A new design for living

T

here’s an old lady that sits on Brighton seafront all year round. She’s nearly eighty but doesn’t look it. She’s had a bit of work done over the years. In her youth she was the most glamorous creature on the south coast, but time catches up with us all and the cracks begin to show. In this case the cracks are in the concrete and the make up is some very expensive paint! Embassy Court is a Grade 2* listed building, designed by the architect Wells Coates, a leading modernist architect of the 1930s. And in its day the building was the most radical and the most luxurious creation the English seaside had ever seen.

‘In style it is unaffectedly of the New Age of Health and Light’ All flats have sea views overlooking Hove lawns and, in the words of the sales brochure ‘in style it is unaffectedly of the New Age of Health and Light - it makes no concession to any other period of architecture than that of today and tomorrow’. It wasn’t meant to fit in, it was all about showing off. The flats all had sun rooms so that you could enjoy the sea area but avoid the wind. The 9th and 10th floors were set back to create sun terraces. Allegedly these were the first penthouses in the UK! And all residents could use the sun deck on the top floor. If you ever get a chance to visit it, do so. The views are some of the best in the city. Originally the flats were heavily serviced, with a concierge, bell hops, and meals served in the flats by ‘well groomed waiters’.You could hire experienced servants for one shilling per hour and the six lifts all had private letter boxes which would be emptied several times a day by the good old GPO. With rents of between £125 and £500 per annum these were flats for the very wealthy. The current work on the building had been all about repainting and improving the windows. It’s a constant battle against the wind and the rain, as anyone who lives on the seafront knows. But when you walk past, listen carefully and you might just here the sound of wealthy socialites dancing the night away on the roof terrace, while the chauffeurs slept quietly in the basement, with the maids a safe distance away in their rooftop dormitory.

Investments – Going Green We are all becoming more aware of the impact we are having on the world. We are happily recycling, we donate money to charities to help nature and the environment and we are all concerned with global warming. Many people take this concern one step further by literally investing for the future of our planet; often known as ethical or green investment. Many of us have money in a personal pension, a bond, ISA or unit trust. The money will be invested in funds, managed by fund managers. The money will be pooled with that of other investors and used to by assets which should hopefully make your money grow. Normally, this will include shares in companies, in the UK and sometimes abroad.

But do you know where your money is invested? The companies in your investment funds could be dealing in gas, oil, arms, tobacco or pharmaceuticals; in essence you could be supporting companies which are going against your moral beliefs. It is always difficult to dig below the surface and find out, and it is even more difficult if you want to avoid investment into certain companies or areas of investments, especially as the investment will be changing as time goes on. How to invest ethically; Large life companies and fund managers know that people are concerned, and many have now launched “ethical funds”. These funds can put your mind at rest that you are investing in the right place. The funds can be accessed via an ISA, pension or other investments. How do the funds invest? There are two main ways; Negative screening: The fund manager would avoid investments in companies whose activities are deemed to be negative. This process is used by most UK ethical fund managers. Positive screening: The fund manager would invest in companies who are involved in projects with a positive social or environmental impact, things such as waste management or renewable energy. The manager would literally screen in companies who are doing good in the world. These funds are often known as green funds. How to access the funds; Depending which provider you have your investment with, they may have ethical funds available. If you have taken no advice for some time, a full review would be advisable, you should contact an Independent Financial Adviser who can contact your current providers and get all of the relevant information, then advising you on the best course of action.

Time for ‘red tape’ government to rethink landlord immigration plan As a Brighton solicitor who works closely with the city’s landlords, my phone lit up following the Queen’s Speech in which it was announced the Government would introduce legislation requiring landlords to be responsible for ensuring tenants are not illegal immigrants. Tackling immigration is of course a priority, but this so called policy has caused a great deal of concern. Why? The decision to make landlords responsible for checking tenant identities was not extensively trailed and there does not seem to have been very much consultation. Indeed, it came as a complete surprise to all letting agents to whom I have spoken. We are constantly told by this government that they are cutting red tape, but on the face of it, this policy will impose yet more arduous regulation on landlords and letting agents. Not for the first time we have a proposal that will actually generate more work for private companies and individuals, not less.

