Letter from the Editor One of the things I love most about November is that the smell of winter fills the air. You know that smell too. It’s a freshly lit wood stove, perhaps the smoke coming out of a neighbour’s chimney. I’ve always been totally in love with Christmas, too. I can’t wait to start blasting my old school Christmas music while I dance around the kitchen baking all sorts of goodies. It’s even more fun now that my baby girl is old enough to help me and enjoy it all too. Since the beginning of Pinkblitz, each month’s photo shoot has given me an incredible feel. So much that when asked to describe it, I would always answer that it feels like Christmas morning. Before this write up starts sounding like it belongs in the December issue (maybe I’m too late? haha!) I want to talk about this particular issue. 2014 was a big year for us, and 2015 will be even bigger. That being said, you’re going to notice changes in our issues. Some small and slight at first, but then large and very noticeable. Like this editor’s letter for instance. Special thanks to my girl Natalia Ryan for this awesome set up. Below you can also see the amazing people we have this issue. Alison Sweeney, who by the way was incredible to talk to, has much to share about the next chapter of her life. We look at this incredible artsy line of jeans from FIGI jeans, and read about Holly Glasser’s rise to stardom! Linda Carroll tells us about her new book in our relationship section and trust me when I say, it was a hell of a read! finally, we get to meet the amazing Bizzie Gold, inventor of the popular BUTI yoga. I also get the privilege of letting you know that this issue features the first column by relationship guru laurel house! Laurel is an absolute doll, and her column is going to be steamy and spicy ;) as always, my loyal readers, much love to you from all of us at Pinkblitz! xo xo

Jumpers, Rompers & maxi dresses BY MELANIE MCLEAN So summer, it’s fun, its breezy, it’s amazing… and it’s short when you live in the Maritimes (especially Northern NB!). So many cute and colorful styles and so little time to wear them all, not to mention wanting to spend the most time humanly possible at the beach which means you practically naked! We at Pink Blitz have discovered a few smart and chic ways to transition a few of your favorite summer pieces so you can get the most wear out of them possible. Jumpers, rompers, onesies whatever you like to call you’re grab and go one piece of convenience and style, I think it’s safe to say allot of us had to get one this summer. There is something very special about not having to pick out separates and still being able to do a cartwheel or even get out of a car without pulling a Britney and showing your nether regions.
Winterizing your maxi dress is pretty simple, throw on a cute pair of boots underneath and a sweater over top and voila, Warm, cozy and stylish. The key for this look is to not get engulfed in fabric, if you have a full skirt wear a slim fitting lighter knot sweater and vice versa, if you have a slim fitted and more body conscious skirt you can wear a larger bulkier knit top. If you balance your look you can be sure not to look like Helena Bonham Carter (unless that’s what you’re going for them all the power to you, wear two different colored sweaters sewn together with pipe cleaners and some sort of crazy hat to top it all off)
Sometimes it’s hard to look at our favorite summer pieces and think of anything else but hot days and margaritas on a patio, but the cruel reality is that we do have many more cold moths in our area then not, but that Instead of saying goodbye to your rompers shouldn’t stop us! Besides, layering is one of try putting on a pair of tights, a cute pair of the best parts of fall/ winter, you should mix, boots, casual blazer and a cute scarf to fight match and try on everything in your closet the cold and still be able to wear your romper. and see what looks good. Don’t de scared! If you want to embrace the 90’s trend that is in full swing try wearing your onesie with a pair of over the knee socks and a loose cardigan, just try not to channel your inner Cher Horowitz and crash your jeep white you’re at it! If you had two eyes and left the house at all last summer you saw that Maxi Dresses had also made a huge come back recently. 18 18

Dressing for Corporate Events BY Melanie mclean
Business casual, casual Friday, party attire, traditional: Dress codes have become increasingly diverse and somewhat cryptic in today’s new business world. When I think of my Mom dressing for work in the early 90’s I remember allot of suits… and shoulder pads… Dress codes have changed with the times and more and more employers want their employees to be more comfortable to show off their personality, however, sometimes you can wobble on the line of what is appropriate and what is not, especially with all of the upcoming festivities around the holiday season. Business casual, for men, this includes dress pants, with or without a sport jacket, and a collar shirt. For women, it includes a jacket or sweater, blouse, dress pants, skirt. Business casual may include dark-wash jeans for both men and women. But remember if you are going to go the route of business casual, you must opt for dark jeans, the darker the better, not vintage jeans with a bejeweled rear end and expertly placed rips and holes in just the right places (no matter how much they cost, or how fabulous they make you feel, it just doesn’t fly in a work environment). Fit is also key when dressing business casual. In order to look professional and put together you can’t have the back hem of your jeans on the floor and frayed, or your shoulder seams an inch lower then where their supposed to be, you’re going to look raggedy, and none wants to trust someone with anything important that can’t even dress themselves appropriately. I always live by the motto ‘when in doubt get a little fancy’ it’s better to be remembered as the person in the office that looked a little
fancy then a little raggedy, I guarantee it! This motto also coincides with the old saying ‘dress for the job you want, not the job you have’ because honestly, who doesn’t want that next promotion? Corporate events and parties, location and time of day are a good way to determine the dress code. For evening events (such as a staff Christmas event), lean toward party attire. For afternoons, use business casual. Remember, in this case again, overdressing is better than underdressing, but you don’t want to look like a sparkly chandelier while everyone else is in a LBD (little black dress). Just like in most everyday dressing choices remember to keep your outfit balanced, if you’re showing off a bit of cleavage (remember, I said a bit) keep the hemline a bit more conservative. A good rule of thumb is two inches above the knee, or I always ask myself ‘would I wear this around my mother?’ however I would not tell her that, Ha-ha! Nothing is worse than bringing your girls out to play and have a drunken old co-worker ogling you making you feel like running to the closest shower/sweater combo! You don’t want to start the New Year avoiding eye contact after awkward party fashion mishaps gone wrong. Don’t forget with Social Media being so intertwined in our lives, break the dress code or make a glaring faux pas and your picture will end up on Facebook for all to see and remember well into the new year, be remembered for being stylish and cunning, not the hot mess that everyone is talking about at the water cooler. 21
What’s In, What’s Out BY SCOTT MCLEAN
Fall is here and is full of chic outfit options to stay warm while strutting through the leaves. Whether you’re apple picking or pumpkin carving there is no need to look frumpy this fall. So take off your skimpy summer neons and throw on your chic fall capes because I’m going to tell you in my opinion what’s “In” and what’s “Out” for Fall 2014. IN Capes/Blanket Coats – One very chic way to stay warm this winter is with a cape. Some of the best designers like Burberry and Issa have designed some seriously adorable capes for Autumn/Winter. When choosing a cape, A-Line designs are the shape to choose and will amp up your Autumn/Winter look. You can’t go wrong with a neutral color palette especially in a cream or grey or you could take a risk and go for the ever popular plaid pattern for a head turning caped look. Pair your cape or blanket coat with a cute booty and a skinny jean and you’ll be pulling off this look like a pro. Plaid – Now this may seem like an obvious option for what’s “In” but there is more to plaid this year than what we’ve seen before. This year designers have taken plaid to this next level and have been using this Celtic classic on everything from chic trouser pants to cropped tops. Yes, a plain plaid shirt is still classic and cute but if you want to be more Victoria Beckham and less Donna from That’s 70’s Show than start incorporating plaid in fashionable pieces. A plaid flowy trouser pant with a stiletto is one of the cutest looks this year and can take you from day to night. For the more fashion experienced readers out there you can do a bold look by wearing a matching plaid blazer and pant combo. This will have heads turning and make you the best dressed in any room this fall. 22

