Comment C’mon, Christy Naked Eye Robin Perelle

I

T WAS THEIR SMILES THAT MADE me smile. That, and their matching pink T-shirts. It’s not every day you see seven school trustees, particularly in a less than urban district, embrace their constituents’ request for antihomophobia policy with such a show of pink pleasure. Granted, I wasn’t at the meeting, and I hear the previous Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows board had already passed a resolution to develop such a policy last June, only to let it languish in its actual development. So the trustees’ recent show of support may be little more than show. But I’m willing to give those seemingly sincere smiles the benefit of the doubt. If the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows trustees come through, they’ll be the 16th school district in BC to pass anti-homophobia policy without any instruction or leadership from the provincial government. The Vancouver and Victoria boards led the way in 2004, Burnaby most recently followed suit in a surprisingly contentious move last May, and several more districts are now being approached by students and teachers with similar requests, successful templates in hand. If you’re a glass-half-full kind of person, you might say that momentum is building from the bottom up, despite the lack of leadership on top. One quarter of BC’s 60 school districts have now recognized the importance of explicitly naming and prohibiting homophobic harassment, and teaching kids to embrace rather than fear difference. But that leaves 75 percent. The progress may be heartening, but the math is still clear: the glass is indisputably three-quarters empty. This despite our premier’s repeated promises to address homophobia in schools and make it a priority. On the eve of the Pink Shirt Day rally she skipped in Vancouver on Feb 29, Christy Clark offered a few more promises to prioritize, as she fielded tough questions from gay NDP MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert, who’s as tired of waiting for change as I am. “I promise the member this,” Clark responded, “we will work with him to make sure that we

bring in the best legislation, the best policy, the best methods we possibly can for addressing this issue in workplaces, in schools and in homes for all people across British Columbia.” Long on word count, short on substance. If legislation = policy = methods, then the only thing we’ve learned from Clark’s little soliloquy is that she promises the best — while so far delivering nothing on the antihomophobia front. I t ’s s i m p l e m a t h . Z e r o homophobia-specific legislation since she became premier + zero homophobia-specific legislation while she was education minister from 2001 to 2004 (despite the Safe Schools Task Force report she oversaw that named homophobia as a problem in schools) = zero. Even I can handle that equation, and I’m computationally challenged. Still, Clark’s got no shortage of promises for us. “If I become premier, one of the very clear directives I am going to give to the education minister is I want you to deal with bullying in schools as a top priority,” she told Xtra as she courted the gay vote in January 2011’s Liberal leadership race with a strategic acknowledgment of how pervasive homophobia is in schools. “Homophobic bullying is the number-one form of it, so yes, they have to make sure that’s part of what they’re targeting when they target bullies,” Clark said. That was more than a year ago. “When will she stop just expressing concern, and when will she, now that she’s premier and has been premier for over a year, actually do something about it?” Chandra Herbert pressed. “Our kids are counting on us.” Clark’s response? “We will be taking action on this, as I promised, in this, our second session of the legislature since I’ve been premier. We will be doing that this session,” she promised. First it was when she became premier. Now it’s in the second session of her premiership. Okay, Christy, let’s give you the unearned benefit of the doubt. You’ve got until May 31 to introduce the “best legislation, the best policy, the best methods” to specifically address homophobia in BC’s schools. We’re waiting. We’ve been waiting for a while. INBOX Chandra Herbert impresses IF ONLY ALL POLITICIANS were more like Spencer: in touch, humble, active on issues important to us and keen to make progress on the issues that make our city (and province) more caring, responsible, vibrant and livable. We would all be better off. Politicians everywhere should take note on how Spencer works for his community. Hats off to this remarkable man and friend to all of us. Mischa Bartkow Vancouver, BC I CAN COUNT ON ONE HAND the number of politicians I’ve seen in my life who have the courage to truly advocate for their constituents and speak out on issues that may be unpopular at times, but work to serve the most marginalized in society. Spencer Chandra-Herbert not only talks the talk, but walks the walk on that score. Unlike others, he’s not in politics for personal accolades or to boost his profile. I’ve known him since he was a teen and believe he truly is there to serve our community. I wish I lived in his riding rather than one where my MLA is basically silent and pretty useless. Spencer and Romi are wonderful role models for the queer community, and their actions speak louder than any words ever could. It is refreshing to see an MLA not thinking about how to get reelected, but rather consulting with community to ask if he is truly serving their needs. James Chamberlain Vancouver, BC SO, LOSING BC LIBERAL candidate Laura McDiarmid doesn’t think MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert is doing a very good job representing our community in Victoria? She rather condescendingly refers to him “as a nice young man.” Ms McDiarmid says “there’s lot more in the West End than the renters’ issue and queerbashing.” There are many issues in our community, but those two are of great importance. I guess, since the BC Liberals don’t think these are issues of any concern, then they are not important. We lived with that attitude during the dark days of Lorne Mayencourt. I, along with a huge number of West Enders, am extremely pleased that our MLA defeated McDiarmid. We have an outstanding representative who isn’t afraid to take on issues and to help his constituents. Just think: had the election gone the other way, we would, again, have had a yes-person sitting beside Gordon Campbell and Christy Clark. Run again, Laura, for the BC Liberals in the West End. I relish seeing an even larger defeat. Ron Stipp Vancouver, BC I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY to work with Spencer Chandra Herbert over a number of years in my past role as president of the Coal Harbour Residents Association, both

while he was on the Parks Board, and as our MLA. To me, the most important thing an elected official can do is be accessible. If I can’t sit down and talk to a person face to face or get an email answered, then I don’t care what their policy positions are. Spencer has been the most accessible politician I have ever dealt with. He is both responsive and empathetic. Over the years he has been very helpful to the Coal Harbour Residents Association and supportive of our issues, and we appreciate him. In addition, as a gay man, I genuinely feel represented in the legislature when I see Spencer at work. He will definitely have my vote in the next election. Doug McClelland Vancouver, BC

comment Spencer Chandra Herbert is a welcome reminder that a politician can (and should!) be a real community leader and a force for good [“Not Your Average Politician,” Xtra #484, March 8]. He gives us all hope. —Diana Sandberg Vancouver, BC To comment, go to xtra.ca.

Not sold on paying for sex WE LIVE IN A SOCIETY THAT cultivates the credo of instant gratification [“The Best Sex of My Life,” Xtra #482, Feb 9]. We also live in a society where there are many sexually and emotionally damaged individuals, some not able to form meaningful or healthy human relationships. And now that society has relaxed its stands on morality and what is “permissible” we get people who sing the glories of instant gratification, as though they had reached some significant spiritual enlightenment by their acts. Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but to me kissing a stranger, letting them fondle or enter my body, or vice versa, is an insult to all I hold valuable in the core of who I am. Not only is this person a complete stranger — I don’t really have a clue of their issues, their personality, their hidden vices or virtues, their disease history — and I’m granting them access to all of who I am? Uh, there’s something tragically pathological about this scene. Perhaps if I was young again, stupid again, numb again . . . perhaps if I was arrogant and self-engrossed enough to worship the “made-up” bodies and lives of others . . . then perhaps I could dunk my head in the “mysteries” of sensory gratification and sing its glory because I’d know no other song. And because, drunk with my own vanity and naiveté, I could gain the approval

of those who also swim in the same shallow, stinking river. Sorry, but I don’t buy it. Loving and the act of loving; merging with another human being, becoming vulnerable and open and sharing the core of who you are with another, is a sacred act. If sex becomes simply another commodity that can be bought and sold on the marketplace, and prostitution is elevated to a “celebrated” position, we are indeed broken and deluded souls. Sure, you can pay for sex. What takes real guts is to know yourself as a human and to earn the intimacy of another, intimacy that can be truly celebrated, not just empty calories under neon lights. Sorry if I appear to be somewhat jaded, but substance is substance and there is no substitute for it. I sing the glory of what is true, tested and authentic. Barry Gonzales Vancouver, BC

