Don a daffodil Marie Curie Cancer Care is appealing for people in the Brighton area to donate an hour of their time this March, to hand out the charity’s iconic daffodil pin in return for donations, as part of the charity’s Great Daffodil Appeal. The appeal is Marie Curie’s biggest fundraiser which encourages everyone to give a donation and wear a daffodil pin during March.

The money raised from the Great Daffodil Appeal will help Marie Curie Nurses to provide more free care to local people with a terminal illness in their own homes.

Actress Keira Knightley said: “I’m urging anyone who has an hour or two to spare, to collect for the charity this March. The money you raise by ensuring as many people as possible are wearing the charity’s daffodil pin, will help Marie Curie nurse terminally ill people in their final hours.”

Pint-sized History Throughout 2013, Lewes will play host to a year of exciting, free events and activities aimed at celebrating the heritage of the brewing and related agricultural industries in Lewes. Behind the Scenes See it all come together as we take you up close and personal on this month’s fashion shoot.

The February fashion shoot was one to remember and with a hand-picked creative team on board including photography and production, set styling and hair and makeup, we chat to some of the people that made it happen.

Kevin Mason at Create Studios I was keen to do the shoot because I was intrigued by Kate Morton’s idea of combining bridal with Jess Eaton’s couture. It was a challenge, as it’s not an area of ‘fashion’ that I have really dealt with before, so I wanted to treat the pieces as dresses in their own right and not specifically bridal. The inspiration for photographing the shoot came from a Josh Olins’ shoot for Dazed and Confused using Viktor and Rolf tulle dresses. It is one of the most inspiring stories I’ve seen, it’s so graceful and beautiful and has such strength and simplicity. Knowing how strong Jess’ designs are, I knew we had to try and break the silhouette

Too much of a good thing Adam Lewis says it’s all about the calories, and the appealing non-counting diets are not really the best way to lose weight

R

ecently a client with a goal of weight loss handed me their food diary and we looked at what she had eaten for her evening meal. On paper it looked great, fish, potatoes and vegetables, hard to find too much fault. But when we started looking in closer detail and running the numbers of calorie content, some common issues started to reveal themselves, mistakes you could be making too!

The client said she knew fish was supposed to be good for you, a good source of protein and healthy fats, so served up trout and sardines that were in her fridge. The potatoes provided some carbs needed for energy, and she also wanted three types of vegetables, hence the peas, beans and the cauliflower cheese that were leftover from a previous day.

Of the allowed 500 calories for her evening meal, we worked out that the trout was about 240, the potatoes 190 and the peas and beans about 50, totaling 480 calories. The cauliflower cheese added another 150, and the sardines 450, meaning her whole plate resulted in a whopping 1080 calories. This was double the amount intended and well over half her daily allowance!

This led the client to ask why it was so bad considering the food was quite healthy and most of the calories were coming from the good fats in fish. A reasonable question and an issue I think many people trying to lose weight have, the misunderstanding between ‘healthy’ food and calorie content.

Broadly speaking ‘healthy’ foods tend to be naturally lower calorie, or contain substances that have useful properties when consumed, whilst less healthy foods tend to be the opposite, so you might think you should eat lots of the ‘healthy’ foods. But, keep in mind the phrase, ‘you can have too much of a good thing’.

Even a meal containing only healthy foods won’t help your weight loss goals if there is too much of it. Portion size control is important each meal, as is limiting the amount of food you eat per day. Health treats, snack boxes, diet bars, light meals, weight loss shakes all may offer low calorie options but they will still cause weight gain if you eat too much of them, or more likely, if you eat them on top of your normal diet.

Consuming more calories than you need, irrespective of whether they are from healthy foods will still cause weight gain. I’m aware it’s appealing to promote a diet where calories don’t have to be counted, but in the end the science of weight loss is all about those numbers.

I am a stand up who also comperes from time to time. There is a common misconception amongst audience members that the compere is not an act. Often people will say to you after a show, “ You were as good as the stand ups ... you should give it a go!” I like to think of myself as the glue for a show if I am compering, hanging it all together.

Bent Double has a predominantly loyal gay crowd but not exclusively so. I book both gays and straight acts but my aim was to create a club where gay people would really enjoy the acts and feel comfortable. That is not to say they would not enjoy a ‘regular’ comedy night but there obviously isn’t going to be any of the lazy, passively homophobic comments I still sometimes hear in some clubs on the circuit.