OUT Brights/Neons – So this might be part of my mourning process from the death of our summer but brights should be left behind with the summer heat. Fall is here and winter is just around the corner. The last thing you should be doing is clinging on to your summer brights and looking like you were too busy tanning to buy a fall wardrobe. Embrace the cold weather and start wearing the color palette of fall 2014… mud and sludge. Yes this sounds unappealing but these neutral and dim colors are chic and fall appropriate. Think soft browns, dusty greens and muddy grays. Pairing these colors with whites, blacks, and charcoals will keep your colors to a minimum but will give you some major style points this season. Normally I would say stay out of the mud but this year I say go all in. Harem Pants – I have to give it to harem pants, they’ve had a good run. I have seen harem pants stand the test of time but their time is up. Although they aren’t a match with my own personal style, I did appreciate a good harem pant look. They were edgy and when done right chic. In my opinion harem pants are tired looking and need to be replaced with a chic fall trouser. A thick wool or a thick woven fabric trouser is the perfect replacement for harem pants. They are still spacious at hip level but still have a tailored look to them. You can dress up or dress down a trouser and when paired with an oxford shoe, smoking slipper or loafer you can’t go wrong.

Ask the Stylist: Scott McLean What are a couple key things all women can do to look more stylish? This is a great question because many people think style is all about the articles of clothing you wear, I tend to disagree. Yes clothes are important but there are many things that contribute to great style. One style factor is accessories. Accessories are the frosting to any outfit. You can have a basic outfit but when paired with the right accessories, your outfit can be taken to the next level. One style factor I feel gets neglected are shoes. In my opinion shoes are the cherry on top of the fashion sundae. There are an unlimited variety of shoe styles to choose from that can compliment any look or style. thing to bring to the table when it comes to style is confidence. You want Shoes can also headline an outfit and to be wearing the clothes; the clothes can communicate exactly what you shouldn’t be wearing you. Whether you want your outfit to say without having are faking it or not, confidence is the to say a word. best accessory to have when it comes to style. Last but not least the most important 24
What are the most effective styling pieces? In my opinion the best styling pieces are pretty simple. One would be a little black dress. Every woman should have a go to black dress that is simple but stylish. This is a great piece to have because the right little black dress (LBD) can be dressed up or down and can take you through all 4 seasons. Another great styling piece would be a great pair of stilettos. A basic color stiletto can go with almost anything and can take you from the office to a night out without hesitation. One last styling essential which is perfect for fall is a great leather jacket. It’s worth investing in a leather jacket because it will always be in style and can go with almost any look. When looking for good styling pieces versatility is very important. You can through a leather jacket over a dress or put it over a casual tee and jeans for a classically stylish look.

INTERVIEW WITH

From the outside of her quaint townhouse on the west end of Toronto, you would hardly think that resident and mom of two Dianna Dinoble, was churning out custom made corsets from her basement studio. Dinoble, the owner and operator of Starkers! Corsetry, has been sewing since she was six years old. Now she is an esteemed corsetiere working with celebrities such as Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ashley Green, Julia Styles and more.
local boutiques. Her interest in gothic fashion naturally progressed into the realm of corsets, and she fell in love with the complexity and beauty that they exemplified. “I started making corsets because I wanted one for myself but there was absolutely no where to buy one.” Said Dinoble. “I noticed all of the corset patterns I was finding from old books didn’t have a shape that actually fit my body correctly, so I started playing with the patterns to create something better… I thought ‘these are such cool things, and so much goes into them and they are so bloody expensive they may as well be comfortable!”
Dianna grew up in Peterborough Ontario, an unlikely place for a budding designer to become inspired by corsetry, fashion and the punk-rock scene. Her affinity for Goth aesthetic was developed early on by taking inspiration from her high school Art History This notion of a comfortable corset was classes and other Canadian designers. what ultimately lead Dinoble to start her own business in 1992. After graduating from “There was a designer in Toronto, Martine Sheridan College’s Fashion Design program Matthews” said Dinoble,“Seeing her work she apprenticed for a number of designers when I was maybe about fifteen or so really before taking the leap into entrepreneurship. inspired me. She had this amazing, gorgeous Goth clothing shop on Queen West and the “Before opening Starkers! steadily after opening her downtown studio. She perfected her corset making techniques and soon after launched her website to take international orders. A few years later she transitioned her studio into her current home. In recent years, Dianna has been exposed to a new side of the corset industry; one that while very obscure has also turned out to be very rewarding. After suffering a back injury a few years back, Dinoble discovered the demand for medical corsets or “braces”. She created a custom one for herself and soon after had a list of clients who were also in need. She drafted corsets for people of all shapes and sizes suffering from a number of painful back and spinal issues. ““The ones I am most proud of definitely are the ones that have helped people get around a little better or have relieved pain” she said ,” I’m really proud of that, being able to give somebody their quality of life back” As for the future, Dianna has decided against any international expansion. In order to maintain the personalized touch that goes into all of her pieces. “I really like where Starkers! is at now, I don’t think I could keep the custom made to measure if I did expand in an international way. I would have to have kind of an off the rack line and with a corset, something that is that specifically fit I wouldn’t want it to be just a standard sizing.”