Thanks, Xtra T HAN KS TO X T R A FOR alerting readers to the vacancies on the various City of Vancouver advisory boards. Had I not picked up Xtra, I wouldn’t have known about them. I applied for two committees: the LGBT Advisory Committee and the Seniors’ Advisory Committee. I just learned that I’ve been appointed to the latter. I would’ve preferred the former, but, given that I emphasized my background in LGBT aging, I think they figured that I’d be a better fit for the seniors’ committee. Hopefully I’ll be able to get some LGBT aging issues on city hall’s radar now (though I anticipate it’ll be a bit harder now that Ellen Woodsworth is no longer there). Eddy Elmer Vancouver, BC

Full robo-call inquiry I’VE BEEN READING ABOUT the worsening robo-call election fraud scandal with mounting disgust. There are reports that illegal calls took place in dozens of key swing ridings all over the country. It takes serious money and major phone-number databases to target non-Conservative voters in multiple close ridings. Who paid? Where did the lists come from? Who decided that this was a viable and morally supportable tactic? We need full, immediate and publicly accountable investigations that include all affected ridings. We need a public inquiry to learn the whole truth and restore the basic integrity of our democracy. Election fraud is a crime and a direct attack on the foundation of our democracy. If you get caught stealing, you don’t get to keep the goods. If the party in government is found to be responsible for systematic electoral fraud, then there must be new elections. We’ve gone from a country that fosters emerging democracies to one that risks becoming a submerging democracy. Christine Malec Toronto, ON

The folks at Ben & Jerry’s have renamed their apple pie ice cream flavour Apple-y Ever After, in support of making gay marriage legit in Britain — and they’ve created a Facebook app encouraging people to “marry” same-sex friends. It’s not the first time they’ve devoted a flavour to the cause: Chubby Hubby was converted to Hubby Hubby when B&J’s home state of Vermont passed same-sex marriage legislation in 2009. Right about now, One Million Moms are having a collective stroke.

All together now: call for bigoted boycott = consumer curiosity = ka-ching at the cash register. Or a public shaming. And yet the anti-gay group One Million Moms continues to flub this easy equation. Not content to slink away after the shellacking they got from trying to bounce Ellen DeGeneres from her JCPenney spokesperson gig, the Moms mob tried to intimidate the Toys “R” Us chain into pulling an issue of an Archie comic featuring a gay wedding with their clichéd “save the children” wailing. Result: sold-out issue. Remedial political acumen, anyone?

I think that it’s unnatural, it’s detrimental and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization. ‘80s teen star Kirk Cameron, now 41 and a born-again Christian, describes homosexuality to CNN’s Piers Morgan on March 2. “I know Growing Pains was only a tv show, but I have to think both Alan Thicke & Joanna Kerns must feel they failed as parents tonight,” actor Josh Charles tweets in response.

I’m flattered… I like it very much. Ewan McGregor’s response to the CBC’s George Stroumboulopoulos’s statement that comedian Louis CK had waxed rhapsodically about wanting to fuck McGregor because of his “fucking” gorgeousness. “Wouldn’t it be funny,” McGregor asked, “if I met him somewhere, went up behind him and tapped him on the shoulder . . . just see how really serious he is about it?”

Gay committee regains full slate Davie Village decline is high priority Natasha Barsotti THE CITY OF VANCOUVER’S GAY ADVISORY COMMITTEE once again has a full slate of members, whose priority list now includes addressing concerns about the Davie Village’s decline, affordable housing, safety, youth issues and trans inclusion. The committee’s 12-member roster consists of Metha Brown, Adeline Huynh, Dean Malone, Myriam Dumont, Michael Kushnir, Richard Overgaard, Michelle Fortin, Mohammad Basir-Kazerooni, Patrick Tham and returning members Drew Dennis, Barb Snelgrove and Ron Stipp. Their terms expire in December 2014. Kushnir would like to see more attention paid to the community’s needs in East Vancouver. “One of the key things to look at is that there is a comparative advantage to doing queer events downtown, but they must fit into a certain framework, otherwise they won’t work,” says Kushnir, who co-produces the popular East Van party Spit. Kushnir also calls for a “long, frank, brutal community discussion” about the challenges facing the Davie Village. “Davie St is dying. Some might say it’s already dead, and largely speaking it’s because it’s de-gaying,” he says, pointing to the area’s ongoing gentrification. He remembers checking out the West End as a 19-year-old and finding the $800-per-month rent tag for a one-bedroom apartment exorbitant — a bargain these days, he observes. “The problem has gotten a lot worse, and it’s priced out a lot of younger queers that want to inject their energy into this neighbourhood,” he says. “What that leads to is a lack of community regeneration.” Fortin, treasurer of the Vancouver Dyke March, is also concerned about affordable housing. “There are some new youth-housing pieces on the line in the next few years, and I’d like to see more,” she says. “I’d also like some options that are not just apartments but some intentional group-living options for queer youth.” Huynh, a Gab youth worker, is particularly con—Michael Kushnir cerned about the safety of queer youth in schools. “I know that’s a provincial matter, but I think the city can be very influential in that as well, creating that whole provincewide anti-homophobia, anti-transphobia policy, which is gaining a lot of traction,” she says. “As a professional queer, I’ve been supporting our community a lot in terms of safe spaces and inclusivity and diversity issues, and I just wanted to take it to another level and be involved in a planning or policy-change capacity. That’s where a lot of change has to happen.” Huynh is also keen to be a voice for diversity on the committee. “That would be one of my top concerns and interests, so I will be bringing it to the table, and I would like to see an actual, real commitment to inclusion and diversity, not just tokenism. It’s not good enough to see some faces on a poster or some faces on a committee,” she says. “It’s important to see real systemic change, but exactly how that is going to happen during my time on committee, I don’t know, but I’m going to stay hopeful and see what happens.” Members also intend to push forward with the previous committee’s work on trans issues. Snelgrove, who’s returning for a second term, says a lot of what the committee worked on last time can be carried over into the new committee. “Plus with fresh eyes and ears, I’m quite sure in our first few meetings we will discover new things and new avenues that need to be addressed,” she says.

DAVIE ST IS DYING. SOME MIGHT SAY IT’S ALREADY DEAD, AND LARGELY SPEAKING IT’S BECAUSE IT’S DE-GAYING.

