WELCOME TO THE ILKLEY CARNIVAL 2016 Welcome to the 2016 Ilkley Carnival and our theme of ‘Best of British’. Today we say ‘goodbye’ and ‘hello again’ to some great supporters of Ilkley Carnival. The Carnival Committee will be saying goodbye to Liz Tennant who is stepping down after 15 years of dedication to Ilkley Carnival. Liz is the longest serving member of the Carnival Committee and amongst other duties has overseen the organisation of the parade, which is seen by many as the highlight of the day. Under Liz’s supervision the parade has grown in size and stature and is now recognised as one of the premier processions of its type in the region. Thank you for all you have done for Ilkley Carnival Liz, you will be missed greatly. We also renew acquaintances with Sue Sanderson and Brian Southgate who were great supporters of Ilkley Carnival in their previous roles with the police force in Ilkley, even attending when supposedly off duty. We welcome them back as VIP’s this year and hope they have a lovely day with their families. Ilkley Carnival is an event by the community for the community and so I am delighted that this year we will be supporting many local good causes, including the three chosen to be main beneficiaries – Ilkley Cricket Club, Ilkley Christchurch Scout Group and Aware (Airedale & Wharfedale Autism Resource). These are three great causes, each providing different benefits to our community. Ilkley Carnival receives no public funding and so to cover the costs of the event we rely greatly on the admission money and sponsorship from many local businesses. I thank all that have supported us this year, in particular our main sponsor Kashmiri Aroma, Stray FM, Linley & Simpson, The Black Hat, Westville House School, Spooner and Ilkley Connect. I’m delighted that for the third year running Marshalls funfair provided an afternoon of free entertainment for families from the LS29 support group and Aware on the day before the Carnival. This is a wonderful gesture that allows some children to enjoy the event, many of whom would find Carnival day itself too much to cope with. This gesture from Darran and all of the fair operators epitomises the community spirit of the event. We have had great support from many local groups who have supplied over 100 helpers to the event this year. There are too many to name here but the Carnival Committee are grateful to every group, organisation and individual who has assisted, as without this community help there would be no Carnival. The Carnival Committee continue to try and improve the event and provide as much ‘free’ entertainment as we can. We have a fantastic headline act in the main arena this year and a spectacular show is planned by The Knights of the Damned jousting display team. In addition we see the return of favourites such as Chester Mazing, Professor Robanti’s Punch & Judy, the dog show, children’s craft tent, Ilkley Rocks, Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Ryan Stocks excellent falconry display. This year we also see the return of a Classic Car Show and the Black Hats v White Hats cricket match, which is steeped in the history of Ilkley Carnival. There is so much ‘free’ entertainment today that there really is something for everyone so please enjoy the day.

AIR AMBULANCE
The Yorkshire Air Ambulance is an independent charity providing a lifesaving rapid response emergency service to 5 million people across Yorkshire. We fly 7 days a week, 365 days a year, covering a vast landscape that not only includes major cities and motorways, but also rural and isolated locations.
YAA is an independent Charity needing to raise £12,000 per day to keep both of Yorkshire’s air ambulances in the air and maintained. This is equivalent to £4.4 million each year.
We operate 2 helicopters, G-SASH and G-CEMS. They operate from Nostell Priory, near Wakefield and RAF Topcliffe, near Thirsk. The service is operational 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
We currently fly over 1,000 missions a year, an average of 3 incidents every single day. Patients are transferred to the nearest major trauma centre, flying at speeds of up to 160 mph.
If every adult in Yorkshire donated just £1 per annum, this would cover the yearly cost of keeping the air ambulances maintained and in the air. To find out how you can donate to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, please visit www.yaa.org.uk
CREATIVE COMPETITION WINNER An inspired “Best of British” themed picture scooped first prize in our competition to create the cover of the Ilkley Carnival programme. Eleanor Tolch (8) from All Saints Primary School, was the committee’s chosen overall winner of the competition following an impressive collection of entries from local schools including Ghyll Royd, Moorfield, Ashlands Primary and All Saints Primary.
Runners up in the competition were Sienna Sewell (5) from Ghyll Royd School, Helena Coy (9) from All Saints Primary, and Emmanuelle Dautret from Ashlands Primary.