I am also not alone in thinking this is another example of the government delegating responsibility and liability for something that should be a function of Whitehall, not taxpayers. Landlords, via their letting agents, will be required to challenge identities which will involve searches and other legal requirements, all of which will take time and money with no recompense from central government. Surely it is the government’s job to vet illegal immigrants, not landlords. Much of the concern over this announcement has focused on how landlords and letting agents are expected to enforce it. Should they challenge all holders of non-EU passports? What happens if someone with an Australian passport on a long European stay applies for a six month let for example? Should he or she be treated as an illegal immigrant? We will wait to see the nature of legislation that may follow the Queen’s Speech but many feel this is simply a knee jerk reaction to those who are critical of the government’s current immigration enforcement. Many people in the industry are considering whether the government should be more consistent in following its own policy statements about making life easier for businesses, and therefore should rethink this proposal.

It has now become the main living area in most homes with space for eating, relaxing, entertaining, even working as well as a place for the preparation and cooking food. So it becomes important that the kitchen you choose is well-planned and fitted to accommodate all your needs.

All kitchen designs fall into two categories; traditional and modern. This means that the sink, cooker and fridge are positioned to form the points of a triangle. This will allow you to move easily between them. However, in open plan spaces you may want to exchange the working triangle in favour of ‘zoning’. Many kitchen designers prefer this method. Zoning involves setting up certain areas for different activities, by dedicating spaces and facilities for food preparation, cooking, dining, relaxing and entertaining. Combining all

Doors There are a wide variety of doors available from natural wood to faux timber as well as modern synthetics such as parapan - a strong solid acrylic for a hygienic, wipe clean finish.

Worktops Today’s worktops come in many different materials. Most popular worktops seem to be granite as it is tough and stain resistant. Many of our kitchen suppliers offer granite in a range of colours with a plain or patterned grain. Alternative to stone include: concrete, stainless steel, corian and timber.

Splash Backs Splash backs are vital in the kitchen. Tiles are still a favourite but if you prefer surface without joints consider using glass, stainless steel, composite or laminate up-stands and panels, alternatively if you prefer timber then well-sealed timber panels can look very appealing.

Appliances Fixtures and Fittings The most important factor to consider is whether the appliances are to be hidden or on show. Integrated fridges, freezers, dishwashers and washing machines can all be concealed behind matching cabinet doors while free-standing models can become a centrepiece in a more classical setting - like a high-tech fridge or an enamelled Aga. Good extraction is also essential in any kitchen. Other than the traditional canopy, the downdraught extraction is a more recent concept, built into the work-surface and rising up at the touch of a button when needed then back down into the worktop after use. When it comes to fixtures and fittings there are plenty of options to make life simpler, such as pop-up sockets, boiling water taps, even multiple re-cycling waste bins to help you to efficiently sort rubbish at source. The equipment you choose for your kitchen should suit your lifestyle, so it is important to take time to consider the newest fittings and appliances and decide which are right for you. Into the GARDEN

ith the arrival of glorious June, spring slips away and as summer gathers pace. June is the month when all the hard work you did before in the garden, begins to be rewarded. This is when the garden is truly in bloom. June brings with it the quintessential fragrant English rose. Although we have come to associate the enchanting rose with English summertime, many varieties flower until September or at least until the first frosts. So the beauty of this flower, can provide our gardens with colour and scent into autumn. Few plants bloom as much and as long as roses. There is a rose for every garden no matter how small. even a patio can have miniature roses in pots and there are an extensive range of ‘Patio roses’ many ideal for small gardens or pots. Other than these roses there are many other varieties to choose from; upright bushes, climbers or ramblers. All these come in a wide range of colour, size and shape. Climbing roses are particularly lovely for arches and pergolas or for an old wall. They also have larger flowers, and strong stems that make a good framework. It is good to remember that climbers re-flower whereas ramblers only flower once. Looking after your roses will reward you with not only beautiful, fragrant blooms but also add a touch of glamour to your entire garden. June is a good time to sprinkle fertiliser around the roots of roses for strong healthy growth and a good display of flowers. It is important to keep them well watered and given plenty of sun, at least six hours of sun a day. Another point to remember is that roses like to breathe so do not plant them too close to each other as this will result in the leaves getting mildew.