Pride Society president ousted New board of directors elected Shauna Lewis THE PRESIDENT OF THE VANCOUVER Pride Society (VPS) has been ousted and a new interim slate of directors elected to govern until the end of the year. An overwhelming majority of the nearly 100 members at the VPS’s special general meeting on March 11 voted to nullify January’s election results due to “voting irregularities.” Gone from the board is the narrowly reelected president, Ken Coolen. The new interim board members are Tim Richards, president; Chrissy Taylor, vice-president; Bernard Leclair, treasurer; Ray Lam, secretary; and directors-at-large Tim Kraumanis, Debbie Oon and Trevor Ashcroft. Rick Leonovich and Raigen D’Angelo, who denounced the dissolution motion, will remain on the board as well. Prior to the March 11 meeting, the VPS board had been reduced to four directors, below quorum, after Trevor Ashcroft resigned on Feb 9. Lam, who ran unsuccessfully for president at January’s annual general meeting (AGM), pushed for a new election in the wake of alleged voting irregularities involving individuals casting multiple votes. Coolen maintains he won his seat fairly in January. “On the final vote there were 40 ballots cast, and, of those, 21 were for myself and 19 were for Chrissy Taylor,” he told the membership. As for some members holding multiple votes, Coolen said notices were sent explaining the need for letters of authorization to represent an organization, but some voters were unaware of the new voting policy’s requirements. “The chair made the call and leniency was given,” he said. “There were allowances that were made, and that certainly was uncorrected,” agreed former VPS vice-president Shawn Ewing, who chaired January’s AGM. “I stand here today somewhat embarrassed,” she told the membership. “I tried my damnedest at the AGM to make sure that we followed all the policies and procedures and rules and bylaws and all those kinds of things. But the actual fact is that we didn’t. At the end of the day — when it was brought forward to me after the AGM that we had violated a bylaw in the Societies Act that states ‘one member, one vote’ — we had made a mistake.” Asked publicly by Lam at the special meeting, VPS staff member Sharon Nelson acknowledged that a mistake had been made at the AGM. Long-standing VPS member Laura McDiarmid supported the motion to over-

turn January’s election results. “I’ve seen our Pride grow and I’ve seen our Pride go through a number of problems, changes and challenges,” she said. “We need to have a board that is for the community and that works for our Pride Society for the future, and not for the immediate here and now.” “To me it makes sense that we focus on correcting the voting irregularities and that we make sure that we have strict rules that we adhere to going forward,” said VPS member Kelly Worral. “But I feel it’s a bit much to say, ‘We’ve always held the elections the wrong way and therefore this past one doesn’t count and we need to do it again.” Raigen D’Angelo thought the meeting was merely a ruse. “The main reason why this [SGM] is taking place is not about irregularities proposed at the AGM. The whole purpose of this exercise is to get rid of Ken Coolen,” she said. Despite opposition from a few members, the motion to nullify the January AGM election results passed. Ewing then proposed a second motion to accept a handpicked slate of interim board members. Monika Whitney, who was appointed by Coolen as a director in February to make quorum on a dwindling VPS board,

opposed the slate, requesting instead that each potential interim board member be individually considered. But her motion was overturned and the interim slate passed, with the stipulation that a new VPS election be held no later than Dec 15, 2012. The proposed slate was handpicked by the 39 requisitioners who supported Lam’s motion to dissolve the board elected in January. “It’s weird to say the other election wasn’t fair but then to put on a slate of people that were handpicked. I think it looks kind of shady,” Whitney later told Xtra. “I was questioning that myself,” McDiarmid says. “But this is an interim appointment. It is a trial run, and come the AGM we’ll see how that transpires.” McDiarmid says she’s relieved that the VPS can get back to business. Immediate priorities include ensuring this year’s Pride celebration is a success, revitalizing the VPS and reviewing its bylaws, and searching for a new general manager to replace outgoing manager Scott Blythe, says VPS president Tim Richards. “We need to really embrace the values of our society and ensure that we’re living those values so that we can move the organization forward,” he adds.

Former student sought apology from school Bullying has ‘lifelong impact’: Vancouver School Board chair Nathaniel Christopher WHEN GARY ALLEN WAS A TEENAGER he prayed that morning would never come so he wouldn’t have go to school. Allen was a student at Vancouver’s Killarney Secondary from 1979 to 1981 where, he says, he was bullied so badly the experience still haunts him to this day. “I used to walk the halls of that school daily in fear,” he tells Xtra from his home in Nanaimo. “When I look back on what I went through there, I don’t know how I made it through school because I used to skip school to escape bullies and forge my dad’s name on notes to be excused from school, until I got caught.” Allen, who describes himself as a shy and quiet type, says a group of boys guessed he was gay and called him homophobic names, physically assaulted him and threatened his life on several occasions. “Two of these bullies were in most

of my classes, so I never had any peace and always worried about what they were going to do to me,” he says. “As a result I could not concentrate on my school work and got poor grades, and I am not a stupid person.” Allen regrets that he never told any adult about the situation. “One time I was in the office to see the vice-principal and considered telling him, but the next person to be seated was one of the worst bullies,” he says. “When I saw him there I lost my nerve. I figured it’d come back on me through the bullies. I never told anybody about the bullying I went through; I completely kept it to myself. I didn’t even tell my father and his girlfriend because I didn’t want to put it on them and didn’t feel like they could deal with it.” On his final day at Killarney, a group of boys in art class hurled clay balls at him. Allen left high school and never went back. “Clay balls hurt. I might as well have

been stoned for the way it felt to me,” Allen says. “I had as much as I could take. I walked out of the classroom and I told them, ‘I’m never coming back,’ and I was crying and I’d never cried up to that point. I went home and my dad was having problems with his mental health and I was worried about him and all the bullying I went through, so I began not sleeping and I ended up in the mental hospital in Victoria because I had a mental breakdown.” Allen says the bullying left him with a panic disorder and hastened a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. “It turns out after a couple of years the psychiatrist diagnosed me with bipolar disorder,” he says. “He felt maybe I was predisposed to that, but it might not have come on if it wasn’t for all that bullying I went through.” Allen came forward with his story after seeing a CBC advertisement on Facebook asking if people were bullied in their youth. He also contacted the Vancouver School Board (VSB) and initially asked for an apology from his former school but later dropped that request. “I don’t care if they give me an apology or not,” he says now. “I want to get the story out for other people and make

teachers realize how bad bullying can be and what goes on right under their noses sometimes.” While the VSB did not offer Allen a formal apology, deputy superintendent Jordan Tinney offered Allen a personal apology in a telephone conversation on March 8. “I didn’t get the sense that

CLAY BALLS HURT. I MIGHT AS WELL HAVE BEEN STONED FOR THE WAY IT FELT TO ME.

—Gary Allen

that’s what he wanted,” Tinney says. “He seemed far more concerned that there were structures in place. He didn’t ask for an apology. I just offered it on a personal basis; that’s how it came about. It was a very difficult time. What I did say was that ‘I’m sorry that happened to you.’ And I am. But that’s me; I’m not the school board. I am sorry that happened

to him; he was clearly bullied.” Tinney also asked if there was anything he could do to assist Allen now. “One thing he said was to listen to his story, but he also wanted to know that there were more structures in place now than in 1979 or 1980. I told him about the policies. He seemed to be quite reassured that things were quite different. We not only have policies, but practices and structures. I also said I know bullying happens and that we’re not perfect, but we do all we can.” The VSB passed anti-homophobia policy in 2004 and now has a parttime anti-homophobia and diversity consultant to continue training staff, finding resources for schools and providing consultation on a regular basis for students, says VSB spokesperson Kurt Heinrich. Vancouver also developed the Focus on Bullying Prevention Program in 1998 for elementary schools, and helped develop a resource for high schools six years ago, Heinrich says. VSB chair Patti Bacchus says it’s critical to listen, welcome and respect the stories and advice of former students such as Allen. “It was very moving, actually remarkable and brave to come out at this point,” she says. “It speaks to how much of an impact bullying has on peoples’ lives long after the fact. We have some commentators say it is part of growing up, but we know it has a lifelong impact. “We certainly can’t turn back the clock,” Bacchus says, “but as trustees we can learn from the past and do things better and respectfully acknowledge the impact bullying has had in the past and ensure we do everything in our power to make sure students don’t experience that again.”

