It’s so wonderful that we’ve gotten as far as we have, and we owe it all to you, our loving fans and supporters. Thank you so much for continuing to support us in our endeavors. In this issue, we’ve decided to combine our love of rock and roll, with our love of fashion. I’d like to send out a special thanks to the Red Leaf Grill & Lounge for letting us use their venue for this shoot. Their hospitality was unmatched, and their homemade chips & salsa were delicious. Thanks to them as well, for the use of some of their instruments. Also to Dustin Hurley for bringing a lot of his own for us to use. This was such a fun issue to shoot, probably one of my personal favorites yet. Everyone had a great time, and we got some pretty wonderful shots from it. Stay beautiful, stay you!

Wearing a tight skirt with a loose top (like a nice big cozy sweater) can make you look sweet and sexy. The sweater is super comfy and the skirt gives it a little minx. Since its still winter and we’re still getting those cold breezes, instead of putting on a skirt, put some leggings on. These are tight but they are also super comfy. Interview wit h
Brandon Keir PB: What made you decide to get into designing? BK: I’ve always been into all kinds of music and fashion comes hand in hand with music. In 2008 I developed a new found love for Lady Gaga – who we all know has an extravagant taste for fashion. After getting into Lady Gaga a large amount I found Alexander McQueen. They are both the reason I found my talent and are both what made me follow my dreams to become a designer. PB: What is it about Fashion that you love? Why do you want to work in this industry? BK: I love the type of fashion where someone can look at another person and in their mind say “I want to know them – I need to talk to them now!” Fashion is a way of self-expression and how someone is feeling – and that is why I want to work in the industry because it’s a way that I express myself through my design. PB: Where did this particular style come from? BK: The style that my CHAIN REACTION collection had come from a combination of Harajuku street style infused with NYC street style. It was also very inspired by the KPOP music scene specifically girlgroup 2NE1.
32
PB: Your line was featured in the recent [PHASE] emerging designer showcase. How did you feel, and can you describe the whole experience? BK: Well the experience…was most definitely an experience. Getting my models ready to walk the runway for my set was probably the most stressful – no models no show. The models I had been using for my show had been used in the set previous to mine. I was given my queue to start my set and I have 4 of 7 models ready. I was running around with my Jeffrey Campbell Lita’s on speed dressing models and getting them back in line from backstage. The moment my runway music came on I was literally shaking. During my show hearing my music, applause and screams as my clothing walked down the runway was so surreal. It didn’t feel real – I walked out at the end of my show for the designer walk and almost cried. Until someone designs a collection and spends 9 months bringing it to life – they will never know the AMAZING feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction of having that job. I know this job is for me especially because when I work it doesn’t feel like a job. PB: Who is your biggest inspiration? BK: My biggest inspiration from day to day life is the same inspiration I have for design – Lady Gaga & Alexander McQueen. My other biggest inspiration is really the music industry. In my future I’m really going to focus on working with singers in the music industry to create performance wear as well as promo shot looks. There are another few artists that come to mind when asked about inspiration: Taylor Momsen, Natalia Kills and Kerli (whom I have already worked with) PB: I recently read that you relocated to Toronto. Tell me about that. What made you decide to make that move? What are your plans? Yes, I’m finally back in Toronto where I belong! I moved here because I’m a big city boy. I came to further my career and experience in the industry. Toronto has many more opportunities than Halifax and I strongly suggest if you would like to go further with yourself to relocate to Toronto – It’s an amazing city. While here I plan to work on a new collection and find my true aesthetic to create a strong brand.
34
PB: Who is your favorite designer and why? BK: Alexander McQueen (The Late) I have read books about his design process and how he did what he did. The way he incorporated technology into his runway as well as his design (Notably: The Kate Moss spray paint dress show, and the human chess board) I just love every single thing about him and his brand - the way that when you see his pieces you automatically know that it’s MCQUEEN and that is how I want to be known. I would also like to add that I find that Sarah Burton is doing a great job with keeping the brand alive. PB: If you could have any celebrity wear your clothing, who would it be? BK: Lady Gaga. It’s one of my top career goals to dress her in a Brandon Keir original. I live for everything she is about; being yourself no matter what anyone says and wearing whatever the hell you want. To have such a strong female figure and advocate for the LGBT community would be EVERYTHING to me. She is the reason I’m where I am today. She helped me find the true me and gave me confidence to follow my dreams no matter what anyone said. PB: What can we expect from you as a designer in the upcoming months? BK: You expect a few projects from me in the future as a designer. I’m currently working with singer Mxii (https://www.facebook.com/ LoveMoxiie) to create a customer outfit. I’ll also working on a photo series that will portray my past, present & future which will feature original designs from my brand and Marianna Harutunian designer jewellery. Thank you so much to local designer Brandon Keir for giving us this exclusive interview! We can’t wait to see what this young fashion designer has in store for us in his very bright future!

