My grandmother was fond of the Zen proverb, “you cannot give from an empty cup.” Beautiful words that she rarely heeded as she tended her psychology practice, teaching and speaking engagements. How full is your cup? While we busy women take great care to protect our loved ones, we’re not always so kind to ourselves. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 14% of US women are in fair or poor health. We encourage you to use the checklists within to assess your Mental, Physical and Spiritual Health so that you can stay on track – or get on board – taking the best care of YOU. We’ll be “filling ears” on May 14 as we partner with the RiverDogs to break the World Record for Largest Game of Telephone. Check out page 22 for more details and join us as we show off our word of mouth prowess! Thank you for your readership, and if we can ever be of help, please let us know.

betty buzz: SKIN CANCER AWARENESS The ABCDEs of Melanoma You should check your skin regularly for spots on your body – moles, freckles, age spots, etc. If you notice changes, check your ABCDE’s for signs of trouble. Always see a dermatologist when you have any changes, questions or concerns! A – Asymmetry One half of the mole is unlike the other half. They look like two different moles merged together.

B – Border The border of the mole is either irregular in shape and is scalloped or poorly defined.

C – Color Varies, ranging in shades of: tan, brown and black; sometimes even white, red or blue.

D – Diameter Melanomas are usually > 6mm, but when they’re first diagnosed they can be smaller.

E – Evolving Over time, the mole or skin lesion changes in size, shape or color.

Self Examination Checklist Keep notes on each area or create your own mole map. If you have a hereditary risk or sun damage, be sure to see a doctor annually for a check up. • Entire front & back of torso; left & right sides • Torso under your arms • Forearms, arms front & back; under arm area • Palms & tops of hands • Legs front & back; between legs; buttocks • Soles & tops of feet; between toes • Back of neck; along hairline • Scalp Source: American Academy of Dermatology, www.aad.org

betty buzz: I WILL REFLECT “I Will Ref lect” is a national melanoma skin care initiative that The Spa at Charleston Place and MUSC have partnered on to raise awareness, educate and help prevent melanoma. Meet the ambassadors who are sharing their stories to help educate and inform the Lowcountry about melanoma. Julie Parrish Sister of June Wallace; Director of Finance & Administration at MUSC June Wallace’s fair skin and red hair required that she protect herself when going out in the sun, so she stayed in the shade and wore her sunscreen. As a nurse at Roper and an active, single mother of a 5-year-old son, the eraser-size spot on her inner leg bothered her. The spot had no sun exposure and her dermatologist wasn’t concerned, but because it irritated her, she insisted on removing it, and, routinely, had it sent for testing. Two weeks later, the 31 year old discovered that she had Stage 3 Melanoma. After aggressive surgery, June was cancer-free, but six years later, just before her 38th birthday in December 2003, she felt a lump in the same general area. A biopsy revealed that the cancer had returned and had spread to her liver, lungs, spleen, spine and throat. In May 2004, June lost her courageous battle. June’s sister, Julie Parrish dutifully educates friends and strangers alike about skin cancer prevention and education. The mission is a family matter, to honor June and because of the hereditary component of the disease. Early detection in June’s mother and father led to successful treatment of melanoma. Julie, who’s chances of developing skin cancer increased by 50% when her sister was diagnosed, sees her dermatologist annually and had digital mole mapping done to account for every spot and freckle from head to toe. “You have to take control of your own health and your own destiny,” says Julie, “it is so important to be conscious and proactive.” Dana C. Mitchell Real Estate Management; Improv Comedian; Survivor A routine doctors appointment in December 2005 was the perfect opportunity to ask the doctor about the bump that had appeared on 26-year-old Dana Mitchell’s hip. The doctor removed and tested it, and everything was fine, so in February, when another bump appeared on his right knee, he wasn’t worried. At a follow up appointment in March, he showed the doctor the bump but was assured that it was probably the same thing and was counseled to see a dermatologist if it changed in appearance. “I had sold myself on the thought that ‘it was fine,’” explains Dana, “and in doing so, had lost a bit of focus on terms of watching it.” By early-June, in the late evening, the spot would start to hurt, and occasionally it would bleed if lightly scratched, but never once did Dana consider that it might be dangerous. While on vacation in California in July, a friend asked about it and recommended he get it taken off soon. So, when he returned home, he made an appointment to see a dermatologist for purely cosmetic reasons. The removal took 5 minutes, while the results changed his life: it was melanoma, it was deep and it was serious. Together with a very supportive family, Dana made a plan of action. The following morning he had a wide biopsy and a lymph node dissection. “Three days later, with my entire extended family gathered in Greenville and going crazy with worry, we got the call letting us know that it was really bad,” Dana explains. The cancer was found in 3 of 4 lymph nodes and he was diagnosed at Stage 3b. “Amid everyone freaking out – I was scared, but I was really calm,” explains Dana. “It sounds cliché and is hard to explain but I felt a sense of comfort and peace and felt so lucky to be surrounded by people who loved me. I wasn’t afraid.” Dana was given a 50/50 chance of survival, and after the removal of the remaining lymph nodes on his right side, began a 12-month course of the relatively new Interferon Alpha treatment, an immunotherapy drug that increased his odds by 5 – 10%. Almost 4 years later, Dana is happily living cancer-free. He gets PET scans twice a year and annual check ups with a dermatologist to compare his skin to a digital mole map he had done. Dana gives a lot of credit to support, access to health care, and faith and optimism in carrying him through this experience. He implores others to pay attention to any new spots on your skin or spots that have changed in appearance and to not hesitate in making an appointment with a dermatologist. “Sometimes it takes just 30 minutes of your life to save it.”

