WELCOME TO ILKLEY CARNIVAL 2014

Welcome to Ilkley Carnival and ‘The Yorkshire Tour’. This is an exciting time for the town as we look forward to welcoming the Tour de France later this year. It’s also an exciting time for Ilkley Carnival as the event continues to evolve while remaining a family fun day at the heart of the community. In the last few years we have seen the introduction of the free craft tent, last year the free ‘corner’ providing activities and entertainment and this year we’re having live music as the culmination of our three-day “Ilkley Rocks” festival. With such a dedicated committee on board, Ilkley Carnival will continue to expand and develop its offering of free activities and fundraising initiatives. Last years’ event was wonderfully successful, very well attended and raised over £12,000 profit for local good causes. After a tough selection process LS29 Support Group were this year selected as main beneficiary and will receive 50% of profits made. LS29 provides an invaluable service supporting almost 100 local families who have children with special needs. The group receives very little funding and we hope Ilkley Carnival can assist this very worthwhile cause. I would also like to thank W Marshalls Fun Fair, not only for their ongoing support of our event but also for providing LS29 with free rides and entertainment at this year’s Carnival - a fantastic gesture and indicative of the community spirit we hope to create. Community spirit was also demonstrated by Sean and Charlie Connolly who, seeing our social media plea, kindly donated an unused Wii to Ilkley Stroke Club, one of the shortlisted parties for main beneficiary. This was another wonderful gesture and again demonstrates the impact of Ilkley Carnival as an event by the community, for the community. Ilkley Carnival is lucky to have long standing and loyal supporters including Sweets of Yesteryear, Showtime Inflatables and the local businesses and charities who exhibit on the field. We are also pleased to welcome back Kashmiri Aroma as main sponsor and Stray FM who will be entertaining us on the day. We welcome new sponsors in All Terrain Cycles (parade), Linley & Simpson (football tournament), Poppy Red (craft tent) and Spooner Industries (VIP/helpers tent) whose support means we can increase the quality and free entertainment provided. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all sponsors, advertisers, volunteers and of course all who attend the event. Your involvement will ensure Ilkley Carnival not only continues but grows. The final thank you is to the children who make this event what it is. The parade is a massive part of the Ilkley Carnival and we have another record number of participants this year. The Carnival Committee is immensely grateful to all local schools, clubs and organisations who make this such a wonderful spectacle. The town turns out in force and visitors come to witness the high quality on show. We are very grateful for the enthusiasm, commitment and participation of our local schools and parents who create such imaginative costumes. It wouldn’t be the event it is without you. Enjoy the day!

WINDOW DISPLAY COMPETITION 2014

It’s been another fantastic year for the Ilkley Carnival annual window display competition, with the town getting behind the carnival – and the competition – once again. ‘The Yorkshire Tour’ themed displays have been popping up in shop windows around Ilkley for the past month with entrants judged on creativity, use of materials and best reflection of the carnival theme. Sponsored for the third year by Ilkley-based Approach PR, the winning store receives one month of free PR worth £850. Since relaunching in 2012, the competition has seen the winning trophies clinched by Nora’s Interiors and Gifts and last year’s winner, Poppy Red children’s shoes.

Jenny Rhodes of Poppy Red (left) and 2012 winner Victoria Newhouse of Nora’s Interiors and Gifts with Suzanne Johns of Approach PR.

Helen Rhodes of Poppy Red said: “We were thrilled to win last year and we used our prize for social media support, PR training and media work that secured several pieces of press coverage.” Victoria Newhouse, owner of Nora’s Interiors and Gifts, added: “To be voted as having the best display in 2012 was brilliant but winning a month’s free PR was a genuine boost to my business and profile,” she said. “Every year there are more retailers taking part – it’s a fantastic opportunity to win a great prize while supporting the local community.” Approach managing Director, Suzanne Johns, said the competition is one of the highlights of the event for the team. “Such local engagement shows the carnival isn’t simply a day-long event, it’s an occasion which unites everyone from retailers and businesses to local families and tourists.” She added: “We can’t wait to present the trophy on carnival day and kick start another PR programme for another local store.”