Curls & Waves
BY CHRISTINA MURRAY
Curls and waves can be the perfect hairstyles for any occasion. You can dress them up or dress them down and take them from day to night in a snap. Curls or waves can also be a great solution for those with naturally curly, thick and/or frizzy hair. The curls or waves will give a more controlled look to hair that won’t stay straight all day.
length of hair will allow. If you have shorter hair you may have to use a smaller iron and brush out or tease your curls to make them appear larger.
In order to achieve your curly look, you should first learn how to properly use a curling iron. From there, you can adjust the method for whatever style you choose. By starting with tighter curls, you can easily achieve a wavy style.
You can also tease sections at the top of your hair. Make sure not to tease the outer layer though.
When you’ve finished curling and spraying your hair, run your fingers through the curls to loosen them up.
Beach Waves: Waves can be achieved in several ways. For a no heat solution, tie your hair into fishtail braids after Bouncy Curls: a shower and allow them to dry that way. Without eyebrows, we would look absurdly primitive and would not have what is widely regarded as one of the best features to frame a face. There have been photo-manipulated images of celebrities without eyebrows and because we are used to seeing people with eyebrows on their face our minds drift into thinking that they look sickly, and that it is not quite right.
The Perfect Brow EYEBROW DISASTER?!
BY ALEXANDRA MUTCH
The facts are these: not many people are used to seeing others walking around without eyebrows. While this is true, some of us aren’t gifted with natural brows that we are happy with. There are numerous options for those with brows that need a little bit of manipulating, or for those who have thin eyebrows that want to grow them out. If you have eyebrow pencils, make sure that they aren’t too light or too dark for your completion and that you do not have a black pencil if you are a blonde (I have seen this cardinal sin committed too many a time) line the underneath of your brow, starting from the front of the brow and go from light to dark as you approach the arches. The arch is where the emphasis of the eyebrow is so color slightly more in this area, and if you need to add an arch, add one subtly above where the arch should be (about ¾’s of the way through the brow). There are stencils that you can print on the web, and if you have bought something that came in plastic packaging, you can cut yourself out a stencil using a either guide from the internet or by creating your own ideal brow. Some have simply over-tweezed or possibly had their eyebrows waxed too thin for their faces. Let them grow for several weeks. This can be challenging since they have to really go wild for a few weeks, although you can maintain the centers of your brow if you have a tendency to grow a monobrow. After letting them grow wild, you should get a feel of how your eyebrows grow in and get a general idea of how to best shape them for your face. ‘Power brows’ are very in style right now so having brows on the slightly thicker side is considered very desirable. There are many different brow shapes in this world, it is a matter of looking around, using your resources and finding the best brow fit for you. Then you can step out and rock it in confidence knowing that you have put your best brow forward and with that put together much more polished looks.

Let’s face it, a first impression is important and it’s hard to change an opinion formed from that first impression. What makes a good first impression? A pearly white smile of course. Don’t have the time or the money for expensive orthodontic procedures? Why not use some simple household items to achieve similar results? Hydrogen Peroxide: Found in your medicine cabinet, this substance is like a magic eraser for any yellow spots or stains on your teeth. Just pour a little bit on your toothbrush, but make sure you use a little water as well. Brush your teeth with toothpaste after to get rid of the taste (don’t worry it doesn’t taste too bad, just a little after taste, the toothpaste will give you fresh breath to go with your white smile anyway). Baking Soda: This at home teeth whitener can be found in your fridge or cupboards. Used similarly to peroxide, baking soda will scrub away any stains on your teeth. The powder will act as an exfoliator giving your teeth a little shine. Again, just dip your toothbrush in a little baking soda, add water, and brush away. Following with toothpaste or mouthwash is a good idea here too. Five Minute Whitening gel: You can come across this at random department stores and often on sale. This is just a higher concentration of peroxide, similar to what’s found in whitening strips. We were lucky enough to find a trial size bottle. Even a small bottle will go a long way you only need to use it once a week, mixed in with your regular tooth care and whitening routine to notice results. For this one, just follow the package directions. Whitening Strips or trays: One of the obvious at home whitening solutions, whitening strips will get results after just one use. No name brand strips and trays work just as good as the name brand ones! Again, follow package directions! You may also want to watch what you’re eating if you have a special occasion coming up. Coffee, wine and smoking can leave stains on your teeth. However, foods that need to be chewed a lot, like carrots, help whiten teeth by acting as a natural exfoliator. Drinking from a straw may also help keep teeth looking their best because your teeth won’t be soaking in the liquid. Mix up your routine and figure out which solutions work best for you. A combination of several may work best for you.

Your Hair vs. Your Complexion BY: CHRISTINA MURRAY
Changing your hair colour can be invigorating and exciting, but it can also be a scary endeavor if you’re trying a colour for the first time. I recently made a long anticipated, drastic change to my hair colour, but before I did, I made sure to get all my facts straight. I learned some pretty interesting things that I would have never thought of prior to all this difficult research (because spending a Saturday reading Cosmo in your PJ’s is tough work). And just because I love PB readers so much, I’m going to share the highlights with you! One of the most important things to consider when changing your hair colour is your skin tone. Not sure if you have a warm or cool skin tone? If your skin has yellow undertones, it’s warm. If it has blue undertones, it’s cool. Choose the wrong colour for your hair and you may look like a freakazoid from the future; choose the right colour for your hair and nobody will be able to ignore your luscious locks! DARK SKIN Let’s start with darker skin tones. Ladies with dark skin, you are lucky because you have a variety of choices in colour! As long as your hair is slightly darker or lighter then your skin, your facial features will pop and you’ll be stunning as always. Right now, vibrant reds and light browns are in. Make your pick and colour away! TAN-MEDIUM DARK SKIN Brown and olive skin tones can come in many shades, some on the cooler end and some on the warmer end. Regardless of the tone of your brown or olive skin, darker colours will always tend to suit
you, so if you’re thinking a darker colour, don’t be shy! This includes a darker blonde or red. If your skin has a warm tone, stay with a warmer hair colour. Examples are golden blonde, chocolate brown or a copper colour. Deep reds also compliment warm skin tones. A tip when going lighter is to leave your roots dark or natural. This will allow you to go a lighter colour without washing out your features. Celebrities like Beyoncé (and myself...) do this. If your skin is cooler, try going for a blue black, but as I said, most darker colours will work well with your skin. LIGHT SKIN Again, the warm or cool tone of your skin should help guide you in choosing your hair colour. Those with warm skin tones should go for colours like golden blonde, auburn or golden blonde. Those with cool skin tones should go for colours like strawberry blonde or platinum. Blue black also goes well with an olive skin tone, as do violets and dark coppers. Now that you’ve got all the secrets to choosing your perfect hair colour right in front of you, feel confident in your ability to choose a new colour! Maybe its one you’ve always wanted to try or maybe it’s a colour you just thought about now, but as long as you follow the guidelines, the colour will look good on you. And hey, if you don’t like it, try a new one next time!