Natasha Barsotti AFTER ANNOUNCING ITS CANCELlation in February due in part to the protestations of a group of vocal Christian fundamentalists, organizers of the Fraser Valley Taboo Naughty But Nice Show say a “tremendous amount” of public support motivated them to reinstate this year’s event. “In this case, the other side of the community spoke out loud and clear and made it very clear to us through Facebook, Twitter, hundreds of emails, calls — that they definitely welcomed Canwest and the Taboo show into the community and that a small group didn’t speak for the entire community,” Sean Libin, marketing vice-president for Canwest Productions, told Xtra March 6. Former Abbotsford mayoral candidate Gerda Peachey, who led the protests, was particularly opposed to holding a “filthy sex show” in a publicly owned building. The show conflicts with biblical principles of sexuality, she says. Libin says Taboo supporters reject Peachey’s position. “They said, ‘Hey, we go to church on Sunday, too, but we also have sex on a Saturday night, and we’re not going to apologize for that.’” The show will now run from May 11 to 13.

COVER STORY

CANUCKS STARS HAVE A MESSAGE FOR GAY ATHLETES: Robin Perelle | Photography by Sergei Bachlakov

The National Hockey League, better known for its testosterone than a gay-friendly welcome mat, is being asked to adjust its attitude by one of the toughest general managers in the league. In honour of his late son Brendan, Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke has launched a campaign to curb homophobia and welcome gay players to the NHL. Xtra asked Vancouver Canucks stars Ryan Kesler and Henrik Sedin what they think of the You Can Play campaign.

HENRIK SEDIN POSITION: CENTRE NUMBER: 33 AGE: 31 BIRTHPLACE: ÖRNSKÖLDSVIK, SWEDEN DRAFTED BY VANCOUVER: 1999 THIS SEASON WITH CANUCKS: LEADING SCORER WITH 70 POINTS AWARDS: 2010 MOLSON CUP HART MEMORIAL TROPHY ART ROSS TROPHY FIRST TEAM ALL-STAR

IT’S NOT GOING TO CHANGE THE WAY WE SEE THEM OR THE WAY WE TREAT THEM.

XTRA: Henrik, what do you think of the new You Can Play campaign to welcome gay players to the NHL? HENRIK SEDIN: I think it’s great. It’s something we support. And for them to carry on the legacy of Brian [Burke’s] son, and Patrick’s brother, it’s a great way to do that and, like I said, we’re extremely supportive.

So why aren’t you participating in the ads? [smiles] They have yet to ask me. I’ve seen a few of them. They picked good players, big names, and I think it’s great. It’s one of those things where, to get big-name players being out there with their face and doing this, it’s great.

You’re a big name. If they ask you, will you do it? If they ask. I don’t think anyone that I know wouldn’t do it. To support the Burke family and Brian, who drafted us here, and it was a big part of our careers — it would be an honour, for sure.

Why do you think there are no openly gay players in the NHL right now?

SEA CHANGE BREWING?

Though the number of openly gay, non-retired, professional male athletes can still be counted on one hand, last year saw a record number come out. Is the sports world changing? — Robin Perelle

Tough to say. I mean it’s one of those things where in society it’s taken a long time for that to be acceptable. I think in a team sport like this — it’s not only hockey, it’s other team sports where it’s taking even longer — it’s too bad, but I’m sure over time there’s going to be guys coming out.

How friendly a place is the Canucks’ locker room for a gay player, do you think? I think it’s friendly. I can’t talk for all of us, but the guys I’ve talked to, and myself and my brother, it would be no problem at all. It’s not going to change the way we see them or the way we treat them. They’re one of us and they’re part of the team.

There are no openly gay Canucks at this moment that you know of, right? No, not that I know of.

If there were someone here hesitating to come out, what message would you want him to hear? I think the message is like the rest of society: they’re no different than any other people. It shouldn’t be any problem. But we know it is in the rest of society as it is in sports. But in here, it would not be a problem.

Do you support the line, “If you can play, you can play”? Absolutely, 100 percent. To have this message — it’s a powerful message — and to have the Burke family doing this, it’s great. And I’m hoping it’s going to help a lot of people.

RYAN KESLER POSITION: CENTRE NUMBER: 17 AGE: 27 BIRTHPLACE: LIVONIA, MI DRAFTED BY VANCOUVER: 2003 THIS SEASON WITH CANUCKS: 3RD IN POINTS WITH 47 AWARDS: 2011 SELKE TROPHY

XTRA: What do you think of the Burke family’s new You Can Play campaign to welcome gay players to the NHL? RYAN KESLER: I think it’s awesome. It’s a really strong message and I think it’s going to eliminate that stigma of gay athletes.

Why do you think that message is still necessary? A lot of us are closed-minded. Not all of us [and] not just in hockey, but in society. I think this opens up the idea, and I think it’s going to change things for the better.

You just did a spot for them, didn’t you? [smiles] Yeah.

Why? It’s a great cause. Brian Burke’s son was the first one to come out, and obviously, we know he passed away, and I think it’s a legacy to him. Burkie was my first-ever general manager and anything I can do to help him and help the cause — it’s for the better.

What were your lines? It was along the lines of ‘We need to basically stop homophobic bullying in the locker room. And if you can play, you can play’ — and that’s a strong message in itself.

MAY 2011 The National Basketball Association (NBA) creates a public service announcement called Think B4 You Speak, featuring players from the Phoenix Suns — Grant Hill and Jared Dudley — urging youth to stop using the word gay to mean dumb or stupid. “It’s not creative, it’s offensive to gay people, and you’re better than that,” they say.

If one of your teammates were to come out, how would you feel?

I would be definitely okay with it. I’m open-minded to that. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. If you’re okay with coming out and strong enough to come out — because we all know how people can be. It’s a very different world out there; people are very closedminded. It’s good to see that this campaign is going to open some people’s eyes.

How friendly a place do you think the Canucks’ locker room would be if someone came out? We’re a big family in here and I’m sure every single guy in here would be more than supportive and help them along the way.

So if there were a guy in here, one of your teammates, hesitating to come out, what message would you want him to hear? No message he has to hear. I think every guy in this room knows we’re a big family and knows we have each other’s back no matter what. He shouldn’t be timid to come out or anything.

WE’RE A BIG FAMILY IN HERE AND I’M SURE EVERY SINGLE GUY IN HERE WOULD BE MORE THAN SUPPORTIVE.

What do you think it will take to get an openly gay player in the NHL? I think this campaign that’s going on is going to help a lot. When Brendan Burke did that, he was the first-ever one to come out, and I think that gets the ball rolling. I think for some guys it’s a tough thing to do, but I don’t see anything wrong with it.

Because for the last 16 years I’ve been living a free life among my close friends and family, and I’ve hidden behind what is a gargantuan-size secret here in the sports world.”

Major League Baseball’s San Francisco Giants participate in Dan Savage’s It Gets Better project to support gay and lesbian youth. By the end of the season, seven more baseball teams produce videos for the campaign.