Eleanor said: “My idea of what is the “Best of British” included the Queen, cricket, and Yorkshire puddings which is why I thought they’d look really good on the cover of the carnival programme. It’s really exciting to think so many people will see what I created!”
Keri Parker, Assistant Retail Manager at competition sponsor Bettys Café Tea Rooms, said: “The level of creativity in this year’s competition really impressed the judging panel. Best of British has really captured the imaginations of the children this year.”

Eleanor, Sienna, Helena and Emmanuelle will have their winning artwork framed by the Weaverbird Workshop in Ilkley and will receive Bettys goodie bags and certificates on the carnival presentation stage.

BENEFICIARIES The Carnival Committee has worked tirelessly to provide another fabulous event, packed with entertainment and attractions and a great way for us to be able to raise much needed funds for local groups and organisations. Last year we were able to donate £12,000 between our main beneficiaries and volunteer groups, without whose help we couldn’t even begin to consider putting on this increasingly popular family fun day event. Ensuring that as many as possible benefit from the proceeds of this year’s Carnival and after the selection process held earlier this year, the Committee decided that 'Aware' (Airedale and Wharfedale Autism Resource), Ilkley Christchurch Scouts and Ilkley Cricket Club should be this year’s primary beneficiaries. Ilkley Christchurch Scout Group is the first new scout group to open in the Bradford district in the last 10 years. With demand for scouting exceptionally high in Wharfedale, the new group was launched in May 2014 by a team of volunteers and parent supporters. Although the pack has gone from strength to strength, the group is in real need of funding for camp equipment to enable the cubs to take part in more adventurous outdoor activities. ‘AWARE’ is a parent-run group supporting families with children on the autistic spectrum by offering information, advice and opportunities to share experiences and learn from each other. With almost 300 members and 34 volunteers, the group provides play and leisure opportunities to children and young people with autism including youth clubs, play schemes, trips during school holidays and residential holidays. Ilkley Cricket Club suffered devastating damage in the Boxing Day floods and Chairman Brian Wheeler told the Carnival Committee how funds are needed to defend the entrances to the club to protect it in years to come. Remaining profits from the event are divided between other volunteering organisations who support us in the run up to and on Carnival day. If you think you could offer your time, energy, ideas, skills and/or just enthusiasm towards making next year’s Carnival the best yet, please contact me: Mari Hunt, Ilkley Carnival Secretary at carnisec@gmail.com or call Andrew Stacey, Chairman on 07951 890836. You will be welcomed with open arms and be part of a close team working towards providing profits to share between worthwhile causes and a great annual event for the community of Ilkley. Best wishes to all… and have a great day out with us!!! Mari Hunt, Ilkley Carnival Secretary
BLACK HATS versus
VICTORIAN CRICKET – WITHOUT RULES The most fun you’ll have with your hat on
If you have come expecting to see a serious game of cricket, this is not the place for you. Ilkley businesses got together over 100 years ago for a light hearted fund raising cricket match which has today evolved into the Ilkley Carnival…but without the cricket. The Black Hats versus White Hats encounter was played every May Day Bank Holiday Monday from 1880 until the Second World War, and then sporadically until the final match in 1994, something Colin Watson, of Ilkley Carnival’s volunteer committee, is keen to change by making it an annual tradition once again. A huge thanks to Stewart Taylor, owner and managing director of The Black Hat Pub for sponsoring this historic match. Also thanks to Ian Briggs from Dacres, for supplying the original 1890 Black Hats vs White Hats trophy and to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance crew for making a guest appearance to get the game off to a flying start. The match will be held at Ilkley Cricket Club on the afternoon of May 2nd, with teams led by Stewart Taylor and Mike Sansbury of The Grove Bookshop and member of the Ilkley Over Optimists cricket team.

WHITE HATS WHERE ILKLEY CARNIVAL STARTED The early history of the match We are indebted to the late Fred Cobley who not only recorded the events of the first few years of this unique cricketing fixture, but also noted the highlights of the after dinner speeches which marked the end of each annual match. It would appear, according to Mr. Cobley, that in the late 1870's the Ilkley Cricket Club was, financially, very nearly on its knees. It was decided, therefore, in 1880 to hold a novelty match to coincide with the Ilkley Feast, to raise funds. By 1882 the teams were wearing their distinctive black and white top hats or "tiles". In 1892 the superb cup, which still exists, was purchased by public subscription for annual competition. The carnival connected to the Black Hats White Hats in 1885 when a fancy dress parade was held through the town and is now one of the main attractions of the modern day carnival. So now another series can begin. A new generation of Ilkley traders has grown up determined to preserve the traditions of Old Ilkley, as it still is and hopefully always will be.

