SYLUM SEEKER. Those two words strike fear into the heart of many Europeans. They can also, with the necessary spin, win or lose elections that side of the pond. Britain is known for deporting asylum seekers not fit to travel, never mind fit to return to countries where they could be killed. In 2008, the Brits kicked out Ama Sumani, a Ghanaian mother of two being kept alive on dialysis for bone marrow cancer. She had overstayed her visa. Sumani died in Accra a few weeks later, unable to access treatment. In Australia, asylum seekers arriving in boats were, until recently, either prevented from landing or locked up in refugee prisons. Most were fleeing wars in Asia and the Middle East in which Australia was engaged. Years behind barbed wire turned these people, who had already experienced horrors most will never know, into dysfunctional basket cases. Psychologists in Australia diagnosed some of the worst instances of posttraumatic stress disorder they’d ever seen after refugees and their children spent months, sometimes years, in confinement. Sometime after the Cold War, when many claimants were “good” refugees escaping communism, the words refugee and asylum seeker became synonymous with opportunistic aliens pounding down our doors, threatening to change the face of our “civilized” society. This is baseless if you think about it. If I was prepared to get in a boat with my family and our few belongings and sail across treacherous waters to some foreign country where I could be arrested or worse, my life at home would have to really suck. Gay asylum seekers, like the vast majority of those prepared to forever leave their countries, are most often fleeing the prospect of murder, torture, arrest or a life in isolation. Last month, Xtra spoke to gay refugees in Paris, discovering that although many have escaped such barbarity, they continue to face lives in limbo in Europe. France maintains a “safe list” of countries where it says gay people are not persecuted. The list contains places like Senegal, where police regularly imprison gays and lesbians based on perceived sexual orientation. The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission notes of Senegal that it is a “country in which same-sex relations are
illegal, homophobia is widespread, and incitement toward violence against those perceived to be lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender is often encouraged by politicians and religious leaders.” This could describe many countries in Africa and the Middle East where life for gays remains nasty and brutish. Canada’s track record on this front has been spotty. While the Harper Conservatives have made international overtures about the need to decriminalize homosexuality, their behaviour at home has been much less commendable. For example, in 2008 they deported Kulenthiran Amirthalingam to Malaysia, where he had already spent time behind bars because he is gay. Canada’s guidelines for accepting refugees are based on the United Nations’ 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. This document does not make explicit provisions for gay refugees, so it is incumbent on claimants to prove not only that they are gay, but also that their sexuality would put them at danger in their home countries. It is peculiar that those who have spent their lives trying to conceal and deny their sexuality have to then prove they are gay in the refugee application process. Last March, Immigration Minister Jason Kenney announced a pilot project with the Rainbow Refugee Committee to help sponsor gay refugees who face persecution. At the time Kenney said Canada has a history of being a safe haven, noting that reaching out to private sponsors was “vital to refugees in need of protection.” But in December, the government changed its mind, instead proposing rule changes that both the Rainbow Refugee Committee and the Canadian Council for Refugees say will make it much harder for gay refugees to find safety in Canada. The government could change its mind and bolster Canada’s reputation as a safe haven for gay refugees. If Stephen Harper truly wants to create change for gay people abroad, he can start at home, opening the doors to all those who would be killed or arrested elsewhere. Currently, there is no international institution that attends exclusively to the issue of gay refugees. Canada should take the lead in launching such an organization. If the government does nothing and continues to backtrack on promises to the gay community, both Canadians and despotic, homophobic world leaders will know our government’s pro-gay statements are nothing but empty words. Pride bylaw interpretation I HAVE BEEN WATCHING THIS debate with interest (“Another Pride Society Board Member Resigns,” xtra.ca, Feb 10). It seems at the AGM one member had three votes, which I think is unfair. In any nonprofit or community organization, the one person/one vote rule, to