The Community Library of Sentul East Sentul had been serving the country over the past centuries in railway construction and it had once be the headquarter of the KTM bhd. However, the site had gradually being replaced by the new development by YTL. To preserve the old characters of the street and integrate with the contemperory architecture. This is a place reminding the past for the young and equiped for the future changes for the old. This is where the exchange of experience and knowledge will located.

Located at the turning corner of Jalan Haji Salleh, the site is hardly visible from the street. Less communication among the community and street architecture had made the street to become less happening. The idea of the community library is to rejuvenate the dead street to a lively and well communicated neighbourhood.

Due to the historical background of the site Sentul, the idea of preserve the old and welcoming the new element is done via the design intergration of the facade. Wire meshed metal fabric and the transparent glass facade is applied as a overal material. the wire mesh is then applied with the growing vines, create a lively scene among the dead concrete street pattern.

The community library serves as the basis to fill up

the gap between the old and new community who both favours the taste of knowledge. By exchange both of their knowledge of life via activities, books, gadgets, workshop, the gap will soon to be lessen up.

CENTER OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP of Exconvicts A city is not judged by the glamourous decoration in the building facade but the human value within the building. Ex-convicts as the weak group in the society striving hard for their existence within the community. Therefore, locating in Putrajaya, the hearth of Malaysia Governmental center, here’s a center for them to rebuild their lives, a Center of Entrepreneurship. For the city, to express the humanity side of the society and reduce the city image. The center focus on recycling business, aligning with Putrajaya vision 2020 of becoming green city. The ex-convicts will undergo series of training in household making and transform the trashes to treasure just like what they did for their lives.

Putrajaya well known for its advanced and high technology based architecture which have distinctive appearance out of the norm. The newly developed capital had provided a vast land for development. Therefore, the architcture at Putrajaya are found in massive size. The style applied to the place are a mixture of contemporary and islamic architecture. Each of the buildings designed creaticly but appeared to be a messy monstrosity. The boulevard concept is introduced to the street whereby provide a proper space for people to relax. However, the hot weather of Malaysia had led this idea to be less ideable and hardly find people using the boulevard. The huge scale of the place had led to less communication between the community. Glassy windows are covered up to avoid the direct sun. Visual communication vanished as people are unaware of the street happenings. As compare to the massive architecture, the vegetation along the street are inssuficient for shading. People hardly hang out along the street except for evening. Youngsters community are lacking in this place as most of them are government workers and the family. Lack of interesting retails also contribute to the issue.

16 Putrajaya, Malaysia |

Therefore, the design direction of this center are focusing on the traditional way of Malay House design which tie the modern city capital back to the root. Remind people of the original ‘kampung’ style before the Putrajaya was built. The inspiration of open verandah are inplementing in the design of each room. Every rooms appears to be an open ‘verandah’ and closed up with a sliding louvered door. This enhance the visual contact in a more environmental friendly way by reducing the amount of glass. The triangular form are created based on the purpose of soothing the huge contrast with the neighbours which is the 35meter high gigantic Palace of Justice. The high end of the roof is then soothed to the lower end where an empty land beside is located. The size of the rooms varied from private to public. Where public spaces like carpentary workshops, cafe and art retails street are located. Semi private space like the library and digital room. Private spaces like the dormitory and facilities. The purpose of the building proposed a healthy relationship between the local community and the ex-convicts via the exchanging of arts knowledge. At the same time enhancing the awareness of recycling. Recycles of lives, a second chance to shine.

THE PEACE PAVILLION “A BREATH AWAY of Paris Champ de Mars Breathing occurs naturally and subconsciously, it constantly reminds us of our beautiful existence on this land. When the world torn apart, we are separated, one breath away from our loved ones. We blames, deny, anger, grief and ran away. Still, most of us do not realize the Peace has been taken for granted all this while. We dwell in our comfort zones and turning a deaf ear to the tragedy which happened miles away. Unappreciative until one rips it all off. Just like breathing, is it not a thin thread defining our mortalities? Yet, it is valued as transparent as it seems.

THE METAL PLATFORM As one steps on the metal platform, noises of thudding footsteps echoes in the atmosphere bring back the memories of chaos on 13 September 2015. Amidst the anger and fear, it is the absence of inner peace that we should realize of. We strive therefore to create a pavillion for acceptance of loss and healing of souls, a sacred place to rethink the existence of human beings. THE BREATHING FABRICS Shafts of light as a virtue of hope, beams through the rhythimic openings on the breathing fabrics, bath the ground with blessings. Inside the dome that depicts the curve of earth, one observes it slowly dims away before the next beam shone in again. The light mimics the rate of human long deep breathing, inviting visitors to peacefulness and contemplation.

THE WALL The wall acts as a monument for those who have sacrificed, stretches across half of the circle and draws the viewers attention to the middle. 130 luminaires are fixed on the panel in honour of those who protect the people and the pride of Paris, symbolized by the reflective mirror on the other side of the wall. The arms of the wall eventually embrace two chairs, invitting conversations and controversies in hope to achieve the same state of mind. “A breath away brings to the visitors a twofold meanings: far and near. Under the same fabrics, we are none religious nor political ties, neither races, gender or age difference. Together we breathe the same air, why cannot we come out and stop the menace of terror and promote peace?

