The Pride Declaration I will explore the entire Queendom Make sure you celebrate all over town! The West End and East Van are hosting parties, so leave a glitter trail and go back and forth, back and forth . . . (How did this turn dirty so quickly? #pride)
I will make a friend There are so many characters in Vancouver; meet someone who will blow your mind (or something else!).
I will be proud Participate in the events, but don’t forget that Pride is about celebrating yourself. Take a minute to enjoy the view and the people who mean the most. —Raziel

Blitz & Shitz’s
guide to Pride THURS, JULY 25 –SUN, JULY 28
Queer Arts Festival I’m heading to the Roundhouse Community Centre for the one-man show Bi, Hung, Fit . . . and Married because the title sounds like the guy who bought my virginity! I’m also signing up to express my transgressive voice with author Amber Dawn’s five-hour writers’ workshop Tough Language & Tender Wisdoms. Theatre and confessional verse? Not quite the vodka and promiscuity that usually kick off my Pride, but this season is just getting started, bitch.
THURS, AUG 1
David Ellingsen
Undies & cuties An underwear party at The PumpJack with DJ Taffi Louis sounds like the perfect way to strip down and start Pride right: free! (Not to mention obtain invaluable information, like which daddies wear boxers and which ones wear briefs.)
FRI, AUG 2
Findin’ me a pilot Obviously, I’ll be at the Gay Pilots Pride Social (gold-digging pickaxe in tow) because the men in attendance will be generally richer, sexier and smarter than everyone else, and I am marrying one of them. Well, I’m at least fucking one! Okay, okay. I’m blowing a pilot in the bathroom at Lickerish. Still exciting! If pilots aren’t your thing, the Davie Street Pride Party always attracts a huge crowd. It’s all-ages from Bute to Broughton starting at 4pm, but in the evening there’s a licensed area from Bute to Burrard, where the 19-plus crowd gets caged in like exotic animals with glitter pelt, and our Village becomes a zoo!
SAT, AUG 3 Party tradition I can’t miss Rapture: Heatwave, TFD’s hugely successful Pride pool party, which always hosts the most beautiful boys. RuPaul’s Drag Race
Raziel is Xtra’s social columnist. Check out his Blitz & Shitz blog on dailyxtra.com and his column in every issue of Xtra.

Season 5 winner Jinkx Monsoon is performing along with Morgan McMichaels. And, of course, I’ll be at Queer Bash’s return to The Cobalt with a ménage à trois dress-up messy-itup: Fashion House vs Frat House vs Bath House!
SUN, AUG 4 24 hours of G-A-Y I will be dancing under the influence long before the underground all-nighter DUI: G-A-Y, which is being held at a “secret location.” I’m having me a 24-hour Pride bang (oh, baby), which starts with the Pride parade and ends in a hot, smoky, dance den from which I vow to emerge thoroughly proud!
MON, AUG 5 Pride recovery If I don’t have time to catch one of the two CruiseyT gay cruises happening during Pride Week, I am going to end this season aboard the MV Britannia, getting restored by the fresh air, the view and the queens! This way if I’m puking my guts out from partying all week, I can just blame it on the sea.

When the Sun Comes Out
Queer Arts Festival The theme for this year’s celebration of queer art is TransgressionNow, featuring 14 visual artists and a variety of performances, including the premiere of Canadian lesbian opera When the Sun Comes Out.
19_UPG-V_2013_QueerArts.indd 12
Directed by James Fagan Tait and workshopped at last year’s festival, the opera follows three people trying to realize themselves in Fundamentalia, a constrictive cultural landscape that doesn’t allow them that freedom.

Genderfest If feedback from last year’s inaugural Genderfest is any indication, the events struck a welcome tone of inclusion and ease. “If you feel like you don’t belong anywhere else at Pride, you probably belong at Genderfest,” says lead organizer Pussy Liquor. minus the all-genders bathhouse night. In its place, Liquor and colleagues are organizing a one-day conference, which focuses on Genderfest’s three main values: celebrating gender diversity, anti-oppression and contributing to queer communities. “I started doing this project in response to
organizations like Prance! and The Odd Ball shutting down,” Liquor says. “These things happen very organically.” —Natasha Barsotti Genderfest Thurs, July 25– Sun, Aug 4 genderfest.ca

Dyke decade
Jess MunITz
The Vancouver Dyke March and Festival is graduating to double digits this year. “It’s our 10th annual, but it’s our first ever where we’re going to have someone leading the spirit of the Dyke March,” president Michelle Fortin says. In addition to the inaugural marshal, look for a brand new flag — its rainbow stripes backing the familiar silhouette of the celebratory dyke with arms raised — to make its debut at the head of the Commercial Drive march.

Queer Film Festival Dust off your Pride glitter and get ready for the silver anniversary of Vancouver’s Queer Film Festival. This year’s 11-day movie/party/ community-building orgy of expression and exploration will feature the drama of song-and-dance Bollywood routines, in the festival’s first Spotlight on India. A PechaKucha (Japanese for “chatter”) evening — entitled Who Are We, Cinema? — will mark another festival first, as directors make rapid-fire presentations with the help of 20 slides that appear for 20 seconds. The festival will also take a look back at the 1920s and ’30s through the lens of Silent Night, during which local musicians perform live. —Natasha Barsotti