the best of my knowledge, always applies. I think there is genuine concern in the community over this flawed process which was allowed at the AGM. It obviously needs to be addressed. Many feel the president wrongly allowed his business partner to exercise three votes, and this is where the perception of conflict of interest regarding President Coolen lies. I am hopeful that Mr Coolen will realize that he made a mistake in the allocation of numerous votes to his business partner. It seems what we have are contrary viewpoints regarding interpretation of the bylaws, and hopefully resolution will come if the various parties sit down together and work out a solution to this conflict. Mr Coolen could also demonstrate leadership by suggesting that Pride members make changes to the bylaws which make clear that the one member/one vote rule applies in all voting procedures. This will ensure that all members are equal to each other and leaves no room for different interpretations of the bylaws. I know I plan to attend the executive board meeting and ask Mr Coolen to do exactly this. Jamie Lee Hamilton Vancouver, BC
Appeal the ruling MY EXPECTATION IS THAT this ruling will be appealed (“Can’t Be a Gaybashing Outside a Gay Area?” xtra.ca, Feb 2). First of all, a hate crime is a hate crime regardless of where it takes place. Secondly, the Drive has a high concentration of GLBT inhabitants, running a close second to the West End. The WEBIA came into conflict with the gay community in 2008 when the rainbow banners adorning Davie St’s lamp standards suddenly disappeared, replaced by banners promoting that year’s Triathlon World Championships, which the BIA co-hosted. Hellyar, who was at the forefront of the controversy, further angered the community when she told Xtra in July 2008 that she never planned to put the rainbow banners back up after the triathlon and that new banners were to replace them. But in the midst of community outcry against the rainbows’ removal, the triathlon banners came down sooner than planned, and the rainbow banners went back up. Those banners now run from Burrard to Broughton streets — the three and a half blocks that demarcate the Village. Nicholson says Davie St is a queer destination for visitors from around the world and should be worked with as such. “If your customer base is gay and lesbian, look after them,” he says. “That is just smart business.” “Why would you do that? It doesn’t make any sense,” Nicholson says of the rainbow banner removal. “If you’re going to make a change like that, it should be in consultation with everyone. “The banner flags are great,” he continues, saying that if anyone has a better idea to help identify the queer village to bring it forward. Little Sister’s co-owner Jim Deva says he hopes the new executive director “is somebody who realizes the potential of the Davie Village . . . to give it the promotion it needs.”
The board has hired a company to find a new executive director, a search Nicholson says is for “a visionary, someone that can look into the future, somebody that has really strong communications skills, someone that can reach out to stakeholders.” He says that after eight years, the split between the WEBIA and Hellyar was amicable. There was no contract. Nicholson says the WEBIA’s different direction will now be the subject of a strategic planning process borne out of a study currently underway. But, he adds, WEBIA members want the Davie, Denman and Robson areas to be distinct from each other. Part of the new direction will be further outreach to Pride. “How many people are attending Pride?” Nicholson asks. “What are we doing to encourage repeat business?” Part of what happens in the Davie Village with the WEBIA will be contingent on the municipal planning process expected to get underway this spring, he says. The purpose of the process is to gauge community needs, Kevin McNaney, of the City of Vancouver’s planning department, recently told Xtra. Deva says the WEBIA sponsored a planning session late last fall. One idea that was advanced, and which Deva agrees with, is to widen Davie Village sidewalks and to move metred parking into the alleys. He’d like to see the street be less a vehicular thoroughfare and more of a peoplebased one where residents and visitors can engage. “The Village has to have that vibrancy,” Deva says. “We need a reason for them to be in the Village. It’s the life in the Village; it’s the life on the street.” Nicholson sees the WEBIA doing a number of things differently. He says the group plans to raise its profile through a revitalized web presence and the use of Facebook and Twitter. He also wants to compile statistics so people coming into the area to do business have an idea of demographics. Nicholson also wants to increase the WEBIA’s relationship with Tourism Vancouver so businesses in the association’s orbit can plan for and capitalize on conventions that are in town.