I work most of the time on the national circuit playing to largely straight crowds. There ain’t no pigeonholing me! Have you ever tried to get in a pigeon hole? It’s not easy.

You can never tell how receptive an audience will be. I am constantly being surprised as a comedian. I have learnt not to prejudge audiences because so many times I have turned up to a gig looked at the room and thought, ‘this is going to be awful!’ And they have ended up being the nicest gigs. Corporate gigs are often tricky. When you have been booked for the after dinner entertainment. They can be a nightmarish experience. They are the ‘grab the cheque and run’ gigs.

On the whole, Brighton audiences tend to be quite comedy savvy and dare I say it, a little brighter than your average audience. Comedians like playing gigs in here.

I had always loved stand up comedy, but I had absolutely no idea how to go about starting in the business. The thought of simply getting on stage and talking to the audience terrified me. I had already gone to university and then drama school and then spent quite a few years trying to get acting work without much success. It took me until I was nearly 30 before I finally gave stand up a go. I booked myself to do a five minute spot in a new act night. I did it and loved it and just carried on from there.

When I was young I was inspired by many of the American acts that I used to see on the telly: Emo Phillips, Rita Rudner, Steve Martin, Robin Williams. As a family we would sit down at Christmas and watch Billy Connolly and Victoria Wood. Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther movies was a real favourite when I was small. I was allowed to stay up late to watch those films.

I have just done a short tour abroad with Canadian stand up Glen Wool who I think is brilliant. There are loads of emerging acts from Brighton too. I think Sam Savage is great, really makes me laugh as does Angela Barnes.

I performed in Cambodia this year, that was fun, different but fun. The food was incredible. Any gig where good food is involved is a highlight in my eyes.

There is a vibrancy and energy about this place that other cities just do not have. I travel all over the UK and there is no place I would rather be.

And what’s next for Eatonott? Jess is continually adding to her couture collection for the shop, reworking existing pieces and creating new designs. There are plenty of shop projects in the pipeline for both Eaton and Nott including new art pieces and sculpture perhaps. It seems that there is nothing they won’t tackle. When asked if they’ve ever had any strange requests, Eaton smiles: “John and I are probably stranger than any requests we’ve ever had. We are pretty unshockable.”

After all, when they hosted the Eatonnott launch party to a heaving crowd, Jess’ brother-in-law had just returned from Asia and brought with him a selection of scorpions, locusts, crickets and frogs. I know what you’re thinking, you’re thinking, no they didn’t did they? But they did. They served them as canapés, and the plates were wiped clean.

It is of great interest to me how the interiors of houses have developed through centuries, how styles have changed, and how we might adapt those styles from the past into our modern way of life. To me ‘Period Style’ is not just for stately homes, museums and other grand places. This is a style that can be translated into our own homes. These days the desire to decorate homes in the most authentic way has never been stronger.

By mixing old with new, authentic with reproduction and by using the wealth of new wallpaper, fabric and flooring that is available today the task of creating a period style home can be much less daunting.

This is a style that can be achieved with confidence in a cost effective way, and still evoke the atmosphere of grandeur. In my own home the distressed and the recycled share space with the more elegant and superior.There is something very calming about a room where old meets new and mixes comfortably together in a wonderfully eclectic way.

If you are thinking of adding a period touch to your home – a few points worthwhile considering:

olour

Colour can change the character of a house from one era to another. I have a great fondness for the latter Georgian period, I love their pallet of muted colours: soft grey, pale green, pale pink, and ‘dead’ white. In the past the colours were kept for the walls and “white” was mainly used for the mouldings, but in a modern room if you have dark wood furniture it is lightened and brightened by using white on walls. With so many shades of white to choose from you will find the white that suits your home the best. (Farrow and Ball have a wide selection of period colours.)

abric

The great furnishing fabrics of the past were sumptuous and expensive, but similar effects can be achieved today at a more moderate cost. Certain shops, such as Ikea, have some great linen – mix fabrics, floor length muslin and lace curtains. For me curtains have to be long, sweeping the floor and elegant. I once read about a designer who used builders ‘dust’ sheets for curtains! They really do make beautiful curtains as I too have made them for my house. You will be amazed, I promise! Remember to wash them on a delicate wash as they will shrink a little.

urniture

Furniture can be either painted or polished however if you’re lucky enough to have in your possession a piece of antique furniture do not attempt to paint it as this would be a sin! Woods do not have to match but should complement each other. You can pick up some amazing period pieces from some of the larger charity shops. Almost all of my bedroom furniture, except my sleigh bed, come from second-hand shops and are worth much more than I paid for them. I love these pieces for their age, beauty and patina, and would never part with them.

