NEIGHBOURHOOD
A village in t New Edinburgh offers a small-town experience minutes from downtown Ottawa is going through a period of intense growth. As the city’s condo boom continues, neighbourhoods and landscapes are quickly changing. Modern new residences are shooting up all over the city, from Westboro to Lebreton Flats to Lansdowne. With all the hustle and bustle as the city charges forward into the future, it may be surprising to learn that just a few minutes from downtown, there’s a neighbourhood with a more relaxed vibe. Planned and built in the 1830s by Thomas McKay, who was appointed by Colonel John By to perform the masonry work on the Rideau Canal locks, today New Edinburgh is somewhat of a time capsule. The village is home to Rideau Hall and 24 Sussex Drive and is bordered by the communities of Vanier and Rockcliffe. It exudes an Old World charm and a decidedly slower pace that comes as a welcome change from the frenzied energy of downtown.

Jacobsons Gourmet Concepts If you’re throwing a dinner party and need a lot of little touches in a hurry, Jacobsons has got you covered. A fixture on the street since 2006, this bright, quirky little nook is your one-stop shop for all things entertainment, from pastries and petits fours to printed napkins and kitchen gadgets. The shop even carries a small range of jewellery for those soirées that need an extra sparkle. “I really like to think of us as a neighbourhood store,” owner Susan Jacobson says. “We’re the corner store for anything that you might want in terms of specialty food and also interesting gifts and entertaining ideas.” Jacobsons carries a range of products from local suppliers, including True Loaf bread, Harvey and Vern’s Soda, Seed to Sausage meats and Pascal’s Ice Cream. There’s also an impressive range of imported food items that you’d be hardpressed to find anywhere else in Ottawa. But Jacobsons’ real specialty is cheese. “We have about 100 to 125 different cheeses, very much artisanal. Obviously, we do cheeses from Ontario, British Columbia, from Nova Scotia, but we also have [cheeses] from wherever we can find — what we consider to be the best cheeses from around the world,” says Jacobson, who located her business in New Edinburgh for the sense of community. “It’s fun to be part of the neighbourhood.” 141 Beechwood Ave jacobsons.ca

Details Home Apparel Inc If you have a cottage or small apartment space you’re looking to spruce up, Details Home Apparel can help you out. The business, which maintains a small New Edinburgh storefront, specializes in home décor and interior design. They can take on a range of projects, from small spaces to large, and the focus is on rustic, earthy design with a homey vibe. “Over the years, we’ve figured out what works in this neighbourhood and sort of developed our niche,” shop associate Susan Jameson says. “A lot of people were having summer cottages and ski chalets — the cottage-casual décor seems to suit and to fit the neighbourhood.” In addition to making over cottages, Details also takes on smaller-scale projects — like creating custom draperies and window treatments — and larger ones, including full renovations. Each project starts with a home consultation to discuss what a client envisions for their space. Jameson says Details tries to focus on Canadian designers and products wherever they can while keeping price points reasonable. “[For] what we have in the store, we sort of follow the model of ‘If we don’t like it, we don’t put it in the store.’ It’s all stuff we like, stuff that we’re proud to show.” 131 Beechwood Ave, 613-745-8484

If you aren’t sure which treatment to try, office manager Vanessa SindenLafleche recommends the hydrafacial. “It’s kind of like microdermabrasion but without the abrasiveness . . . It’s vacuum-tip as well as hydrating serums, and it’s just relaxing overall.” The treatment can help reduce red and brown spots on the skin, as well as fine lines and wrinkles. Nature’s Buzz The health-food movement has reached every corner of the city, and organic food is now ubiquitous in Ottawa. In New Edinburgh, you can find it at Nature’s Buzz, a healthfood store that specializes in fresh meat and wild-caught fish. Originally located up the street, the store fell victim to a devastating fire in 2011. But Nature’s Buzz has persevered and today business is — well — buzzing. “It’s just a family-run, organic food store,” store manager Eric Passmore says. “We focus mainly on the food rather than on supplements . . . we try to keep it to organic local food as much as possible.” The store carries products like Happy Goat coffee; gluten-free bread and goodies from CeeleeakNak Bakery, located in Vanier; Green Beaver skin and body products; and produce from Butterfly Sky Farms. The products Nature’s Buzz is most known for are its organic meats and seafood. They stock beef, pork, chicken and lamb from Field Gate Organics, as well as bison and elk from The Elk Ranch. “Not a lot of stores do the fresh meat, so we try to focus on it,” Passmore says. Fraser Café & Table 40 If you’re looking for an upscale dining experience that’s also relaxed and a little bit urban, the Fraser Café is a great choice. A neighbourhood mainstay for five years, the café offers brunch, lunch and dinner and is owned by brothers Ross and Simon Fraser. It has a casual, slightly industrial vibe with gorgeous exposed light fixtures, dark colours and a solid wood bar. The food features local ingredients prepared simply and with style, with entrées including roasted crispy duck breast with barley risotto; filet of arctic char, pan-seared with butter and served with fenugreek curry and roasted potatoes; and butter-poached lobster served out of the shell with mashed potatoes and tempura vegetables. There is also an extensive list of wines and cocktails, including the Salt Lick, a concoction of grapefruit juice, vodka and Campari with a salted rim. Many of the wines come from the Niagara region and Prince Edward County. “We do try to source as locally as possible, and we try to do sustainable fish only, things like that,” says office manager and event coordinator Tristan Nagler. The café maintains its own organic garden in the summer months and also runs Table 40, a private space next door that can be rented out for parties and functions. Seating up to 40 people at a time, the space is rustic and earthy; the table is made from reclaimed wood dredged from the bottom of Lake Ontario. 7 Springfield Rd, frasercafe.ca