I

am struggling with the words to describe the new BMW M6 Convertible – bonkers is a word that readily comes to mind but in truth, it’s much more than that. It’s sexy, it’s sleek and it’s very, very fast. This flagship of the famous M series is a stunning piece of automotive engineering and l would need five pages to list the technological gadgets that lie beneath its beautiful skin. But to mention a few, the head up display that projects your speed and the road’s speed limit onto the windscreen is something that should be fitted to every car immediately; the reversing camera likewise; the i-Drive computer with a 10.2 inch screen is now much more user friendly and you no longer need a 2.1 from Oxbridge

to use it and oh, the noise. The exhaust note from this 4.4 litre twin turbo charged engine that produces 560 bhp and takes you from 0-60 in 4.3 seconds, made me grin like a 5 year old, and whilst belting through the Cuilfail Tunnel in Lewes, l actually turned round at the A27 and did it again – believe me, it’s addictive when the roofs down. The only time you might not want to repeat said manoeuvre, is when you foolishly glance down at the fuel gauge – a fixed grin this time but for totally different reasons. It boasts a combined consumption of 27.4 mpg but to get that l think you would have to drive like my granny. If you drive it as it is designed to be driven, and believe me the temptation is irresistible, then l think you could half that but as they say – if you

have to ask what it does to the gallon, you can’t afford it in the first place and at £99,020.00 for the standard model, never a truer word said. And before you ask, l don’t know what the £20 is for either but l bet if you turned up with cash, they would reduce it to ‘only’ £99,000! The car BMW kindly loaned me had over £12,000.00 worth of options, such as Merino Leather (£5635), M Sport seats (£1865) and 20 inch alloys (£1650) – you get where l am going with this – the car and the extras are all rather expensive but, and it is a huge but – it is a gob smacking car come fighter jet that accelerates fast enough to detach your retinas, corners on rails and did l mention the noise?

Is any car really worth the price of a small flat? Well, no of course not but then again yes. Would l rather have a dingy flat in Hanover or an amazing M6 – all l can say is that you can sleep in an M6 but you cannot drive a flat, no one will gawp at you in the window of your flat and neither will it make you smile like a manic child on Ritalin! I can’t afford £99,020.00, but having just searched the web, l found a transplant clinic in Mumbai offering £100,000 for healthy western kidneys – you have two kidneys but there is only one M6. Mumbai here l come…..

JAGUAR AWARD

For the first time, UK Volkswagen Beetle fans can order the legendary GSR model, some 40 years after the original Beetle GSR made its debut in the European market. Unveiled earlier in 2013, the Beetle GSR has a unique design and powerful 210 PS turbocharged engine. A real limited edition, just 3,500 of these cars will be made worldwide and 100 of them are being offered to UK customers. The GSR has a legendary predecessor, the ‘Yellow-Black Racer’ which was based on the Beetle 1303 S and made its debut 40 years ago.

It has been a remarkable week for Jaguar as two of its prestigious models - the Jaguar XF executive saloon and the Jaguar XJ luxury saloon - receive recognition from national newspaper The Daily Telegraph and specialist automotive publication Diesel Car. At the inaugural Telegraph Motoring Awards, the Jaguar XF beat competition from other premium car manufacturers to claim the Best Executive Car award, while the all-aluminium Jaguar XJ was named Best Luxury Car ahead of several more expensive competitor models.

GOOD WOOD REVIVAL

On the 50th anniversary of the first of his two Formula 1 World Championship victories, this year’s Goodwood Revival annual driver tribute will be to the legendary Scottish racer Jim Clark. A daily track parade at the Goodwood Motor Circuit will include a variety of Jim’s most famous cars. The track parade will feature a wealth of famous competition cars. Clark achieved success in single-seaters, sports, GT and saloon cars, and even turned his hand to rallying, setting fastest stage times on the 1966 RAC Rally in a Lotus-Cortina. The track parade will read like a shopping list of great racing cars from the 1960’s.

