The Royal Speech
Queen of Brighton Caraline Brown wears the crown and addresses her loyal subjects If I were the Queen of Brighton? Oh what fun we would all have. Once I have dealt with child poverty and world peace I would sprinkle some fairy dust on the feet of the Albion players and whisk them into the Premiership. And then change the name of the best day of the week, Friday, to Gayday! The city would be cleaner, bigger, better – in fact a Greater Brighton with collaboration between the various towns along the seafront. I’m sure we would have a far greater chance of winning government grants to really improve where we live if we all had collective bargaining power. For example, we could turn the Hove Station area into a vibrant mix of cinemas, restaurants, homes, offices and open spaces. And in order to get to and from this brave new city, I will provide a quality transport system that gets us all up and down from the metropolis - and make the platforms longer. The trains could have
more carriages and carry more people! In fact, let’s have a few more trains with buffet cars, and smoking rooms, and French classes, and nurseries! You get the idea. But before I make any decrees I shall be calling on my trusty supporters and handing out a few knighthoods. It’s about time the city recognised some of the wonderful folks who work tirelessly to put Brighton on the UK map and yet receive little or no recognition, or financial support in return. The Brighton and Hove Food Festival, for example, attracts thousands of people to the city twice a year. It’s run by a bunch of volunteers and makes no profit – and yet the city insists on charging them for event space which would otherwise be fallow. I will introduce a community market place where all sorts of events can be staged simply for the love of putting on something that is fun and attracts visitors (money) to the city. People have a tendency to forget that Brighton runs on the tourist economy.
Reduce the parking fees? No. Just do away with them altogether.
Yes it’s all down to money and so under the new Caraline Brown regime there will be simply loads of it. I really like the idea of a Board of Directors who sit and take applications from individual and groups who want to try out new ideas and ways of doing things. The Folly Lolly Panel. If people are prepared to give up their time to try and make something happen then the Queen of Brighton will ensure they have a year and a day to make it happen. And if they fail? Off with their heads! Another of my working parties would consider some means of connecting the two opposite ends of the city – the King Alfred and the Marina. Maybe we should bring back the tuc tucs and charge a fiver to jump on and off at any point along the sea front? Or maybe we should introduce bicycle rickshaws? And where is the bike hire scheme? We’ve had Boris’ Bikes. How about Kari’s cycles? Many years ago the idea of a monorail was discussed. Speaking as someone with fond memories of Butlins at Minehead where I rode the monorail every day, I think it would make a brilliant attraction for the city. Talking of communications, considering that Brighton is meant to be one of the most wired cities in the country, we do seem to be seriously lacking in the free wi fi access department! Leave it to me. I’ll sort it. But before we get the city-wide free Wi-Fi
I am going to set up a Brighton Speakers Corner where everyone can bring their soap box and stand up and be heard. While I have the chance I want to get some artwork in here. I rather like the idea of some big bold pieces erected out at sea that can only be seen when the tide is low. And no I would not dismantle the West Pier. Never throw anything away. You never know when you might need it.
Shall I say that a bit louder? WE NEED TO ATTRACT TOURISTS NOT FIND WAYS OF PUTTING THEM OFF COMING HERE!
104
And finally parking. Reduce the parking fees? No. Let’s just do away with them altogether. I subscribe to the European school of parking which is Park Where You Bloody Like providing you are not affecting anyone else – in which case your car is towed and crushed. Yes I know we need the revenue but this is a new world entirely where Money Is No Object and we need to attract the tourists not drive them away with exorbitant parking fees and 20mph driving limits. Shall I say that a bit louder? WE NEED TO ATTRACT TOURISTS NOT FIND WAYS OF PUTTING THEM OFF COMING HERE! So before I am deposed (that’s next month I reckon) I am going to set up my own political party – the Best of Brighton party – the BOBs! I’ve had enough of national party politics. I think it is about time that local issues were the main determinant on the agenda when it comes to choosing our representatives in Council. All too frequently this city has been held back by political partisanship, putting the party before the city. But no longer! We need a council that is made up of independents who put BRIGHTON FIRST! Join me and become a BOB! Caraline Brown is the MD of Midnight Communications. www.midnight.co.uk