Accessorizing with hats! BY CASSIDY ALLAN There are a few vital accessories every fashionista needs in order to keep warm during the chilly fall and winter months. Trendy beanies and toques are the perfect seasonal staple, but the key to rocking these looks is knowing how to style them! This year look for hats that make a statement; whether it is with a bold prints, flashy gems or a furry pom-pom. These types of hats make it easy to glam up a simple outfit, it’s just like adding a statement necklace to your winter ensemble. Layering is an important tool to master as well. You might feel the need to haul all of your winter accessories out of your closet, but try to find a healthy balance between cozy and chic! If you are going to use your hat as a statement piece keep your scarf, gloves and mittens more neutral in order to create a harmonious look.

Pinkblitz had the opportunity to interview the creative director of FIGI Jeans, Diane Carleton. Diane, who recently partnered with artist John Rossi, has created a line of clothing for the artist in all of us! PB: What inspired you to start FIGI? DC: FIGI’s inspiration came from the desire to promote contemporary artists while doing what I know: Apparel. Particularly jeans. PB: Who was your fashion inspiration? DC: My fashion inspiration is a contemporary woman who is an artist, or who has a deep appreciation for visual arts and wants to express this in how she dresses. PB: What were some challenges you faced getting started as an entrepreneur in the fashion industry? DC: The challenges come in the areas that I do not have experience. I have sought out experts in these areas, such as sales, to advise me, but this takes time, and missteps happen. 39
PB: What made you want to sew art into jeans? DC: I wanted to help promote contemporary artists and knew I could make some incredible looking jeans at the same time. PB: What has been the most rewarding part of your job thus far? DC: Seeing the approved samples was very rewarding. Achieving the look of the artwork while using different processes that a woman could wear was rewarding. PB: If you could design clothing for anyone in the world, who would it be and why? DC: I design clothing because it brings me joy and I hope that it brings joy to those who wear what I design. I am far more democratic in my desire to bring this joy than to limit it to one person. I would want the woman who wears my clothing to be someone who has fun expressing herself through how she dresses. PB: What can we look forward to from FIGI in the next year? DC: Certainly, you will see more artwork from FIGI. In exploring new artwork we will expand the processes used. We look forward to offering jackets, vests and shirts at retail, in addition to our tees and jeans. PB: What advice do you have for others trying to follow their dreams? DC: Do not try to do everything by yourself. Ask for advice from those you know with expertise in a given area and if your network doesn’t have this knowledge, as if anyone can recommend someone that does. I have found so many people who have gratefully given me good advice and new contacts. Be prepared to pay for areas that you would not be able to do well by yourself, which could be legal, financial or technical.

Holly Glasser Pinkblitz Magazine Editor in Chief Lilly Babineau had the opportunity to interview Holly Glasser, a rising actress who recently made her way onto the LA Scene, and has already broken into some amazing roles! PB: When did you decide you wanted to be truly helped me realize my own inner artist as an actress? What influenced your decision? well! HG: Becoming an actress, model and musician was somewhat of a subtle dream that snuck up on me and finally attacked me with a lovely seizure. I’ve always had a creative mind. In childhood, I loved to play dress-up and create stories through costume, dance and music! It was not until after college that my creativity truly blossomed. I began attending acting and modeling classes in the evenings after my day jobs and played guitar at my first open mic. During this time, my creative spirit began to flourish and I began dreaming of moving to NYC. PB: Who were your biggest influences? HG: My biggest influence is by far my little sister! She is four years younger than me but I really look up to her for her creative and adventurous spirit! She is a true artist and is a full-time photographer. She also writes in beautiful calligraphy and dabbles in hand woven crafts, interior design and web design! After my college years, she and I took oil painting classes, played guitar and did many photo shoots together! I watched her pursue her many artistic endeavours with joy and she

PB: What hardships (if any) did you face style! I have some amazing memories that I growing up that might have impacted the will cherish for a lifetime working alongside my road your life has taken? friends in the beginning of my career. HG: During my teens and early twenties, my heart got broken a couple times by boys. In my mid twenties, I got my heart shattered by someone I thought I was going to marry. This really helped shape me as an artist, as I sought out ways to express myself through art and find ways to turn suffering into something beautiful. I learned the power of being resilient, to be able to start over from scratch and re-invent oneself. PB: What challenges did you face to break into the acting world? HG: In order for me to move to New York and pursue my dream in the arts, I had to quit my stable teaching and interpreting jobs in my hometown. It was a bit risky. My family and friends thought I was crazy! For the first few months in New York, I slept on couches and did some odd jobs until I found a solid apartment and consistent acting and modeling work. Jumping out of the nest and flying from home is not easy, but it’s worth the risk if you’re willing to pursue your dreams!
PB: If you were to be a female lead, who would be your leading man? HG: I like my man rugged with dark hair, strong features and a swarthy complexion who is not afraid to romance me with his eyes. He woos me with his quiet strength and confidence. He is witty and educated with a grin that breaks on his face like sunshine. To me, I’d be more than satisfied to work alongside the whimsical Johnny Depp, the laconic and mysterious Viggo Mortenson, the perceptive and intelligent Christian Bale or the edgy and soulful Reeve Carney. I’m especially obsessed with Alessandro Nivola’s character in the French film Coco Chanel. I admire all of these men for the diverse roles they play and for their depth of character.
PB: Tell us about your acting experiences so far. What has been your favorite? HG: In my first two years as an actress, I have played the lead in many music videos, commercials and short films, had speaking lines on pilots and feature films, was featured in Vogue Italia, walked the runway for Redken, and sang in my first opera. I was also seen in Carrie Diaries, and The Amazing Spiderman 2. My experiences have been diverse and I have enjoyed each opportunity. However, I have most enjoyed working with my friends the Craig brothers who invited me to be in one of their films and also a music video for Sufjan Stevens. The Craig brothers have a creativity that is truly magical. Their style is similar to Wes Anderson films. I also enjoyed my first film project ever, called Pineapple City. This was also filmed with friends in a Wes Anderson 52