Books on Beechwood At a time when many independent bookstores are struggling to get by, Books on Beechwood has managed to remain a fixture in New Edinburgh for close to 20 years. There was a scare about a year ago when it looked as though the shop might go under, but at the last minute, an unlikely trio of high-tech businessmen bought the company’s shares and took over from the inside, keeping the name, staff and character in place. Unlike many chain bookstores, where housewares and trinkets seem to have become the main event, at Books on Beechwood the focus is still very much on actual books. The shop carries plenty of fiction, mystery and bestsellers and has an extensive children’s section. They also sell concert tickets for many of the city’s choirs and musical groups. “It draws in a lot of people that we wouldn’t normally see,” shopkeeper David Rostenne says. “People come from all over the city because we have tickets.” They also run the popular Titles at Table 40 with the nearby Fraser Café, where local authors present their latest releases over a meal provided by the restaurant. Rostenne says Books on Beechwood tries to reflect the neighbourhood with the books they keep in stock. “Because we’ve got a couple of retirement residences within a few blocks, we also have a lot of politics, history, biography, and then we’ve got a little bit of everything thrown in.”

Ola Cocina Technically, Ola Cocina is more in Vanier than New Edinburgh, but it’s worth the short walk to try its fish tacos with mango chutney. A fairly new addition to Ottawa’s foodie scene, the restaurant opened its doors in December and serves up authentic Mexican and Spanish fare, including tacos, quesadillas, tamales, huevos rancheros and the house specialty: big pans of seafood paella that can be carried home, heated up in the oven and served to a hungry crowd for a memorable dinner party. The staff, which includes owner Donna Chevrier, Arthur Thomas and chef Matt “Hollywood” Herbert, left Ottawa’s Pelican Fishery and Grill to open Ola Cocina. “It’s authentic — real Mexican. Not burritos, not Tex-Mex,” Chevrier says of the simple but scrumptious fare. She and her team hand roll all the corn tortillas used in the tacos and enchiladas and make their own braised meats, chorizo, salsas, crème fraîche and churros; everything except the churros is gluten-free. “There isn’t a thing that leaves here that we haven’t put together ourselves.” Tacos are $4 and come in veggie, chorizo, pulled beef or pork, pork belly, fish, duck confit, chicken tandoori and tofu. The restaurant itself is bright and airy with a rustic Mexican feel, and like everything else, Chevrier and her team renovated it by hand. It’s a small space but includes an outdoor patio for al-fresco dining when the weather’s nice. Open from 11:30am to 8pm Tuesday to Saturday, it’s a great spot for a light lunch or casual dinner that’s low in price and big on flavour.