Are you a Brightonian? Or do you just live here? Stephen Grant, our resident columnist, is Brighton born and bred and he can spot a newcomer a mile away. Will you pass Stephen’s test on page 35? It was with considerable relief that I passed and I can now say I am officially a Brightonian (without being classified as being TOO Brighton). Failing this could have prompted an early resignation from my editorship. Luckily I HAVE debated the contrasting merits of Uncle Sams and Grubbs, I still call our remaining active sea structure the Palace Pier, I do correct people who refer to the North Lanes and I have decided it would be a good idea to chase a beer with a sickly sweet Tuaca. Shamefully I have yet to trek across to the Chattri - maybe when it gets a bit warmer. Take the Grant test to establish your local credentials and no cheating please. It is almost the perfect test, but it misses the most important question: Do you read Absolute Brighton every month? How can anyone possibly claim to be a true Brightonian if they don’t read the city’s premier magazine? Ian Trevett Editor

SPRING INTO THE NEW SEASON WITH THE COLOUR EXPERTS AT TREVOR SORBIE BRIGHTON The Spring/Summer 2013 shows were full of monochrome 60’s inspired fashion and hair followed suit with back-to-basics, wearable and 60s retro-glam styles dominating. Three key trends that really emerged from the catwalks for the coming season are; the side parting, the beehive and the low ponytail. Side partings were big news at Chloe, Valentino, Marc Jacobs and Calvin Klein, who all showed deep side partings where hair was swept low across the forehead. Whether hair was worn up or down, it had a real 60s vibe, with volume added across the crown. A look that can be achieved with any type of hair – the side parting is the one to choose for on-trend tresses in 2013. Going a step further in terms of retro-glam were the fabulous Tom Ford and Jean Paul Gaultier whose models wore glamorous and glossy beehives for a full on 60s revival. Louis Vuitton combined a strong monochrome look topped with beehives adorned with ribbons and for a more low maintenance take on This month, Anna Chapman, award-winning Art Director at Trevor Sorbie Brighton gives us the inside track on the hottest hair trends for Spring/Summer 2013 and a sneak peek of what we can expect to see in Autumn/Winter 2013.
this trend Moschino runway models wore a sexy half beehive. Simple, no fuss low-slung ponytails gave models an easy elegance at Christian Dior, Mulberry and Christopher Kane, where hair was anything but prim and proper. A really wearable, low maintenance look, the low ponytail for Spring/Summer 2013 is achievable with few products and even less time. airy movement. Hair at Topshop Unique was all about the middle parting and a 90’s brit-pop grunge-style look that perfectly complemented the laid-back luxe fashion they sent down the runway. To achieve this style, make a rough middle parting, damp the hair down and apply mousse at the crown to give it root lift (L’Oreal Professionnel Volume Riche Mousse and Techni Art Pli Thermofixing Spray). Dry the crown of the air using your fingers in a small circle motion as if you are massaging, this will give the hair body. Lightly back comb for body and texture so the result is the perfect 90s Brit-pop a la Kate Moss look. To finish the hair, use dry shampoo and hairspray to hold.

