Women, Wisdom and Wellness Jobs Jobs Jobs, This is something that we can’t get away from. We all need jobs. We are all looking for that Balance in life. We want to spend more time with our families but the job, gotta get the job, go to the job. The job isn’t paying the bills get another job. There is a better way! All you need is push personal limiting beliefs aside and believe in yourself. Today’s economy is shifting away from the days of working hard for a company for life and get rewarded for your loyalty. More and more women in high paying positions are getting laid off in favor of hiring someone fresh out of school that will do twice the work for half the pay. Raise your hand right where you sit if you have seen this happen. It’s ok, smile at the people looking at you funny. We are living in a new economy, not a downed one or a recession/depression. Do you think the job market is coming back? Not the one that you recognize. What everybody was brought up to believe is safe, is the new risky. In today’s job market, working for someone else is the scariest thing in the world. Layoffs are coming by the truckload. There is no such thing as job security anymore. Putting your life, your families life in someone else’s hands... Scary stuff. Moving people from full time to part time so there are no benefits Doing the same job for less money Then asking for you to do more, work more hours for the same money. Is this starting to sound familiar? Understanding WHY Network Marketing is a better way. Every single one of you should be running a home based business. Do you know why? Having a home based business not only generates extra cash flow, but it also gives you tax breaks. You can write off part of your home, hydro bill, insurance, gas.. This will lower your taxable income. What this means for you. Lower tax brackets, getting money at tax time rather than owing it. People are afraid of the network marketing profession
because they are or have met someone who joined a company, didn’t follow through with the training, didn’t treat it as a business then failed. If we get a job working for a company, don’t work according to the manual and get fired...Do we blame the company structure or the employee? The employee naturally. This alone should start to strike a cord about how we perceive one thing with one set of rules, while another thing with a completely different set of rules. It’s time for consistency. There are different options for these businesses. Avon and Mary Kay are networking marketing companies. They have been around a while and are successful. Who has never met the Avon lady? Network marketing companies are all around you. Let your guard down and allow yourself to take a look at what some of them have to offer. Really they all offer the same thing. - Extra income to pay the bills and have some left over - A team environment to make you be as successful as you want to be - Personal development training that helps in all areas of your life - Time freedom. The ability to spend more time with family and friends. Find a company that has some people / products that you can feel passionate about and get started. If you follow through with belief in yourself, the world becomes open. “Whether you believe that you can or can’t, you’re right” Henry Ford It is becoming that time to consider new possibilities. As Morpheus says “ Blue pill or Red pill”

PinkBlitz Must Do’s October is here and we’re approaching the holiday season! Thanksgiving and Halloween are on their way, so here’s a few things we recommend: 1. Turkeys are expensive! Keep an eye on the flyers and don’t be fooled by sales of $1.99 per pound. They always go down to $0.99 sometime beforehand! 2. Homemade costumes are great money savers on Halloween, but you can also find pretty cheap costumes online! Check it out! 3. Host a rockin’ Halloween party! As we get older, if we don’t have kids to take out, Halloween becomes sort of lame. It doesn’t have to, party it up!

The leaves are starting to turn, the temperature is dropping, and Fall is upon us. Instead of groaning and moaning that Summer is over, think of all the fabulous outfits you can now bring back out of your closet! Think of all of the new clothes that you can buy! Warm cozy sweaters, knee high boots, scarves, comfortable trousers and dark denim. In February of 2014, New York Fashion Week had already chosen their “it” colors for Fall, runways all over were bursting with colors that are not typical for Fall. Pastels, greens,

Radiant Orchid which is a pop of color blending fuchsia and a paler pink. Cypress; a forest green blend that will make you feel like taking a walk in the forest, Misted Yellow that is reminiscent of a muted gold color, minus the metallic, and Bright Cobalt, a deep, steely blue that will make any outfit sing.

FEATHERS, FURS & PRINTS:
Making Trends Work For YOU BY Jennifer richard
Fashion trends come and go, and this Fall will be no different. This years’ offerings include faux furs, chunky knits, leopard prints, metallics, florals and lace, and a comeback of mod 60’s prints and design. You don’t need to drape yourself head to toe in any one of these, but adding a little oomph to your outfit will make you feel sassy, sexy, and put together.

Faux fur is also going to be a stellar fashion trend this year. Uggs are out, but finding a sexy winter boot with a faux fur lining will be easy. What’s In, What’s Out BY SCOTT MCLEAN
October is here and I think we all know what’s coming… winter. Winter is like that annoying friend that you hate to hang out with but don’t have the heart to tell them. You can only ignore texts for so long until your conscience hits and you schedule your yearly “because I have to” coffee date. Winter is everyone’s “because I have to” coffee date. The best way to accept that winter is creeping up on us is not with psychological therapy but with retail therapy. Nothing will get you ready and even excited for winter more than a fabulous new winter coat. That is why I’m going to tell you what is in my opinion “In” and what’s “Out” for winter outerwear. Out Puffer Jackets – Yes they are warm, and yes they are practical but they are also tired, unshapely, and the most basic (not in a good way) winter look you can go for. Unfortunately puffer jackets are available in every color, length, and even offer belted or unbelted as options but no belt or color can make this look fashionable in my opinion. There are so many other warm yet fashionable looks for winter coats that there is no need to go the puffer route. If the unbeatable warmth of a puffer coat is something you can’t seem to let go of than opt for a more subtle puff option.
and I couldn’t be happier. They had their time but their time is up. Brand specific fads can be tricky to follow especially when at a higher price point. They are all the rage one season than passé the next. Just like many other fads that are brand specific (ie. Von Dutch Hats) this one went strong last year but has burnt out like Mariah Carey circa 2001. Unlike Mariah Carey, I don’t think Canada Goose will be making a comeback anytime soon. In
XL Coats – This winter when it comes to wool Mackage specializes in subtle and fashionable and pea style coats oversized is the way to puffer jackets that are not so offensively puffy go. You can thank Kim K. for this trend and it is yet give you all the warmth you need. They one of the chicest looks this season. also have leather and fur details which will have you looking fabulous through the winter To pull off this look there are a few things that months. have to be flawless so you don’t come off looking like you lost 84 lb. and couldn’t buy a Canada Goose – In my opinion the trend of new jacket. wearing a Canada Goose winter jacket is out 22
The shoulder seam should fall just below your actual shoulder, the lapels should be long and on the larger side, and the length should be anywhere from lower thigh to mid calf. This style of coat looks amazing in a variety of colors such as navy, cream, beige, and ox blood. If you’re feeling more adventurous and enjoy a more glamorous winter look, than go for a coat in a short fur like mohair. This will keep you the best dressed even in the coldest of temperatures. Fur – This is an homage to the late Joan Rivers who looked glamorous and dressed flawless until her recent death. She was a fur lover and was a perfect example of how to wear fur tastefully and look amazing doing it. Now before I talk about this controversial trend I will give you my opinion on fur. I think fur is classic, glamorous, and always ontrend when done right and kept tasteful. I’m an animal lover and definitely do not agree with or support many fur distributors out there. That is why you must be responsible and educate yourself before going down the fur route. In my opinion fur is great as long as you research where the fur is coming from, buy vintage fur or wear fur that has been passed down to you, or buy from a fur repurposing boutique. Fur is and always has been on trend and is a staple for any glamorous look. If you want a glam fur look that is more affordable and is guilt free than there are some very chic and well done faux fur options out there. A full fur jacket is the ultimate in chic looks and cannot be beaten. It will have you staying warm and looking like an “it girl” all season and for years to come. If a full fur look is not for you than opt for a fur trimmed jacket or a fur hood to keep you warm. www.polyvore.com

