Get your Pride on! Okay, we’re just going to say it: this might be the most exciting Capital Pride in a very long time. After all the city’s promoters, DJs and community organizers sent us their details and our hungry one-man army (thanks, Jeremy Willard!) scoured the web for every party he could find, we compiled an extensive guide to getting the maximum gay out of Capital Pride 2013. From cabaret, to film, to gender-bending dance parties, to RuPaul’s Drag Race royalty, Xtra’s Ultimate Pride Guide helps locals and visitors navigate the festivities with precision. Use the map, circle your faves — but more importantly, get out there and have a gay ol’ time.

Flagraising tour

While the Bank Street BIA has assured that new Pride flags will dot the Village for this year’s festival, several city service providers will show solidarity by raising the rainbow flag. The day begins at 6am at Ottawa police headquarters for a pancake breakfast fundraiser, with all proceeds going to trans organization Gender Mosaic. After breakfast, a series of flag-raisings will be held at the headquarters of OC Transpo, By-Law Services, Ottawa Paramedic Service and Ottawa Fire Services, wrapping up with the official flag-raising at Ottawa City Hall at 4pm. Community members are invited to tag along on an OC Transpo bus that will shuttle attendees between locations behind a pink limousine carrying this year’s Capital Pride marshals. — Bradley Turcotte Mon, Aug 19, 6am. RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 4 star Detox is the special guest performer, and Tapette founder/DJ Phil Villeneuve (also Xtra Toronto’s arts editor) says that even if you’re not fluent in the most romantic language, the night translates to a good time for any anglophone. “If you don’t think you like or know French pop or house, that’s even more reason to come out. There is so much great French dance music right now, it’s impossible not to bouge de là!” he says. — Bradley Turcotte Fri, Aug 23, 10pm. Location and cover TBA. Check houseofsas.ca for more info.

Dyke March

Ben Welland

Ottawa’s dykes celebrate a decade of demonstrations this year. Dyke March committee member Sarah Manns invites allies to support Capital Pride’s ferocious feminists as they “celebrate the past, present and future of our community.” After all, this year’s theme is The Time of Your Life. The rally kicks off at the Human Rights Monument and will feature several surprise speakers. Marchers then travel down Lisgar Street and turn onto Bank Street and along Gilmore Street before arriving in Minto Park. The park will play host to a picnic, featuring a kids’ area and an open-mic stage for dykes and their supporters. — Bradley Turcotte Sat, Aug 24, 12:30pm.

Pride parades have historically been rooted in protest, when marginalized gay and lesbian people forced the masses to take notice that we are here, queer and not going anywhere — except, possibly, to a fabulous party. While Canadian queer people have seen massive progress since the first gay march, Capital Pride board member and parade coordinator Tova Larsen says the protest element of Ottawa’s parade — which is the largest parade the city sees all year — is still relevant. This year’s convoy begins at the intersection of Bank and Gladstone streets before travelling through the Village. Participants then turn onto Laurier Avenue and head to the festival at city hall. The Mister Leather Ottawa contingent won Best Float in 2012, but this year, entrants compete for four awards. Be sure to grab a ballot for People’s Choice and deposit your selection in the box on the festival grounds, conveniently located near the bar, by 5pm. — Bradley Turcotte Sun, Aug 25, 1pm.