FRESH ON THE SCENE, ERICA CHEVARIE IS TAKING THE MODELLING WORLD BY STORM! Confidence is something that comes from within, and when you’re lucky enough to obtain it, you radiate positivity and happiness. My adventure of modelling started in December 2013, as soon as I stepped in front of the lens I felt shocked at how much I enjoyed it. I’ve struggled with self-confidence for a long time, I had problems with my weight and it was something that brought me down, yet when I get ready for a photo shoot I can’t help but feel beautiful and thankful that people want to photograph me. I never would’ve imagined this experience before, the fun I have and the amazing people I’ve met make modelling not only a confidence-booster, but an amazing hobby I’m thankful I have the chance to do. I’m looking forward to building my portfolio and hopefully signing with an agency in the near future!

Potassium Iodide Deficiency and Pregnancy According to a study published in the Journal for Women’s Health in January of this year, pregnant women are at a substantially higher risk of potassium iodine deficiency. It seems that pregnant women do not absorb potassium iodide as easily and this winds up translating to a deficiency in most cases. The dangers here are the damaging of health for both the mother and the fetus. In this study, which included 364, pregnant women, 80% of those who did not receive supplementation during pregnancy a potassium iodide were found to be deficient. This is quite a significant an alarming number. Understand the potassium iodide is responsible for the development and optimization of far more than just the thyroid the human body. The kidneys, the spleen, the liver and the skin are all dependent on potassium iodide in a deficiency during pregnancy could very well effect the health of the unborn baby. I would recommend that every pregnant woman supplement with one potassium iodide a.k.a. kalium iodatum 6X tablet for every 50 pounds of body weight, 2 times per day, during pregnancy to reduce the risk of provoking damaging health issues for both mother and baby.

I was referred to Tim’s website in 2011 when my son was diagnosed pneumonia three times in one winter. Tim created a specialty formula for lung health and general immune strength. We noticed a difference right away. I gave my son Tim’s salts for a year. His lungs are clear and healthy to this day. Tim also treated me for several deficiencies (after a facial analysis) and a thyroid problem. His salts brought my high thyroid levels back to normal (blood tests done here). I am now treatment free and my thyroid functions normally. I value Tim’s thoughts and advice, trust his judgment, and appreciate the time and energy he gives to us all, freely and with care. -Elizabethe HM I met Tim in August of 2011. I have arthritis and was on 3 strong medications (Prednisone, Methotrexate, Plaquinil and Aleve for pain) that were still not helping me. With those medications, I suffered from liver damage, kidney damage and also was risking of losing eye sight (one of the side effects of Plaquinil was retinal detachment). I came to my rheumatologist’s office crying in pain and all she did was suggest we add a medication, that was “being tested.” I had Tim analyze my face and he recommended quite a few tissue salts for which I had deficiencies, instructed me to analyze my eating habits and also incorporate balance testing into everything I put into my body. I started the tissue salts around September of 2011 and over the next few months I started feeling so much better and was able to wean myself of ALL medications!!!! Since January of 2012, I have been absolutely medication free and pain free! I know my kidneys and liver rehabilitated and are working optimally after getting on the combo organotherapy, with adrenal and liver support. I have also done a liver detoxification with liver detox formula twice and this was confirmed by my liver spots on the face fading. If it wasn’t for Tim and his salts, I don’t know where I would be. I am beyond grateful and blessed to be Tim’s friend and have access to his salts!!!! -Tatyana

Dear John, My current boyfriend wasn’t exactly single when we got together, he was in a long term relationship and I was what you could call “the other woman” – everything has been going good, but lately I can’t shake this feeling that since he cheated to be with me... he might cheat on me… am I crazy, or is this something that could or is happening to me? -Sleepless in Shediac Dear Shediac, You are not going to like what I have to tell you, but I’d like to give you the benefit of the doubt you were smart enough to kind of know the answer before you wrote into me. I’m going to put this out there to all of the Ladies who have been “the other woman” before they were “the one” – It’s like this… You’re all really nothing more than the long term flavour of the week. The guy your with loves the new things in life (and consequently in love) – and will have the tendency to get bored of you sooner or later. He is going to tell you he loves you, and he is going to be the perfect dream man for a little while, and then he is going to get distant, he is going to be moody as can be, and he is going to start seeing a new woman. (Usually younger, or stereotypically prettier than you think you are.) – Then he is going to start pushing you away and making you think you don’t love him so that you either A) – break up with him, leaving him guilt free to move on with the new lady friend in his life, or B) Become so miserable, stressed out by his behaviour, and generally unhappy, that he has an excuse to leave you that makes his conscience feel better about itself. “I left her because she was mean, not because I was railing the nanny”. I know this sounds extremely harsh, but it is reality. And Your Dearest John doesn’t feel like you should ever be lied to. The fact of the matter is, if your beau is a cheater – it isn’t going to change, ever – and he will cheat on you. Seriously. I mean it. . But I need to tell you something. No matter how amazing, loving, or perfect a guy is, if you are at anytime “the other lady” – the guy is a 64