Former Vancouver Whitecap David Testo becomes the first professional soccer player to publicly come out in North America.

TIPPINGPOINT COVER STORY

Will the Burkes’ You Can Play campaign change hockey culture?

Leafs general manager Brian Burke has teamed up with his son Patrick to launch the You Can Play campaign in tribute to his younger son, Brendan, who died in a car accident a few months after he publicly came out.

Robin Perelle

F

with files from Andrea Houston

OUR YEARS AGO BRENDAN Burke, son of one of the toughest hockey managers in the National Hockey League (NHL), blazed a trail his dad never anticipated. He came out. The younger Burke was at the time, in his own way, following in his famous father’s footsteps, having recently entered the world of hockey management at Miami University in Ohio. His coach and teammates would accept his revelation and take it in stride. “I think having Brendan as part of our program has been a blessing,” coach Enrico Blasi told ESPN’s John Buccigross in Brendan’s 2009 coming-out story. Brendan’s gruff-and-tumble father was equally supportive. So was his older brother Patrick. “In so many ways, I look up to him for who he is and what he does,” Patrick Burke, now a scout for the Philadelphia Flyers, told Buccigross. “Obviously, there are gay players in hockey right now, just no openly gay ones. And there are gay people in management, whether they’re scouts or front-office people or coaches. We just don’t have any openly gay ones right now. “I think it will be a challenge for the first person that comes out, because they’ll be putting themselves under a microscope,” Patrick continued. “The scary thing for me is that it might be Brendan, if he chooses to go into [professional] hockey. I don’t think it’s fair the face of homosexuality in hockey should be a 20-year-old college kid, but Brendan is more than willing to be the guy, which awes me. I think it’s a matter of when, not if, players and management start coming out.” Before going into management, Bren-

STEVE PAYNE

dan was a goalie, and presumably a good one since he made the competitive varsity team as a senior. But he chose not to play. At the time, he made up some excuse, but he later revealed to Buccigross that he hung up his skates because he couldn’t take the locker-room atmosphere anymore. Homophobic slurs were as common as hockey tape, he said, and the pressure to be straight was increasingly intense. So he quit and went into management. Then he came out. Then he died. The car crash in Indiana on a snowy night in 2010 plunged the sports world, and the Burke family, into shocked mourning. “I can’t talk publicly about Brendan too much yet, but I’ll do the best I can,” Brian Burke tells Xtra, looking down. He says his son’s decision to come out took a lot of courage. “It’s not that I didn’t want him to

come out publicly. I just wanted to keep him safe. The pioneer is usually a lonely guy. He walks alone. I just hoped Brendan would be second or third or fourth. Obviously, I told him I’d support whatever he decided to do.” Before Brendan died, his father invited him to Toronto for Pride. Though they didn’t march in the parade, they watched together from the sidelines with thousands of other spectators. Last year, Brian Burke marched in the Toronto Pride parade. Now he’s taking his tribute to his son a step further. On March 5, he and his son Patrick launched their You Can Play campaign. “We’re now joined by hockey players around the world supporting my son Brendan’s simple message: ‘If you can play, you can play,’” Brian says in the campaign’s first ad. Before Brendan died, he told Buccigross that he believed an NHL player would face a unique set of challenges but

STRAIGHT ATHLETES HAVE BEEN CONDITIONED TO THINK THEY SHOULD NOT SUPPORT GAY RIGHTS. WE NEED TO GIVE THEM A MEANS TO SUPPORT GAY PLAYERS. —Brian Burke’s son Patrick

would generally be supported if he came out. He might face more verbal abuse from opposing fans, Brendan predicted, but the overwhelming sentiment would be, “If he can play hockey, who cares?” Now Brian and Patrick Burke have assembled 39 NHL stars, and counting, to repeat that simple invitation and welcome gay players into one of the most macho environments on the continent. “We are losing young athletes, some because we scare them off, some because they never get into sports in the first place because they assume that sports will never accept them,” Patrick tells Xtra. “It’s rapidly improving, but not fast enough.” “Over the years,” he notes, “straight athletes have been conditioned to think they should not support gay rights. We need to give them a means to support gay players. The vast majority of them do.” Patrick predicts the NHL will see its first openly gay player in the next two years. “We have hit the tipping point here. We are getting closer and closer to that moment.” Brian recalls a touching letter he recently received from a fellow hockey dad. In it the father described driving with his son, who suddenly asked him to pull the car over. The son took a deep breath and came out. “The father turned to his son and said, ‘If it’s good enough for Brian Burke, it’s good enough for me.’” Check out our video interviews with Brian Burke and the Canucks stars on xtra.ca. PRINCE GEORGE SCHOOL TRUSTEES have decided against adopting a standalone anti-homophobia policy similar to those adopted in 15 other British Columbia school districts. Instead, the Prince George school board plans to improve existing policies that deal with gay issues, according to chair Sharel Warrington. The board reviewed its policies around harassment, sexual orientation and bullying, and is committed to dealing with harassment on the basis of sexual orientation, Warrington says. “We need to deal with it in school through education.” Prince George District Teachers’ Association first vice-president Tina Cousins is disappointed with the board’s decision. “Our feeling is there’s an elephant in the room and it’s pink,” she says. “The stories should tell you that there’s more to this. There’s not enough support for these kids. They went back to a document that was written in 2003 and finally sent out to schools in 2006.

It was called ‘Safer Schools.’” The Safer Schools research project examined harassment and discrimination against gay youth in Prince George schools after an 18-yearold student killed himself in May 2002. Jamie Lazarre’s suicide note said he couldn’t take the harassment anymore. The report recommended that the school district educate the school and the community to increase awareness of the effects of language and increase the understanding of harassment policies. Cousins believes the current policies are inadequate to address the issues of homophobia and gay-positive education in schools. “We do not want you to just add to an existing policy for many reasons,” she told the board. “Existing policies are not sufficient. If they were, do you think we would have heard Travis Shaw’s story about bullets being taped to his locker? Would we have heard students telling us that they are repeatedly called names? Hearing that the GSA club is the only place that

the students feel safe is shameful. We need to do better than that for these students and staff members.” Susan Trabant runs the gay-straight alliance at Prince George Secondary School, where she teaches. She says

IF YOU ASK LGBT STUDENTS IF THEY FEEL SAFE AT SCHOOL, EVERY ONE OF THEM WILL SAY NO. —Susan Trabant, teacher

a stand-alone policy would serve an educational purpose of teaching administrators, students and teachers what is and isn’t acceptable and articulating the consequences for

any infractions. “If you ask LGBT students if they feel safe at school, every one of them will say no,” Trabant says. “They are not just beat up, but they constantly hear things like ‘You’re such a fag, homo’ or ‘That’s so gay.’ Who wants to be in an environment that’s poisoned by sayings like that all day long?” Warrington agrees and says the board has recommended that a greater emphasis be put on the education component. “At this point we’re developing a more progressive education piece,” she says. “Right now it’s being fleshed out, discussed through our administrators in our school. It’s an action that we are encouraging to continue.” Among the educational components anticipated, she cites activities in schools to teach the importance of treating others respectfully. Trabant says teachers and students will continue to advocate for a standalone policy. “It doesn’t mean we’re going to stop here,” she says. “We’re going to continue to pursue it. We’re not sure what the next step is going to be, but I’m sure students and parents do not want to let it end here.”