The BADGE is Back

M

orris, Triumph, Austin, Reliant – these are names of iconic British car manufacturers that many of us grew up with and that are sadly deceased, although it must be said that upon reflection, some of the models they produced were only ever destined for the dustbin of history. The Triumph Stag for example – a great looking car that was as reliable as a North Korean rocket launch, as rusty as a bucket of nails with a warranty that expired as you drove out of the showroom! But MG is a marque remembered fondly by most that owned one – who of a certain age group did not own or covet an MGBGT; or laugh hysterically as you shot up a hill climb in an MG Midget; or suddenly awoke to the enduring addiction of V8’s in the MGB-V8. Sadly, the company founded by Cecil Kimber in 1920 ran out of puff in 1988 and was sold to British Aerospace, then to BMW in 1994 and finally went bust on April 7th 2005. The final chapter of the story, or the first chapter in the new story, took shape in July 2005, when the Chinese Nanjing Automobile Group purchased the rights to the MG name and all remaining assets for £53 million and created MG Motor. So MG lives on to the joy of all British petrol heads but what of the first new model to carry that iconic badge, the MG6. The marketing blurb calls this a ‘sportsfastback’ and is in fact a rival to the Ford Focus and it’s kind and is currently available with a turbocharged 1.8 litre petrol engine with a five speed manual gearbox or a 1.9 diesel with a 6 speed box. It is quite a good looking car and l especially like the front

end that has quite an aggressive stance. Inside you are confronted by a well laid out interior with large clear dials and a very good colour screen that combines a sat nav and a multi-media interface. There is good legroom both front and back, considerably more than the Golf or Focus and a 60/40 split rear bench that offers plenty of load space. The boot will take 472 litres which is again far more than its rivals. The let down in the driver’s seat, and l admit it’s a small niggle, is the daft handbrake. Obviously a ‘cool’ design feature but it is an odd shape and not at all easy to grab without pinching your fingers and there’s also a silly cup holder that shoots out sideways and really takes two hands to operate – design over function, me thinks! Standard equipment includes stability control, front and side airbags, A/C, electric windows, alloy wheels, deadlocks and a fully integrated stereo that will make thieves lives a tad more difficult. The MG6 is quite a spirited drive and is stable in corners although it does suffer a tad from turbo lag but give it a boot and off it goes with a smooth gear change and impressive stability although a little too much wind noise for my liking. It cannot be classified as a hot hatch but is certainly a well sorted family hatchback. Economy is reasonable if not stunning with 37.7 mpg and a top speed limited to 120 mph. The entry price is £16,995 and that’s a lot of car for the money when you consider what other full size hatchbacks cost. There is one thing that might propel the MG6 to the front of your mind when buying – the badge. When asked what you drive, there is little pride in answering

Skoda or Ford but stating that you have an MG certainly brings a little pride to the voice. It’s been a long time since anyone could say that they have a new MG, built and designed in the UK, and with the range comprising the MG6, Magnette and the all-new MG3 launching this week at the Shanghai Motor Show, love it or hate it, the badge is back. T

he summer has arrived. We are on Day two of our first home match versus last season’s Champions Warwickshire and unfortunately still in the field. It got me thinking about what lay ahead this season. I was very fortunate to play for 19 seasons as a professional cricketer and play on some magnificent rounds such as Lords, The Oval, Trent Bridge etc. But I must admit as nice as those grounds are, I used to really enjoy playing on the out-grounds in their Festival weeks. Some of my favourite out-grounds were Scarborough, Colwyn Bay, Cheltenham College and Eastbourne. And then there was Southend and Colchester. I recall those two as I have many memories where my lack of height was constantly reminded to me and the fact that the nation of my birth - Wales - had an unhealthy interest in sheep was always mentioned. It was always a red-hot atmosphere when you went to an Essex ground that’s for sure Well our lads, as I write, will visit our two Festivals of Cricket over six weeks, at Horsham for five days to play Somerset in a four-day match and Kent in the YB40 Match on the Sunday. They will then move on to the best out ground I’ve played on at Arundel on June 12th for a massive derby match versus Surrey and a YB40 match v Northamptonshire. One of my finest matches in a Sussex shirt was at Arundel during our 2003 Championship year when we beat Essex. Tim Ambrose, who is in the Warwickshire team today, and myself had two 150-plus run partnerships in the game