I WILL REFLECT continued... Angi Klick Senior Store Manager TrySports Charlotte and Mt Pleasant Angi’s love for sports is more than a passion, it’s a job. Working with new athletes to “TrySports”, she instructs them on the right footwear, technique and on wearing proper sunscreen. She had first hand knowledge of how important it was to be diligent about taking care of her skin, as her mother, father and sister all had had cancerous cells removed from their faces. Her job and hobby keep her outdoors often, and in the back of her mind, she knew that skin cancer might be an issue for her. This knowledge led her to take note of a small, brown spot on her left cheek that appeared in 2009. The spot turned out to be basal cell carcinoma and her doctor removed it. “I did another triathlon soon thereafter, and it came back,” says Angi. “I knew that I should be checking regularly, but until I saw that spot, I didn’t understand how important it was.” Now, Angi regularly visits her doctor and is very conscious of applying sunscreen. In fact, one recent day when she forgot to apply her broad spectrum sunscreen before an 8-mile run over the Connector, she was so mindful about the omission, that she could smell the sunscreen on every runner that she passed. Angi has worked hard to find a sunscreen that works for her sensitive skin and stands up to the heat, water and sweat that comes with being an active athlete. But she knows that prevention is key: “Don’t wait until you have a problem, take care of yourself before you have an issue.”

betty buzz: HEALTH CHECKup

Busy women often forget to take time for themselves, but scheduling regular checkups with your doctors can add years to your life. Get your calendar out and make these appointments today! Vision

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, most people should receive a complete eye exam every two years. People who wear glasses, have diabetes or are over the age of 55 should get checked more frequently.

Dental

The American Dental Association recommends that adults and children have a dental check up and cleaning every six months. Patients with gum disease should visit the dentist every 3 months.

Breast Exams Hearing

The risk for hearing loss dramatically increases after age 50. If you are worried about your hearing, talk to your doctor or nurse and they can schedule a hearing test.

Heart

Cholesterol tests assess the risk for coronary heart and/or artery disease. Women should begin getting a cholesterol check up every 5 years at the age of 45. Women between the ages of 20 and 45 who have other risk factors for heart disease should also get their cholesterol tested. These factors include tobacco use, diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of heart disease. To find out what the numbers mean, and learn how to lower them, check out the Cholesterol Center at www.webmd.com.

Pap Test

A Pap test consists of a pelvic examination and a check for cervical cancer. All women over the age of 18 and/or who have been or are sexually active should have a pap test done every year. But, new guidelines issued by the American Cancer Society suggest that women over the age of 30 who have had three normal Pap tests in a row, may get screened every 2 – 3 years, unless they have other risk factors.

Dermatologist

Women should perform breast self-exams monthly beginning at age 20. After age 40, women should have mammograms done annually. These exams check for any cancerous lumps. Early detection improves the chances of diagnosing and treating cancer successfully. Women with a family history may need to have exams done at an earlier age and more frequently. For more information on breast cancer and how to perform self-exams, visit www.breastcancer.org.

Colonoscopy

This procedure allows the doctor to look inside your large intestine in order to detect any abnormal growths, ulcers or cancers. A colonoscopy should be performed at the age of 50 and should be done every 5 – 10 years thereafter. According to the Center for Disease Control, colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the US, but with regular screening tests, one-third of those deaths could be avoided. For more information, visit www.cdc.gov/screenforlife.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends annual screenings for skin cancer. Pay attention to any changes in size, shape, color or texture of a mole or sore, you need to visit a dermatologist immediately to have it checked. Can’t remember to make a regular appointment? Don’t rely on your homeowner’s insurance to cover your business. Most policies limit loss of business property to $2,500 and don’t cover losses away from the home. Make sure you obtain business insurance separate from your homeowner’s policy or, if your insurance company offers it, an endorsement to your existing policies. This type of extension, where available, can be as low as an additional $200 or so annually.