Denike and Woo allege defamation Action intended to silence or intimidate, Bacchus counters Jeremy Hainsworth ALLEGATIONS OF DEFAMATION HAVE been made against six Vancouver School Board trustees by two other trustees. The six Vision and COPE trustees received a letter on Feb 6 from lawyer Jonathan Tweedale, acting for NPA trustees Ken Denike and Sophia Woo, both of whom appeared in a pair of videos concerning an antihomophobia program and the district’s anti-discrimination policies. The letter demands that chair Patti Bacchus and trustees Mike Lombardi, Allan Wong, Ken Clement, Cherie Payne and Rob Wynen “cease and desist in this present defamatory campaign and refocus your energies on serving the District under the jurisdiction conferred on you as Trustees pursuant to the School Act.” The letter alleges the six have made statements that Denike and Woo oppose board anti-discrimination policies, have engaged in fanning “homophobic fear,” have engaged in “stoking fear and promoting hate,” oppose policies designed to create inclusive and safe school environments, and have misrepresented non-discrimination policies to members of the public. “The Defamatory Statements are false and misleading,” the letter says. Further, the letter says, the “attacks” on Woo and Denike “appear to my clients as calculated to cause damage to their reputations for your own perceived political gain.” Bacchus tells Xtra that in general, cease-and-desist letters are intended to silence questions or criticisms about the activities of those sending them.
“Generally, these letters are what we call ‘chill’ letters, intended to chill or intimidate public officials,” she alleges. She says she and her fellow trustees are seeking legal advice and will respond to Tweedale through their lawyers. Denike and Woo made headlines in December when they appeared in a fundraising video posted by an American anti-gay-marriage group to discuss their concerns about Out in Schools, a local anti-homophobia program.
WE NO LONGER HAVE CONFIDENCE IN THESE TRUSTEES. —Susan Lambert Tweedale notes in his Feb 6 letter to the six trustees that the “unauthorized video” was removed within 48 hours of the Marriage Anti-Defamation Alliance (MADA) receiving a letter he sent on Jan 10. The January letter says MADA’s use of the video created false and misleading impressions, including that Denike and Woo support MADA, that they are supporters of organized opposition to same-sex marriage, and that they believe speech in support of traditional marriage is being suppressed. It says any waivers signed by Denike and Woo were on the understanding the footage was to be used around the issue of ongoing monitoring of school-sanctioned web materials and that the footage was to be used for a “US documentary program.”
“Both those representations are false,” Tweedale’s January letter says. “My clients have suffered and continue to suffer damage as a result of your misrepresentations and the false and misleading portrayal of my clients in the Unauthorized Video.” A second video posted to YouTube on Aug 20 surfaced a day after the MADA one, showing Denike and Woo urging people at a Christian Social Concern Fellowship picnic to vote for them if attendees want to block the implementation of anti-homophobia policy in Vancouver. The VSB passed its anti-homophobia policy in 2004. “My clients have always been supporters of the Anti-Discrimination Policies, the values they give voice to and the protections they afford to members of the District’s school communities. None of the Anti-Discrimination Policies are criticized in the Picnic Video,” the Feb 6 letter states. The board voted to censure Denike and Woo. That censure is also challenged in the lawyer’s letter, which called the motion a continuation of “your defamatory campaign against my clients.” It says the censure was beyond the board’s powers. Further, it says, the board gave no notice of the motion. It says the alleged misconduct was not defined in advance, and time should have been set aside for a hearing and for evidence to be called. “The Impugned Resolution satisfied none of those requirements,” Tweedale’s letter says. When informed of the cease-anddesist letter, BC Teachers’ Federation president Susan Lambert told Xtra the activities of Woo and Denike have shaken her belief in their ability to uphold policies designed to keep children safe in schools. “We no longer have confidence in these trustees,” Lambert says.