I have a great passion for candles and nothing evokes a period feel like the flicker of candlelight, however today we cannot live under candlelight alone, so for me the crowning glory in any room is the graceful chandelier. It looks equally good whether in a period home or a modern apartment. A lone chandelier even in a room that has nothing else can lift and enhance the whole space. There are many reproduction French style chandeliers that can be bought locally for a fraction of the cost of an original one, so it’s worthwhile looking around.

No period home is complete without pictures. A picture or a painting is what makes a statement in a room, it is an essential ingredient in a period home. A piece of artwork can be bought at little cost. When you have the time browse through second-hand shops and car boot sales – you may just be lucky enough to come across an unexpected treasure! We are also very lucky to have great artists living right here in Sussex and most exhibit their work in local galleries.

If you want to start collecting paintings or pictures, it makes sense to collect ones that share a theme. So for the kitchen you may want pictures of food whereas nudes are better suited for the bedroom or bathroom.

Portraits on the other hand look good in the lounge but really there is no right or wrong – just go with whatever appeals to you.

ccessories

Many of today’s modern or minimalist spaces lack soul and are devoid of accessories, more like a hotel than a home - stark and formal. Accessories play a great part in a period home. There are simply too many beautiful objects to list and my home is filled with many. The only advice I can give here is always choose accessories that are pleasing to the eye and have special meaning to you. Beautiful mismatched China sits well in a period house as do all kinds of silverware and I am an avid collector of both! A period home is where you use your best China, silver and finest linen every day, not only on special occasions.

These collections should be assembled over time and will add charm and elegance to your home.

No matter how your home comes together it should always contain the essence of comfort and style. A home needs time to evolve, the finishing touches cannot be decided in advance. The house that has come together in slow progression will feel loved and lived-in, never too formal or perfect.

I hope you have been inspired to bring a little ‘period style’ into your own homes no matter where you live.

What is Zumba?

Firstly I shall start by saying what it is not. It is not a serious dance class. It is not like aerobics classes. It does not take it’s self too seriously. It is dancing with your friends and really enjoying the music.

Zumba is exercise to music that doesn’t feel like hard work or too much effort.

You do not have to have good coordination or any dance training, you just need to be able to move and smile. I am not a trained dancer but have always loved to rip up any dance floor I can get my feet on, I have learnt different styles by watching and copying others over the years.

You could also do the same in my classes trying out new moves and listening to music that you may be slightly different to your normal playlist.

The music is a selection of Latino beats and also some modern more English styles with different tempos, so we can work up a sweat and then catch our breath.

Chippendale Period Furniture Maker

T

homas Chippendale has often been called the “Shakespeare” of English cabinet makers. He furnished many of England’s greatest houses, like Nostell Priory and Harewood house as well as the town houses of the rich and famous. To have your house decorated by Chippendale became the fashion of the day.

Chippendale entered a vigorous craft tradition which was still capable of further refinement and not yet threatened by factory mass production, and he came to manhood when heavy furniture was becoming outmoded - a time when creative change was in the air. This was not just a matter of demand for lighter and more elegant furniture, but involved a simple but decisively important technical change - in board terms, the replacement of walnut by mahogany as the wood used for quality furniture. Chippendale became the first great figure of the Age of Mahogany.

Chippendale was much more than just a cabinet maker, he was an interior designer who advised on soft furnishings and even the colour a room should be painted. Chippendale often took on large-scale commissions from aristocratic clients.

In 1754 Chippendale published his masterful collection, Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director, a compilation of fashionable English furniture design.

This work is Chippendale’s enduring legacy, and shows his gift in adapting existing design styles to the fashion of the mid 18th century.

The book was a major source of inspiration and influence in furniture design. The materialist age he lived in offered ample scope for his remarkable talents; industrial development had brought great wealth to many, and Chippendale had a long list of patrons anxious to enhance their homes.

Catherine the Great and Louis XVI both possessed copies of the Director in its French edition. The Director shows four main styles: English with deep carving, elaborate French rococo in the style of Louis XV furniture, Chinese style with latticework and lacquer, and Gothic with pointed arches, quatrefoils and fret-worked legs. Chippendale’s designs covered a wide range of styles, from Rococo to Gothic and chinoiserie (oriental style).