The Handmade Bride

In a world dominated by matching linens and a “what will Aunt Martha think?” mentality, it can be hard for alternative brides to find what they’re looking for. Luckily, the alternative bridal movement is growing as more and more people seek to cast off the white taffeta shackles and instead plan weddings that buck convention. This is the concept behind The Handmade Bride. A relative newcomer to the New Edinburgh business scene, owner Meaghan Brunetti opened her doors in November 2013. She specializes in one-of-akind handmade and ecofriendly products and works with eight small-scale dress designers from Canada, the US and the UK. “It’s been overwhelmingly successful. I’ve been super excited and happy right from the first day that we opened,” Brunetti says. “We try to offer lots of customization, so a lot of the dresses in the store are white, but they come in lots of different colours and we could throw in, like, ’50s-style petticoats that are different colours. I think that our generation, we like to have everything custom and personalized to us.” Brunetti says that the rigid expectations of the wedding industry were part of what inspired her to open The Handmade Bride. “I wanted to provide an alternative to brides because I just don’t feel like that’s the way anything else is in our lives, and why should bridal or your wedding be like that?” This eschewing of typical bridal conventions makes The Handmade Bride a great option for queer couples. Brunetti recalls a pair of brides who came in separately to find their dresses in an effort to surprise each other on their wedding day. “I love seeing awesome people in awesome clothes. Clothes Encounters of a Second Time Sharing a building with an adjacent flower store, Clothes Encounters is a consignment shop specializing in designer labels. On any given day you might find a Dolce & Gabbana top, a Prada bag or Jimmy Choo shoes. The shop also carries a huge range of accessories, from sunglasses to jewellery to scarves. The upstairs area is packed full of women’s clothing, and there’s an extensive menswear section in the basement. Clothes Encounters has been on Beechwood for 33 years. “Because it’s all consignment items, it’s unique,” says shop associate An Chi Wong. While the one-of-a-kind nature of the merchandise means that you may not always find an item in exactly the size you’re looking for, part of the fun of consignment shopping is the hunt. Wong says many of the store’s established customers will come in once a week just to see what’s new. “Every day, things keep coming in.” Wong says the store sees a huge range of clients, with men and women of all ages finding treasures to take home. “Being here for so many years, we know [what kind of items our clients want],” she says. “It’s more eclectic style, trendy but not too trendy . . . different.” 67 Beechwood Ave, clothesencounters.ca

Art for everyday After Stonewall offers locally made items for the home STORY & PHOTOS BY JULIE CRUIKSHANK The Ottawa queer community waited with bated breath when After Stonewall was put up for sale in 2012. Thankfully, Michael Deyell, an Ottawa native who had been running a gallery in Prince Edward County, was there to answer the call. Deyell bought the LGBT bookstore from previous owner David Rimmer, reopening it with a decidedly different feel. He kept the name and the books but added his own spin, bringing in the beautiful and functional work of many local artists. “I just rebranded it a bit because literature is a form of art, so it ties into everything,” he says. The store now features a gallery with locally made jewellery, pottery

and dishes, and visual art. The bookstore occupies the back portion of the store; Deyell has reduced the number of copies on display and added a coffee table for customers, to create a cozier, more library-inspired feel. As an added bonus, Deyell is a licensed representative for a number of local wineries and can place and receive orders on behalf of customers. The trick has been maintaining After Stonewall’s appeal with its established clientele while also drawing in new business. “Being in a downtown community, you really have to appeal to everyone but keep the main focus of the GLBT literature alive,” he says. Deyell works with about 28 artists from Ontario and Quebec who cre-

ate beautiful and functional works of art for the home. “Everything is handmade,” he says. “I think a lot of people have an appreciation for functional work, especially if it’s Canadian-made . . . I think what appeals to people is that it is handmade, so when you’re actually using it, it’s made by an artist; it’s not made by production or a company.” Deyell carries a line of wooden bowls by Stinson Studios, a fatherand-sons operation based out of Tamworth, Ontario. Their work features natural wood that has been hollowed out and sanded into a variety of sizes. The effect is stunning — the bowls feel almost alive, and it’s easy to see why someone would want to fill them with salad greens for the ultimate earthy experience. Deyell has found that these are especially popular in the summer for outdoor dining and entertaining. After Stonewall also carries the work of a number of local potters and ceramic artists, including Melissa
Farquhar, of Rockwood, and Ottawa artists Kristin Anderson, Colette Beardall and Sarah Dobbin. Each piece of pottery is unique, featuring intricate textures and glazing techniques. “I’m a firm believer that you have to touch and feel it,” Deyell says. And, of course, it must be practical. “A lot of the pottery that I buy and promote is dishwasher-safe, it’s microwave-safe, some of it is oven-safe.” The store also carries glassware featuring intricate fused and dichroic glass. Even these pieces can be put in the dishwasher without risk of damage or flaking. “I’m a guy, so I put everything in the dishwasher,” Deyell says, chuckling. “Everything you see is functional. It can be used in your home. Basically, it’s art for everyday living.”