No quorum, no board meeting ‘No board to do business,’ say VPS president and general manager Shauna Lewis
A VANCOUVER PRIDE SOCIETY board meeting set for Feb 15 was cancelled due to a lack of quorum. “There is no meeting because there are not enough directors to conduct business,” VPS general manager Scott Blythe told Xtra hours before the meeting was scheduled to begin. When asked if anyone in the community has expressed interest in filling any of the eight vacant seats, Blythe said he didn’t have that information and directed Xtra’s enquiries to the remaining four board members. On Feb 9, former VPS board member Ray Lam delivered a requisition for a special general meeting (SGM) to the VPS’s offices. Almost 40 requisitioners called for a meeting to address what they call “voting irregularities” during the reelection of Ken Coolen as president at the annual general meeting in January. They are demanding a reelection.

Asked if the VPS plans to hold an SGM, Blythe again directed Xtra to the board. “That’s a good question,” he said. “But I can’t speak on that. It’s not my decision. I’m an operational person.” Coolen also confirmed that business could not be conducted because of the lack of occupied seats on the board. “We cannot have a meeting because we have no board to do business,” he said. The VPS’s bylaws state that there must be at least five board members for business to be conducted. Only four board members remain after Trevor Ashcroft gave written notice of his resignationFeb 9. Asked what happens now, Coolen says he won’t be discussing board issues any further with media. “I will not be making any more comments until this issue is resolved,” he says.

Supreme Court reviewing rules in HIV nondisclosure cases Chief Justice suggests criminal responsibility test may be too vague Marcus McCann TWO GOVERNMENT LAWYERS GOT an earful from the Supreme Court of Canada Feb 8 as arguments got underway in Ottawa in two cases involving HIV nondisclosure. Judges pressed lawyers representing the offices of the Quebec and Manitoba attorneys general over their apparent disregard for scientific evidence with respect to the evolution of HIV treatment and viral load over the last 15 years. Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin also suggested that the test for criminal responsibility for nondisclosure, as it’s formulated, may be too vague to be useful. “How is that person supposed to know if they are committing a criminal act? If the answer is, ‘They can’t know for sure,’ then surely the crime isn’t really a crime. It would violate one of the fundamental principles of criminal law,” McLachlin said. “If you set the terms as broad as ‘You need to know what you’re getting yourself into,’ she added, “you’d be vitiating consent in thousands of consents every day . . . or night.”
The court is reviewing the rules set out in its 1998 Cuerrier decision, which required that HIV-positive people disclose their status to sexual partners if there is a “significant risk of serious bodily harm.” The attorneys general argued that all risk of infection is a “significant risk” and that contracting HIV/AIDS is a “serious bodily harm.” Elizabeth Thomson, a lawyer representing the attorney general of Manitoba, was interrupted by Justice Rosalie Abella within the first five minutes of the hearing. Increasingly pointed questions effectively derailed Thomson’s oral argument. Judges openly worried that the attorney general’s position, if adopted, would result in an absolute liability offence. Justice Abella called Manitoba’s position one with “no nuance, no gradations.” Justice Michael Moldaver said the justices were looking for a clear, intelligible test where HIV-positive people would not have to disclose in every circumstance. Moldaver twice referred to a trial decision in which a judge ruled that a poz person would not have a duty to disclose if he had both a low viral load and used
a condom. Moldaver referred to risk of transmission in those circumstances as “nonexistent or virtually nonexistent.” Chief Justice McLachlin suggested that in cases where the risk does not materialize — where no partner becomes HIV-positive — there may not be any crime at all. The judges’ comments are in no way binding. Often, the written judgments vary significantly from what is said in court. The cases, R v Mabior and R v DC, both involve HIV-nondisclosure where the partners of the accused did not become HIV-positive. Condom use and level of infectiousness — as measured by the number of copies of the virus in the bloodstream, referred to as viral load — were issues in both trials. The identity of the victims in both cases is covered by a publication ban. Amanda Sansregret, a legal aid lawyer from Manitoba who represents one of the two accused, gave a lively defence of her client. She argued that either condom use or low viral load ought to suffice as a defence. It’s a sentiment that echoes the submissions from AIDS service organizations made in advance of the hearing. HIV-positive partners who use condoms or have low viral loads simply don’t pose a high risk to their partners, she said.