THE PIT STOPS ETERNAL SUNSHINE of a spotless mind “To me, buildings can have a beautiful silence that I associate with attributes such as composure, self-evidence, durability, presence, and integrity, and with warmth and sensuousness as well; a building that is being itself, being a building, not representing anything, just being. -Quoted by Peter Zumthor, in his book of Thinking Architecture,2nd Edition,2006 Architecture has to have a physical relationship with life. It does not primary act as either a message or a symbol, but as an envelope for background of life. It can just be the rhythms of footsteps on the floor, echoes of people chatting, that being performed in the silence of emptiness, the pit stop.

DESIGN STATEMENT Stretching along the vast land of Russia, Tran-Siberian railway, had richly embraced the myriad fusion of tradition and culture across the nation. Symbols of cultural identities had flooded the nation over the centuries, but yet how many persons truly understand them? It’s the real things behind that people never get to see. There’s the sky, the earth, the sun, the landcape, that honestly defining a sensuosness to a city. Rather than creating another distinctive white elephant, our approach to the pit stop design is about emptiness, openness and honesty. It acts as a clean slate, a perceptual vacuum, leaving people in an empty state, perception is thus calm and dulled. A memory may surface, from each individual’s remembrance of past history. Thus form their own story about the city they visited. It does not house the history but it creates. TECTONIC The pit stop is an open structure with two significant openings. The narrow slit openings appear to sight from the railway track, creating a mysterious veil to the city, prompting the urge for exploration. Whereas the other end houses the wide horizon extending to the infinite view of landscape, as an embracement for the coming backs, and leading them to the next exploration. A working office, bathroom and storage is housed at both ends of the rhombus plan, leaving the middle plan with an empty slate. Soil, which carries the memory of the site, witnessed every significant events that happened to the land. By applying it to our pit stop material, somehow bring the most honest identity to the local city. It acts as a low-cost insulating material that regulates heat and cold in a cheaper and efficient way. Different pit stops along the Tran-Siberian railway, would use different clay type responding to the local availability.

processing and affordable at the same time.

CONSTRUCTION JOINTS Taken reference from the innovation of bamboo bicycle projects, joints of the structure are made of hemp fibre reinforced epoxy which is strong, durable and lighter than steel joinst. It is a strong multi-directional composite that is very sustainable as if require little

SKELETAL STRUCTURE The trapezium portal frame is also erected on the floating aquaponic ponds and made into cascading agricultural area. The vegetation is manually watered using the water from the lake at the same time naturally filtering the water before dripping into the aquaponics pond underneath. AQUAPONIC POND Aquaponics is the cheapest and greenest method to remove contamination and excess nutrients from the water. The close loop

ecosystem also allows fish hatchery and nursery to take place, the sustainbale fishing practices will lessen the pressure on the lake’s natural ecosystem. The waste of fish will also return absorbed by the aquatic plants completing the cycle. STORAGE SPACE The decks are elevated from the ground allowing storage for medical goods or other belongings to be kept away from sight. The idea also allows the area to be fully utilized without any obstruction in the building.

SPA-ART Blue Clay Spa House (Poetry is frosted fire) “To the Latvian the dainas(poetries) are more than a literary tradition. They are the very embodiment of his cultural heritage, left by forefathers whom history had denied other, more tangible forms of expression. These songs thus form the very core of the Latvian identity. -Former president of Latvia and scholar Mrs. Vaira Vike-Freiberga

DAINAS

ECOTHERAPHY

Dainas are the poetries and folklores that shape and epitomize the essence of Latvian identity. They are the main mode of transmission of Latvian culture and one of the milestone in identity building. It is necessary to understand the connection that Latvians maintain with nature, their hisotry and their identity in order to revel in the true substance of these quatrains.

Our design strives to elevate the idea of a traditional bath house and create a therapeutic facility that tends to both physical as well as the mind of the users.

Part of our formal inspiration stems from a Latvian poem titled “The Burning Coal” by Aspazijia which is very reflects on the tradtion, literature and symbolism of this nation in upholding its culture. By using the process of burning coal, the poet metaphorically painted the journey of how one’s passion are spread across. Within these five stanzas, he created a series of poetics that constitutes the spaces in the spa house.

Ecotheraphy is based on the idea that people are connected to and impacted by the natural environment. In nature, our minds process a lof less information than normal, and they don’t wear themselves out by concentrating. To achieve that in this nature surround site, we began to question the orthodox approach for an enclosed space. Vertical walls became the main design style, with walls arranged in a manner to eliminate enclosed corners. The effect is a humble building that allows the pristine nature of Latvia to seep into the spaces. The layout of the internal space is a carefully planned path of circulation which leads users to

certain predetermined points but lets them to explore others areas for themselves. The perspective is always controlled to ensure or deinies a view. THERMAL EXPERIENCE Thermal experience is based on a relaxing cycle alternating hot and cold. The vertical walls poised over the water feature wraps around the building subtly creating a visual and physical guidance. The design takes full advantage of Latvia’s poetic setting and natural light allowing interplay witht he environment-be it the changing hues and reflections of the water, or varying tones of light and shadow, the building manifests a multitude of changing emotions. The building elegantly conveys a quiet beauty when the concrete and substantials comes in contact with the fluid and ethereal.

Entrance Separated by concrete sheer walls, the entrance splits the visitors into solitary paths. These paths differ from one another with varying heights of walls as well as stairs to exude a strong sense of desolation.

Our whole soul Full of intentions Full of fresh Springful new notions!

How we ran then, How we went them: The streets paving Burned under our feet.

Nightly belows our heads Coals were burning Red glowing embers Covered even our dreams.

Burning coals Affected our fingers All we touched Turned to sparklings.
