Here’s what our clients have to say... “We previously bought and have recently sold a property through Austin Gray and throughout both transactions we have been very impressed with their commitment, knowledge and professionalism. Austin Gray were instrumental in ensuring that our sale went through quickly, offering advice throughout, and on a number of occasions went over and above what would be expected of an estate agent. We would highly recommend Austin Gray and would not hesitate in using them again. They are a prime example of how a quality estate agent should operate.” E.Cragg.

“We have sold and bought property through Austin Gray. The customer service we received was outstanding and their knowledge of Brighton’s housing market is invaluable. They are different from other estate agents because they are down-to-earth, reliable and straight talking. They went above and beyond to help us get our dream home at a very challenging time in the housing market. I cannot recommend them highly enough.” L Marlin.

“Excellent service from everyone at Austin Gray – always professional; helpful, sensible advice; and always kept us informed about viewings and feedback.” H.Tyas.

The complications of retiring Just before Christmas there was much negative news about how people are not getting the best income in their retirement. It didn’t sound too positive by any means, but the conclusion seemed to be that the whole system was very complicated, and that you should take advice at this crucial stage in your life. There are many options when you retire and the whole thing can be quite bewildering. The right choice depends totally on your circumstances and what you are looking for from your retirement income. Some people want absolute guarantees, others require flexibility. Some are single and are not worried about providing an income to a spouse should they die, for others a widow’s pension is essential. When you reach retirement age, your pension provider will write to you offering an annuity, some people just sign the form and take this option. But how do you know your current provider is offering the right annuity for you and the maximum income? You could get more elsewhere, especially if you have history of ill health, you could be eligible for an enhanced annuity. This is because if your life expectancy is less, some providers would be willing to pay a higher amount as they think they won’t have to pay you for as long. All providers will offer different amounts of income for your capital, it is essential to shop around. I will briefly explain the main options: Annuity: An annuity is a guaranteed income paid to you for life (or possibly for a fixed period, depending on the type and features of the annuity chosen) from an insurance company. The annuity would be purchased using the money you have built up in your pension plans during your working life. The insurance company will assess how long they think you will live and will quote the amount of guaranteed income they are willing to pay in return for your lump sum. Income Drawdown: Your pension money would remain invested and you can take either no income, or income up to a maximum set level from the investment each year. This method can provide higher death benefits

and a more flexible income. There are, however, a number of increased risks – such as the risk of your capital being eroded over time, or of market fluctuations adversely affecting the value of your investment funds - inherent in these products which should be taken into consideration before taking this route. For independent advice on any of the above, or if you are approaching retirement and looking at your options please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to assist. The winners of the twenty fifth Sussex Business Awards were announced at the Brighton Dome in December. 500 of the county’s leading business people gathered to celebrate twenty five years of business excellence, many of whom were previous award winners themselves. VIPs in attendance included Peter Field, Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex and Chairman of the Judges. The awards were presented by Countdown’s Rachel Riley. The Award for the greatest contribution to charity was made to John Peel OBE. Presenting his award, the publisher of Absolute Magazine, Alan Prior said: “John has been a driving force behind the Sussex Community Foundation, which has already awarded around £6 million in grants to over 1,500 community groups since it was founded in 2006. And as a managing director he turned a loss-making £3 million business into a highly profitable £65 million turnover success. A true example of a

Peter Field, Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex Chair of the Sussex Business Awards judging panel for the third year commented: “I am really impressed at the resilience of our companies and individuals in the face of a slow economic recovery and to see that, far from just staying alive, all our entrants managed to develop their businesses and increase their market share. “To me it proves that the timely and clever decisions they made while trading through the downturn has ensured that they held their nerve and are ready to take the advantage as the economy steps up another gear. “Their stories and achievements are all remarkable, and it was only at the end of a very long day of debate that the final list of winners for the Awards emerged.”