By John Smith douche. As a lady – you should demand a certain amount of respect, not to mention romance and affection – You deserve to be the ONLY woman, in your man’s life, all of the time. Everything about you is beautiful, strong, delicate and perfect just the way it is, I recommend finding the type of man who will want you, only you, and only ever you. And not the you that allows him to penetrate (I know! Not a good enough reason to use the word penetrate, but it beat out some of the alternatives!!) you on alternating weekends while his wife is out of town! Real love is never a split decision. I hope this helps you with your sleepless nights, I wish you and all ladies going through this issue the best in your future romances. As always, yours truthfully, Dear John.

Sexcapades!
By: Robyn Richard
Where are the most daring places that you readers have had sex? Because we all would really like to know where people have gotten it on and how risky some people really are. Sometimes having sex in daring places can make things more interesting. And trust me some of these people’s stories are definitely an interesting read. -In a car parked in a field so it was wide open space, yet the field was empty, it just felt fun and risky! -I once had sex in the parking lot of a church, mostly just out of convenience and a bit out of urgency. I mean I did live right next door but the thought of getting it on right away in the car was much hotter, and once we were done, we noticed the service had just ended, talk about good timing and being risky! -Full on sex? Probably not much that is considered daring, in a public washroom or beside a river in a wooded area. But I have engaged in oral sex and that in lots of places the most daring would be on buses. -I lost my Virginity in my high school’s bathroom; it was definitely something I’ll never forget! -I once had sex in the dressing room at the mall, what a thrill. I also had sex up against a tree and once at a beach, both those I don’t really recommend haha.

- I had sex in a dressing room at a very small mall, haha it was more of a challenge, I’m sure some people must have known what was going on but the excitement was over the top. -I’ve done it in a grove of trees, a bathroom stall at a school, and gave road head in a car at a checks top. -The most daring place I have ever had sex was in a hot tub. -In an all-male dorm room from bible college, I wasn’t really going to that school my parents found the place and I eventually moved out to a family friend’s place. -And this one, ladies and gentleman, is one for the books. One of our lovely male friends has had sex in a racquetball room in a gym. Sound is amplified so every little slap can be heard at quite the distance. -So I was watching a basketball game in high school and after the game was over and the locker room was empty I got it on in the locker room, we knew someone could have walked in but neither of us cared. - This one time I was at a camp in the woods with my guy and a bunch of his friends, we were all

open relationships Well ladies and gentlemen, this particular topic has been a part of some very interesting conversations I’ve had lately and most people have very specific opinions about it, but what is an open relationship and what are some things to consider when thinking about the pros and cons of an open relationship? We all need to educate ourselves a little more about things we may not know much about. For those who don’t know, open relationships is when two people decide to be in a loving relationship, being there for each other and caring for each other but being open to each other having sex with other people . To some this may sound odd but there are also some who find this is the best kind of relationship for them. On one side, being in a relationship with someone is amazing, having someone love you for being you is amazing. In open relationships you still have all that but you also have the option of going out and hooking up. Sex is exactly that, sex; some people understand that better than others namely those in open relationships. Yes sex can make you close and is an intimate thing sometimes but it’s not always about that. Having the option to sleep with others when the urge occurs can actually make your bond closer in some ways. Think about it, no lies about “do you think that girl is attractive?” or “would you sleep with him?” 60 68
there is no reason to not be honest. And when one of you is in the mood and the other is not, well that’s fine too because you can fill that need. On the other side, some people argue that an open relationship is just another word for having someone for sure sex but you’re still shopping around for someone you want to be monogamous with. Or that the person who suggests it is just not ready to commit to just one person. Having one person that wants to be with you and only you and wanting them in the same way is amazing. It all comes down to the question of love. Is it really considered love if they are not monogamous? Well that question has a different answer for everyone. Now all anyone really needs to take from this is, if you are comfortable with your man or woman sleeping with other people or you are not comfortable with it, that is completely your choice. Don’t judge those who are in open relationships and don’t judge those who are not, times are changing and some of us are adapting in different ways right? Open relationships are perfectly normal as long as that’s what both parties want. And monogamy is perfectly normal to those who want it. You are the only one who can decide what’s right for you. Heck you can even chose to be single right? Just make sure you are happy, that is what matters the most.

It is engraved into every little girls head from the time she’s old enough to remember: you’re beautiful. We say this to friends, sisters, mothers, aunts, any woman who we want to feel good about themselves because well, we love them and they are beautiful! Everyone is beautiful in their own way. I think we forget a lot of the time what beauty actually is. Beauty is the elderly woman with age spots on her hands whose husband passed away, & when she sits alone at the park people snicker as they walk by. Beauty is the single mother who works two jobs to take care of her toddler & gets judged when walking through the mall because there’s no man on her arm. Beauty is the 16 year old girl whose curly hair is so wild she gets teased every day at school. Beauty is the woman who can’t seem to fit into any size jeans at the mall & cries silently in the change room. Just to clarify the last woman I just described has been me on more than one occasion. As a plus size woman, I despise the word “curvy” when people are describing me. There’s a difference between curves and rolls. To me I think curvy is a healthy, Beyonce shaped woman, but some girls are naturally thin and I could never say anything negative about any body shape. I’ve been thin, I’ve been chubby and women in general need to empower one another, not act out against each other. The only reasons someone should want to gain or lose weight is because their health or is being affected in a negative way or you actually want to do it for yourself. Whether you’re skinny, fat, black, white, short or tall, we all have or own demons we are fighting every day. When you see women who look different from you, which is basically any woman you will come across in the run of a day, instead of thinking, “wow she really needs to lose weight.” Or, “she must be bulimic.” Maybe you should try thinking, “How can I possibly relate to her struggle?” The bottom line is we are all different, but we are all women, we are all human, and we all have a heart.