BENEFICIARIES

Ilkley Carnival – benefiting your community Ilkley Carnival has families and fun at its very core, which is why we’re delighted to announce that this year’s primary beneficiary is the LS29 Special Needs group - the only local group in the area to support families of children with all types of special needs. Every year, the profits from Ilkley Carnival are ploughed back into our local area benefiting sporting, charitable and volunteer organisations and schools. Last year, thanks to your support, over £12k was raised with £6k going to the nominated primary beneficiary, Ilkley and District Good Neighbours. This year, the Ilkley Carnival committee had over 20 applications for primary beneficiary status and after a series of emotive pitches and several jugs of coffee, the committee selected LS29 Special Needs Group as the organisation that will receive 50% of profits from this year’s event. Founded in 2006 and run entirely by parents of children with special needs, LS29 provides accessible activities for children with a wide range of needs including profound and multiple learning difficulties, life limiting conditions and physical disabilities. Co-founder Karen Goodman said: “We are delighted to have been chosen as primary beneficiary for 2014. Less than £10k provides a year’s worth of activities for around 300 individuals so if Ilkley Carnival produces as much profit as last year, it will go a long way towards covering the cost of 12 months of experiences and challenges that will improve confidence, wellbeing and behaviour.” Ilkley Carnival is entirely reliant on volunteers and the support of our community for a successful and profitable event. If you could offer your time, ideas, skills or just enthusiasm to making next year’s carnival the best yet, please contact committee secretary Mari Hunt on carnisec@gmail.com or call chairman Andrew Stacey on 07951 890836. 2013 BENEFICIARIES OVERVIEW

Ten local organisations received funds from the profits of the 2013 Ilkley Carnival thanks to generous sponsorship, donations, programme advertising and the all-important ticket sales on the day. Here’s an overview of how the money was spent within the local community. Ilkley and District Good Neighbours In 2013, Ilkley and District Good Neighbours received a £6k payout following £12k of funds raised on the day – the biggest in the carnival’s recent history. John Jewitt, Chairman of IDGN, said the funds have been an invaluable boost to the organisation which supports local older and vulnerable residents. “We never could have imagined receiving such a sum from Ilkley Carnival, but we immediately ploughed it into our services and broke the “100 barrier” for the first time with the number of Christmas presents we could distribute. We filled the Clarke Foley Centre to capacity for our over 90s party and we introduced an additional excursion to the Dales.” He added: “It’s wonderful that the Ilkley Carnival has made such a difference to an older generation who may otherwise be forgotten, isolated and alone.” Ben Rhydding De Mohicanen Scout & Guide Group A 20-year fundraising drive received a significant boost with a donation from Ilkley Carnival in 2013. The Ben Rhydding De Mohicanen Scout and Guide Group needed £330,000 to rebuild the headquarters used by 240 local people aged six to 25. With funds raised now at £260,000, the group began building in March this year.

The Carnival Committee and main sponsor present the cheque to our beneficiaries.

Pete Bastow, Joint Group Scout Leader, said the Ilkley Carnival donation made a major contribution to the fundraising drive. He added: “Our old HQ was 40 years old and badly in need of repair. Two decades of fundraising was boosted by the fantastic donation from Ilkley Carnival and we’re looking forward to offering a new era of community support from our new premises in 2014.” Ilkley Pre School Ilkley Pre School used Ilkley Carnival funds to help cover the cost of “much needed” ICT equipment for the children. The investment included a new PC for use as an interactive touch and drawing device to allow children to explore their creative side, alongside new computer software. Sue Williamson, Ilkley Pre School manager, said: “The ICT equipment we have purchased with Ilkley Carnival funds will make a huge difference to the lives of our pupils through enabling teachers to assist with the development of their hand-eye coordination as well as essential ICT skills.”

CTI2000 CTI2000 is a charity formed as a millennium project to help people with learning difficulties obtain housing, employment, training and other support for independent living. One of the group’s trustees, Hamish Currie, said the Ilkley Carnival donation helped cover costs involved with a range of activities for people with learning difficulties including maintaining their allotment, helping to run the group’s Buzz Club, dance and contact groups. The money also helped towards a summer outing for members. Ilkley Rugby Club The Ilkley Rugby Club’s donation from Ilkley Carnival helped cover the cost of club maintenance, paying for new kit, coaches and supporting the juniors. Club treasurer Joe Widdup said: “We hugely appreciate the contribution Ilkley Carnival makes to the club as all donations made allow us to manage the cost of day to day operations and running so we can continue to provide world class facilities to the community.” Soroptimists The Ilkley Soroptimists is the local arm of an international organisation which campaigns, amongst other things, for the elimination of violence against women. President of the Ilkley group, Gill Wilkinson, said: “The 2013 Ilkley Carnival donation was very welcome and helped us carry on our work. The money went towards many local projects including funding our Saturday morning tennis lessons at Ilkley Lido, marketing materials to recruit more members to help us deploy more resources to good causes and towards materials for our stand at the Clarke Foley Christmas Fayre where we in turn raised money for The Yorkshire Air Ambulance and a local women’s refuge.” Martin House Children’s Hospice Martin House Children’s Hospice is committed to caring for children and young people with life limiting illnesses and provides support for their families. With costs exceeding £4 million a year to run, the charity relies on continuous donations and fund raising events to support their activity.