Hair & Makeup: Holiday Party BY KRISTINA MALLET Like every good party, you spend a lot of time preparing your hair and makeup for the staff Christmas party. This is a time where your coworkers are going to see you all dressed up and looking your best. So what are the best styles to choose from? Let’s take a look. When it comes to hair, you should want to keep it a classic. As fun as it sounds to try the newest, hottest style, there WILL be photos. You don’t want to look back in a few years to these wonderful moments and look at your hair and think, OMG. Keep it simple with a low-bun updo. It does have to be as fancy as something one would wear for a wedding, even just a chignon (a bun) or a French twist. These classic styles never go out of style AND go with just about any outfit. Now that you have your hair done, let’s look at makeup. The same rules apply for makeup too. Fine a nice classic look, such a medium Smokey eye, or a soft purple Smokey eye. If you try to go with a super-hot makeup trend, such as funky colors, extra bold eye liner or a black Smokey eye (usually a classic, but assuming you are going to have a few drinks with your co-workers, there is a maintenance with this look) so you are not in the bathroom every 10 minutes making sure nothing has smudged. When it comes to lipstick, you can always make this part stand out. Choosing a red for the holidays is perfect. Just make sure to have a lip brush and some wipes to reapply after eating/drinking. Now that you have all this information, go on and dazzle them at the holiday party!

Stocking stuffers are super popluar and the usual ones are chocolates, candies, socks, and all that good stuff. But here are a few other items you can add to them, that are perfect for the beauty in you. Mini Mascaras. These items are super hot right now. You can purchase really good ones for about the same price as a regular, full size mascara but this a quailty vs. quanity item. Lipglosses! With winter making everything extra dry, you can never have enough of these, and usually during the holidays, they package 2-4 to-gether so you have a varitey to choose from. But try to find ones with added vitamin E. Nail polishes are another great item to add to your list of stocking stuff-ers. Since you have a wide variety of color, it’s easy to find a color that make your giftee very happy! All these wonderful items are perfect for stocking because you can al-ways find them in neutral colors, and you won’t have to try and sneak around to find out if it makes them.

Choosing Your Perfect Skin Cream BY PRESLEY MCGLASHING ESTHETICIAN & MAKEUP ARTIST Choosing a face cream should be easy right? But once you’ve made it to the treasure trove of creams that line the wall of the cosmetics department, that easy choice becomes quite daunting. The cream you do end up choosing, without proper help, could very well be the wrong cream. Here’s how to avoid making the most common mistakes when shopping for your face cream.
absolutely no good for either skin type. Choosing a sunscreen as your day cream rather than a real day cream. Day creams moisturize, protect and prime your face for a makeup application, some even contain sunscreen for UV protection. But for added protection it is best to use another SPF product in conjunction with a day cream because a typical sunscreen does not moisturize adequately. Next, refusing to use a night cream because the day cream is enough. Wrong, a day cream is just that, for the day. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, a day cream protects the skin from pollution, dirt, from absorbing makeup and hydrating the skin. A night cream on the other hand is used at night before bed because when you are at rest your skin can absorb the active ingredients in the night cream to help heal and regenerate %30 more than when you are awake. And don’t think that if you get a day and night in one that you’re getting double the power, you’re not. They do not work as efficiently together at the same time as they do separately. And last, using drying acne products because you have blackheads. Blackheads are trapped oil and dirt, but dry skin can have blackheads too and that would usually be caused by dead skin cells that have not been exfoliated. Getting rid of them is one story, but preventing them is all in how you choose your face products. Always choose non-comedogenic. This means that the product’s ingredients do not clog pores, allowing you skin to breathe and absorb the benefits of the cream.
Avoid labels that state “All Skin Types”. This is virtually an impossible statement that means all skin types can be treated the same, when in fact they can’t. For example, dry skin requires more oil, but oily skin should avoid excess oil. If a cream is made for “all skin types”, then that means the same cream has added oil to soothe With these tips, you should have no dry, flaking skin and oil inhibiting ingredients problem choosing a cream suitable for to reduce oils from producing on oily skin. your skin’s needs. Pro Cleansing Tips! BY PRESLEY MCGLASHING Everyone knows that they should be doing it, but it is often done wrong or not at all. I’m talking about washing your face. As an esthetician, I see many skin problems and conditions that are troublesome to the client but often enough can be cleared up by simply washing your face properly. But which is the proper way to wash your face, and which is the wrong way? Here are my pro tips to a flawless cleansing routine that may be the one change you need to help clear up any skin issues. Number 1: Remove your makeup nightly. Even if you don’t wear makeup, you still have to wash your face to remove dirt and pollution that are now clogging your pores from your day’s activities. Use a milk cleanser that doesn’t foam to first remove the makeup, this keeps the skin from becoming over damaged and dry from harsh cleansers.
and ingredients, be sure to choose one according to your needs Number 3: Always avoid soap products and sulfates as they are naturally aggressive and are quite irritating. This could be a reason why your skin is overly dry or tend to breakout into itchy patches or acne. These conditions can often be the result of a reaction rather than a tendency. Remove the irritant and you remove the reaction. Number 4: Exfoliate once every 4 days with a gritty facial scrub, unless you have active acne (red, sore, under the skin and whiteheads). A facial scrub can help to loosen dead skin cells that will clog pores causing breakouts and blackheads. Exfoliating dry skin can relive itchy patches and remove the layer of dry skin to allow the moisture products to absorb. Use masks with vegetable or fruit enzymes for acne instead of a facial scrub because the friction can worsen the break out. Exfoliating on a 4 day cycle keeps the skin from becoming over aggressed and helps to quickly remove the dead cells that are beginning to form on the top layer.
Number 2: Don’t forget your toner! I know, no one really knows what a toner is and it seems so unnecessary, but it is. Toners help to restore the natural pH level of the skin once it has been altered due to cleansing. Toners also prepare the skin to receive the moisture products you will be using next. Toners can Follow these cleansing tips and your skin will have extra benefits depending on skin type thank you!