Our Chef Nathalie Testi-Flamin shares great recipes straight from her own kitchen that are both tasty and healthy!
5 Spices Walnut Crisp “I invented this recipe last year with my favourite 5 spices blend, and my family continues to beg for more. If you like, you can substitute pecans, almonds, hazelnutsfor the walnuts.” • 1 cup of all pupose flour • ½ cup of walnuts-r • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • Pinch of salt • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature • 3/4 cup plus 3 tablespoons sugar, used in different parts of the recipe • 1 large egg • 1 teaspoon 5 spices DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. 2. Finely grind the walnuts in a food processor with the flour. In a bowl, stir together the walnuts, flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt. Set aside. 72
3. Combine the butter and 3/4 cup of the sugar in the bowl and until light and fluffy, about 1 minute. Add the egg and beat until smooth. Mix in the dry ingredients until combined. 4. In a small, shallow bowl, stir together the remaining 3 tablespoons sugar and the cinnamon. To shape each cookie, using a small spoon or ice cream scoop, scoop up a spoonful of the dough and roll between your palms into a 1-inch ball. As the balls are formed, roll them in the cinnamon sugar, coating evenly, and then place on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them 2 inches apart. 5. Bake until golden brown, about 10 minutes. If you are baking more than one sheet at a time, at the midway point, switch the pans between the racks and rotate them 180 degrees to ensure even baking. Let cool on the pans to room temperature. Et voilà ! so good with a glass of milk after a nice afternoon outdoors!

Ingredient Lists Deceptive, Illegal By: TAMMY MALLEY
Brock health science student, former food law consultant, gym addict and health nut. Can cook a carrot 101 ways while wondering the origin of growth of said carrot. The Food and Drug Regulations are responsible for the majority of the food laws that exist in Canada. Other acts and regulations—such as the Processed Products, Meat Inspection, etc—are used for more specific foods. These regulations and acts are meant to ensure that Canadians consume foods that are safe and manufactured properly. Unfortunately, there are several laws that allow loopholes or deception to consumers. One of these laws is how ingredients must be listed on an ingredient list on a package. In B.01.008(3) of the Food and Drug Regulations, it states that: “Ingredients shall be shown in descending order of their proportion of the prepackaged product or as a percentage of the prepackaged product and the order or percentage shall be the order or percentage of the ingredients before they are combined to form the prepackaged product.” Translation = the ingredients must be listed in order of their weight in the product, with the heaviest first and the smallest last. One would assume, then, that food additives (such as aspartame, flavour enhancer monosodium glutamate or preservative potassium sorbate) would also be listed in their appropriate order. WRONG. In B.01.008(4), it states: the following ingredients may be shown at the end of the list of ingredients in any order: 76
(a) spices, seasonings and herbs, except salt; (b) natural and artificial flavours; (c) flavour enhancers; (d) food additives, except ingredients of food additive preparations or mixtures of substances for use as a food additive; (e) vitamins; (f) salts or derivatives of vitamins; (g) mineral nutrients; and (h) salts of mineral nutrients. So if you look at a package of crackers, and see that MSG (monosodium glutamate) and preservatives are at the end, you may be led to assume that they are at the end because there is very little of them in the product. On that note, since monosodium glutamate—and other flavour enhancers like disodium guanylate—are not considered food additives but instead are flavour enhancers, there is no regulations that restrict the amount of the food enhancers that can appear in a product. A company can use as much of the food enhancers as they like (and still deceptively stick them at the end of the ingredient list).
An Apple A Day? By: Rachel Richard You are probably familiar with the old adage “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. If only it were that easy. Imagine the multi-billion pharmaceutical industry that prey on people’s anxieties over health and fitness being reduced to the apple, one of the earliest fruit to be cultivated. The common rhyme originated almost 150 years ago in Wales. Despite their health properties, apples may not have been the principal subject of the “Notes and Queries” publication, which first printed the proverb as follows: “Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread” (not as easy on the ears, is it?), because “apple” was an all-encompassing word for “fruit” in the 19th century. Nevertheless, the apple has remained central in folklore to this day despite its lack of miraculous properties. Let us consider the apple’s healthy benefits to understand its lasting popularity. Health Benefits Apples are not only delicious, but they’re very healthy. The nutritional value of apples is clearly evident in its biology as follows: Pectin: A soluble fiber found in apples that lowers blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose levels by slowly releasing sugar in the bloodstream which in turns, help control insulin levels. Boron: A nutrient that encourages the development of strong bones and a healthy brain. Quercetin: An antioxidant that reduces the risk of various cancers — such as liver, breast and colon cancer — and Alzheimer’s disease by improving your memory. In more practical terms, it also facilitates respiration by allowing oxygen to reach the lungs. Eating an apple before a workout will improve your endurance. Vitamin C: This vitamin helps to boost your body’s immune system. Malic acid: This acid is present in many teeth whitening products because of its stain-dissolving capabilities. Chewing an apple after a meal will also help remove excess food between your teeth and bacteria from your mouth. Beyond Apples No one denies the apple’s health benefits to the human body. But does it really effectively combat sickness? Is it healthier than other fruits? The problem at hand isn’t that people are eating too many apples, but rather people aren’t eating enough fruits. A recent study from Concordia University found that adults between thirty and sixty years of age don’t consume the daily recommended servings of fruits and vegetables. (Concordia University, 2012) Our wealth as a country doesn’t seem to have an impact on our health. A healthy diet doesn’t consist of one fruit — an apple — per day, but rather a mix of different fruits and vegetables to reach the daily recommended levels. It’s true no illness can be cured by diet
78
alone, but fruits and vegetables can go a long way in keeping your body, mind, and spirit healthy. While the apple has many healthy properties, such as reducing the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and types of cancer, it is no miraculous cure for whatever ails you. Like the majority of all fruits and vegetables, apples are necessary for a healthy and balanced diet. Like apples, most fruits claim different health benefits from their healthy components, such as potassium in bananas, beta-carotene in apricots, and fiber in blackberries. These nutrients are essential to a healthy diet but absent in apples. Since two to three servings of fruit is recommended per day, try including an apple to your diet to reap its benefits. Such a small change in your diet on a daily basis will have the biggest impact on your health in the long run. Don’t rely exclusively on apples to maintain a healthy diet. While they make a healthy alternative to foods heavy in salt and sugar, they won’t manage to keep the doctor away on their own. In conjunction with apples, try including various fruits in your diet to stay as far and long away from the doctor as possible. Health tip: Apples are an incredibly versatile food. If you tire easily of the same diet, try these different ways to incorporate the fruit in your diet: apple spice granola, apple chips, oven-baked apples, applesauce, apple juice, or my personal favourite, or apple slices dipped in peanut butter (makes a delicious quick snack).