“People have been lying in order to secure sexual consent from time immemorial,” Sansregret said. “If you really want to protect yourself, you should use a condom . . . it strikes me as the safest approach. “If you’re looking for a complete absence of risk, with all respect, abstinence is your answer.” The court asked equally pointed questions of Sansregret and another defence lawyer, Christian Desrosiers.

Abella asked whether access to postexposure prophylactics changes the math — noting that a partner of someone who doesn’t know his or her partner is HIV-positive will not know when it might be appropriate to use that kind of medication, thereby increasing his or her risk. She also asked about partners who may be especially vulnerable to
HIV transmission, for instance if they have coinfections. She said a poz partner may know the risk he poses in regular circumstances but may not be aware of the extra vulnerability of his partner. There was a single 10-minute presentation from a coalition of AIDS groups. Lead counsel Jonathan Shime described the current test as “an appropriate safeguard.” “We don’t need to criminalize everyone in order to have a predictable” law of HIV, he says. “Use of a condom means there is . . . intention. There is no recklessness.” The BC Civil Liberties Association and the Criminal Lawyers’ Association also presented briefs. Aside from closing comments, Quebec Public Health had the last word. Lucie Joncas told the court that public health is not helped by the overuse of the criminal law in this area. She gave two reasons: firstly, that the bulk of new infections come from people who do not yet know that they are HIVpositive, and secondly, that consistent use of condoms — rather than relying on partners’ representations of their HIV status — is the best way to protect the health of Canadians. SURE SIGN OF SPRING IN Vancouver is the advent of each year’s Empress Ball. There are hints of it everywhere right now. Amidst the rustle of silk and swish of chiffon, the glitter of rhinestones and clatter of spike heels, the men in dresses are getting ready for the highlight of their year. I confess to a soft spot for men in dresses because, along with many of my generation, I know they were our community’s earliest freedom fighters. From the rage of the Stonewall riots of 1969 to the celebrated “Hookers on Davie” of the ’80s, they were the ones who endured public scorn and frequent violence in the early struggle to stake out a safe place in the world for all of us. I use the phrase “men in dresses” because it is a term that ted northe, Empress of Canada and founder of Canada’s court system, uses to describe himself, and somehow it resonates. We now understand that there is a not always coherent continuum from those men in dresses through drag queens to transvestites to transsexuals to . . . well, where will it end? We continue to explore our horizons. But for many of us an understanding of that world began with men in dresses, and it is those pioneers I salute today as their successors prepare for the March 17 Coronation XLI and Empress XL Kamelle Toe’s passing of the gilded baton. Let me tell you about the first time I ever saw men in dresses. The setting was the tiny basement stage at Davie St’s Champagne Charlie’s in the spring of 1970. Dee Dee Ambrose was the reigning diva, and her doo-wop girls were the whip-slender Sandy St Peters and the tall, legs-up-to-here Charity. Champagne Charlie’s was a dimly lit poor man’s vision of the Moulin Rouge. All blood-and-bruises colouring, dark corners and cabaret tables fanned out around a tiny central stage area, not much bigger than your kitchen floor. As I edged my way to a table, the ’70s club music gradually faded and suddenly the room was filled with the theatrical, booming voice of DJ Doug Reid announcing, “Good evening ladies and gentlemen,” (was he talking about us?) “and welcome to Champagne Charlie’s! . . . And now,
the stars of our show, Mr Dee Dee Ambrose (pause for applause) . . . Charity! (more applause) and (pause) Mr (pause) Sandy (pause) St Peters!” The house went wild, in a peculiarly ’70s kind of room-full-of-fags-goingwild way, and the show was on. For this first-timer it was exciting to witness these larger-than-life selfmade creatures reach down deep into their innermost beings to play out under the spotlights fantasies that many of the rest of us had perhaps rehearsed more modestly in our bathrobes and a pair of Mom’s earrings. If you are of a certain age you might have been there that night, too. I can imagine you smiling a bit now as you tap your toes to the remembered music. Was it “If You Don’t See What You Want Up Here,” or “Cocktails for Two”? Or the irresistible Salvation Army song that was one of Sandy’s signature pieces? If you weren’t there, you must remember other magic-filled nights when men in dresses created a private and slightly subversive world where we could sing