Professional Facials: Luxury or Necessity? BY PRESLEY MCGLASHING, ESTHETICIAN & MAKEUP ARTIST Facials are often seen as a luxury as opposed to a necessity, but they are much more than a luxury service. Think of a facial as a checkup. You go to your dentist or your doctor for check-ups for oral health an internal health. Well, going to see your esthetician for regular facials would be you’re monthly check-up for external health. Facials are more than just a professional cleansing. They include exfoliation, sometimes chemical or enzyme peels, massage to stimulate healthy circulation, a mask customized to specific needs and a moisturizer. Some have treatments that can be added for the lip contour and eye contours. Every facial is different depending on the client, and how the skin reacts to the treatments is also different from client to client.
as the skin reacts and heals, the skin analysis is performed every time. Extractions are also done during this time. The massage: this is the “luxury” part. The massage is gentle enough to cause a sense of relaxation, but it also stimulates circulation in the face to nourish the skin from the inside out and products can be absorbed quickly for instant results. The stimulation from the massage also helps to circulate lymph in the body which helps with balancing the skin, detoxifying the face and body, and boosting the immune system.

This new column is the no-games approach to dating and love that will help you break down your barriers, be your authentic self, and step out your strategy to have a real substantive connection. Whether you’re single or in a relationship, this column will empower you to be your best self and present that authentically amazing you to the world so that you finally communicate you needs… and have them met! So let’s start with a few of the first date “rules” that you must screw! On your first date, don’t stick with “safe” subjects like your career, your dog, and your favorite travel spots. Get raw! Open up. Share something about yourself. That’s the purpose of the first date right? To figure out if there is chemistry, if you’re a potential fit, You hate them don’t you? Those dating games if you share common ground… So why would that feel more like manipulation than fun, as you hide who you are, avoiding meaty topics
Screw the rules! A COLUMN BY RELATIONSHIP EXPERT, LAUREL HOUSE you stress over what you should do and say, that matter, and be careful not to fly potential and how to act. Well if you’re looking for love, red flags? and craving a real connection… If you’re sick Wait… did my flag comment raise a few for of the games, then stop playing them! you? Here’s the reason- if you say something You might not even realize the games you on a first date like “I’m divorced. Twice play. You may think that you are just abiding actually. I was young and not ready- both by “the rules,” following the conventional times. 21 the first time and it only lasted for 6 dating expectations that dictate when you months. I was trying to have what my parents should call, not call, make yourself available, have- who were married at 21 and are still pretend to be busy, and tip toe around the happily together. My 2nd husband, we really truth… which isn’t lying, it’s just not being didn’t take the time to get to know each exactly transparent. Well screw the rules! It’s other…” Do you think that’s appropriate? The answer is YES! Absolutely! Why? Because time to get real. 78
being divorced twice could be a red flag for someone. Don’t you want to know that now, before you invest in the relationship, before you open your heart and dedicate your days? But it’s all about presentation. And that’s what I help my clients with- how to “frame” their stories and expose their depths in what I call a “U” strategy.
depth, you’ve got to dig deep and form your connection there.
Here’s why: If you are raw and honest and revealing, not just for the sake of dumping your baggage on the table, but instead to say… “and I have learned so much about love and what I am looking for…” and you fess up to having made mistakes- which shows vulnerability, but then you show the silver lining- the lessons you learned and how you are better because of it- which shows strength! That SAYS something. That’s real. And if they still say… “you know, the fact that you were married twice, that’s a red flag for me and I can’t date you.” Fine- there are, no joke, plenty of fish in the sea and you will find someone else who finds it attractive that you were open to taking a chance, to throwing caution to the wind, to jumping into love feet first… even if it unfortunately bit you on the butt.
2. SCREW THIS: Don’t reveal too much on the first date DO THIS: OPPOSITE! Be totally open. Fly your red flags, expose your baggage. Be real and get raw.
When it comes to dating, and really most relationships, the easiest way to create a connection and to initiate a bond is by being open, revealing something about yourself, even being vulnerable. If you’re open, chances are that they will be open too. If you’re both open, you are allowing for the possibility of a deeper connection, one rooted closer to your core as opposed to something surface and fleeting. Once you reveal something about yourself, you have an automatic bond. You shared on a level that you don’t generally expose. You have confided in each other. If you want to find that deep guttural love, the love that lasts, that hooks your heart and implants itself in your soul, you’ve got to screw the façade, the protective layer, the walls, the hiding of the feelings, and the front. You have to be raw. After all, you’re not looking for a friend. You’re looking for love. If you want
Here are 5 First Date Rules to Screw 1. SCREW THIS: Don’t talk about your Ex DO THIS: YES- definitely mention your Ex. But again, it’s about framing.
3. SCREW THIS: Be Busy and Don’t Explain Why DO THIS: Don’t pretend to be busy. BE busy. Get a life. And share that life with him so he knows just how interested you are. 4. SCREW THIS: Only casual kissing on the first date DO THIS: Do what you feel… Assuming that you pre-qualified first, you should know him pretty well by the end of the date. 5. SCREW THIS: Ladies: Offer to Pay. DO THIS: Ladies: Never ever ever offer to pay on a date. Don’t even do the fake reach.
Holiday Love Affairs BY ANGELA VINCENT
Ahhhh, the holidays. That magical time of year when you are invited to multiple parties and social functions and booze seems to exist in a never-ending supply. Between the numerous social opportunities, the warm fuzzy feelings brought on by the season, and the warm fuzzy feelings induced by wine and eggnog, the holidays are notorious time of the year for hook-ups...some good, some bad. I’m going to give you a few examples of holiday hookups that it might be best to avoid.
secretly fantasizing about at your desk for months, hooking up after a boozy office party can have negative repercussions at work. Some workplaces have policies regarding inter-office canoodling, so you could be setting yourself up for disciplinary action. Even if no such policy exists, you could be setting yourself up for gossip and major awkwardness at work. It’s sometimes better to keep the fantasies in your mind rather than act them out, for the sake of your career.
The holidays abound with gushy, sentimental fluff, from the movies, to the music, to the commercials on TV. It’s difficult to not get swept up in a tsunami of nostalgia. A lot of girls get the “great” idea to hook up with their exes durung the holiday season, because all of the wonderful, happy memories come rushing back. Before you jump back into your ex’s bed, its a good idea to think about the reasons why you broke up in the first place. There’s a good chance that after the sparkly, gingerbread, holiday fog lifts, you could seriously regret it.
Single people can often experience intensified feelings of loneliness during the holiday season, as messages of love and togetherness are often jammed down their throats every time they turn on a radio or a TV. Attending holiday parties alone can be depressing to some, who may feel as though everyone in the world is paired up but them. These magnified feelings of loneliness can result in poor decisionmaking, especially where booze is involved. Random hook-ups, while fun at the time, are not necessarily the cure for a lonely heart. In fact, they often result in making you feel worse. If you’re going to hook up with someone, try to think about whether you’re doing it because it’s what you really want or whether it’s simply a tool to make you feel less lonely. If it’s the latter, there are ways to feel connected and involved (e.g. with friends) without making you feel like crap in the morning.
The holiday staff party is a great opportunity to let loose with your coworkers and to get to know them on a more personal level. However, you might want to be careful about how “personal” you get. While there might be a hot treat in your office that you’ve been 70 80