Pam Brunger, Honorary Secretary of Martin House, said: “Martin House is very grateful for the 2013 donation from Ilkley Carnival which covered the cost of medical supplies for the hospice for a whole week.” Ilkley in Bloom The volunteer-run Ilkley in Bloom group is responsible for creating and maintaining many eye-catching and beautiful flower displays and gardens featured throughout the town. The Ilkley Carnival donation helped fund a range of projects that fall outside of the council’s remit including maintaining St Margaret’s Park and contributing towards the cost of new plants. Further work included uncovering the prehistoric cup and ring stones including the Panorama Stone which forms a part of Ilkley’s heritage. Ben Rhydding Sports Club Ilkley Carnival’s donation to Ben Rhydding Sports Club came just as support for the clubhouse was needed to ensure the continuation of facilities for the teams and clubs that use the premises. Alongside general maintenance of the clubhouse, the club also recognised the need to add to its first aid and lifesaving equipment and used some of the carnival funds to pay for a defibrillator. Member Robin Snook said: “Donations from Ilkley Carnival have historically helped cover unexpected costs and planned investments over the years. As a club, we experience directly the difference Ilkley Carnival makes to the services we offer children and adults in our community.” Burley Bridge Association The Burley Bridge Association has been campaigning for a bridge crossing at Greenholme in Burley in Wharfedale since 1996. The group’s Association Secretary Peter Young said: “The donation from Ilkley Carnival helped towards the planning application for the bridge, which we are hoping to submit by the middle of the year. If approved we would have planning permission by autumn 2014 - a significant milestone for us as the need for a bridge at Greenholme was identified as far back as 1898.”

Waiting for wednesday This feisty femme-folk duo describe stories of love, life and protest through their songs with distinct and powerful voices. The Amercana style with country twang is a sure-fire way to take you back to the 60s with their selection of acoustic harmonies.

Lucie Lucie is a small girl with a big personality. She may only be 13 but she’s got a lot to say for herself with her original songs about her boring school teachers, chavs, and her love of the “goggle box”. Lucie also sings covers by Kaiser Chiefs and Ed Sheeran.

Liam jarvis Bradford-born Liam Jarvis is back in the UK after touring Asia and Australia with his soulfull and unique sets. In anticipation of his upcoming debut EP ‘Playing Around with Misery’ Liam is back touring the UK with his distinctive style of storytelling through music.

Chloe maya Growing up we all feel the need to fit in, but Chloe’s quirky personality and sense of style has always made her different from the other wannabes. Dancing from the age of 3, and singing from 10 years old, Chloe needed an outlet for her creativity.

Quentins basement This 4-piece Indie Rock band from Leeds combine bouncy tunes and catchy riffs to thrill audiences through their performances. This set of Yorkshire lads will be donning their tight trousers for another highly fuelled and energetic appearance in their home county.

charlotte beal 15 year old Charlotte Beal is a country pop singer with an amazing voice. Writing songs about her experiences with bullying and alienation but always with a positive twist, Charlotte gives hope to people with similar issues.

The Ramblers The Ramblers were formed in 2012 in Keighley and are said to be one of the hardest working bands in the district, performing around the country. The band came together with mutual love of music, performing and recording Rock ‘n’ Roll material.

tina reid & The ballroom blitz A 4-piece band that plays good-time Country. Whether it’s original songs about Kung-Fu kicking her ex husband or country covers of classics like 10cc’s Rubber Bullets and Sweet’s BallRoom Blitz, Tina and the guys promise you a thigh slapping good time!

Feeds Continuing their penchant for innovative and exciting music videos, the Leeds based 5-piece are back with their latest release ‘Shallow Eyes’. Having premiered the song live in session with BBC Radio Leeds, the video highlights some of Leeds’ best kept secrets, including Hyde Park’s Retro Boutique.

the mango conspiracy We are a young rock band from Ilkley that strive to play and create the best music possible. Initially, we started out in two different bands, but then combined to create the line-up that we are today. Recently we recorded our 3 track self-titled EP that was well received and left us excited.