Ask the Stylist: Scott McLean What are your favorite DIY Halloween costumes? Now I’m not the handiest person but I do love to make a good DIY costume. One of my favorite costumes I’ve seen for women is a pearl or “Lady Pearl”. This might sound a bit odd but it’s an easy and chic costume anyone can make. The base of this costume is really up to you. You can wear any cream ensemble like a cream dress or a skirt and top combo. I’m envisioning a flowy blouse with a cute flared skirt. As long as it’s cute and cream anything will do. You than deck yourself out in pearls (real or fake depending on your drink consumption). Earrings, hair clips, an obscene amount of pearl necklaces, bracelets, and rings will do the trick. I’m picturing a cute up-do for this look. You’ll be sexy, classy, and original in this costume. You’re welcome.
All you need is a fitted blazer, neutral colored skinny pants or leggings, a high boot with no heel or faux boot tops (found at most costume shops), and a whip. You can add a riding helmet if you can find one and aren’t worried about your hair. I chose to go helmetAnother costume idea that’s not only less. This is a chic costume that was a original but also unisex is an equestrian success for me and you won’t have to or Horse Jockey. This one is pretty easy worry about having an awkward bitch and is one that I’ve done in the past. stole my look moment at any party. 24
If I don’t want to dress up for a Halloween party, what can I wear to still look “in the spirit of Halloween?
Model: Amanda Boss Photographer: Ed Bowron
I’m glad this question is being asked. I know it’s only once a year but I see people going through this day wearing black and orange and I find it offensive. There are cuter and trendier options than wearing black and orange. One option would be to go the skull route. Skulls are cute all year round but just happen to be perfect for October 31st. You could wear skull jewelry or a skull printed top which will keep you in the spirit of things. When choosing skulls I tend to enjoy sugar skull inspired prints. Another option would be to wear studs. This is a trend that I find to be a little tired but is perfectly acceptable for Halloween. I feel spiked studs are over but a more subtle flat stud is fine for this occasion. You could wear a jacket with studs, studded jeans, or studded jewelry.

Plaid. It’s not just for hipsters and lumberjacks anymore. Although it was never truly obsolete, plaid is making a major comeback this year. Seen on all of the major fashion runways, in women’s fashion with pieces that will outfit you from head to toe, on the GQ runway for men, and for toddlers and school age children alike, plaid is the hippest pattern for Fall 2014. Obviously plaid was huge in the 90’s. Most of us remember Kurt Cobain, almost a pioneer for all of us who were teens in that particular time, TLC, with Left Eye always having her plaid shirt tied around her waist, and Alanis Morissette in her “Too Hot” video, sporting the same look. And really, who can forget Clueless?! This year, plaid is back in a big way. Le Château, for example, is filled with plaid shirts, skirts, socks, and handbags, dresses, pants, fedoras, and shoes. H&M has a gorgeous selection of plaid shirts and blouses, and Forever 21 is “Mad for Plaid”. You can wear your plaid shirt casually, layering it over a graphic tee and a pair of slim cut jeans, or you can choose to dress it up; cinching it at the waist with a skinny belt to add a little depth to a pair of black leggings and flats or knee high boots. Head to toe plaid is a definite no-no, but you can use one main item as your statement piece. A gorgeous plaid shirtdress will make you stand out in the crowd, a fitted button down plaid blouse will shout casual chic, and a loose fitting plaid shirt gives you that “I’m wearing my boyfriends’ top and I look amazing” feel. No matter how you choose to wear YOUR plaid, comfort is key. Rock it in flannel, silk, satin, or cotton for a throwback to the 90’s that everyone is on board with this season.

You get the invite in the mail. You open your email and see the e-vite. The text comes through. Party! Wedding! Bar-B-Q, New Year’s Eve! The wheels start turning. What on earth are you going to wear? What’s appropriate? What’s not? The times they are a changin’, what was once thought of as perfect party wear is now opening up into a broader spectrum of choices; you’re not obligated to wear that little black dress to a cocktail party, you don’t have to wear shorts and a t-shirt to a Summer BBQ, weddings aren’t all just black tie anymore. Here’s a quick rundown of party dress for some important occasions, making all of your hard decisions a little easier to make. Cocktail Party/Engagement Party/Soirée: While the classic cocktail dress is still and will always be in style, you’re not obligated to stick to the “rules” for this type of gathering. The modern cocktail party or soirée can stretch from full dressy occasion to a casual get together with your girlfriends. Your clothing range can be little black (or other colored) dress or a sleek trouser with a tailored top, both paired with a heel or a cute flat. You will however, want to stay away from fabrics that are TOO casual, like denim, flannel, or jersey. Think sleek fabrics, like silk and cashmere, satin and fine wools.