which saw us over the line. There were always happy memories at Arundel for me. I used to do my warm-downs in the Black Rabbit over a Budweiser or two after the game. No ice baths in those days! I thought I’d share a really funny experience I had as a Glamorgan player back in our 1997 Championship year at Colwyn Bay. Robert Croft, our off spinner was picked for England and Dean Cosker our left-arm spinner was picked for England under-19s. So we had a massive match on a potential turning wicket without a spinner and with a Championship to be won. A left-arm spinner called Phil North (who had been on the Glamorgan staff for about five years) was playing club cricket for Swansea and was summoned by our captain Matt Maynard to play the match. Out of obscurity! What an opportunity. It was real Roy of the Rovers stuff. He could get a Championship medal! So we all travelled up to North Wales the day before the match and arrived for a net at 2pm. The Welsh newspapers and TV were all over Phil at nets. There was quite a bit of rain in the air and the forecast was terrible for the next day. It was decided that we would all go out for a couple of beers at the local pub called the Liverpool Arms. After three beers we all started to make our way back to the hotel apart from Phil who was cooking on Gas Mark 5 by this time. We turned up at the ground at 9.30pm as it was bucketing with rain all night and the umpires decided the match would start late

at 11.30am. There was no sign of Phil. Nobody could get hold of him and the media were on the case as you’d expect. Phil rocked up at about 11.15pm and was in a bad way. He looked as if he’d gone ten rounds with Mike Tyson! The local brew had really taken its toll on him. Needless to say Matt had to take the tough decision to send Phil home with his tail between his legs. Not before he had to endure an absolute hiding from the media. When he returned for the next match for Swansea the sympathy of a cricket dressing room was in full force. His team mates had put a giant alarm clock on a string on his clothes peg! Anyway back to good old Sussex by the Sea. Please support these Festivals, they really are special occasions and I know the lads love playing in front of a big crowd. Me?? elcome to my first column for Absolute Brighton, I shall be contributing a monthly column on sports related issues, and I hope you find these of interest. I have been campaigning for a number of months in support of the Amex Stadium’s bid to host matches at the 2015 Rugby World Cup. I corresponded with the game’s governing bodies and met with RFU representatives in Parliament I was therefore delighted at the recent announcement that the Amex would take its place as a host venue alongside Twickenham and the Olympic Stadium. The Rugby World Cup is the third biggest sporting event in the world, and I am delighted that Brighton will play a part in a monumental occasion when the tournament comes to England in 2015. It is especially pleasing because the Amex faced very tough competition from some more established stadia. I know from my various letters and meetings that the fantastic facilities available at the venue and the undoubted attraction of Brighton and Hove as a host city were very apparent to selectors. The announcement is great news for the city, and for the future of rugby in the region. I know that my constituents will be looking forward to a great occasion in 2015.

ith Sussex hosting the traditional international event at Eastbourne, the Aegon Championships, as part of the grasscourt build-up to Wimbledon, my mind wondered if London-On-Sea could muscle its way back onto the tour calendars once more by recreating the tournament it developed in its own cool, friendly, vibrant image before the event’s demise after 22 years in 2000. Let me tell you a story from back in the day which illustrates the vibe I want to bring back with the event. There I was with bunch of journalists and sat amongst us was Steffi Graf.We were upstairs in English’s Fish Restaurant and Oyster Bar in East Street.Steffi was happy to be there. She was a big music fan and she and I chatted about bands of the time as diverse as Simple Minds and Inspiral Carpets. There was never any aloofness from the tennis superstar, no pedestal to climb down from. She was relaxed, easy to talk to and genuinely interested in what you had to say (even in my case). The late George Hendon ran it (and the Eastbourne event, as it happens) and was responsible for creating such a feel. The players loved him. Steffi was a special favourite and won the tournament a record six times. But Martina Navratilova – a two time champion – and Chris Evert – who collected a hat-trick of crowns – enjoyed coming back year after year, popping in to the tournament officerwhere George’s wife Eileen and daughter Nola would be dispensing confections of Quality Street from its famous box.The crème de la crème had a ball in the city which provided fun, good food and the sea besides tempting toffees and chocolate and tennis. It would be a tall order to find another person with George Hendon’s charisma and, indeed, to convince the powers-that-be that it would be worth finding a slot for Brighton and Hove somewhere on the professional tennis bandwagon. But who would have thought the city would be able to stage matches in the Rugby World Cup or welcome the Tour de France, with Lance Armstrong, in the 1990s? If you don’t dream nothing happens.