New man in town Warren Chase Urban Retreat for Men wants to make men’s grooming accessible and comfortable ADRIENNE ASCAH Warren Chase, the stylish Everyman, has come to Ottawa to help you up your game. Located on Industrial Avenue, Warren Chase Urban Retreat for Men opened in January and is already attracting a diverse male clientele. “We’ve had the hockey dads, we’ve had 13-year-old boys with acne, we’ve had just a wide variety of people,” co-owner Paul Cretes says. “What we’re trying to create here is an environment where any guy can come and receive services and feel comfortable. What you’ll see is a mixture of industrial, a little bit of a jazzy-blues feel — the industrial concrete mixed in with mechanics’ drawers and barber chairs.” Cretes, a stylist, and co-owner Trevor White, who previously owned a local headhunting firm for more than 16 years, want to make grooming accessible, stylish and comfortable for men. Gay or straight, young or old, a spa regular or an aesthetics virgin, White and Cretes say, Warren Chase is a place where every man can feel at home because Warren Chase is Everyman. “Warren Chase is the athlete, he’s the mechanic, he’s tall, he’s short, he’s young, he’s old,” White says. Hair and grooming services spruce up men from head to toe, from haircutting and colouring to pedicures, manicures, waxing, clipping, massage therapy, facials

and style coaching. The services are listed by number, like a Chinese or Thai takeout menu, so when you book your appointment, eavesdroppers won’t know you’re getting your back waxed. Once inside, the vibe is masculine, low-key and inviting. After touring spas in Miami, Toronto, Montreal and New York, Cretes and White put a lot of thought into not only their business’s look and marketing, but the way they deliver services. Nail salons and spas often have large rooms where clients sit or recline in a row, all getting their feet pumiced and their fingernails polished at the same time. For women who’ve grown up doing each other’s nails at slumber parties, that atmosphere doesn’t seem unusual, but men prefer privacy when it comes to grooming, Cretes says. At Warren Chase, grooming services are offered by male or female aestheticians in private rooms with an atmosphere White describes as “a man cave taken to the next level.” “All the rooms have smart TVs, so they can come in, they can plug their own music in and listen to their own music,” Cretes says. “They can watch the highlights of the game because there’s also satellite. They can bring in their USB key with the episode they missed of The Young and the Restless.”

It may have taken its sweet time getting here, but summer has finally arrived in the National Capital Region. For many of us, this means long days spent gazing longingly out our office windows, waiting for 5pm, when we can finally hit the patio and order something fruity and refreshing. It also means warmer weather and steamier nights that lend themselves only too well to a little bumping and grinding. Whatever your pleasure, Ottawa has a bevy of gay bars and queer-friendly establishments to help make your summer memorable. Whether you want to spend your nights sipping cocktails on the patio, heating it up on the dancefloor or belting one out with the drag queens at karaoke, there’s a bar for you. Just remember to drive sober, tip generously and never upstage China Doll.

If your idea of a good night out involves relaxing with some friends and a pint, Swizzles, which bills itself as “Ottawa’s only bias-free bar,” could be the place for you. The clientele is an eclectic mix of young and old, boys and girls, drag queens, metal heads and kinksters. “We’re a very small bar,” says owner Jess. “It’s an extremely diverse bar . . . everyone comes in and blends.” Of course, good things often come in small packages, and Swizzles has plenty going on to make the most of its space. Karaoke, run by Dog and Pony Sound, happens on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. On Saturdays, the bar hosts Death Disco for those into leather, PVC, latex and lace, set to an industrial music beat. There’s also a dedicated fetish event one Monday each month, and Thursday drag shows, hosted by queens Zelda Marshall and Alyna Moore, where up-and-comers can get up and practise their acts. As Jess points out, there’s no rule that patrons have to stick to “their” nights. “Everyone kind of crosses borders into each other’s nights and has a good time with it,” he says. The bar itself has more of a publike feel, geared less to dancing and more to drinks and conversation. “I wouldn’t call it a dance bar at all,” Jess says. “It’s a very odd, eclectic mix of things that just ended up working the way it does.” There are drink specials most nights, including $2.50 shooters on Tuesdays and $4.50 bar rail drinks on Saturdays. “People that come in usually have a great time because we’re very accommodating and it’s very comfortable,” Jess says. “We’re very focused on making sure no matter how you’re dressed, what you’re into, you’re just comfortable. You have nothing to worry about.”