Backyard Party/BBQ Fashion rules are pretty lax for this type of gathering. A stunning maxi dress is sure to turn heads, and the classic short and top combo is always a winner. Pair either with a cute flip flop, a ballet flat, or a sleek gladiator sandal to tie your breezy Summer look together. Holiday Party/Festive Occasion Here, you’re able to broaden your horizons with regards to fashion choices. Holiday Parties aren’t so strict anymore that you’re “supposed” to wear certain items or a certain length. Midi and mini length dresses are a great option since the 60’s Mod look is making a comeback. A simple black dress paired with a red shoe for a pop of color and sequins on your dresses and tops are all going to be big this season. Pair a pant suit with a sexy heel for a polished, pulled together look. Add some gold or silver accent pieces and you’ve won over the party circuit. No matter what the occasion, fashion rules are more relaxed this season; pull some of your favorite pieces out of your closet, go shop for a few new items, borrow from your gal pals, just get out there and have a blast!

Your shoes can make or break your outfit. Let’s be honest; sleek new dress, to die for earrings, the coolest cuff bracelet, a matching clutch, and Chucks. Nope, doesn’t work. You want to match the personality of your outfit with your shoes. They don’t have to be sky high stilettos, but let’s face it, your shoes tell a story. This years’ runways have been filled with an amazing array of shoes. From an avant-garde look, to your everyday classic heels, there’s a little something for everyone looking to add a little sass to their outfit. This season seems to lend itself to the strappy heel, whether it’s a 6” stiletto or a shorter height, the straps are in. T-straps, ankle straps, all the way up the leg straps, you’re sure to find something to suit you with a sexy looking strap. Chanel has put out a line of stunning lace up winter boots this year with a very minimal heel and faux fur lined innards to add to another hot trend this year.
The Best Sassy Heel BY JENNIFER RICHARD Thicker clog like heels are also hot right now, on everything from boots, to an espadrille. These heels will give us wobbly folk some stability, especially if you love heels but can’t wear them without falling down. Booties are in as well. You can pair these with jeans and a casual top as well as a simple dress, depending on your mood. The heels on the booty range from nearly flat all the way up to 6 inches. Don’t forget full length boots either, Tom Ford has shown a stunning croc skin looking boot with a sexy metallic stiletto heel that would look amazing with pretty much anything you have in your closet. No matter if you’re a nearly flat to the ground type of gal or a sky high heel kind of lady, size does matter, just check out your calves as you flaunt your stuff in front of that mirror!

Sitting down with Liz Black A COLUMN & INTERVIEW BY CASEY DONOVAN Hiya Ladies, This month I caught up with the stunningly beautiful “P.S. It’s Fashion” - Liz Black while she was in Australia. New Yorker Liz Black has been writing professionally since 2007, mostly about fashion, and is now a renowned and respected plus size blogger and fashion writer. Liz attends New York Fashion Week in September and February and is a regular at most VIP events. Liz recently released “The X Collection” in conjunction with the Australian based online dress site “Fame & Partners” who specialise in fashions and formal wear for Plus Size girls. Liz loves to write, she loves fashion and ultimately plans to spend her life doing something involving both! Well, now Liz Black can add clothing designer to her CV! It was an honour to meet Liz in Sydney recently and spend some time talking with her about fashion, writing and following your dreams. 34
How are you enjoying Australia? “I love it so far, I really wish I’d had an opportunity to explore a little bit more, I’ve been super busy, dealing with the collection, but Australia is fantastic! Everyone is really, really nice, super sweet and friendly, I feel like I fit in very well here.” How did the collaboration come about between you and Fame & Partners? “I came across them via a PR company in New York who sent out a press release regarding a dress collaboration that had been done with another blogger who was a straight size blogger and I noticed that Fame & Partners goes all the way up to a size 22 US (26 AUS) so I was like “Whoa! Are they going to do this with a plus size blogger?” I mean, it seemed like a golden opportunity. So it just kind of started from there. It started with me designing one dress to two dresses and it’s now a collection of eleven! Two of the dresses are original designs and the other ones are dresses that were already in the collection that I made specific tweaks to, to make them a little bit more plus size friendly. My feelings are, plus size women want the
exact same thing that the straight size women have! We just want it in our size. But, so many brands just grade it up and it turns the outfits into big shapeless sack and it’s just not the same look. I just wanted to make sure that these dresses would be just as flattering and have the same general aesthetic but by doing something as simple as lowering the length of a lining so instead of it hit the upper thigh it would hit just below the knee so you can wear your shape wear shorts with it, My thoughts are if I’m wearing formal wear I kinda want to hold everything in and I want to feel comfortable all night. I don’t want my spanks peaking out! Altering the design slightly such as putting a little bit more support in for the bust, putting in a strap, things like that, so we’re not covering people up and turning dresses into turtle necks, but altering them slightly just so you can feel really comfortable wearing them. Fame & Partners were committed to a plus size collection, keen to work with me and think about all these things. They really care about their customer, not just the bottom line. They want women to feel beautiful and happy in their clothes and I can’t believe the price range for these formal dresses! It’s very
affordable formal wear. It must feel absolutely amazing to say “I’ve designed two of those dresses”. Yes!! (Giggles)
that is the only thing you do, you shouldn’t be put down for that.
I have a very strong writing background before I even started blogging. I have written Did you ever think you would be designing for the Huffington Post and other magazines in clothes? the US and I do all the Plus Fashion coverage “No, But I really wanted too! I’m so happy that I can breathe on my own and I can walk on my own, I have a healthy body and my numbers are good - it feels good knowing all those things. I think I look good in these clothes! Interview with
Nia Peeples INTERVIEWED BY LILLY BABINEAU
40
Pinkblitz Magazine Editor in Chief Lilly Babineau had the opportunity to chat with Nia Peeples. Aside from being a world renowned musical talent, Nia is a brilliant actress seen on many things. Most recently, she plays the role of “Pam Fields” on Pretty Little Liars. PB: You’ve been in a variety of different types of television shows. General Hospital, Fame, the Young & the Restless, to Walker, Texas Ranger, Courthouse, Crisis Center and more recently, Pretty Little Liars. Was it a difficult transition to go from playing one part to another? NP: No, that’s the fun of it, it takes a lot of work but I’ve been doing it for 30 years, and spent a lot of time in acting class. It’s what we love to do. PB: You clearly have a passion for singing and acting, is there anything else you feel very passionate about that perhaps your fans don’t know about you? NP: I’m a martial artist. Other than that, it depends on the generation of fans. I’m big into wellness. This business is very image conscious, and people tend to make it impressive to be healthy. People look at you like you have some kind of secret. [In regards to other things I’m passionate about] I don’t think there’s only one answer, it’s in each person. Each person is so unique that every answer is unique.
PB: What has been your favorite role thus far? What makes it stand out to you? NP: That’s a tough question! I’d have to say the most impactful one was the role I had on Fame. I say that because of where I was in my life. You’re experiencing things through your character that is really about you. In terms of overall impact, it was Fame. It was set in NYC, and it was like Glee, only edgier. PB: Let’s talk for a bit about Pretty Little Liars. You play Pam Fields, a military wife and mother to Shay’s character Emily. Was there anything you found particularly challenging about that role? NP: There were a few things. One, Pam and Nia are very different. I’m old fashioned but also liberal. Old fashioned in a romantic way. I don’t have an issue with the gay community like Pam did. The challenge was to find a truth in there that Pam and Nia shared. I found that, the truth IS that there are things I believe
now that I didn’t before. There have been times where I clung to things that I believed in and then stepped back and thought it out. The way Pam felt about Emily’s coming out, it was really out of her deep love for her daughter. She really believed it was wrong, a bad influence and not natural. Those feeling came natural to me because of the love of her daughter. The pain she felt to see Emily going in that direction, I could get. Pam isn’t a regular character on the show. My storyline doesn’t always make the most sense, but I just need to let it go and not always have the answer. Things come and go and I can’t sometimes make sense of it. Why things would happen and Pam wouldn’t be there. It’s a huge undertaking what they’re doing, there’s so many recurring characters. So I get it, but it’s tough as an actor. PB: Playing a mom whose daughter is the target to an anonymous psychopath, if you were in a similar situation in real life, would you react the same as Pam did or different?
42
NP: Differently. I would be much more hands on. I would have moved my daughter out of town, and this really goes against what the PLL fans want to hear. But, if a psycho was after my daughter, yea. Period. I do care about her friends, but her life in danger, yea. Her friendships may not last that long. We like to think all the PLL’s will be friends forever, but as a parent it’s my job to keep her physically safe first. I would certainly know more about what’s going on. PB: What can we expect to see from you in the next year? NP: It’s been an interesting journey. I’m 52, and I’m at a stage in my life where I feel like I’ve outgrown the things I’m doing. The challenges aren’t there and I feel like I have a lot more to offer up. I’ve been working to develop my website, I have a 12 part video serious. Guest starring on other shows, looking for interesting roles to keep that alive. Biggest thing is wellness, and the Elements of Life.