Reasons to be SINGLE This Holiday Season! BY ANGELA VINCENT
The holidays can be a particularly depressing time of year for the single crowd, as images of couples holding hands in front of store windows, cuddling in front of fireplaces, and enjoying festivities together seem to slap you in the face relentlessly from November 1st until New Year’s. However, there are several benefits to flying solo this time of year, so fear not!
second helpings of everything? Go for it! Slip into a turkey and pie-induced coma. You don’t have to worry about staying awake for sexy time.
1. An obvious plus is that you won’t have to agonize over what to buy him. If it’s a new relationship, you won’t have to stress about how much to spend, whether a sentimental gift is appropriate, and so on. 2. Because you don’t have to spend money on gifts for a significant other (and quite possibly, his family), you can potentially save a ton of cash.
8. You don’t have to showcase your potentially non-existant culinary skills if you don’t want to. This can save time, money, and stress. Time that would be spent prepping, cooking, serving, and cleaning up can be spent doing more enjoyable things.
3. You have the option of taking the money you would have spent on your plus one and spoiling yourself! Buy yourself a gift, make wine, go to the spa, plan a mini-vacation. Treat and pamper yourself. You deserve it! 4. You have more time to spend with your own family, friends, and people of your choosing. Since you’re not running back and forth between two (possibly more, if parents are divorced) families and groups of friends, you’ll be able to spend more quality time with your own crew. 5. You have the option of skipping things altogether. You want to skip boxing day brunch and sleep off your turkey hangover? Go for it! You’re on your own schedule. 6. You can eat and drink whatever you want! You can wear sweatpants to the table. You want

7. Being single at holiday parties is pretty great. You can flirt with whomever you choose, dance with whoever you want to dance with...heck, carry mistletoe around and kiss whoever you want.
9. You don’t have to attend your partner’s office holiday party. As much as sitting with a group of strangers who are talking “shop” sounds like a blast, being single means you can skip the awkward introductions and conversations. 10. Less rushing means less stress! 11. You can decorate however you want! Let your creative juices flow. Do you want a pink tree with a Spongebob Square Pants topper? Go for it! You’re the only person who needs to like it. The main thing to remember is that you’re not defined by your relationship status, even during the holidays. If you’re single, you can still have an amazing holiday season.

It’s safe to say that discovering that your partner is not being faithful can be absolutely devastating. Having multiple phones can be another red flag.

Cooking With
Nathalie
Our Chef Nathalie Testi-Flamin shares great recipes straight from her own kitchen that are both tasty and healthy!
French Onion Soup Melt butter in a large Dutch oven or heavy pot on medium-low heat. Add onions. Spread them out in as thin a layer as possible. Sprinkle with sugar, and cook, stirring just as needed to keep onions from sticking, until they are melting and soft, golden brown, and beginning to caramelize, about 1 hour. Sprinkle flour over onions, and stir to coat. Add 1 cup of white wine , stock, and thyme, and bring to a simmer. Cook, partially covered, for about 30 minutes, to allow the flavors to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Meanwhile, lightly toast bread under a broiler; set aside. Ladle hot soup into six ovenproof bowls. Arrange the bowls on a baking pan. Place 1 or 2 slices of toasted bread over each bowl of soup. Sprinkle 1/2 cup grated cheese over bread in each bowl, and place under the broiler until cheese is melted and crusty brown around the edges. Watch carefully that bread doesn’t burn. Serve immediately 90

