fra s tru c tu re to s u s ta i nabl y create new i nhabi tabl e spaces. A l ong w i th th e a d d i ti o n o f th e f actory, a l i ght rai l has been added to provi de p u b l i c c o m m u ti n g o p ti o ns to and from our si te. Most of the exi sti ng s tru c tu re i s l e ft i n ta c t a nd re-purposed as offi ce space and mi xed u s e p u rp o s e s s u c h a s commerci al uses and restaurants. P aths w e re c re a te d th ro u g h out the si te to i mprove ci rcul ati on. A rti sti c pi eces are scattered and di spl ayed al ong these paths to create an outdoor museum focused on hi ghl i ghti ng pi eces of D etroi t’s past. We refurbi shed the exi sti ng facade to mai ntai n the H eri tage of the factory and hi ghl i ght the hi story of the si te as an i mportant pl ayer i n the ri se and fal l D etroi t. The fi nal product of thi s proj ect hopes to show a combi nati on of the opti mi sti c future of D etroi t w hi l e al so honori ng and acknow l edgi ng the hi story of the si te. T h i s p ro j e c t fo c u s e d o n taki ng the exi sti ng outdated B oone Muni ci pal A i rp o rt a n d p ro p o s i n g a revi tal i zati on of the si te through means o f i n c o rp o ra ti n g th e a rchi tecture i nto the l andscape of the si te. In i ti a l l y, th e e n ti re ty o f the si te sat on fl at l and. We managed to c re a te a l a n d s c a p e w i thi n the archi tecture i tsel f that seaml essl y fl o w s i n to th e g ro u n d w i th l arge steel beams and green roofs. T h e s l o p i n g ro o fs w o u l d al so act as w ater channel s to bri ng w ater d o w n i n to re te n ti o n p o nds that w oul d gather the rai n w ater, fi l ter i t, a n d b e u s e d fo r c l e a ni ng and pl umbi ng w ater w i thi n the faci l i ty. Ou r p ro p o s e d re n e w a l strategy consi sted of roughl y 10,000 sq. ft of hi l l s and w ater channel s to be used for a drone trai ni ng/obstacl e course. These drones w oul d serve the needs of the mi l i tary base nearby, l ocal farmers, del i very systems, as w el l as recreati onal or competi ti ve use. Our proposal al so i ncl uded a l arge basement to be used for addi ti onal pl ane storage and mechani cs cl asses for the publ i c. Thi s proj ect w as nomi nated for the R i chard F. C o m m i s s i o n e d b y R e i man Gardens for thei r spri ng 2018 E xhi bi t, thi s project was designed and built by a group of 72 students with our studio p ro fe s s o rs g u i d i n g u s . The i nstal l ati on features 2 pri mary functi ons: l e i s u re s p a c e s w i th h a mmocks and a vi sual art el ement w here tre a te d p l a s ti c p a n e l s refract l i ght i nto beauti ful i ri descent col ors. T h e i n s ta l l a ti o n c o n s i sts of a w i ndi ng path of tri angul ar modul es ma d e fro m 4 x 4 ti mb e r. The ti mber modul es w ere connected by c u s to m-d e s i g n e d s te e l “hubs”. D ue to how the tri angul ar modul es w e re a rra n g e d , e a c h s t eel hub had to be uni que. These tri angul ar mo d u l e s a re th e n i n fil l ed w i th ei ther a hand-w oven hammock to re l a x i n o r i ri d e s c e nt panel s that beauti ful l y refract l i ght. My pri mary responsi bi l i ti es on thi s proj ect i ncl uded: Worki ng w i th smal l er teams to create the general concept for the i nstal l ati on, bui l di ng the 3D model , from w hi ch constructi on draw i ngs w oul d be extracted from, hel pi ng desi gn and model the custom hubs that connect al l the ti mber modul es, and ai di ng the constructi on team as needed. The i nstal l ati on compl eted constructi on i n A pri l 2018. It can sti l l be seen at R ei man Gardens today. The budget w e w ere gi ven for the proj ect w as $20,000. Over ti me, as more l ayers of spol i a are a d d e d to a b u i l d i n g , t he hi story and story of a bui l di ng can be re a d j u s t fro m i ts fa çade. Our proj ect, S pol i a Moderna, i s a c o n te m p o ra ry a p p ro a c h to desi gn that emphasi zes the synthesi s of o l d a n d n e w th ro u g h s p ati al desi gn and materi al i ty of the façade. We b e g a n th e d e s i g n p ro cess by l ooki ng at the hi story of our si te. One o f th e mo s t s i g n i fi c a n t thi ngs w e noti ced w as the Torl eone. It serves as a n o d e fo r th e n e i g h b o rh ood and, i n the past, had i nformal settl ements s p ro u t u p a l l a ro u n d i t. O ur proj ect uses the Torl eone as the pri mary n o d e i n w h i c h w e d e s i gned around. The form of the proj ect w as s h a p e d to fra m e v i e w s and di rect ci rcul ati on tow ards the Torl eone. T h e s e c o n d a ry fa c to r g ui di ng our proj ect w as the i dea of the R oman p i a z z a a n d c o u rty a rd . We i denti fi ed the exi sti ng structures on the si te, re -p u rp o s e d th e m, a n d used them as nodes to bui l d open courtyards a ro u n d . T h e s e c o u rty a rds serve as gatheri ng spaces for resi dents a n d th e p u b l i c a l i k e . T h e massi ng of our proj ect w as desi gned around th e s e v o i d s th a t w e c onstructed around the exi sti ng structures. T h e u rb a n e d g e s o f o u r bui l di ng frame and create the courtyard.