along with Mae and Sophie and Judy, and later Liza and Tina and Barbra, and indulge whatever fantasies we might, safe from the eyes of a judgmental world. From the stars of that night at Champagne Charlie’s, through the decades that brought us Bill Harvey and Bobbie Callicoatte, not to forget Starlette and Dusty Ryan, down to more recent divas like Willie Taylor and Joan-E, it’s been men in dresses who have entertained us, rallied our sense of community, and tirelessly raised funds for countless worthy causes — all of which they continue to do. Google “Vancouver drag queens” and you’ll find that many performances of the past decade are posted for posterity. What a pity we didn’t have YouTube in the ’70s! I have a dear friend who loathes drag queens, likening them to blackface minstrel shows. I doubt we’ll ever be able to discuss the topic rationally, because my affection for men in dresses isn’t rational. I just know that they are among my heroes. Party on, girls! Comedy, with a dash of drama Ghost Light Projects launches with mini queer theatre fest

T’S HARD TO BE AN ARTIST IN VANcouver,” Randie Parliament contends. “I don’t submit to theatre companies anymore. I’ll produce it,” he says. Parliament, creator of Ghost Light Projects, is kick-starting the company’s 2012 season with a series of queer-friendly plays with project coordinator, and fellow playwright, Jordan Patterson. The two gay artists are hoping to expand the queer live theatre industry in Vancouver, a scene they say is tough to break into. “When I got to Vancouver, the Vancouver art scene was so dismissive,” says Patterson, who attended theatre school in Toronto before heading west. “I got hate mail.” He says the early rejection he experienced in his growth as an artist highlights how exclusive the industry can be. “It wasn’t homophobia. What I realize now at 46 years old is that there’s only a certain amount of money to go around, and they [veteran producers and playwrights] are not going to let anyone [new] take their money,” Patterson says. Parliament, who has been a producer for 12 years and has written many plays, agrees. “I went to Toronto for three years and was going to give up theatre altogether. But I couldn’t get away from it because the love was there. I started producing again, and once you start you just can’t stop,” he says. “Most of the time I just find projects that I’m passionate about, and I don’t see anyone producing them so I produce them.” Ghost Light Projects has brought such shows as Debbie Does Dallas: The Musical, The Vagina Monologues and Hedwig and the Angry Inch to the Toronto stage. Next month the company will launch five queer-friendly plays in Vancouver: Mother May I, The Pitch, Drag Queens on Trial, The Great American Trailer Park Musical and The Boys in the Band. Parliament’s play, Mother May I, delves into the realities of being gay in a small Prairie town, when the protagonist travels to his homestead to help handle his parents’ affairs. “There’s a bit of comedy and a bit of crazy drama,

but it’s also pretty serious,” he notes. In contrast, Patterson’s autobiographical play, The Pitch, recounts a dark period in the playwright’s life. “It’s about a period in my life where I met a boy and we started doing drugs together. It’s about my whole experience into the drug culture,” he says. But where Parliament takes his audience on a more sober ride, Patterson says his work is a comedy filled with camp and jest. During the series, Parliament and Patterson will also collaborate with playwright Sky Gilbert and two others from the United States. “We’re just gung ho,” Patterson says. “These projects are what I really want to do, and I want to see other people taking chances on projects that actually have some social relevance and real gusto.” Parliament and Patterson maintain that one must follow one’s passion before the cash can flow. But Patterson says that when he was scouting actors to star in a play about drag queens, he looked specifically to performers in the gay community and was shot down due to pay-scale limitations. “What I find interesting is that there are millions of people that call themselves actors in Vancouver, that have
been working in restaurants and haven’t booked a gig for 20 years, and yet they don’t want to do a play. But they’ll spend thousands of dollars on acting classes. What’s the point? It doesn’t make any sense not to out yourself in a play,” says Patterson. “That’s where you’re going to get your experience.” But these issues are not peculiar to Vancouver, he acknowledges. “Everybody talks up the Toronto art scene, but it has the same challenges.” In the meantime, Patterson and Parliament just hope audiences will enjoy their series. “I hope it solidifies us as people to be watched for in terms of what we are going to do in the future, in Vancouver and in Canada,” Parliament says. “I hope people just have a fucking good time,” he adds with a smile.