betty buzz: Fruit & Veggie Garden Calendar

Jim Martin, Charleston Parks Conservancy’s Executive Director and a lifelong gardener who has worked for over 20-years in public horticulture, is known as the “garden guru” by other landscape and garden professionals. He’s shared his expertise on some key calendar items to note to help keep every busy woman’s thumb green. April • Plant tomatoes now that the last spring frost date is past. • Plant cantaloupe, cucumber, squash and watermelons. Here in the south, it works best to plant them on mounds for optimum drainage. • Plant basil and other herbs that will enjoy the approaching warm weather. They need 5 - 6 hours of direct sunlight to prosper. • Mix full sun annuals such as zinnias and marigolds for a pop of color in the vegetable garden. • A fresh 2-inch straw mulching under strawberries keeps them clean and ready to pick when ripe and juicy. May • Plant peppers now, because they love the heat. There are many to choose from ranging in size of fruit, and the heat they provide when used in the kitchen. • Put a layer of newspapers between rows and plants and finish it off with a 2-inch layer of straw or leaves. It will help keep weeds out, moisture in and cools the roots during hot summer days. • Start a compost pile with the garden weeds, kitchen waste and left over cool season vegetables that have passed their prime. • Add mushroom compost to all vegetable areas before planting more warm season plants such as sweet corn and okra. June • Keep picking herbs to use for cooking and floral arrangements, thus forcing new growth and keeping the plants in an active growth cycle. • Rabbit eye blueberries and fig are starting to ripen. Protect the fruit from birds with fine netting made specifically for keeping them out. • Walk the garden every evening and look for potential pest and disease problems. Catch them in the early stages and minimize the damage. • Keep the vegetable garden watered during dry periods to ensure tomatoes ripen properly without the splitting problems that occur with uneven watering.

Clean Out • If it doesn’t fit or you haven’t worn it in a year, put it in the consignment, donation or recycling basket. • Have something nostalgic? Store it with other memorabilia. • Place items that need mending or altering or cleaning in separate baskets. • Properly store out of season clothing and shoes. Organize • Hang like-items together in sections: shirts, dresses, slacks, jackets, etc. • Coordinate each section by color to make it easy to create ensembles. • Invest in clear shoe boxes (try the Family Dollar), and recycle the boxes they came in. Stack shoes neatly so that you can see and access each pair. • Hang decorative hooks to hold belts, necklaces, scarves and other items. • Use baskets or bins to hold purses, socks, or other items that don’t have a “home”. Personalize The last step to organizing any closet is making it your own! Don’t neglect the space just because it is behind closed doors. You start and end your day there, so decorate it to your tastes. A nice rug, fun light fixture, pictures on the wall and a coat of paint can transform your closet into your “me” space.

Bring out the wave because curls are big this Spring. Hair goddess Joanna Katz at Katz Hair Studio shares her recipe for getting the look! 1) Mix 2-drops of essential, lavender oil and 16-oz of water in a spray bottle. 2) Spray on your hair while scrunching, then set in some plastic, jaw clips and let dry naturally. 3) Finger comb your locks and scrunch in some hair spray for a light hold. This works best the day after you’ve shampooed. Joanna also recommends taking your high lights down a bit to a more golden tone, giving those curls depth and dimension while enhancing your eyes and skin tone.

framing

Artizom Frame Gallery

Hanging a Picture Perfect Wall 1. Make measurements of your wall, noting details like switches, receptacle covers and molding. 2. Transfer your wall’s dimensions to the floor using strips of masking tape. 3. Arrange your framed pieces on the floor, making sure not to overlap any taped areas. Move, swap or adjust your pieces without making multiple nail holes in your wall. 4. Move the art to the wall. Starting at the top of the wall, transfer measurements for each frame’s hanger from the tapelines on the floor. 5. Use a level to ensure you have hung each frame straight.

Artizom is a custom picture frame gallery conveniently located in the heart of downtown Charleston at 334 East Bay Street. Locally owned and operated for nearly 10 years, the husband and wife team are both native Charlestonians who graduated from the fine art department at the College of Charleston. They offer museum quality, conservation framing for fine art, photographs, prints, posters, mirrors, textiles and collectibles as well as replace broken picture frame glass.

Decorating Sense Keep these tips in mind the next time you are updating a room: • Set a budget and stick to it! • Make a list of the functions that a room must have and let the form follow. • Use a bulletin board to pin up your paint choices, wallpaper samples, fabric selections and magazine clippings to help inspire you and give direction. • Use a piece of graph paper to make a scale size room and cut paper to represent your furniture so you can play with the arrangement. • Take inventory of the items you have in your home before buying something new. Open your mind – that china cabinet in the dining room could make a great piece in the study! • Save money on drapery by selecting a fabulous, pricier fabric for the front and putting an interlining between that fabric and the lining.