HEADBANDS OF HOPE’S
Jessica Ekstrom INTERVIEWED BY LILLY BABINEAU Pinkblitz Magazine Editor in Chief Lilly Babineau had the opportunity to interview Jessica Ekstrom, founder of Headbands of Hope. When you buy a headband, one gets donated to a child with cancer, and $1 from sales is given to a cancer charity. PB: Tell us about the history of Headbands of Hope. Was there ever a “lightbulb” or “defining” moment when you said “I need to do this”? JE: When I was in college, right before my 20th birthday in the summer of 2011, I did an internship at a wish-granting organization. Every day, I got to wake up and grant the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses. I took day trips to visit the wish kids at their houses and bring them their favorite toys. We received hundreds of letters from wish children that said we changed their lives; little did they know, they were changing mine.
of their feminine identity. Therefore I started Headbands of Hope. For every headband purchased, one is given to a girl with cancer and $1 is donated to fund childhood cancer research.
One day, I was pulling my hair back in a ponytail and thought about the hundreds of girls I encountered that lose their hair to cancer. I saw how much losing their hair had an impact on their self-esteem and confidence level. I thought about the thousands of girls around the world losing their hair to chemotherapy. Being a young girl presents many struggles with self-esteem already and losing their hair as a result of a life-threatening illness is traumatic. Not only do they have to face the risk of losing their lives, they feel that they lose a part

PB: What has been your favorite moment in all of this? JE: There are too many favourite moments to count! But one in particular stands out… I received a letter from a mom before whose daughter received a headband in the hospital. Her daughter was starting kindergarten soon and didn’t want to go to school because her hair hadn’t grown back and she didn’t want the kids to think she was a boy. Her mom said when she got her headband in the hospital, she laid out her kindergarten outfit that night with her backpack and all her school supplies. She said from that moment on, her daughter felt confident enough to go to school and embrace who she was. PB: Where are you at right now, and how have things changed since you first started out? JE: Every day is a learning process. I’ve never woken up one morning and felt I had everything figured out, but that’s the great part about running a business. You should never feel 100% comfortable. If you feel relaxed and comfortable all the time, you’re not challenging yourself enough. Through the years we’ve made so much growth and learned a ton, but I’ll never be done learning. PB: Your company is only a couple years old and you’ve already seen so much growth! How did you do it? Where do you want to be in 5 years? JE: If you believe in what you’re doing, it’s easy to express that to others. It doesn’t feel like we’re trying to be sales people and push products on our customers. Our marketing approach is very natural: buy a headband and help kids’ cancer. People don’t feel forced into buying our headbands, they want to! In 5 years, I hope Headbands of Hope isn’t around anymore because I hope there’s a cure for cancer. But in the meantime, we’re going to do everything we can to make every child with cancer feel beautiful.
PB: How do you choose colours and designs for your headbands? Where do you seek style inspiration? JE: We love taking feedback and suggestions from our audience. Playing with designs and colors is the fun part! We want to make styles appealing to our older demographic as well as kids and babies. Sometimes we hop on trends, and sometimes we create our own. PB: What’s your advice to young girls or entrepreneurs trying to start something fashion or business-wise? JE: Before you take another step, sit down and figure out your definition of success. What does success look like to you? I’ll tell you right now, it’s not going to come from a paycheck, a position title, beating a competitor or any kind of tangible achievement. You can appreciate those as milestones that you’re on the right path, but don’t confuse them for success. Think about waking up every day. What will make you excited to get out of bed? Discover a clear connection between what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. Once you have that, work won’t feel like work.