WE N T TO WH IST L E R ON A Greyhound. I know — Xtra is so cheap. Where was my ’copter? I was excited because I’d been hearing tons of hype about WinterPride (it was as loud as the hype that got Adele all those Grammys). Although tradition, majestic scenery, sport, camaraderie and parties helped draw an estimated 2,500 bodies to Whistler for the 20th annual WinterPride, the strongest allure is the beautiful people. For someone whose athleticism doesn’t go beyond plucking his eyebrows and who, while most were on the slopes, spent the daytime wandering shops, cafés and art galleries, it was nice to be surrounded by so many aphrodisiacs. “There’s sure no shortage of pretty things to look at,” Ireland’s Bradon Heaney agreed with a sly smile. I don’t think he was referring just to the picturesque views or tacky tourist stores (with rainbow flags in the windows to celebrate
and capitalize!). WinterPride draws people from all over the world; the entire week is like a UN hot-tub orgy. Maybe I was intoxicated by the pristine mountain air (or, er, the wine I was inhaling like said air), but Whistler offers total escapism. Forget Vegas. What happens in the mountains stays in the mountains, immortalized by gossiping locals. (“I saw a threesome in a Blackcomb gondola, eh.”) Of course, not everyone is in it for the sex. There’s that whole skiing/snowboarding/carpe diem thing, too. Australian Marcus Atkinson said he wanted to check out WinterPride because “Canadians are so friendly. Then I get up here and there are a lot of Australians. I can’t bloody get away from them!” Australians did seem to dominate the international scene, but I also met people from Asia, the US and Europe. “Whistler becomes a cosmopolis for a week,” Johanna Ruiz, from New York City, told me during the Pride march. “I feel like I could pick up a few new languages. It’s not like Pride where it’s just your city celebrating. Here, every city comes together. Every person comes together. I mean, look around!”
I decided that to get intimate with my (cute) interview subjects, we needed to get naked. For time efficiency and multitasking reasons, obviously! Barbara Walters has her tactics, and I have mine. My first victim was hunky Australian Sam Dartnell, who I met at the sold-out pool party. The only complaints I heard all night were that the event needed a second bar and to end later. Sam and I had watersport fun (no, not that kind, you slut!) and then went back to his room at the Hilton, where he told me, “This is my third year coming up. It’s a break from the real world, and I always make friends. Not just Facebook friends, either,” he laughs. “Some of the people I met a couple years ago from the UK are here again this year, so it’s kind of a reunion.” The next night I met two Bostonians, Kurt Hosman and Rick Martens, at après-ski. We decided to take the party back to their hotel (which, coincidentally, also happened to be the Hilton). Paris isn’t the only one who can make those walls blush! “We come every year,” Kurt told me. “There’s always good people, not to mention the best skiing in North

It sort of feels like a home away from home, because every year we see a lot of the same faces, and the whole Whistler community really embraces the Pride spirit, so there’s a sense of belonging here.” “I’d say Whistler embraces it more and more each year,” Rick added. “It feels like the village is excited to have us. Maybe that’s why it’s successful. People like feeling wanted.” Manitoba’s Rose Watson, who I met at Purrlesque (which featured Burgundy Brixx and Madame Mae I) told me it was her first time at “pretty much everything. “I’m learning to ski, I’ve never seen burlesque or a real comedy show. So I’m here for the new experiences. And everyone starts drinking in the afternoon,” she laughed. “If I don’t just stay forever, I’ll definitely be back.” I snagged a sit-down with WinterPride coordinator Dean Nelson, and don’t worry — I kept this one platonic. Reflecting