MEN’S HEALTH

CLOSETED IN COLLEGE

There’s blood Luckily, my roommate in my cum, doc wasn’t Ravi Ask the Expert Dr Pega Ren

Dear Dr Ren, I am 36 and have had half a dozen ejaculations where blood was present in my semen. The first time that this happened to me I was in university and I thought it was due to overuse. Years passed before it happened again. Now it has begun to happen more regularly, several months apart. There’s a lot of blood the first time, then just a little bit for a few times and then nothing for several months again. My doctors have found nothing worrisome. My PSA tests are normal. Still, this can’t be normal, can it? What tests should I be asking for? What can I do to stop or prevent this from happening? Thank you, Bloody Cum

Dear Bloody Cum, Hematospermia — blood in your ejaculate — is a fairly common condition, and generally quite benign, much like finding a bit of blood in your snot when you blow your nose. Alarming, but insignificant. If it’s happened to you once, it will likely occur again. Some men are simply prone to this. That said, I validate your concern and congratulate you for conferring with your physician. About half the time, we just don’t know why blood appears in someone’s cum. There can be, though, some causes we want to rule out. These are: ƀɠ (#!(ɠ),ɠ' &#!( (.ɠ./')/,-ɠ of the prostate, bladder, testes or seminal vesicles ƀɠ #( .#)(-ɠƘ#( &/ #(!Żɠ /.ɠ not limited to, chlamydia, herpes, trichomoniasis and cytomegalovirus) ƀɠ *,)-. .#.#-Żɠ *# # 3'#.#-ɠ or urethritis ƀɠ *)&3*-ɠ#(ɠ." ɠ/, .", ƀɠ $ /& .#)(Ɛ / .ɠ) -.,/ .#)(ƀɠ 3-.-Żɠ" '),," ! ɠ),ɠ abnormalities of the seminal vesicles They sound scary, but they’re easily diagnosed and treated. Commonly performed diagnostic tests are a urinalysis and cultures to identify any sexually transmitted or other infections. If indicated, an ultrasound or MRI may reveal tumours or other abnormalities. In some cases, a semen analysis may be ordered. You see, semen originates from multiple organs, including the testicles, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles and prostate. Most of the semen comes from the seminal vesicles and prostate, and it is probably from these two organs that most hematospermia originates. If doctors are being particularly thorough, or if any of your lab tests return as suspicious, treatment with antibiotics for a presumptive diag()-#-ɠ ) ɠ *,)-. .#.#-ɠ Ƙ#( & '' .#)(ɠ

of the prostate gland) is given, since some studies have shown that about a quarter of men with bloody semen have prostatitis. However, the benefit of this treatment is questionable, and over-prescription of antibiotics is problematic in itself. In most cases, if blood in the semen is not associated with any infection or other abnormality, no treatment is given, and the condition usually resolves on its own, as you have found in your case. ( ,ɠ()ɠ )( #.#)(-ɠƘ 2 *.ɠ#(ɠ." ɠ case of an STI) would your experiencing blood in your cum put your sexual partners at any risk. As to your question about what you can do to stop or prevent this from happening, you would need to know what was causing it to happen in the first place, and that is unlikely. Just relax. That’s the rather unsexy medical information about blood in your semen. Perhaps equally as relevant would be a discussion about the importance of your paying attention to the cues your body gives you about its rhythms and alerts. You tell me, for instance, that your first occurrence of bloody cum was when you were in university and quite sexually active. Now in your mid-30s, you note a more regular recurrence. Have you paid attention to your sexual cadence? Does this coincide with your taking new lovers? Or perhaps with an increase in solo sex? Your body doesn’t care how it comes, you know, but it does note frequency. If you happen to be someone whose body is sensitive to these “seminal bleeds,” you would be wise to monitor whether your ejaculatory frequency triggers them, not because you are necessarily causing yourself harm, but because it behooves us to know and understand how our bodies work. This becomes even truer as we age, when spotting change can alert us to potential problems. Early detection is the key to recovery. In fact, this sensitivity can serve as a reminder to you to monitor your naughty bits generally. Our reproductive organs comprise the only system not fully functioning at birth nor lasting till death. Prostates wear out before our medically extended life spans and therefore require a bit of extra pampering and monitoring. “Men of a certain age” need to be seeing their doctors annually for PSAs and digital exams to catch any early changes of the prostate gland. Check your balls regularly, too, for smoothness and roundness. I must say that your response to your situation is so completely ap*,)*,# . ɠƘ " %#(!ɠ1#."ɠ3)/,ɠ ) .),Żɠ writing for additional information) that I have no doubt you will approach upcoming health challenges with equal wisdom. At 36, you have decades ahead of you to experience all sorts of sexual adventures, and of course you will want to keep your body in its best physical condition to enjoy those experiences to their fullest. You set a good example.

Guest column Richard J Dalton Jr

I

T’S 1982, AND I AM A RESERVED, sensitive, gay 17-year-old boy starting college. My roommate, Jonathan Gewirtz, is a masculine ultimateFrisbee player. Jon is manly but not macho; sporty but not a jock. He definitely enjoys checking out the girls. “Straight” me goes along. In the dorm cafeteria, he’s checking out girls’ butts. He points out one girl with a wide, feminine butt. “What kind of butt do you like?” he asks. I point out my preference: a girl with, well, what turns out to be a dude’s type of bubble butt. He’s surprised at my choice; I wince. Did he catch on? Not a chance. So straight, he doesn’t imagine his roomie could be gay. He’s a great roommate; I’m an adequate pretender. No one torments me. I do a perfectly fine job of tormenting myself. I wallow in my loneliness, self-repression and envy, writing depressing poetry while my straight peers celebrate their sexual liberation. But in between the melancholy, I manage to enjoy some of the best years of my life. Thirty years later I am suddenly thrust back to that time in my life by a headline. It’s a news item about a hate crime: Tyler Clementi, a quiet, gay college student committed suicide in September 2010 after his intimate moments with a man were broadcast online by his Rutgers roommate, Dharun Ravi. Ravi was convicted on March 16 of bias intimidation, invasion of privacy and several counts of obstructing justice. Clementi, like me, was shy and gay. Ravi, like Jon, plays ultimate Frisbee. It’s a tenuous connection, but sometimes all it takes is one little strand to revive a difficult period hiding in the corner of one’s memory bank. My college roommate and I reconnected via Facebook several years ago. I told him I live in Vancouver now with my husband.