Even when a piece can be attributed with certainty to Chippendale’s workshop, it is impossible to say for certain that he worked on the furniture himself. As the Chippendale firm became successful, more and more work was carried out by trained workmen rather than Chippendale himself.

In the latter years Thomas Chippendale had numerous problems in obtaining his payments from the rich customers, and it is thought he hardly had any money when he died in 1779.

Thomas Chippendale (born on 16 June 1718) was a London cabinet-maker and furniture designer in the mid-Georgian period. He moved to London in 1748, where he opened his furniture showrooms and workshop in St. Martin’s Lane, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life.

Chippendale’s designs became popular again during the middle to late 19th century, leading to widespread adoption of his name in revivals of his style.

Beautiful Glassware

N

o home is complete without a collection of glassware - in fact it’s a necessity. After all who would like to drink a glass of chilled chardonnay in a cup! A beautiful glass adds to your drinking pleasure, no matter if it is water, wine or a glass of champagne.

Contemporary or vintage design; fine glassware is a feast for the eyes.

Glass is such a romantic substance – clear or coloured, plain or engraved, vintage or modern, glass is irresistibly beautiful. A mere arrangement of sparkling glassware will instantly bring a room to life.

I am actually obsessed when it comes to collecting glassware, especially vintage wine carafes, decanters and candlesticks. I own a couple of beautiful old decanters which I use in my bathroom for bath essence - bringing with them a touch of vintage charm to my bathroom. They look lovely sitting on the shelf and so do glass jars in which I like to keep French soap. I’m looking to add to my bathroom accessories as I think a few glass vintage scent bottles would sit very well alongside my decanters.

Glass cloches make the perfect display cases for all sorts of things, long ago these would have been used to cover seedlings in the garden. But today can be used to house your favourite display of either ornament or a deliciously iced cake! Talking of cake there are some exquisite cake stands around with amazing crystalline patterns in pressed-glass.

These can be picked up quite cheaply, usually under £10 each and they are a useful decorating accessory.

They not only elevate cakes and other delicacies, but can also be used for holding candles and tea-lights.

Bottles that were thrown away years ago can be found in car boot sales and coloured glass bottles look particularly good when rays of sunlight filters threw them. Look for old bottles in vivid colours of aqua, blue, green and amber. Use these to display single stem flowers around the home or mass them together for one perfect display on a windowsill.

A piece of glassware can make a wonderful gift.

Recently for my father-in-laws birthday my husband and I thought long and hard about his gift as it was an extra special birthday. We finally decided to give him an engraved brandy glass along with his favourite brandy - “Remy Martin” VSOP. We hope the glass will heighten the pleasure of taking his after dinner brandy.

Glass with its wonderful light-reflecting qualities bring a touch of elegance to a room, whether they are in the form of drinking vessels, jars or beautiful chandeliers.

he hugely popular Royal Pavilion Ice Rink will stay on for an extra five weeks this year and will be open until February 24.

The rink has attracted thousands of visitors to the city, including numerous celebrities, among them local star Patsy Palmer with her children who have become regulars. It has also attracted many TV film crews, including hosting its first wedding for an episode of BBC’s ‘Don’t tell the Bride’ last month.

Scallop shucking time It is the perfect time to enjoy one of the sea’s finest treats - scallops. Scallops are free-moving, not attaching themselves to rocks or other objects in the way that other molluscs like oysters and mussels do. They are rich in vitamin B12 and omega 3 fatty acids, magnesium and potassium and no fish gourmet would be without them.

One of the most delightful seaside towns in Sussex is Rye and scallops have long been an important harvest in this part of Sussex. This month, the annual Rye Bay Scallop Week showcases scallops and the many and wonderful ways they can be enjoyed (February 2 to 10).

The restaurant and bar, run by Jamie Oliver’s Fabulous Feasts, will also be ‘upping the ante’ by introducing some new food, drink and cocktails which can be enjoyed by skaters and spectators alike.

It’s a good menu and it always delivers its promise. A simple smoked salmon starter is always a good test of a restaurant’s ability to source quality and theirs is exemplary. Chicken livers were cooked just sufficiently to keep them succulent and tender and the mussels were a good size, plump and with a well-judged sauce. The dressed crab, unlike some I’ve eaten, had a sauce light enough to bring out the flavour of the crabmeat, rather than mug it.

