Master of the Macaron Words by Anya Zervudachi I must admit, it certainly doesn’t feel too much like a hard days work as I step into Julien Plumart’s Boutique Et Salon de Thé, on Duke Street in the centre of Brighton. In contrast to the striking, dark grey exterior of the boutique, I am immediately transported to the most magnificent world of colour beyond. I can barely believe that moments before I was traipsing through the dreary streets to have stepped into the most wonderfully lavish Parisian Patisserie. Aside from the truly immaculate interior of Julien’s Boutique, I find myself totally submerged in this colourful world, surrounded by some of the most delicious looking creations I have ever set eyes on. I am greeted warmly by a member of staff and shown to a table upstairs in the Salon du Thé. I don’t hesitate to order an Americano coffee, (at £2.00) as I always find this a good choice to gage the quality of the coffee. The first thing I notice whilst browsing the menu, is that despite its appearance and the air of sophistication about the place, the Salon is actually extremely reasonably priced. I ask for a recommendation and am assured L’ultime Tarte Au Chocolate (The Ultimate Dark Chocolate Tart at £4.45 eat in) is something only my waistline will ever regret ordering.Taking my January diet into careful consideration, I decide it only polite to order myself a Raspberry and a Pistachio macaron whilst I’m here. As the delicacies arrive I am genuinely stunned. The Chocolate Tart could be described as one of most beautiful pieces of culinary artwork I have ever seen. On top of the delicious looking dark chocolate mousse, sits a perfectly formed quenelle of thin white chocolate, which I soon discover is filled with an amazingly rich decadent white chocolate mousse. Each mouthful of this chocoholics dream is enjoyed immensely, although I soon realise the macarons are going to have to come home with me as I can barely eat another bite.

- Food & drink-

The coffee is also extremely good, with a smooth deep flavour missing that tinge of bitterness you often find. The Americano also works par ticularly well as an accompaniment to my decadent Chocolate tar t, cutting through the richness perfectly. Julien opened his first business - Cocoa Patisserie on Queens Road - in 2008, which is soon to become a brand new Julien Plumart Cafe and Patisserie. Julien has over 20 years experience, training and working in some of the top establishments in France and the UK. His past includes working along side renowned chef Raymond Blanc and recently being accredited to L’ecole de la Patisserie Lenotre Paris for his advanced macaron training and years of experience. If you are yet to have sampled the delights at Julien Plumart Boutique et Salon de Thé, I would highly recommend you drop in to either of his fabulous patisseries and treat yourself to something scrumptious. Failing that, you will soon be able to order online and have his wonderful macarons delivered straight to your door within 24 hours, absolutely perfect for dinner parties or as a birthday present or as a gift to your love one for Valentine. Julien Plumart macarons also make wonderful wedding or party favours, and if you’re looking for something particularly unique and spectacular on your wedding day, his macaroon wedding cakes are extremely special and not to missed. Clare, my macaron fanatic friend, has confessed “since JPB has open in Duke Street I haven’t been to Laduree in London only because Julien’s macaron are far better with a wider choice of flavour, they are cheaper and right here in Brighton. 27 Duke Street, BN1 1AG, Open 9.30am - 7pm, 01273 208997

Flavour of The Lanes

T

he Greene Room’s plush surroundings and quirky layout lends itself perfectly for smaller and more unique wedding receptions. Located on the first floor of the hugely popular Cricketers public house at Black Lion Street in The Lanes, The Greene Room is spread across three interlinked rooms that provide great areas for drinkers, dancers and diners alike! The location is ideal, being situated just a short walk from Brighton Registry Office and Brighton Beach, and at the heart of the vibrant Lanes area of Brighton City Centre. A stylish and classy décor of funky fuscia lighting combined with creams, purples and smooth browns help create a classically elegant ambience that is perfect for any celebratory event. The venue has its own self-contained bar and toilet facilities as well as music/live music facilities. The Greene Room can host up to 65 guests for a buffet/ drinks reception and up to 40 for a sit down wedding breakfast. The Cricketers & Greene Room have earned an envious reputation for its quality food in recent years. There are a number of wedding packages available; three buffet style packages

and two wedding breakfast packages. These wedding packages can be altered to the happy couple’s liking and a complete bespoke menu can be arranged with the Head Chef should there be very specific requests. With particular favourites such as mini fish and chips with tartar sauce, miniature burgers with smoked cheese on brioche baps and locally cured bacon and maple syrup sausage rolls all washed back with Roast tomato bloody Mary and celery shots, the buffet menus always receive excellent feedback. And if a Wedding Breakfast is the order of the day then you could expect something along the lines of Chicken liver and port parfait, pickled walnuts, balsamic jelly and croutons to start, with a main course of Pan fried South Downs fillet of beef with dripping chips, smoked bacon, baby onions and mushrooms with a brandy cream and finished off with Dark chocolate and amaretto fondant with pistachio ice cream and puree. Being situated above a beautiful public house, full of character and charm, has plenty of benefits for your guests. An interesting selection of Real Ales and wines are available as well as a good selection of well-known - Food & Drink|promotion -

beers, spirits and soft drinks. Packages often include drinks reception and Champagne deals, but once again drinks packages can be tailor made to meet the bride & bridegroom’s requirements. If you’re looking for a ‘place of interest’ for your wedding reception venue then The Greene Room also provides a wealth of historical memories. With copy letters from Graham Greene – the pub was immortalised by the author in his classic novel “Brighton Rock” and memorabilia concerning ‘Jack The Ripper’ who was known to use the premises – there is plenty for guests to look at and read should they wish for a short break from all of the frivolities. Upon booking your wedding reception at The Greene Room you would be introduced to a member of the management team who would act as the event co-ordinator for your big day ensuring everything runs smoothly, and they would be your point of contact for any prearrangements and on the day of course.