Richard J Dalton Jr, once a shy gay college boy too, sits in the freshman-year room he shared with his sporty roommate. COURTESY OF RICHARD J DALTON JR

“I had no idea you were gay!” he replied. “Glad you’ve come out and that you’re happy. Did you know you were gay at the time we were roommates? If so, you did a good job hiding it, or maybe I was just clueless.” “You weren’t clueless about me,” I wrote back. “I just did a pretty good job of being closeted at school.” “I didn’t make any dumb-ass gay jokes did I?” he asked. The question touches me; he’s concerned about his actions from three decades ago. “No, you never made any dumb-ass gay jokes,” I replied. Fast forward to March 16. I write Jon again, with a link to the story about Ravi’s conviction. “Look at this . . . A shy gay guy rooming with an ultimate-Frisbee player, but luckily you were a cool roommate.” His reply is frank. “I am still so curious about how I would have reacted if I had known,” he writes. “I would like to think that I would have reacted the same as I 1)/& ɠ()1ɠƘ().ɠ!#0 (ɠ ɠ-"#.ƙŻɠ /.ɠ ɠ1#&&ɠ never know.” I’m uplifted by an anecdote. He tells me how he was the captain of the Seattle Sockeye Ultimate Club in 1996 when a player gathered others after the game and came out. A few players asked Jon if he thought it was okay. “I told them I wouldn’t dignify the

question with an answer because to do so would imply that any ‘ruling’ was required,” he says. “Then I added, ‘All I care about is whether he is going to help us win games.’” “It was a total non-issue,” he says. “I am proud of that.” The same acceptance would be present at Furious George, a Vancouver ultimate-Frisbee team, if the team had gay players, says co-captain Marc Seraglia. If a player minded gay players, he’d be the problem, Seraglia says. But the guy in Seattle is the only one he knows who came out. Eventually there probably will be a gay player on Furious George, he predicts. Women’s ultimate Frisbee has many lesbians, including some on his wife’s team, he notes. “It’s more open.” Yet Seraglia is disappointed at some changes he’s seen in the sport. While ultimate Frisbee has long had a counter-culture mentality and a sense of acceptance, the game has gone more mainstream, attracting more jocks. He’s saddened by the incident committed by an ultimate-Frisbee player and wistful of the days when the sport was more accepting of diversity. I’m grateful that my masculine, sporty, ultimate-Frisbee-playing college roommate from three decades ago was a laid-back, accepting guy. But it saddens me to hear about Ravi being far, far worse than just a bad sport.

THEATRE

Doubt ? Room for

Learning to live with uncertainty Greg Armstrong-Morris

Is Father Flynn (played by Giovanni Mocibob, above) a predator or an innocent man defamed? Doubt lives in the space between truth and suspicion. EMILY COOPER

N HIS 2005 PULITZER-WINNING play, Doubt: A Parable, John Patrick Shanley offers a spare and searing investigation into truth and suspicion, and just how profoundly uncomfortable we are with everything in between. “When I read this script, long before I ever had the chance to see it, I knew it was essential Pacific Theatre material,” writes artistic director Ron Reed in his program notes. “I also knew it was one of the greatest scripts I had ever read.” Pacific Theatre’s goal — “to delight, provoke and stimulate dialogue by producing theatre that rigorously explores the spiritual aspects of human experience” — is fully realized in Shanley’s script. At its crux is a question of alleged sexual abuse in a Catholic elementary school in 1964. In 2012, however, sexual abuse in the Catholic Church is a foregone conclusion, isn’t it? It’s more apt to be the stuff of standup comedy than an award-winning script and screenplay. But at its core, Doubt probes the consequences of blind faith when such significant aspersions are cast. And much damage has been done in the name of blind faith. We’ve seen the hateful placards, printed with unwavering conviction, proclaiming

“God hates fags.” And we’ve watched the angry faces — apoplectic with certitude — accuse us of being, at best, immoral and, at worst, nothing less than predatory. In a 2005 PBS interview, Shanley explained, “I was very interested in having a powerful character chasing down a course of action that was going to do a lot of harm if she was wrong.” Sister Aloysius, the fear-inducing principal of St Nicholas School, is that powerful character. And what she’s chasing is her certainty that the parish priest, Father Flynn, has initiated an inappropriate relationship with a troubled altar boy. The harm she may cause is far-reaching and includes not only the priest’s destruction, but also her own removal from the Order, as well as the boy’s expulsion, tantamount to ending his education entirely. In a captivatingly restrained performance by Erla Faye Forsyth, we see the depth of Sister Aloysius’s humanity as well as the flame that ignites her unwavering commitment. “There’s a very strong spiritual aspect — mystical almost — that’s come into it,” says Forsythe. “I don’t think it’s just her seeing it. I think she believes God told her. And that’s what she has to hold on to.” Early in the script, our sympathies are

not with Sister Aloysius. Her initial recriminations against Father Flynn echo McCarthyism. But the priest’s equivocal response to her charge smacks of deflection, and the certainty of our sympathies shifts. “From one paragraph to the next I would think, ‘He is a terrible man and she’s a hero to protect these children,’” says Reed, describing his first impression of the script. “Then a moment later I would think, ‘No, he’s falsely accused, his life’s being ripped away from him, and she’s on a witch hunt.’ I found that so invigorating, so thrilling. That’s the experience I’m in charge of giving the audience. Not that they never know, but from moment to moment it changes.” This is Shanley’s genius — leaving us unsteady on our pins and unsettled in our resolution, arguing that doubt is not only the most humane condition, but also the most sacred. In the preface to the published script he writes, “You may come out of my play uncertain. You may want to be sure. Look down at that feeling. We’ve got to learn to live with a full measure of uncertainty. There is no last word. That’s the silence under the chatter of our time.”

YOU MAY COME OUT OF MY PLAY UNCERTAIN. YOU MAY WANT TO BE SURE. LOOK DOWN AT THAT FEELING. —John Patrick Shanley

COMMUNITY

Fundraiser for sexworker literacy ends ThrilLiterate was a ‘win-win situation,’ says Amber Dawn Shauna Lewis AN ANNUAL FUNDRAISER FOR SEXtrade workers in Vancouver has come to an end after five years of showcasing some of the gay community’s most acclaimed writers. ThrilLiterate creator and host Amber Dawn says she’s happy to have brought together local queer talent but had to retire the fundraiser for “self-preservation.” The full-time programming director of Vancouver’s Queer Film Festival says her increasing workload, as well as plans to write a second novel and the recent addition of a part-time teaching position, are time consuming. “I feel like I’m burning the candle at both ends,” she says. Amber Dawn says she started thrilLiterate out of a passion for written expression and a desire to empower sex-trade workers. A former sex-trade worker herself, she says programs like the literacy and learning program at WISH, a drop-in centre for female

street workers in the Downtown Eastside, help provide a platform for people finding their voice. “A voice is something a person holds within them even if they’re homeless,” Amber Dawn says. “WISH has demonstrated success in their literacy and learning program,” she adds. “It just feels good to support learning and literature. It’s a huge part of our human experience.” WISH’s literacy and learning program offers women computer and math skills, creative-writing training and the chance to tell their stories. ThrilLiterate’s end means a “significant” funding cut to the program, admits WISH executive director Kate Gibson, adding how grateful she is for the support she’s received over the last five years. “It’s important to focus on the gratitude we have for Amber Dawn and the work she has done for us,” Gibson says. “Just the fact that there is someone in the community doing that good work for WISH is really appreciated.”

Gay in the ‘Burbs’?

WISH is a registered non-profit organization operated by women that offers female survival sex workers a variety of services, including showers, meals, hygiene items, healthcare and shelter. One hundred percent of the money raised by thrilLiterate was donated to WISH’s literacy program. Gibson says the drop-in centre helps an estimated 100 women nightly, with approximately 20 clients using the literacy resources. Gibson says donations from thrilLiterate have tripled over the past five years. This year the event raised $1,300. The finale, a two-night event that took place Feb 24 and 25 at Rhizome Café, showcased more than a dozen local gay writers, including former Xtra contributor Tony Correia. “It was kind of a love-in. It was very touchy-feely,” Correia says. “Everyone was happy to be there and sad to see it end.” At its inception in 2007, thrilLiterate initially attracted only lesbian writers and readers, but it later opened up to all participants. “Amber Dawn really gave a lot of writers the chance to have their voices heard,” Correia says. “[ThrilLiterate] is going to be greatly missed.” Rhizome co-owner Vinetta Lenavat says she was honoured to host the final

fundraiser. “It was definitely bittersweet. Amber Dawn has always been really supportive of us, and it was a really good match for thrilLiterate to be at Rhizome,” she says. Lenavat says the café was filled to capacity both nights of the event.