My heart always sinks when I see Lemon Sole on a menu – I’ve never in my life ordered a lemon sole that was worth eating, and I’ve never met anyone who has. I don’t understand why so many restaurants persevere with this soggy, pointless fish that tastes as flat as it looks, and is priced here at a sky high £21.95. I’d rather pay a tenner or more extra and have a Dover Sole (not offered), in my view still the king of all fish. Lobster Thermidor with chips is a dish I disagree with twice over. Why kill the delicate flavour of lobster with cheese, and no two ingredients could go be less suited to each other than lobster and fries. Elsewhere the mains score highly. Choucroute du Vin is a bold spin on the pork belly that is now a fashion statement on every menu, Roasted Hot Shells is an assortment of shellfish cooked with a sure touch, and perfect sauce. Few restaurants can cook a steak better. Their ribeye is as good as beef gets – when I’m in a steak mood and I see

Firstly (Feb 9-10th) All of Life; Science has proved what we always knew; the most important thing in life is sex (Robin Ince’s Dirty Book Club, Friday Feb 8th and The Science of Sex, Saturday Feb 9th). We also celebrate the 60th anniversary of the unravelling of life’s blueprint. DNA is arguably the most important molecule of the 20th century (DNA DAY, Sunday Feb 10th).

Secondly (Feb 16-17th) Bright Sparks weekend brings the family together for a stream of hands-on workshops and demos, every one an eye-popper.

Hissing cockroaches, reptiles, sheep patting, edible geology, science magic, or operating a giant drawing machine made from an old bicycle in an action packed weekend of live science.

Thirdly (Feb 23-24th) White Heat is designed with post-12s in mind – more demanding activities for a more demanding age. With zombies, practical jokes, vampires, robots, skateboard technology, the Incredible Machine and ingenious inventions in a weekend of creative mayhem.

Finally (March 2-3rd) Le Geekend: The Big Science Weekend proves there’s nowhere in the world, or off it, which can’t astonish. Ben Goldacre, Richard Wiseman, entertainment from snails to Shakespeare with a silver of infinity and a dazzle of interpretive dance thrown in.

Carmen - Feb 6th, Theatre Royal Bizet’s dramatic and sensuous opera Carmen tells the story of the downfall of soldier Don Jose, who is seduced by the fiery, beautiful and passionate gypsy Carmen. Abandoning both his childhood sweetheart and his military career, Jose pursues Carmen but loses her to the glamorous bullfighter Escamillo. In true tragic operatic fashion, Jose can’t bear to be without Carmen and stabs her in a jealous rage.

Our Sussex Wedding Ashleigh Pugh & David Stewart The Powder Mills Hotel, Battle 23rd December 2012 We MET through work. We are both teachers at the same school, and after working together at a school production, our relationship started to blossom.

The VENUE we chose was Powder Mills as it allowed us to add our own touches. We liked the fact we could get married in one room, have the wedding breakfast in a second and the evening reception in a third room, so the whole of the day would flow, rather than have guests being moved out of a room while it was prepared for the evening, and the whole venue was nice and cosy, plenty of little rooms for people to pop into during the day.

Our HONEYMOON was in New York for a week, staying at the Empire Hotel. We flew Virgin Atlantic, and booked the honeymoon through Thomsons at Hailsham.

Do schools do enough to develop the character of students?

The former head of Brighton College, Anthony Seldon, recently wrote an essay in The Mail on Sunday arguing that there is a general lack of emphasis on the development of a pupil’s character. Below we have highlighted some of his key arguments. We asked the headteachers from some of our finest local schools if they agreed with his viewpoint.

“Why do we educate our children in schools? I think we have lost sight of their purpose, and the cold snap gives us a chance to think afresh.

“The rot set in with the publication of Dale Carnegie’s How To Win Friends And Influence People in 1936, which put superficial personality skills above deeper virtues. It opened the cult of the personality, where people are judged not by who they are but how they present themselves. We can trace good character traits back to the Greek philosopher, Aristotle, who argued that society will flourish only when we develop the virtues of our young.

“Traditional values include courage, resilience, loyalty, honesty, kindness, respect, responsibility and self-control.

“To these we might add everyday qualities: politeness,

punctuality, good manners. Studies show that these can be taught, and that they endure throughout life.