Bizzie gold INTERVIEWED BY LILLY BABINEAU
PB: According to your Bio on the site, you first came to the media’s attention in 2012, but obviously you had a life before this all blew up for you. When was it that fitness had become such a huge role in your life, and what inspired it? BG: I have been a competitive athlete since the age of 9 so whether I liked it or not fitness conditioning has been part of my daily life. For my 9th birthday my dad built me a weight room. I think that about sums it up. After years of extremely masculine fitness training and competitive sports, I finally injured myself and was left to pick up the pieces and rehab my knees with yoga. At first it felt really slow and I felt a bit trapped but as I progressed in my practice and started teaching myself, I added in some of the high intensity elements and movements that felt missing and really found that masculine and feminine style united. PB: You’ve worked with some pretty big names in the entertainment industry. Julia Roberts, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Lydia Hearst... all pretty popular. Who was first interested in your program and how did you feel when it happened? BG: When Julia first asked me to train her I kept trying to play it cool but deep down just hearing her voice - it was my only moment of ever feeling a little star struck. When I first met her that all just faded away and all I could think of was that she was even prettier, smarter and more kind than I could have ever imagined. She is a truly special woman and I’m glad to have had the opportunity to train her. PB: Tell me about your Buti Yoga Program and what it means to you.
BG: Buti Yoga is everything to me. Without it I go crazy! I had a student tell me the best quote that pretty much sums it up: “It’s my morning coffee, my therapist and my workout.” The tribe of women that Buti Yoga has created and brought together is the best part. It’s like I got an opportunity to grab a bull horn and say “all badass, supportive, friendly, intelligent women who want to support other women in their badassery - step to the left.” These women blow my mind on a daily basis and what Buti Yoga has helped unlock in them is nothing short of unbelievable. PB: You are a strong believer in the Empowerment of women. Was that always something that you felt important or was there a specific event that made you realize this was important? BG: I have always been told that I’m very masculine. Even my husband tells me I need to work harder on being less “masculine.” It’s ironic that I stumbled upon owning a female empowerment brand because I never really thought of empowerment in that way. I think why women find me inspiring is my honesty and lack of apology for my beliefs, actions or behaviors. Maybe that’s empowerment? I think I’ve really come to realize that for most women becoming truly empowered means stepping into a bit more of your masculine energy and finding that perfect balance. Our society has groomed women to live their lives a certain way and adopt certain behaviors that I help them get rid of! PB: Aside from having a passion for Fitness, what do you do in your spare time?
93
BG: What spare time? LOL. I am the CEO of my company so there isn’t really any spare time between running the company and traveling to train instructors. When I do have time I like to bake paleo treats with my 4 year old daughter Sarai.
Helping women get out of their own way to attain greatness is my #1 passion. I think Buti Yoga helps start the process and then there are other steps along the way to truly usher women into discovering their passion.
PB: Being a mom and career woman is hard work (I know, been there! ) how do you manage? What keeps you sane, so to speak?
PB: What advice can you give to others following a similar career path?
BG: I am often not entirely sane. I do my best but sometimes being split between the two can be a huge challenge. I think it’s actually even tougher on the husband! MY best trick to manage is to de-prioritize certain tasks that can be done after you put the kids to sleep. I work well at night and then it’s quiet on the homefront! PB: What can we expect to see from you in the next year? BG: You can expect a book: The Primal Goddess Plan and to see more motivational speaking gigs.
BG: There are going to be times when you think: A) maybe I should quit and change my lifestyle to just living in poverty because that sounds easier B) I should get a sugardaddy... just kidding C) I’m not strong enough to handle this. A true entrepreneur keeps getting creative and adopts daily life practices to boost their own morale and drive to succeed. It’s easier for me because daily I have thousands of women telling me how Buti Yoga changed their life. That makes it easier to push through the tough times!

Yoga, and Other Calming Activities BY JENNIFER RICHARD
Dedicate some time to yourself to relax, unwind, de-stress, and try doing some yoga. Around for centuries, the practice of yoga has deep spiritual ties, but also helps to alleviate health problems, align posture, and can be an integral part of physical therapy. Every single day, millions of people practice yoga to connect with themselves, and others. It binds people together from all walks of life, race, religion, and culture. Yoga has been shown to improve your mood, assist with symptoms in asthmatics, and cognitive functions. You can forget the chaos of your daily routine by doing some yoga when you get home, or by going to a centre to find YOUR center. Stretch, bend, and work on your flexibility with every day people, just like you.
body as your body rids itself of impurities through sweating. If yoga isn’t your thing, maybe try some meditation. Along the same lines of getting your mind and body to function as one, meditation allows you to focus on the real you, from the inside out. It can calm the chaos of your everyday life and allow you to be a more relaxed self. Some people just come home after a long day and turn down the lights, light some candles, and run a nice hot bath to relax. This is equally effective for a lot of people. Basically, you want to shut out the outside world for a little bit and just become one with yourself. Everyone deserves a little quiet time, everyone needs a little more calm in their lives. Find your happy place and take a moment to yourself.
Do some gentle beginners yoga if you’re just starting out and want to see what all the fuss is about, there are classes that target those with back issues and can help in flexibility restoration, there is advanced yoga for those people that have been doing it for a little longer and can master the more difficult poses and holds. There is also Hot Yoga, where the room that you’re in is heated to between 95 and 100 degrees to make it feel like a tropical environment. This aids in detoxifying the 97
ANSWERING “THE CALL” WITH DAWNA BRADLEY BY SHAWNA CYR-CALDER Being a single mother of four, Dawna Bradley knew the struggle of getting life going to where she had always envisioned it. She understood that sometimes life throws curve balls. After succeeding her own trials and tribulations and going back to school at the age of 35, she decided to give back to her community in a big way. She chose to start her own outreach program for women who on a daily basis are faced with economical challenges, such as being a single mother at a young age, women who are stuck on the roller coaster of substance abuse, elderly women receiving a low-pension, etc. Through Bradley’s charitable heart, ‘The Call’ was born, and is based in Saint John, New Brunswick. While attending University of New Brunswick in Saint John, Bradley began working at ‘First Steps’, a residential home for teen’s who are expecting, which is also based in Saint John. She eventually got promoted as coordinator for their sister program, ‘Second Steps’. When the young mother who has been residing in ‘First Steps’ is finally ready to be on her own ‘Second Steps’ will then provide the mother with an apartment and a mentor. The mentor is responsible to do regular check ins with the mother at home. After working with ‘Second Steps’ long enough, Bradley started to notice a lot of things that could be changed or added—there was a bigger demand then what First and Second Steps could offer to the community. “I noticed there was a lot more women, then First Steps could take in. I decided we needed to expand, and that’s when I branched out,” says Bradley. So on July 2013, she started her own outreach program, “The Call”. “The Call” is a mentorship/outreach program aimed towards women of all ages, instead of just young mothers. The program is directed towards women who are having difficulties on a daily basis reaching their short and/or long term goals due to obstacles that may be in their way. Obstacles such as being a single mother, or expecting a child at a young age, economical challenges passed through
98
generations, women going through transitions, elderly widow’s who receive a small pension, etc. Mentors at “The Call” go directly to their homes on a regular basis and help with some basic skills such as budgeting, cooking, cleaning, and organizing. When they get a good understanding of the woman’s home life, they can then help her figure out who she is, what her goals are in life and her passions all while identifying possible obstacles. “‘The Calls’ Ultimate goal is to help women become one with her passion and purpose,” says Bradley. They help remove some of the obstacles women are faced with, for example say a young mother wants to go back to school but isn’t confident with childcare, a mentor from “The Call” would help set up interviews and conduct criminal record checks to make sure the mother is confident enough with the woman she would have watch her child. Transportation may also be an issue, so “The Call” would advocate for her through the government to make sure she gets a bus pass. At the moment “The Call” is helping an elderly woman going through a transitional stage by helping her pay transportation fees to and from medical appointments since experiencing a severe fall. Because of the severity of her fall, she was unable to take public transit. “The Call” does their best to cover all aspects of a woman’s journey through life, and has now been incorporated as a non-profit organization since January of this year. By setting smaller more obtainable goals, it can be easier to reach your dream. With some support, a willingness to work hard and a clearer vision of what you’re aiming for, there is no stopping you. It took awhile for Bradley to overcome her own struggles to reach her own dream, but she’s hoping that with “The Call” she can help other women fight through their own barriers in a shorter amount of time.