Hair & Makeup: First Date BY KRISTINA MALLET
eyelashes. You never know where your date will end up, and the last thing you’re going to want to have happen, is everything fall out/off. You shouldn’t be worrying about anything on a first date, except your date. Hope these tips helped! Now get out there and rock it!
You’ve finally got the number of that hottie you have been scoping out for a while. You’ve been texting and he finally asks you out! Now it’s time to get ready! Here are a few key tips to remember to do for hair and makeup for your first date: 1. Find out what you are doing. If your guy can’t seem to decide, or just wants to play it by ear, then pick a simple yet elegant look. High ponytails and cat eyeliner and lips are prefect for this scenario because you are dressed up enough to be out on the town, yet easy going enough if you’re just staying in somewhere quite. 2. If you don’t like having your hair all pulled back, try a style that is somewhat pulled away from your face. This way your date can see your entire face and they won’t feel like your hiding behind your hair. Also, it is a great way to make sure your hair stays out of your food. 3. You don’t always have to go with the hottest trends on a first date. In fact, you will probably want to stay away from it. I’m all for showing your true self, but you won’t want any distractions from the first date itself. If you like makeup, tone it down for the even with soft neutral colors, light mascara, and a light and subtle lip color. 4. Try and stay away from the “falsies”. Be it hair extensions, or fake 54 58

First things first, wash your face. But don’t stop at a cleanser, make sure you have a good toner and moisturizer to back up the benefits of cleansing. You want to use mild products to not damage or dry out the skin and make sure they are non-comedogenic. This means they won’t clog your pores, clear pores=glowing skin! Use products with light reflecting technology. These are often in serums that are applied under your day and night creams, but sometimes you can find a day cream with this technology. Some eye contour products will have a shimmer in them as well, this reflects light to diffuse unpleasant spots, dark circles and dull skin tones. Exfoliate once a week. This clears your pores of any excess oils and dirt as well as dead cells that rest on the outermost layer of the skin. Once this layer of cells is removed your skin can breathe and absorb treatment products better than when your pores are clogged. Your skin will reflect the light and literally glow when it is exfoliated and moisturized. Make sure to add a gentle scrub to your routine once a week. Roses for Radiance. Try adding a facial toner or moisturizer with essential oils of rose for added suppleness and radiance. If you can’t find an actual product with rose essential oil, try a steam bath with rose petals. You can do this in a bath tub and soak in it or fill a bowl with steaming hot water and add enough rose petals to cover the top. Next, drape a towel over your head above the water so you’re in direct path of the steam, and let your face steam for 10-15 minutes. The steam is now infused with the rose petals making it a luxurious skin treatment for a radiant glow. Use complementary colors when choosing a blush. Those with cool skin tones have a bluepink undertone (check your wrist, what color do you see? blue-pink or yellow olive?), these undertones should be paired up with a blush that is cool like pinks and mauves. Warm tones
have yellow-olive tones and should be paired with warm colors, like corals and peaches. Rule of Thumb: If you’re unsure if you’re a cool or warm, look in a mirror and hold up a silver cloth just under your chin and then again with a gold cloth. Whichever cloth makes your complexion look more lively and fresh is the tone you should go with, silver=cool and gold =warm. And this tip goes without saying, eat clean and drink plenty of water throughout your day. This will keep your skin hydrated from the insideout, preventing dehydration and premature aging. The saying “eat the rainbow” isn’t just for balanced nutrition, the colorful fruits and vegetables are high in antioxidants and necessary vitamins for skin cells! Foods high in Vitamin A allow for an increased cell turnover rate resulting in healthy, wrinkle-free, glowing skin! There you have it, my top tips to achieve the healthy glow you’ve been searching for! 63

Top 5 Ways to Make You
Look Younger! BY PRESLEY MCGLASHING
One of the main questions I get asked is “What do I need to do to get younger looking skin”, or “What can I do for dark spots and wrinkles?” Here are my top 5 tips to answer those questions and more to achieve healthier, younger-looking skin: 1. Don’t skip your night routine! I cannot stress this enough! If you’re only going to wash your face once a day, do it at night. Leftover makeup can settle into fine lines, clog pores, trap bacteria and pollution which causes breakouts and a dull complexion. Washing your face with a mild cleanser clears pores and allows your skin to absorb the toner and any night care treatments you will apply. Your cells regenerate 30% more when you are sleeping, so try adding a serum to your night regime to boost the effect of your night cream. 2. A+C+Omega-3 = the Fountain of Youth! Vitamin A increases cell turnover in the skin for smoother, glowing skin, while Vitamin C is responsible for collagen and elastin production for a plump, wrinkle-free and radiant complexion. Omega-3s help to do the rest by keeping the skin hydrated and restoring oil levels in the skin to prevent moisture loss and dry, flaky skin cells that will clog pores and decrease product absorption. Quick tip: Smoking one cigarette will deplete the body of its entire daily Vitamin C levels which is why smokers tend to age faster. The better you take care of your body on the inside, the younger your skin looks on the outside!
oils and essential oil based products. Use a facial oil in place of a serum under your night cream and you are good to go! Clarins have particularly great facial oils for each skin type, or you can easily make your own using a dime size amount of jojoba oil or grape seed oil and 1-2 drops of any essential oil. I recommend jasmine essential oil or carrot seed oil. Never apply essential oils directly to the skin without a carrier oil. 4. Give yourself a facial. Facials at a spa are most effective due to the massage. Massage stimulates circulation in the skin to better absorb facial products. To do this at home, use your oil mixture mentioned above and gentle fingertips to massage around the face making sure not the drag the skin downward. Stop after 5 or so minutes, or until your face is pinkish-red in color and apply a mask or night cream. Repeat the massage nightly for optimal results.
5. Pick your active ingredients according to your skin problems. If you have trouble with age spots, choose a product with Vitamin C and Kojic Acid. These ingredients will help to brighten the skin and lighten dark spots for a more even complexion. For deep wrinkles try Retinol (or sometimes Retinoic Acid, Retinoid, and Retin-A), this ingredient will exfoliate the first layer of the epidermis (outermost layer of skin) to remove buildup of dead cells and increase cell turnover for smoother, less visible lines. If you’re looking to prevent or treat small skin blemishes, like minimal dark spots and very fine lines, use Glycolic Acid. This is great for those who are beginning an anti-aging 3. Oils are your friend. In the past oil was a bad regimen and need to start slow and work up thing to have in skin care, but now studies have to retinols. shown that skin responds very well to plant