The Centretown Pub Perhaps the most famous of Ottawa’s gay bars, the Centretown Pub is a well-known neighbourhood establishment. Housed in a beautiful old brick home on Somerset and known for its large outdoor patios, it has been an institution in Ottawa’s gay community for 30 years — an anniversary the pub is celebrating this year. CP, as it’s known to regulars, tends to cater to a slightly older crowd; it’s a popular watering hole for gay men to meet up, drink and socialize. Downstairs is the main pub area, while the upstairs is the dance bar. CP is the official home bar of the Ottawa Knights, who meet upstairs the second Saturday of every month to host theme events, giving the fetish community a chance to meet, mingle and share experiences. The Ottawa Wolves, an LGBT rugby team whose Rugbeer nights take place every fourth Saturday, also call the Centretown Pub home. “The main floor is the pub area — it’s always been the busy part, the meeting spot,” says Bruce Davis, who owns the pub with his partner, Mike Tasse. “Upstairs has been predominantly the dance bar, but it’s gone through reincarnations with go-go dancers and drag shows and various other events.” While there are no drag shows currently on the calendar, there is karaoke on the top floor on Sundays from 7pm to midnight. In addition to the main pub and the upstairs dance bar, Davis has reopened the downstairs bar area, which he says functions mainly as a meeting space. He and Tasse are also co-owners of the nearby Lewis Street Sauna. There are tons of events and specials at CP from month to month; Davis updates the website to let patrons know what’s coming up. The pub also plays host to frequent fundraisers and barbecues in the summer months, taking advantage of its copious outdoor space. Davis says the back patio seats 55 people and the front patio has space for approximately 30. Both are extremely popular in the summer months, perfect for relaxing with a beer and a few good friends.

Shanghai Restaurant The Shanghai, “The Shang” to regulars, is Chinatown’s de facto queer hangout. Now retired, d, Alan and Nancy Kwan opened the restaurant in 1971; many of their eight children remain involved with h the business in some way. Son Don handles bookings gs and dayto-day operations, and Ed, better known as China na Doll, keeps things glamorous. China Doll was born one night eight years ago when Ed threw on a wig to perform karaoke at a birthday day party. “Ed’s always been a ham,” says his brother, Don.. “He’s always been a natural performer.” China Doll now ow hosts karaoke every Saturday night and often on Fridays ays as well, making her entrance at 9pm sharp and delighting ng the crowd with her ad-libbed renditions of pop songs (they ey somehow always end up dirtier). She has a seemingly endless dless array of outfits and isn’t afraid to push customers out of their com comfort co o fort zones. Simulated blowjobs, references to adult diapers and a performance of Céline Dion and Andrea Bocelli’s “The Prayer” that all but blows the speakers out are all in a night for China Doll. The restaurant hosts frequent fundraisers and theme nights for organizations that include Venus Envy and the AIDS Committee of Ottawa. They also have a full bar and a full menu. If you’re looking for a fruity cocktail, try a South China Sea martini or a fruit smoothie with a shot of rum or vodka. And if you’re feeling peckish, try the coconut curry shrimp or the Shanghai special fried rice. For a queer-friendly good time with a family feel, you really can’t do better than the Shanghai. “The great thing about Shang is that we get a really diverse group of people,” Don says. “Everybody seems to get along.”

On a hot summer night, you can sip a cocktail while admiring the view of downtown or, if that doesn’t do it for you, the eye-candy inside. Owners Kelly Brant and Sue Plowman say they’ve seen a number of other bars open and close in the 17 years they’ve been around and attribute their success to the human connection they form with their customers. “We’re fortunate enough that we have a following and a clientele that have known us through the years, so we’re loyal to them, and they tend to be loyal to us,” Brant says. Another aspect she says works to the Lookout’s advantage is its open, laid-back atmosphere. “You could bring your mom with you and she would feel comfortable and safe. I don’t know if you can say that in a lot of nightclubs.” Patrons represent a range of ages, from the newly legal crowd to regulars who have been coming for years. Brant and Plowman work hard to keep the facilities up to date and looking their best — they recently redid the floors to keep them primed for dancing. In the summer, you can grab a seat on the balcony and enjoy a relaxing drink or two. “It’s really nice because you do look over the market from the balcony,” Brant says. The Lookout hosts the popular Friday Fixxx ladies’ night, from 11pm to 2am, which is always preceded by a drag king show. The bar is also home to the now-famous Thirsty Boy Thursday men’s night, which features $4 drinks and draught from 11pm to midnight. Saturday is drag night and generally sees a mix of both gay and straight patrons who flock to see Ottawa’s most fabulous queens perform. There’s also karaoke on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, weekly feature cocktails and nightly drink specials. “Our bartenders are really creative,” Plowman says. “They come up with these cocktails that people just love.”