Staying Healthy
During the Holidays BY JENNIFER RICHARD Staying healthy during the holiday season doesn’t have to be hard. You don’t have to sacrifice every sweet that passes by, you don’t have to say no to that amazing turkey dinner you were invited to, and you don’t have to subsist on celery sticks and toilet paper tacos. Portion control is key to keep you away from over indulging in all the goodies that will no doubt be offered at EVERY. SINGLE. PARTY or family function. Allow yourself to dive in to the box of truffles that are sitting on the table, just don’t eat all of them. Fill your plate with holiday turkey or ham and all of the fixings, just don’t go back for seconds. If you limit yourself to a few treats here and there, you’ll still be satisfied with having the flavors and tastes that you are craving, you just won’t feel stuffed or uncomfortable after which will give you more energy for dancing later. Pack healthy snacks. If you’re out and about, doing a lot of travelling, pack yourself some healthy treats like apples and nuts to give 100
you the energy you need instead of turning to sweet and salty calorie heavy snacks. Stay hydrated. Our bodies need water, crave it, and so you should keep it filled! Drinking your recommended dose of water daily will not only keep you feeling refreshed, it will also keep you healthier. It will also aid in keeping any flu bugs out of your system while you’re doing all that visiting! Stay fit! If you’re not much of a regular at the gym, you can still keep moving to burn off those extra calories. Walk to work or school if you are within range. Take the stairs instead of the elevator wherever possible and you’ll still feel good about yourself if you have eaten an extra cookie or piece of pie. If you ARE a regular at the gym, hit it with a buddy and work off that extra cheesecake or eggnog! You’ll be enjoying the company of a friend and it won’t seem like such a tedious task to go. A body in motion is a healthy, happy body.

Top 5 Ways to Cure A Hangover BY JENNIFER RICHARD Obviously nobody likes having a hangover, short of being the DD for the night, and with the holidays fast approaching, more of us than not will end up with one at some point. Ideally, you would prevent having one in the first place, and you can help to do so by eating before you head out for the evening. I was watching The Mindy Project earlier and she was slamming shots down at the bar in a “shot off”. Mindy was barely feeling the effects of the alcohol, while dreamy James Franco did a slow motion slam to the floor. Her secret weapon? “I ate an entire loaf of bread before I came out tonight.” Hilarious? Yes. True? Yes! Foods that are high in carbs tend to slow the absorption of alcohol into your body, making it take longer for you to get drunk. I suppose this is a bit of a catch 22 if your purpose in going out WAS to get drunk. Milk is also a great trick for avoiding a hangover. It’s said that it coats the stomach lining, also inhibiting the alcohol from being absorbed into your bloodstream. There’s not a whole lot of science behind this one, but it’s tried and true! If, as I mentioned before, you actually INTEND to get drunk, here are 5 great ways to cure a hangover. 1. Rehydrate! Get as much water into your system as you possibly can. As soon as you get home from your night out, pour yourself a large glass of water and drink the whole thing. Do the same thing when you wake up in the morning. Flat ginger ale (as we all know thanks to our moms) helps soothe an upset stomach, and orange juice will give
you a shot of energy that you probably won’t have otherwise. 2. Sleep! Sleep it off. The best cure for the spins is to finally just lay down in bed or on a couch. Anyone’s couch. Not a ditch. Not the front lawn. It may get rid of the hangover, but the shame. Oh the shame. 3. Eat a hearty breakfast or drink a smoothie filled with fruits. Bread or toast will soak up whatever alcohol remains in your system. The fruit smoothie will be filled with the vitamins and anti-oxidants that your body needs. Most people I speak with swear by the grease the next day. A big ol’ dirty McDonald’s breakfast or something from your local diner should do the trick. 4. Go outside. Fresh air not only rejuvenates you and your skin, it will do wonders for your hungover soul. “Oxygen increases the rate that alcohol toxins are broken down.” The exercise will also release endorphins so get that withered butt outside and get some air! 5. Pain Meds. Tylenol, Advil, whatever you have in the house that might help alleviate some of the pressure in your head and the aches in your dance ravaged body, take a couple and chill out for the rest of the day. Lounge on the couch, pop in a movie, and work off that night of cocktails and dance moves. 103