“Developing character requires teachers to emphasise positive virtues, and to model them. Self-control is learnt through exercises that reward endurance, such as long hikes. Assemblies must highlight good behaviour and students should be trusted and taught to distinguish right from wrong.

“Older pupils should be given real responsibilities. Kindness must be emphasised, and all students given chances to volunteer and serve others. But the Government cares only for improving academic standards, measured by the passing of exams.

“Their vision is sadly incomplete. The obsession with exams has caused schools to narrow what they offer, because teachers know they are being judged on academic results alone.”

haracter is the distinctive nature of someone. Character is who you are when no one is looking.

No other person holds greater responsibility for instilling values and developing character in a child than parents. However, if schools are to contribute effectively in shaping a child’s character, they have to commit to develop the whole child - socially, morally and academically. To do this a school needs to embed moral values throughout the curriculum. Learning is, and should be, fun and gratifying. But equally it can and should be challenging. Learning takes personal effort, determination and resilience to enable children to realise their potential. Character development is all about developing a child’s social and emotional competencies and instilling the habits and inner disposition to succeed.

Independent schools do exceptionally well in developing children’s character,

but could an exam syllabus covering this really ensure equality across all sectors of education? All schools should be celebrating children’s diverse personalities and skills and show them how to develop “character.” To succeed, everyone must taste failure. Let’s not be embarrassed by or dismissive of failure, but build on it.

Robert Baden-Powell called his Scout movement a “character factory” and stressed the importance of volunteering and community service. If helping others and giving back to the community contributes to making responsible human beings then, surely, character education is more than preparing children for university and jobs but about inspiring them to become socially responsible.

We need to accept that academic success is not a guarantee of achievement beyond

the school gates: often, academically ‘less successful’ pupils go on to achieve extremely well - many of them amongst the country’s most successful and wealthy people. We need to re-evaluate what is meant by school success and not think it is solely about high grades.

While the perception of hospices is commonly that of melancholy patients preparing to die, that couldn’t be further from the truth according to Gore.

“A lot of people think of hospices as places people go to die,” she said. “I had this image of it being a very dark, gloomy place where everybody whispered and actually they’re not like that.

“There is this wonderful caring thing which I think is inherent in hospice work. There’s a very, very caring ethos, which sadly you don’t get in all of the NHS acute hospitals. They all are beautiful, light, airy places and you really will hear a lot of laughter in those places.”

Another of Gore’s passions is running and, while she first started for fitness reasons, it has developed into much more for her. Although she considers it a time for reflection, her running has now become a source of fund-raising, with thousands of pounds being raised from her efforts in the Brighton and London marathons.

“I originally got involved in running to get fit,” she said. “I’m not a fast runner and I got involved very late on. I did it just as a challenge and to raise money for Friends of Sussex Hospices, so I did London (Marathon) twice and I did Brighton (Marathon) last year and I’ve done the Brighton half a few times but I love running, a lot of problems get solved or vanish while I’m running, it’s my way of meditating.”

Gore has also been involved with a number of ventures outside of her charity work in the last year, being selected as a torchbearer for the Olympic flame during its passage through Sussex as well as fulfilling her role as a Deputy Lieutenant for East Sussex.

Her role as High Sheriff of East Sussex opened her eyes to the amount of voluntary groups around the county and continues to provide her with a source of inspiration.

“That’s what motivates me,” she said. “How wonderful people are, how generous people are and you really see people want to give, they want to help, they want to volunteer.

“That year seeing all those volunteers and all the different groups and all the things they did for other people is quite motivating and inspiring.”

As she looks towards the future of her own work and the work of Friends of Sussex Hospices, she is hopeful that one-day fear and ignorance are no longer words associated with death.

“Ideally I’d love the charity not to be necessary, I’d love there to be enough money for the hospices that we didn’t need to do it,” she explained.

“While it is needed I just hope we can make a difference and help them because I think people have a fear of talking about death and I think it’s part of life and people have to talk about it, we have to accept it, it’s going to happen to all of us.

“Death and taxes, we cannot avoid them and I think the more we can help to make our exit easy and peaceful and calm and not be frightened of it, I think that, to me, is my ultimate achievement.”

So as King I hope I haven’t upset too many people but put Brighton and Hove on target for being the No.1 place to visit in Europe, Sun, Sea, Style and Sex appeal, we have it all!