“It was kind of a win-win situation,” Amber Dawn concludes. “Not only could I contribute to Wish, but there are outstanding queer and ally writers in Vancouver, and there are not enough venues or audience in the community.”

Fetish fiends & hot-mess queens Blitz & Shitz Raziel

I

NEEDED ONE MORE BINGE BEFORE heading to rehab, so I opted for the grotesque delirium of Bloody Betty’s Fetish Show. I couldn’t stay long (rehab curfew is so demeaning), but I definitely got my fix. Within the first 20 minutes I had submerged into a seedy underworld filled with anarchic glamour and explicit performance art. The show started with a drinking game that involved shooting tampons into a giant vagina. The clit was as big as my head! (Don’t get too excited: I’m talking about the one above my shoulders). Whether they managed to insert the tampon or not, the temperamental cunt squirted blood straight into the contestants’ faces. The performances ranged from a Budapest dancer to bestiality (Pony Boy lives up to his name) to a sordid schoolgirl burlesque routine. When they stripped to their tasselled pasties and dropped their kilts, they were all wearing strap-ons, except one, who had an image of a pussycat over her underwear. Inevitably, a rape scene ensued, with the Jizabel getting tears in her pigtails as the

strap-ons ejaculated one by one all over her face. She mocked protest but in the end couldn’t resist licking her middle finger clean after seductively swiping it across her gooey cheek. So if you see a group of schoolgirls in a dark Eastside alley at night, run for your life! Unless you’re into that kind of thing. In which case, see you there.

The To-Do List EATING OUT I’m refraining from cracking oral-sex jokes . . . Too easy! On March 29, more than 230 restaurants in BC will be donating 25 percent of their profits to HIV/AIDS charities A Loving Spoonful and Friends for Life. Since 1991, this event has raised more than $3 million. Check out diningoutforlife.ca for more info.

They tried to make me go to rehab And I said, “Only if you put me on the guest list and feed me syringe shots.” Junkie Junction (oh my gaw, you have no idea how long I’ve been holding that one in) might not be as elite as Cirque Lodge, but its treatment program has a 100 percent success rate of getting you entirely fucked up. The meds were Hollywood-themed drinks, group therapy was with messy queens, and after heart palpitations induced on the dancefloor, there was an oxygen bar to help you recuperate. Party promoter and host Scotty Mackay dressed as a doctor for all our OD emergencies and was passing out bottles of pills faster than Dr Conrad Murray. I opted to get a second opinion once I discovered they were filled with candy . . . OUTrageous: Hollywood Rehab breathed some much-needed life into Davie Village. for mug shots (oh, how did I know this day would come?). For the relapse: have fewer queens, strippers in orange jump suits, and a Britney impersonator strapped to a gurney for décor. She should be wearing a lopsided pink wig and mumbling to herself in a faux English accent/spontaneously singing “Lucky.” That is the cray cray Brit Brit we all know, love and miss!

PS Coronation 41 had all the divas waxing their pits and tucking their dicks. I’m too blond to keep up with the titles, but I’d like to give a special nod to Victor Bearpark, who received one of the most meaningful awards from the Dogwood Monarchist Society: Citizen of the Year. Victor is a devoted photographer to the bar stars and does it simply out of love!

They’re big kids now! Come celebrate March 31 at The Cobalt. Their Facebook page says, “Four years ago, when earlier eras of thriving drag king culture seemed long gone, a group of friends came together with a crazy idea to reignite the spirit of drag in this beautiful city by creating a space where both fresh and experienced talents alike could showcase an art form integral to the very social, political and historic fabric of our community.”

FOR REALZ The Real Housewives of Vancouver is premiering April 4 with a twohour episode. Why not watch it on the Oasis screens with a bunch of squealing fags? Botoxxx time: 8–10pm. $3 pints and buy-one-getone-free appetizers!

Firstly, you want to make sure you find someone who has extensive knowledge of the area and the market in general. All communities have unique issues to consider, and a local, knowledgeable realtor will be your best bet. You’ll be working closely with your real estate agent, so it’s important to choose someone who understands your situation, knows the local real estate market, and can give you the advice and guidance you need. Still, how to ensure you find the right one? You can do plenty of research on your own, but the best way to receive the service you deserve is by contacting your current realtor. As realtors, we have a broad network of agents we do business with all across the country, people that we trust. Asking your current realtor for help in searching for an out-of-town realtor is part of our job — a sale or purchase with my client does not end when the sale is completed. Clients call me years after I’ve initially helped them, very often asking who I would recommend in another part of BC or Canada.

Helpful Hints Choosing a Gay-Friendly Realtor There are countless ways to find a realtor you can trust and with whom you can be comfortable. Here are some quick and easy ways: q Check out the latest edition of Xtra’s Real Estate section to find reputable agents and peruse their current listings. q Ask your friends and family! Perhaps they have a realtor they could recommend. q When cruising through prospective neighborhoods, take down the names and numbers of realtors on the For Sale signs. q Stop by open houses so you can meet your potential realtor faceto-face. Try to meet with two or three before making your final decision. You should choose a realtor who you think would be your best “business” partner.

The Stuffington Post Graeme Gerrard

ROM THE COVER OF RAGING STALLION Studios’ newest release, Cockwork, it’s clear that director Tony DiMarco has created an homage — though barely — to Stanley Kubrick’s classic film A Clockwork Orange. The film begins in an off-white bedroom, with off-white furniture and off-white bedding. In fact, the only objects with pigment are performers Alexander Garrett, the mysteriously named DO and an object on the coffee table that could be considered either bowling pin or club. It turns out later to function as an impromptu dildo. DO and Garrett are each wearing men’s dress shoes, orange jockstraps and black bowler hats while they fuck with aggression. It’s not the fevered aggression of a young couple’s first time nor the rough makeup sex that follows an early-morning spat, but DO and Garrett fuck like they’re trying to prove a point. DO controls their interaction and has one of the most amazing asses I’ve ever seen. It’s big, smooth and muscular. In fact, it’s so round that scientists could use it to calibrate their circle-drawing devices. The second scene features B-minus Cavin Knight and fit Jesse Santana, sporting a thick, stainless-steel Prince Albert. (PAs worry

me, only because the sensation of biting tinfoil sends shivers up my spine.) Again the scene is aggressive, with cursing and spitting throughout. And again the guys wear bowler hats and orange jocks. Santana’s ribs are like perfectly spaced xylophone keys. Later still, the offwhite room brings together two scruffy, though maintained, guys — Tom Wolfe and Heath Jordan. The bearded pair wear the customary bowlers, shoes and socks, and within a moment Wolfe throws Jordan down to the ground and rolls him into a small package of vulnerability. Jordan has a sweet little face that seems to be saying both “Why are you doing this to me?” and “Don’t stop doing this to me.” Director DiMarco claims he implored his cast to “inject extreme vitality into their performances and they delivered on every level.” I’m not sure what extreme vitality is, but it seems to make people really horny. Where would one find a bowler hat?

In Cockwork, a seeming homage to Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange, Jesse Santana does a fashion-plate turn to complement his pitch-perfect abs. RAGING STALLION STUDIOS