Chad Michael Collins Interviewed By Lilly Babineau Chad Michael Collins is an actor in Los Angeles, California. Most known for his role as Brandon Beckett in the new movie Sniper: Legacy opposite Tom Berenger, he has also appeared in episodes of CSI, Castle, Blue Bloods, 2 Broke Girls, Once Upon A Time, and More! PB: How did you get started with acting? Who PB: What challenges did you face along the way to becoming an actor? How did you were your major influences and why? overcome them? CMC: I became an actor by accident. I moved to LA as a journalism major grad CMC: You can’t throw a rock and not hit and got started doing entertainment public an actor in the face in LA; there are literally relations – personal publicity for actors and hundreds of thousands of them here. So I entertainers. Several years into that career, a think the biggest challenge for me, even in well-known talent manager we shared a client my early successes as I was very much still with asked me if I was an actor, which I wasn’t learning about acting, was that feeling of in any way, shape or form. She suggested I unworthiness about it all. I struggled with the try a class, as she was interested in seeing if fact that so many actors moved here with it took. Eventually, it did, although I treated only one dream, one goal in mind, and that it more as a hobby for years than anything was to be an actor, and here I am, with no I’d ever do seriously. But now, obviously, I’m Julliard training, not a single stage play under all in! I think if it wasn’t for the fact that I was my belt – you inevitably ask yourself “well obsessively watching HBO’s “Band of Brothers” who am I to find success when they can’t? I at the time of her asking, I might have just haven’t paid my dues, I’m not good enough,” dismissed her suggestion as some light flattery. etc, the same fear-based drivel that always But I think, more than any particular actor, it gets in the way. I think I overcame it through a was my childhood love for all things GI Joes combination of becoming more confident as that made me always wonder how cool it a person, as a man, and with my acting ability. would be to get paid to be a pretend soldier, I’ve arrived at a place where I believe there’s crawling through the mud, keeping the free enough for everyone, and made peace with world safe. And now I know: pretty damn cool. the fact that no, I’m not Brad Pitt…but Brad Pitt isn’t me, either. Take that, Brad Pitt! 77
PB: You’ve co-starred with some great actors/ actresses! What has been your favorite role so far? Why?
in SNIPER: LEGACY – it’s a thrill for me, as I grew up loving action films like the original SNIPER, Stallone and Schwarzeneggar flicks, and of course the awesome-yet-ridiculous ROAD HOUSE with the late Patrick Swayze. Any time I get a chance to shoot a gun, fight a bad guy, and be a hero, I’m game – I love the physical roles more than any others. I think playing ‘Frankenstein’s Monster’ on ABC’s “Once Upon a Time” was one of my favorites too, playing a regular character and then the reanimated monstrous version of him, all in black-and-white. The makeup and FX for the character were incredible, and that was a new experience for me.
CMC: Yes, I’ve had the blessing to really work with some great veteran actors on set and grow in that sense, instead of endless hours on a stage in acting class. And I’m a sponge – I love picking the brains of these successful, battle-tested professionals. I always ask them for stories, and tell them from the get-go that I’m open to any tips, advice or pointers they can give me. But there’s so much to be learned from them through observation, not just in the way they act, but in the way they handle themselves both on and off a set. You pick up on what not to do much more often PB: You’ve also made a name for yourself as than you pick up on what to do, but both are a Public Relations agent. What has been your favorite part of that so far? valuable lessons. I’ve also been blessed to work on some really great movies and shows, in some amazing parts. Anytime I get to play a soldier – SNIPER: RELOADED, COMPANY OF HEROES, and now
CMC: Yes, it’s been an interesting journey – I don’t know any other actor who’s had a remotely similar journey, from publicist to actor. I still actually do the PR part-time in

between gigs, because it’s such a great way to network and make new contacts in the industry, and to just keep learning about the business. That side of the equation has really helped me understand and incorporate the business aspects of an acting career, because at the end of the day, it is a business, yet so few actors treat it as such. The PR has always had its perks: the parties, the red carpets, the open bars, and making friends and having access to the players that very few do. And, of course, when I’ve got a great project coming out, it certainly doesn’t hurt to have a few dozen media contacts on speed-dial!
on DVD and digital HD. Tom Berenger, who starred as the original franchise lead across the first three films, returns for this fifth installment, which I think is going to be the best since the original. I play the estranged son to Berenger’s legendary Marine sniper, a character that’s become a pretty badass shooter himself. This is an action movie through and through; a lot of guns, a lot of hand-to-hand combat, and beautiful locations that include Greece and the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria.
Also this fall, I’ll be guest starring on ABC’s “Castle” and FOX’s “Bones,” which I just finished shooting. Both were fun roles, and PB: What projects are you working on right those shows are long-running hits for a reason, so it was great to be a part them both. I’m also now? currently attached to star in an indie WWII film CMC: I’ve got a bunch of fun projects coming called FATAL CROSSROADS, currently in the out this fall, the biggest of which is my return to crowdfunding and pre-production stage, in the Sony SNIPER franchise to reprise my lead January 2015. role for SNIPER: LEGACY, out September 30th
PB: What advice do you have for other people wanting to get into similar fields? CMC: Well, my road to acting success was pretty unique, and I didn’t even take an acting class until I was in my mid-20s, so I think that can serve as one of those “anything’s possible” examples. My biggest piece of advice would have to be about mindset. Acting is a business where you’re constantly facing rejection: from casting directors, agents, managers, teachers, and more. You’ll hear a lot of “no’s” before you hear a “yes,” so having unshakeable confidence in yourself, knowing that you’re good enough, and believing that you are worthy of success are crucial to building a career. It wasn’t until I embraced that at an intrinsic, fundamental level that I was really able to find success, let go, and just have fun with it while not being attached to any outcome. I think it’s sound advice for anyone looking to do anything – get that mind, body and spirit connected and there’s nothing you can’t do!