on how he first became involved with ski week (in a takeover many hailed as the rescue of an event at risk of going defunct), he told me he came in with little expectation. “I just wanted to keep things going. I didn’t know I was going to love doing it so much.” When asked how the 20th anniversary compared to previous years, he said it was similar, with some differences. “We had our first Pride march, which was very exciting. The mayor [Nancy Wilhelm-Morden] came in and did the proclamation, which was the first time any mayor at a ski resort in the world has done that.” Nelson told Xtra prior to the start of WinterPride that the event has always had government’s support in principle,
but receiving civic status has great symbolic import. “This is being very public about it and actually flying the Pride flag at the municipal hall, so when our international guests are coming in and seeing this type of proactive action, that’s really meaningful,” he said. “It just signals to the LGBT community that Whistler takes our community very seriously, and they appreciate our community and want to make sure that everybody understands that they embrace diversity and it’s not just a marketing ploy — it’s actually in the fabric of our community.” Dean and his partner Ken Coolen kept the week running smoothly and offered all the party necessities, from bear to fetish to circuit (so many circuit queens came up for the weekend, being in Whistler village was like being inside a disc-ho ball). Celebrities presents Snowstorm was a rave success that Syren hailed as “The best night in drag I’ve ever had!” Elsewhere, a herd of gays opted to take over Buffalo Bills after being turned off by the high ticket prices to the Snowball (which featured DJ Manny Lehman and an alluring light show by Yuriy Rzhemovskiy). By then I was already picking up bed bugs on the Greyhound home, but I heard from friends that the spontaneity was “off the hook.” Proving that for 20 years WinterPride has prospered because the party is where the heart is.

HE SILICONE DIARIES IS AN MTF transformation story that reveals everything that comes in the middle. From shemale porn, to Mexican doctors who will “suck the man out of your face,” to Tommy Lee’s big cock (a staple in every trans journey). Nina Arsenault is glamorous, vulnerable and funny. Before seeing this play I couldn’t grasp what it would be like to feel you’re the opposite gender than who you are biologically. Too many queens act like the cunts they wish they had, so it’s refreshing when a pro can walk into a dressing room and put everyone at ease, introducing herself to her gawkers and making them feel like old friends. The competition lagged whenever the competitors weren’t performing and had to improvise in front of the crowd. They only seemed comfortable in their stilettos doing moves they’d rehearsed, but there were some prime moments that made up for it, like Iona Whipp impersonating Liza Minnelli. I knew then she was

ALIFORNIA BOYS, BY COLT STUDIO Group, begins in the bedroom of Adrian Long. Despite the 400-thread-count sheets, this lanky, longhair looks like a dirty hippy catching a nap in someone else’s bed. But after he’s joined by sultry-eyed Marc Dylan, the impression changes to that of dopey surfer with an unending erection. It’s a fine line there. Long and Dylan get right down to it. They kiss, lick and suck but not in that order. It’s like they’re going through a checklist of gay sex options, and they really don’t miss many. Dylan is a surprisingly adept bottom — and he’s not only good at it, but loves doing it. They get so into each other that at one point Dylan reaches across for stability and catches Long on the cheekbone with a little jab. It doesn’t stop them in the least. California Boys brings together some of Colt Studio Group’s hottest models for a clean, well-made film. Director Max Phillips deserves all the praise that isn’t already lauded upon the rippling abs of the cast.