Inside the Chamber What are we proud of?

A

t the recent Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce Centenary Summit, I was struck by the level of pride people have in their city. Everyone was talking about how we do business differently in Brighton, and people were very taken by the theme of mixing business and pleasure. It became a central theme of the day, and there were many comments on how they enjoyed doing business here. This has made me think about why there’s a special pride in Brighton and Hove. Perhaps it’s because so many people here have come here, rather than been born here. We did a quick poll at one of the Chamber Big Debates recently to see how many people in the audience were originally from the city – only about a third of the business people there were born here. Many of us, including myself, have chosen to live and work here, rather than being here because of an accident of birth. Maybe we love more what we’ve actively chosen.

I’ve been thinking about the differences in doing business here compared with other cities. It does seem that business people in Brighton are less concerned with making mega money than in other places – many people are more interested in earning enough to give them financial security, and in creating a good place to work for themselves and their employees. I have far more conversations about the social impact of business in Brighton than I do when I go to other cities. People here are definitely interested in what happens as a result of their business, whether they’re running a full-on social enterprise or just a regular business. And business owners in Brighton are more focussed on having a healthy relationship with work, whether that’s doing work that they love, or spending time on the other aspects of their lives, or both. And of course, there’s a lot going on in the city, so it’s not difficult to get involved outside of your regular work. The 60+ business people who volunteer their time to help run the Chamber are a good example of this. None of us have to do that, but we

enjoy getting involved and helping out, being part of something bigger than ourselves and helping to make events like the Centenary Summit happen. Some of the businesses in Brighton are quite different as well. There are lots of people doing all sorts of things I’ve never heard of before. The attendee list at the summit was a good indication of this – where else would you find a guitar inventor (Jon Hirsch) an ethical supermarket (Ruth and Amy Anslow) and a woman who makes children’s clothes in black only (Jenny Barrett) all in the same room. Part of the pride in Brighton, and feeling that we do business differently here comes from the fact that the city is home to many unique and unusual businesses. Eight leading Brighton businesses, three major titles, four trade organisations and one of the most iconic and fun venues in the city have come together to create a competition which acknowledges the diversity and uniqueness of our City and celebrates those companies, organisations and individuals who really build the Brighton brand. The sponsors include Allied Irish Bank, Brighton & Hove Jobs.com, Cardens Accountants, The Treatment Rooms, The Montefiore Hospital, The British Engineerium, Qualifa and The Eventa Group. The list of finalists reflects Brighton’s broad range of businesses and includes vets, recruitment sites, tea shops, bars, training companies, dental hygienists and food festivals – as well as such iconic sights as the Pier, the Marina and the Amex. Commenting on the shortlist, Tony Mernagh, chair of the judges and executive director of the economic partnership said: “The entries seem to cover every aspect of business life from creative digital services to hospitality and the night-time economy. Few other places in the country can boast such a range of businesses let alone the quality that we have seen on this year’s shortlist.” The awards will be presented by Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley at Horatio’s Bar on Brighton Pier on Thursday 6th June 2013. The event is set to be the biggest celebration of Brighton business and will be attended by our local MP, Caroline Lucas, the Chief Exec of the council, Penny Thompson, and the Council Leader Jason Kitkat.