ABOUT OUR MAIN SPONSOR Kashmiri Aroma restaurant
Since its launch in September 2008, Kashmiri Aroma has proved to be one of Ilkley’s most loved restaurants, being a particular favourite with families. The team at Kashmiri Aroma is renowned for offering warm hospitality, professionalism and traditional Kashmiri cuisine, playing its part in ensuring the traditional curry remains one of the nation’s favourite meals.
Little Escroft café – popular with walkers and cyclists, 1920s
The mini chain restaurant group has three additional sites in Sheffield, Wakefield and the most recent in Halifax, which also boasts an elegant and refined design concept. This is the fourth consecutive year that Kashmiri Aroma has been the main carnival sponsor. Tariq Mahmood, Managing Director of the group, said: “We are proud to be a growing part of the UK’s expanding Kashmiri cuisine movement and engaging with the community is as high on our agenda as it always has been. Sponsoring and supporting Ilkley Carnival reflects our family values and is something our entire team enjoys being a part of as we see so many of our supportive friends, often with other family and guests having a great day out. We’re looking forward to being a part of the ‘Best of British’ theme this year and adding our touch to the diverse dimensions that represent the Ilkley community. As well as having fun, the carnival raises much needed funds for some very worthy local causes, who are often forgotten. We’re looking forward to the ‘Best Ilkley Carnival Ever’ in 2016 and are looking forward to seeing everyone there!” Best Wishes Tariq Mahmood

ILKLEY CARNIVAL WELCOME TO THE 2015
ILKLEY CARNIVAL 2016
Hello again! Ilkley Rocks is back for another year with some fantastic acts for you to relax and listen to on the carnival showground. We would like to thank everyone who has helped bring another fantastic line up to the carnival day and made our live music feature the success it is! Now for the exciting news. Next year Ilkley Rocks will be even bigger – and we want you to be a part of it. We want to keep growing and the only way we can, is with your support. We’re always on the look-out for performers, so if you’d like to play to crowds of around 10,000 on the busiest bank holiday Monday in Ilkley’s 2017 calendar, just contact Danny Greenwood at danny@pinnaclegd.co.uk
NEON DOLLS 12.30pm – 1.15pm Neon Dolls are a 4 piece indie rock n roll/ Alternative band from Leeds that have been described as 'Detroit rock sound with their own mix of sleazy indie'. Or, to put it another way, loud and anthemic in a way most modern indie bands are scared of doing. Formed in July 2014, Neon Dolls have played to many sold out gigs, and continue to increase their fanbase with every show. The self financed, self released, debut album was released in May 2015 and they are currently writing and recording the follow up for release in November 2016.
APOLLO JUNCTION 1.30pm – 2.15pm Apollo Junction were formed in 2012 by 5 former band rivals with the intention of forming a ‘supergroup’ to write and perform electro, indie, guitar inspired songs infused with tuneful melodies that everyone can dance to. Early days were spent writing, recording and gigging but 2013, 2014 & 2015 have proved amazing years for Apollo Junction with national and worldwide media exposure through newspapers and radio.
CRAIG BRAUNS BAND 2.30pm – 3.15pm Originating from Leeds, Craig has toured with and supported bands such as Terrorvision, Kula Shaker, The Darkness and The Quire Boys. But now, he’s returned to family basics, joining forces with brother Greg and stepfather Dave to present The Craig Brauns Band, whose music suits its background: a Saturday night set that provides a fresh take on some of rock n rolls biggest influences. The explosion of funky country rock is driven by the energy of singer Craig Brauns, which is simply infectious.
RICHIE SCHMARLER 3.30pm – 4.15pm Leeds born singer/songwriter Richie is recognized throughout the county for his memorable acoustic covers and originals. His unique style presents plenty of character and passion, with his talents also demonstrating a distinguished guitar style and strong vocal abilities. After hosting open mic nights in the city of Leeds for an extensive period of time, Richie has tailored his live sets to a perfect performance. His act includes a vast variety of music, from covers of classics to foot tapping upbeat songs.