10 Things Critical in your Relationship BY ANGELA VINCENT

Sometimes, I look at friends and family members who are in long-term, satisfying relationships and wonder how, in a time when so many marriages end in divorce, they manage to keep going strong. The fact is, happy couples generally share some basic, core values. What characteristics can determine whether your relationship will past the test of time? I’ve listed 10 below.
before, “Well, the only reason I did it is because YOU always...”. Couples that last learn how to admit that they messed up, apologize, and move on.
6. Compromise: This goes without saying. You can’t have a successful relationship without understanding that it isn’t realistic to expect to have your way all of the time, every time. They believe in their value. 5. Responsibility: Happy couples are accountable. They take responsibility for their screw-ups and don’t try to pass or share blame. We’ve all heard an excuse like this 85
Why Men REALLY Don’t Want to Get
MARRIED BY ANGELA VINCENT
We are living in a time when more and more men (and women) are choosing to forego the traditional institution of marriage and opting instead for the eternal bachelorhood or cohabitation without the commitment of marriage. The question is, why? What factors are contributing to the trend of more and more men choosing the single life? With more and more women pursuing careers outside the home, traditional gender roles are becoming less rigid. As a result, there is much less social pressure to marry. Even in our grandparents’ time, a man was expected to work and provide for his wife and children. A woman was expected to stay home, raise children, prepare meals, and manage the household. Today, a majority of women contribute financially and men are much more active in household and childcare duties. A blurring of these gender lines has resulted in less pressure to marry. Another reason more men are shying away from tying the knot is the often massive financial risk associated with marriage. Divorce can be costly, often more so if the ex-wife is granted custody of any children. Since more than 50% of first marriages end in divorce, many men are choosing to avoid gambling away their financial future. Also, the current trend toward lavish, expensive weddings is often a huge turn-off. Spending thousands of dollars on one day is understandably very unappealing to many men. 86
Many men are reluctant to give up the various freedoms that they enjoy as bachelors. Playing organized sports, poker nights, casual sex, vacations, and ultimate decision making power are difficult to part with for some. A fear of losing autonomy and freedom to do the things they love hold many men back from marrying. We are also flooded on a daily basis with anti-marriage messages in the media. Movies and television often depict the hen-pecked, overworked, or “pussy-whipped” husband who is forced to miss out on fun times while forlornly watching his single friends live it up. The stereotypically depicted husband also is sex-starved and forced to watch his once “hot” wife lose her looks. These messages are powerful and commonplace and offer a grim view of marriage. At the end of the day, if your boyfriend is reluctant to pop the question or shies away from discussions about marriage, he simply may not be ready. If he says he does not want to marry, there is little to be gained by pressuring him or trying to change his mind. Either accept the relationship as it is, or move on. Ultimatums may work in the short-term, but ultimately can lead to resentment.

Bringing Chivalry Back From the Dead BY ANGELA VINCENT “Chivalry” refers to a code of conduct in which knights pledged to respect and protect the weak, and to be honest, good and generous. Over the years, the term became associated with gentlemanly behaviour such as opening doors, paying on dates, and acting as a woman’s protector. During the feminist movement, chivalrous behaviour fell out of fashion, as many women considered it an insult to be treated as though they required help or special favour. Many feminists believed that acts of chivalry undermined their efforts to be treated as equals. The question is, whether it’s fair to expect today’s men to act chivalrous toward women as a throw-back to another time, when women’s roles have changed so much. Is it fair to hold men to an old-fashioned standard of conduct when most women would be insulted to be expected to live up to the standard “lady” of the past? I know that I wouldn’t be too thrilled by a man who expected me to be subservient.
don’t do them because I feel obligated by a social or moral code, but because I want to. It seems as though, in modern times, men and women treating each other horribly is becoming more and more and acceptable. I was recently out with a friend when a man came and sat at our table. He expressed surprise that two beautiful women were sitting alone and then suggested he was having a hard time deciding who he wanted. He pointed back and forth between us like he was choosing a sandwich at a deli. I asked him to leave. My run-ins of this nature are quite common, while meeting polite, respectful men proves more difficult. My male friends express the same dismay when discussing their interactions with women.
Maybe instead of thinking of chivalry as something men do for women, we should ALL mind our manners...men and women alike. Whether married, dating, or trying to find a date, put in some effort, clean yourself up, be polite, think of the other’s needs before your Personally, I think that good manners and own, be thoughtful, be sweet, be respectful. respectful behaviour never go out of fashion. I think the world could benefit from everyone This isn’t a gendered premise. Both men and taking the time to be more “chivalrous”. women should treat each other with respect. When a man gives me his coat, holds a door for me, dresses up specifically for me, gets the car so I don’t get rained on, or lets me order first at dinner, I don’t see myself being viewed as helpless or weak. Rather, I see it as being treated with reverence and respect. The same goes when I do nice things for a man. I 89

Alright ladies, the sad truth is that our bodies require more time and expertise in order to reach orgasm than a man’s. Because of this, we’re famous for “faking it” or not climaxing at all. Booooo! Every woman’s body is different and sometimes a little toying around with different positions can enhance our experience and help achieve orgasm more reliably and efficiently. Yay!! Here are some ideas to try tonight. 1. Missionary: Tried, tested and true. The good, old-fashioned missionary position ranks number one on many women’s lists of favourite positions. Personally, I love the feeling of being beneath my partner’s weight. You lay on your back and wrap your legs around your partner while he lays on top of you. Make sure that he enters you at an angle to increase the stimulation to your clitoris!
then put your ankles over his shoulders. He can lift you slightly to adjust the angle. Don’t be afraid to use pillows to prop yourself up to allow the desired angle to be reached comfortably. This position gives your partner more control, so be sure to let him know whether you’re comfortable. 6. Standing: Stand and face each other. Lift one leg and wrap it around his waist (the higher, the better...but if you’re not a professional acrobat, its ok). Make sure he’s supporting you as you raise your leg so you don’t fall over (or stand against a wall for support). You have the opportunity to make some pretty fantastic eye contact when in this position.
2. Woman on top: While your partner lays on his back, straddle him while facing him. You can rest your knees beside him and rock back and forth or lift your knees and perform more of a bouncing motion. Have him put his hands on your hips and move you up and down. This position allows him a stellar view of your upper body and face and access to your breasts and clitoris for stimulation. 7. The Bridge: Lay down as though you’re doing the “bridge” yoga pose. Raise your 3. Reverse cowgirl: This is like the last position, pelvis and use your shoulders to support your except you’ll face his feet instead of his face. weight instead of your hands. Make lots of eye contact or even rest (if you’re on the edge of the bed) and enters your heads on each other’s shoulders. you from behind. This position gives both partners control over the depth of penetration 9. Wheelbarrow: This looks exactly the way and the intensity. You have access to your that it sounds. You will have your hands on the clitoris in this position to provide yourself with ground as he lifts you up by your waist. Once additional stimulation. he lifts you and enters you, tighten your thighs around his waist in order to support yourself. 5. 10. The spoon: This is a nice, comfortable position. You lay on your side with your partner laying on his side behind you. Because your legs are together, it creates a very tight fit. This allows for major stimulation for you and your partner. You also have free access to your clitoris for an additional kick. This position is good for women who prefer less deep penetration.
12. Deep bend: Stand and bend at the waist as though you’re trying to touch your toes. Try to avoid bending your knees as much as possible (you may need to though to account for a height difference). He will enter you from behind. The deep bend creates a tightening of the muscles inside the vagina allowing for more friction.
13. Man on top: Some people call this the 11. The “X”: I love this one. Lay on your back “cowboy”. Lay on your back while your while your partner lays crossways on his side. partner straddles you. Keep your legs slightly Rest your legs over his middle (or he can hold together to increase tightness. There is lots of them). He can stimulate your clitoris at the clitoral stimulation when in this position and he same time. The reason I like this is because gets a great view. he can change the angle and the sensation by adjusting the position of your legs. Lots of possibilities!