Be Zen By: Rachel Richard

I have no desire of becoming a Buddhist monk but I cannot help but admire them. Buddhist teachings have known a resurgence in popularity during the last decades. In the mid-twentieth century, Buddhism was a fixture for counter-culture poets and activists who sought a simple, more peaceful alternative to western materialism. In our fast-paced environment where we have « more conveniences, but less time; we have more degrees, but less sense; more knowledge, but less judgment; more experts, but more problems; more medicine, but less wellness, » we have forgotten how to simply be. (Moorehead,1995) Such is the paradox of our time in history, a quote often wrongly attributed to the Dalai Lama, the high lama in the school of Tibetan Buddhism. You do not need to practice the Buddhist religion to incorporate some of its teachings into your life. Who among us can’t use more simplicity, concentration, and tranquility in our lives? Such peace of mind can be brought about by a new awareness of life: Zen. It cannot be defined by letters or numbers, but rather by a state of mind exercised in daily life that loosely translates to « living in the moment ». Zen teaches us to be truly aware of the present without dwelling on the past or worrying about the future; living your life without regrets of the past and perceive without preconceptions. Instead of rushing through life’s daily expectations, slow down, breathe, and appreciate every moment. Be in the Moment The word ‘Zen’ is derived from the Chinese word ‘Chan’, a mispronunciation that translates to ‘meditation’. A popular image of Buddhism is one of a monk sitting motionless, lost in thought. Apart from meditation, there are other ways to find some measure of peace to enjoy the present. Living in the moment is more difficult than it sounds, yet easy to master if given the opportunity. One cannot live in the moment every
second of their lives unless one dedicates the entirety of their lives to the practice. However, it is possible to find moments in the day to dedicate yourself to living in the moment. Try harder to concentrate on your actions throughout the day. Do not confuse your hurry with productivity. Give yourself entirely to the task at hand, whether it’s typing out a report at work or eating breakfast in the morning. Focus on a single activity at a time to experience it fully. Draw inspiration from the innocence of children and animals. They live without fear of tomorrow by being completely immersed in the present. Share in their serenity by partaking in their pleasure and abandon. Engage your sense of wonder with the world around you. Life consists of small details that mostly go unnoticed every day. Take the time to look around you and notice every component of your surrounding environment, from fresh paw prints in the snow to the newspaper vendor on the street corner. Living like a Zen monk can help you appreciate the small things in your life you often take for granted. Let their teachings inspire you in your day-to-day life as a means to find some semblance of peace and tranquility. Try turning off your smart phone, taking your bicycle to work or eating your lunch outside as a means to slow down your day. We are often too plugged in, turned on and online to realize life goes on beyond our screens. Rectifying this can be as easy as turning off the music as you are eating or refraining from multitasking while you are working. Concentrate on one thing at a time in the here and now. The key to happiness, Zen teaches us, is living in the moment in order to appreciate your life as it is, not as you wish it to be.
The quiet war against
Endometriosis by rachel richard
March is Endometriosis Awareness Month. Despite the fact endometriosis affects approximately 180 million women and girls worldwide (7.5 million in the United States and 775,000 in Canada), very little is known about the disease in the medical community and the public at large. One in ten women of reproductive age or younger are afflicted with this disease. (Adamson, 2010) The limited awareness of this illness is due to several factors that include difficulties in diagnosing the illness, symptoms that vary for each women, and the absence of a cure. The legacy of endometriosis is one that was long confined to female hysteria because its origins were thought to be physiological and psychological in nature. This may sound irrational to our modern and educated minds, but our ignorance persists to this day. Through the confusion and misinformation surrounding endometriosis, let us try to gain a better understanding of the disease that afflicts one in ten women. Endometriosis refers to misplaced cells, referred to as lesions, that are produced outside of the uterus as opposed to inside. They can be found on the pelvic structures such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus or uterosacral ligaments, bowels, bladder or intestines. As a woman experiences hormonal changes every month, these lesions grow in size and bleed during the menstrual cycle. As opposed to normal periods, during which the body sheds the uterus of its endometrium, patients afflicted with endometriosis are unable to shed themselves of these lesions. On account of their location outside of the uterus, these lesions result in painful cysts, internal bleeding, and the formation of adhesions (fibrous bands between a tissue and organ). MRI and ultrasound can be used in the diagnosis, but they are not sufficient in detecting smaller lesions. An definitive diagnosis is only possible through a surgical 82 76
procedure called laparoscopy because it requires visual and histological diagnosis. Endometriosis is not prejudiced against a specific type of women; it affects girls before puberty to post-menopausal women. If it is not diagnosed and treated at the onset of the symptoms, a woman may physically suffer for years without any significant pain relief, and psychologically as a result of repeated dismissals of her suffering. In fact, it takes an average of nine years to accurately diagnose endometriosis; nine long years during which a very serious medical condition is reduced to « killer cramps », a typical symptom of menstruation. During this time, women who suffer from endometriosis often stop believing in their own symptoms because both their support system and their doctors continuously dismiss them. Endometriosis is anything but typical and its symptoms vary and may worsen over the course of one’s life. These include acute pelvic pain that become chronic at time, fatigue, bowel and urinary dysfunction, infertility and painful intercourse, which are undeniably atypical of a woman’s healthy menstrual cycle. As a case in point, let’s look at Sarah Howells’ fight with endometriosis, which she has been battling for eight years. Although her experience with the disease is entirely her own, her story shares common traits with the life of an average woman with endometriosis. Sarah’s fight with endometriosis started when she was only ten years old. The pain, which started at the onset of her first menstruation, was so severe that her mother brought her to the emergency room. After several tests over an extensive period of time, including a painful pelvic exam at a local children’s hospital, she was misdiagnosed with dysmenorrhea. This is a common occurrence because dysmenorrhea shares many symptoms with endometriosis including disabling camps during menses. It was only after
