CAPITAL P Navigating Ottawa’s end-of-summer festival JEREMY WILLARD
There are flashier cities. Bigger ones. More diverse ones. Warmer ones. But few can claim to have played as big a role in the fight for queer rights in Canada as Ottawa has. 6
It was in Ottawa in 1967 that, as minister of justice, Pierre Trudeau introduced the controversial Criminal Law Amendment Act, 1968–69, an omnibus bill calling for an overhaul of the Criminal Code of Canada, including the decriminalization of “homosexual acts” performed in private between consenting adults. He famously told reporters “there’s no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation, and I think that what’s done in private between adults doesn’t concern the Criminal Code.” It was in Ottawa that the Charter of Rights and Freedoms was signed, the basis for countless legal battles surrounding queer rights. It was in Ottawa that same-sex marriage was legalized nationwide. It was in Ottawa that Svend Robinson became the first member of Parliament to come out as gay. It was in Ottawa that Prime Minister Stephen Harper honoured his campaign promise to have a
vote in the House reopening the debate about same-sex marriage — and lost that vote. There’s something special about celebrating Pride in a place where so many of our rights were won. This is your guide to all the events Pride offers, from raucous booze fests to religious services to kid-friendly barbecues in the park.
The Queer Mafia
Party-hungry night-dwellers find their bliss at two latenight club events put on by the ominously named Queer Mafia production company. OffBeat: Big Gay Dance Party (see page 10) features DJs Emmett, Jas Nasty and Debonair spinning funk, R&B, ska and Motown. Partial proceeds go to the Ottawa Wolves rugby team. Later during Pride Week is Oh My Jam: Pridin Dirty (see page 28), where hip-hop, R&B and reggae fanatics sway and grind to beats by DJs J-ill,

Sammy Royale, Lissa Monet and D-Luxx Brown. Proceeds from the Queer Mafia raffles go to POWER, the sex-workerrights advocacy group. Both parties feature photo booths and “midnight shenanigans.”
The Ottawa Senior Pride Network
The Ottawa Senior Pride Network (OSPN), the organization that provides services and organizes recurring events for queer folks 50 and older, is once again making Pride a priority. At the Pride BBQ Lunch (see page 14),

organized in partnership with the Good Companions Centre, OSPN members and non-members indulge in good food and better company while enjoying a performance by singer/songwriter Jamie Anderson, who has just published a memoir about living life on the road. Then there’s the annual OSPN Pride Party (see page 18), where older folks and their friends enjoy finger food, a cash bar and “vintage dance music.” Finally, as a pleasant, low-key ending to Pride, the day after the parade, folks can join in with Seniors’ Bowling (see page 30).
Venus Envy
Surely any sexually adventurous queer person is familiar with Venus Envy, the education-oriented sex shop, and their many regular workshops, art shows and book-club meetings. Over the course of Pride, Venus Envy hosts various workshops, from BDSM 201: Edge Play and Power Relationships (see page 10) to Lessons in NonMonogamy: What Have We Figured Out So Far? (see page 12) to Sex Toys for Queers (see page 14). For bookish folks, there is also the annual Reading Out Loud (see page 18), where “folks who make stuff happen in Ottawa” read