14. The king: Have him sit on the edge of the bed or the edge of a chair. Back onto him. You can either remain standing and have more control over depth, speed, and intensity or sit down and grind yourself against his pelvis allowing for more clitoral stimulation. Either way, you won’t be disappointed.

15. The “M”: Sit facing your partner in the “crab walk” position (bum down, legs bent, supporting your weight with your hands placed behind your back). He will be sitting in the same position. Remain in this position as he enters you. Stimulate your clitoris by grinding it against his pelvis. Control the angle of penetration by adjusting the bend of your elbows to raise or lower your body.

Pan Con Tomate Pan con Tomate (Bread with Tomato) is sometimes called Pan a la Catalana in other parts of Spain. It is one of the simplest, the most well-loved, the most widely eaten and the most famous dishes from Catalu単a. In Catalan, it is called pa amb tomaquet and in Spanish, pan con tomate. Tomato Bread is simply toasted bread rubbed with fresh garlic and ripe tomato, then drizzled with olive oil and a bit of salt. It can be eaten by itself, but is often topped with cheese, ham or sausage. First, if using a baguette, cut pieces about 4-5 inches long. Then, slice the pieces horizontally, as you would when making a sub sandwich. Toast bread, then rub fresh garlic, and ripe tomato, then drizzle your favorite liquid gold olive oil. It can be eaten by itself, but is often topped with cheese, serrano ham or chorizo. 94

Smoothies and milkshakes are both yummy treats that are relatively easy to make with the help of a blender or food processor. Usually smoothies are considered the healthier option, but if you aren’t careful the calories in smoothies can rival that of a milkshake. Smoothies are a great on the go meal replacement or snack. They are generally made with a mix of fruit, milk or juice, and veggies. By adding heavy ingredients typically found in milkshakes (like chocolate, milk, and artificial sweeteners) to your smoothies, you can risk doing more bad than good. Stick to mixing healthy and organic fruits and vegetables with light juices like orange juice or even healthy milk substitutes like soymilk or almond milk. There are a ton of other additions you can toss in your smoothies to give them an extra healthy boost. For example, chia seeds are a power-food that contain huge amounts of antioxidants, nutrients, protein and more. All you need is a small amount blended nicely into your drink to reap their benefits. Milkshakes on the other hand consist of a blend of ice cream and milk, making them a snack packed with sugar and calories. The best way to still enjoy these from time to time without hindering your diet is by switching to low-fat soy or almond milk, and a healthier ice cream substitute. Soy ice cream or sorbet can make for a swap that still gives you the same consistency and taste needed for milkshakes. Truly, the differences between smoothies and milkshakes are night and day. Milkshakes can be a yummy indulgence from time to time, but smoothies are really where the health benefits lie. No matter how you blend it, milkshakes are a dessert, not a meal replacement. Make the conscious decision to try out healthy smoothie recipes and leave the milkshakes for a once in a while treat!

I HEREBY NAME THIS FOOD IN THE NAME OF HEALTH & WELLNESS BY TAMMY MALLEY There has been a boom in the sales of “healthy” foods in Canada, but what constitutes healthy is subjective. Health Canada has prescribed very, very specific claims that are allowed on foods and the criteria limits many foods from being allowed to make health claims. I’ve seen a number of new foods come onto the market and make their way into my Whole Foods, Superstore organic section or Organic Planet and they prey on consumers who want to believe that they’re reducing their risk of cancer by cupcake that has a little bit of flaxseed in it. While a cupcake with flaxseed is likely healthier than a regular cupcake that has no nutritional value, it’s not going to be a magical cure to anything other than hunger—with slightly less guilt. Claims can be divided into 1) Disease Risk Reduction, 2) Function, 3) Nutrient Function and 4) Probiotic. For the purposes of this discussion, I’ll be focusing on the first type of claim. Disease Risk Reduction claims can be further divided into claims relating to 1) Sodium and Potassium, 2) Calcium and Vitamin D, 3) Saturated Fats and Trans Fats, 4) Cancer Risk and 5) Dental Caries. Since cancer permeates the life of almost every Canadian, let’s discuss this particular claim. In B.01.603 of the Food and Drug Regulations, it states that this claim can only be written as: “A healthy diet rich in a variety of vegetables 102
and fruit may help reduce the risk of some types of cancer.” How ambiguous! Sounds like this claim could be applicable to lots of products, right? It goes on to state that the statement CANNOT be made on: “Potatoes, yams, cassava, plantain, corn, mushrooms, mature legumes and their juices, vegetable of fruits used as condiments [side note—ketchup doesn’t count!], garnishes of flavourings... jams or jam-type spreads, marmalades, preserves and jellies, olives or powdered vegetables or fruit and contains 0.5% or less alcohol.” That was a mouthful. This claim only applies to fruit and vegetables not listed above, in their fresh, frozen, canned or dried state. So, if you ever pick up a food that claims to be a cancer fighter, helps cure Type II diabetes or eliminates cancer, not only should you be skeptical of the food, but you should be skeptical of the company. Generally, a food company who makes wild, illegal health claims will also ignore other food regulations and laws; while some food regulations are arbitrary, many of them are there for safety, so consumers should be aware of food companies that disregard policies.