five years and a new gynaecologist later when she received the right diagnosis of endometriosis after a laparoscopy surgery. Thus began her long and difficult road to recovery to find a course of treatment that worked best for her. Doctors are the ones that would most benefit from a better awareness of this disease in order to treat their patients with greater efficiency. Only 100 gynaecological surgeons out of 52,000 in the United States can treat this disease, which means a great number of women who suffer from endometriosis lack sufficient treatment or are misdiagnosed. (Petersen, 2011) In their case, a lack of awareness means a painful delay in treatment. However, that would require us to dispel the myths surrounding a woman’s reproductive cycle to gain greater understanding of what is considered « normal » menstrual pain. Symptoms of endometriosis are often misunderstood by both caregivers and healthcare consumers as being part of a « woman’s lot in life ». This explains why 70% of teens afflicted with pelvic pain are only diagnosed with endometriosis later in their lives. (Yeung, 2011) For her part, it took Sarah three years to find the right treatment after much trial and error. It’s time to start telling women to stop accepting this type of crippling pain as normal and seek the help they need and deserve. It’s important to understand there exists no preventive treatment or measures to impede the development of endometriosis. Preliminary studies have shown women are born with it rather than acquire it during their lifetime. Endometriosis is often referred to as a « disease of theories » because a definite cause has not yet been found. Research has found that a number of hereditary, environmental, epigenetic and menstrual characteristics explain the origin of the disease. No single theory has been able to prove the cause of endometriosis. In all probabilities, no one factor explains the origin of endometriosis and it is likely a combination of the above factors that brings about the disease before birth. It’s possible to economically measure the consequences of endometriosis due to its social and psychological impact. Since women between the ages of 15 and 49 experience the worse of pain associated with endometriosis, their productivity in society and in their personal lives is greatly limited. In reality, this costs women eleven hours per week individually and $100 billion per year globally. (Nnoaham, 2011) Finding a cure or a better course of treatment through greater awareness would be beneficial to both women and their environment. A possible course of action is the official recognition of endometriosis as a disability, thus allowing women to
qualify for the financial support they need. As a result, the true consequences of endometriosis on the lives of millions of women and girls would be acknowledged accordingly. For her part, Sarah is currently petitioning the United States government to obtain this recognition on a federal level. There has been similar efforts in the UK for a greater recognition of endometriosis. (Tranter, 2012) « I think more people would take notice and listen up, » Sarah believes, if such a recognition could be granted. « They would finally start to realize just how bad it is, whereas right now, they brush it off and most say that it’s all in our heads. Which is sad because it seems that nothing is as bad as we say unless the government says it is. » This acceptance would certainly give endometriosis the legitimacy it deserves, as well as the millions of women and girls it torments. After her diagnosis, Sarah, a self-proclaimed ‘Endo Warrior’ (activist for endometriosis), has chosen to direct her fight against endometriosis towards action. Six months ago she chose to dedicate her blog to endometriosis because she felt alone after her diagnosis since none of her loved ones really understood her plight. « I started [my blog] to vent out my own feelings and to help other girls and women, » she explains. « I’ve had quite a few of them come to me with their questions about endometriosis and with questions about my own experiences. I decided to type out my full story on my blog so they would know they weren’t alone and hopefully that would answer some questions in itself. » She hopes to become an ultrasound technician after graduating from college in order to be an advocate for endometriosis. Endometriosis certainly doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Because of the absence of reasonable awareness, women and girls are the ones that suffer from the lack of support from their community, inaccurate diagnosis from physicians and ineffective treatment. « I’m fighting so future generations won’t have to deal with the invisible illness that I wouldn’t even wish on my worst enemy, » says Sarah. It’s time to give women and girls back their sexuality, their education and their lives. Sarah Howells’ blog can be found here: http:// iamanendowarrior.tumblr.com/. She invites women and girls to feel welcome to visit her blog if they would like to talk just to get something off their chest, if they need advice, or if they have any questions about endometriosis or her fight with the disease. there, Done That!
Have you ever sat down to browse on Pinterest and find yourself saying “I can make that” but never do?
although I have may only saved a few calories, there are many other benefits to drinking almond milk.
There are tons of great tools and recipes on there, most of which seem foolproof. This week I found myself eyeing one pin in particular; the healthy version of a Wendy’s frosty...yummy!!
Almond milk is high in antioxidants, its heart healthy, high in vitamins and minerals while being lower in fat and calories and most almond milks are suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
This healthy version of the” frosty” called for 3/4 cup almond milk (we used vanilla flavor) 15 ice cubes, 1/2 tsp vanilla, 1-2 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder and 1/3 banana.
Overall, probably one of the most successful attempts I’ve made on Pinterest ideas, especially after the baked cauliflower that was SUPPOSED to taste like French fries...they did not!! Not sure what I’ll try next, perhaps a full meal that even my own family won’t know is good for them...hmmm
Although this mixture wasn’t awful, it was NOT a frosty so we then followed a few tips that others had made on how to make this taste a little better, including adding vanilla protein powder, which just added a chalky type flavor and texture. After all was said and done, I still found myself wanting to find a healthy version of this wonderful treat so I made a concoction of my own, I used 1 frozen banana (remember to peal the banana before freezing, I learned that the hard way) and 1 cup of chocolate almond milk with a handful of ice cubes and it was good but not delicious. Coming in at a safe 250 calories I thought GREAT, what a low calorie treat!! But then I realized that the real thing is only approximately 40 calories more. So, 84
If you have never had the opportunity to check out Pinterest, do it, it’s full of all kinds of great ideas, recipes, and DIY projects but be warned, when you check out the food section, it will automatically make your mouth water.