“My favorite words of wisdom to remember everyday are the Four Toltec Wisdoms to live by according to author Don Miguel Ruiz and outlined in his book “The Four Agreements®”: 1. Use your words impeccably 2. Do not take things personally 3. Do not make assumptions 4. Always do your best” - ELLEN DRESSLER MORYL, Director of the Office of Cultural Affairs, City of Charleston

April • If it’s flowered, prune it. Forsythia, quince, flowering almond and azaleas can be cut back, but don’t delay. Azaleas start to form flowers in late June for next year’s floral display and need time to grow some before then. • Easter lilies and Christmas amaryllis make fine additions to the garden when the flowers fade. They will flower in the ground at least 3 - 4 weeks later, and will be a welcome arrival even if they miss the holidays! • Fertilize roses with a slow release fertilizer or choose an organic formulation that will provide nutrients throughout the growing season. • Move your shade-loving tropicals such as bromeliads and orchids outdoors; they’ll enjoy the warm, humid spring days. May • With the weather warming up, apply 3 inches of mulch around shrubs, trees and mixed color plantings to help keep weeds from germinating, cool the soil and help conserve moisture. • Rake and discard all old flower blooms of camellias and any old leaves that dropped as new ones grow on the plant. These carry diseases that can re-infect the plants down the road. • Add 2 - 4 inches of mushroom compost to sun-loving tropicals such as elephant ears, cannas and pineapple lilies. • Cut out the yellowing foliage of spring flowering bulbs. They no longer are making energy for next year’s floral display. June • Look closely for potential pest problems. Handpick pests - a natural, healthy way to take care of pest problems. • Fertilize citrus with a slow release or ask your favorite nursery what special fertilizer they have specifically for fruit trees. • Experiment with drought tolerant succulents. This is the month where there will be lots of treasures to pick and choose from in the big box stores. Have fun and try some new container combinations. • The big rose bloom is finished and it’s time to deadhead China, Tea and Noisette roses. Add 2 - 4 inches of compost as they begin to grow new foliage before the next bloom cycle. • It isn’t too late to plant containerized plants in the garden. The secret is keeping them watered so they can get established during our hot summer days ahead.

“Be sure you have time for your pet! Pampering is often for people, and takes a different form for pets. Other than a high-quality diet, basic training for safety and companionship and regular grooming, affection & engaging in play/exercise is the best pampering for any pet. You don’t need to spend a lot of money, either – paper bags can quickly become prized possessions before they hit the recycling bin! Pets don’t care about materialistic possessions as we might, but they do care about receiving your attention.” -JEANINE STRATTON, Behavioral Analyst

betty buzz: Favorite Travel Tips Buy airline tickets on Wednesday nights as close to midnight as possible when the airlines are releasing their held tickets and trying to fill flights. Never purchase on a weekend! Use an organizational application like Evernote to store your tickets, reservations, directions to and from the hotel, rental car receipts and other needed items you’ve booked online so that you can access them on the fly from your PDA. Make dinner reservations through your hotel concierge whenever possible. Restaurants often give the best tables and the best service to these guests to maintain a good rapport with the hotel. When on the road with the family, give your child a map. Circle your starting point and where you will end up. Let your child play “navigator and tell you what city or town you will pass next. Find fun facts or makeup stories about each place you pass. Travel frequently? Keep a bag packed with travel size toiletries. Hair products (ask for them at your salon); Hand wipes; Toothbrush, tooth paste and dental floss; Hair ties and a brush; etc.

WEDDING EVENT VENUES CONTINUED... Drayton Hall A timeless setting on the Ashley River for unforgettable weddings.

Wedding To Dos to Delegate There’s so much to be done, but you don’t have to do it all! Delegate some of these responsibilities: ❍ Table and chair set up for the reception. A good rental company will work hand in hand with you to make sure you have all that you need. Planning on your own or using several different sources can lead to miscommunication, so make sure you are asking the right questions. ✓ How and when do I pay? ✓ How early should I make my reservation? ✓ Is there a fee for changes to my order? ✓ Can I pick up and return my order? ✓ When do you deliver/pick up? ✓ Is there a charge for delivery? ✓ Do I need to be there at time of delivery? ✓ Are there any special requirements for delivery? (size of entrance; ramps; etc.) ✓ Will you set up and take down all rentals? ✓ Do I have to wash any of the items? ✓ What is your policy regarding loss or damage? ✓ Looking over my order, is there anything that I need to complete my set up? (floor with the tent; fabric for furniture; candles for votives; etc.) ✓ Do you need a power source for any of the items on my list, and who provides extension cords, power strips, etc.? ✓ How do you anchor your tents? (important to know for venue) ✓ What are your general rental terms and conditions?