JANNA LOUNSBURY, 23 This week was not good at all. I went to my weigh in and was up 3.25lbs. Not the best feeling in the world. I am extremely disappointed in myself. I’ve gone through my head a million times on what went wrong. I know I cheated this week, went to China house with friends, probably not the best idea. Went to the cooking class we all got invited to by Atlantic Superstore which was amazing such good food but it was another treat. I really need to snap out of this rut where I think that I can cheat and get away with it. I also haven’t been working out that much either which is playing another role in being up this week. i just find it’s so hard to get motivated lately. I don’t know if it’s the weather or just a stump I can’t seem to overcome, but it is something I also have to work at. On the plus note, I highly recommend the Atlantic Superstore cooking class. It was a great experience with lots of laughs and information. The food was excellent and the chief was great. It is a nice night out with friends if your looking for something to do. I really need to step my game up this week and make a comeback. Wish me luck until next week!

What a great week! This week, I actually feel like the food is starting to click. I wasn’t great about going to the gym, I only went once this week, but I did work out at home, and according to my scale, I lost 3 pounds :) Work is still very busy, but I find that instead of craving food when I feel stressed, I’ve started itching to go to the gym. No matter how busy my day is or how much is on my to-do list, I always feel better after a good workout. I feel relaxed, accomplished, and the worries of my day just fade out, and I focus on my breathing and the strain on my muscles, push out the pain to get through one more rep, and I can do a little more each time. Exercising has become a great stress reliever for me and I’m really excited to have discovered this new tool. This week, especially with valentine’s day, I did slip up a few times. I had some chocolate, a donut, and a lovely lobster meal filled with butter and cheese and cream. But I’ve realised that beating myself up over it is counter productive. The more guilt I put on myself, the more I want to give up. But if I move forward, I can keep succeeding, and that makes me proud. And that’s the important part, isn’t it? The only person I need to worry about here is me. I’m the person I need to impress, the one I need to avoid disappointing, and the one I most need encouragment from. I am proud of myself because I know I can keep pushing forward, and that means I’ve already succeeded and will continue to succeed.

As much as I would like to be able to say that it has been a fantastic week, it was rough. Some of life’s stress finally caught up with me and I can admit that I may have fell off the wagon for a few days this week. For the first time since starting this program I gained at my weekly weigh in. Although it was only 1 1/2 lbs, I still feel down on myself for moving backwards. Still, I am trying my best to maintain a positive outlook on the whole thing. Weight loss and changing lifestyles is one of the hardest things to do. After years of finding comfort in sugar and carbs, and being used to eating until I was stuffed, learning to control my portion intake and the foods I eat among other things is proving overwhelming. I am constantly feeling temptation and wanting to give in. Sometimes I do, but most of the time I can resist unlike before. I have noticed some changes in the way I think about food and I hope I continue to move in the right direction. I’m looking forward to trying something new and getting into cross fit. Finding the motivation to get up and hit the gym has been hard, but I hope that it will get easier. My goal for this week is to lose at least the weight I gained this week and a few pounds extra. I feel confident that I can do it if I really dedicate myself to following my meal plan and getting in some physical activity. Good things to come!!