or me one of the most stylish and fascinating periods of the 20th century has to be the Art Deco age (1910-39). Its enduring popularity is due to the fact that it has always been seen as a glamorous style. This is a style that sits well within our homes and lives today in the 21st century. The term Art Deco came from the 1925 “Exposition Internationale des Art Decoratifs et Industrials Modernes” in Paris. This exhibition attracted all of the prominent artists, architects, craftsmen and designers of the period and showed their works. The exhibition promoted a bright new future for everyone after the misery of the First World War and the great depression that followed. Paris became the hub of Art Deco style. This was a time of optimism and wealth. It was the age of Jazz, women’s right to vote, the introduction of the radio and the first transatlantic flight. This period also gave birth to ground-breaking artistic movements such as cubism, impressionism and surrealism. Art Deco style is easily recognized by its bold lines. This style was considered radical compared to previous styles. The designs were grand, colourful, geometric and very streamlined. The use of unexpected materials to make furniture such as mirrored glass, ebony, chrome and lacquer gave furniture the ‘wow’ factor. Art Deco interiors were sparkling, bright, modern, functional, exotic and extravagant. Deco design influenced every field, from art and architecture to jewellery, fashion and transportation the movement was truly international.
“Art Deco was the style that bought glamour to the masses.” Art Deco was a revolution in its time. Today its legacy continues in our homes, architecture and fashion design. Below are some places you may like to visit that feature good examples of Art Deco architecture and design which are all located in central London. The Age of Opulence Recreate the Glamour of ‘Deco Style’ Art Deco style is elegant without being too fussy. Achieving this look in our homes today is not a difficult task, all it takes is a little imagination.
I hope these few ideas will provide you with some guidelines to understanding what Art Deco styling is and how you can make it work in your own home.
Take time to look around your local second-hand shops as there are many pieces of genuine Art Deco furniture to be found. Look out for furniture with straight edges, curved fronts and simple construction which are typical of this period.
Mirrored Accessories
Lloyd Loom furniture is very stylish and looks good in the Art Deco home. Anything from chairs, laundry baskets and ottomans to bedside cabinets can be found locally in charity shops or even on e-bay. Lloyd Loom furniture bought second-hand can be refreshed with a light coat of paint and will add a touch of 30’s glamour to your home. The great thing about Art Deco styling is that it works in any setting and is perfect for our modern living spaces. Not only is the furniture beautifully crafted, but is also hugely collectible.
Brighton & Hove ART DECO Fair The fair is held at Hove Town Hall and is the longest running Art Deco venue in the UK.
Tel: 01273 292 910 www.artdecofairs.co.uk
Mirrors were frequently used in Art Deco design, from mirrored cabinets to lamp bases. Today mirrored furniture and accessories have become popular again and have been reproduced to look like the originals of the Deco era.
Animal Print As travel became more popular global influences affected the Art Deco interior. Since African Safari’s were the thing to do, animal skins and animal prints became important in the decoration of the Deco home. Try splashes of animal print in the form of throws, cushions or rugs, Zebra or cheetah print being the most popular.
Lighting To keep in with this period choose wall lights in a fan or bowl shape. If you are looking for side lamps choose bases with figurines. Add a sparkling chandelier or two and your Art Deco home is nearly complete!
Cocktails Let the 30’s Hollywood glamour filter into your home with a cocktail party. With the rise of cocktail hour came an increase in elegantly designed barware. No Art Deco home was complete without a cocktail cabinet. The cocktail hour meant people could dress glamorously like the stars of the silver screen and entertain in their homes.
Colour The Art Deco period had a very specific colour scheme. Some recommended colours to use in your Deco home should include: creme, glossy black, yellow, red or green. If using wallpaper choose symmetrical patterned paper and use it on the accent wall rather than covering the whole room.
Accessories Accessorise using framed art prints depicting jazz, travel or advertising. Use mirrors with chrome or silver frames to enhance the interior of your home. A selection of geometrically patterned china will also sit well in your Deco home.

voke the grandeur of the 1930’s in your own home with a few statement pieces. Or invest in one key item such as a ‘Clarice Cliff’ creation, Lalique glassware, a bronze figurine, or a piece of Deco furniture. Today there is a huge demand for Art Deco collectibles, especially furniture, that can be bought for a reasonable price locally. Look for furniture with clean lines which are typical of the Deco period. Classic Art Deco pieces can sit comfortably in our homes alongside modern, contemporary pieces of today.

xamples of Art Deco architecture can still be admired all over the world and you only have to look around to see the influence of Deco style right here in Sussex at some of our illustrious Art Deco buildings, symbols of a by-gone era.
The Grand Ocean Hotel (Saltdean) The Grand Ocean Hotel was designed by Richard Jones, the architect behind the Saltdean Lido. The hotel opened its doors in 1938 and was popular with film stars and wealthy holiday makers. At the outbreak of World War II the hotel became a training centre for fire-fighters. When the war ended Billy Butlin bought the hotel for £250,000 and fully restored the building, it then became a very popular Butlins resort hotel with tourists. In 1999 the hotel was sold and renamed ‘Grand Ocean Hotel’ and it remained open until 2005. Today the building is simply called the ‘Grand Ocean’ and it has been converted into stunning seaside apartments by ‘Explore Living’ developers. I went to see the building out of curiosity and I have to say I was truly impressed, the foyer is absolutely magnificent and the staircase is simply stunning.
Saltdean Lido (Saltdean) Swimming was regarded as being a highly fashionable sport in the 30’s and so it became important to have a Lido in any seaside resort. The Lido was designed for activities around water with areas for eating and sunbathing. The Saltdean Lido offers a perfect example of the Art Deco style and was the only Lido ever to be featured in the Design museum in London. In 1958 Billy Butlin attempted to buy the Lido in order to re-develop it, but this was opposed by the locals and rejected by the ministry of housing. In 1998 the Lido was once again re-opened, the refurbishment was only possible due to contributions given by both public and private sectors. At present the Brighton and Hove City Council has stepped in to take ownership of this Grade II listed building. The architect Sir Terence Conran who owns the Design Museum in London has been given the task of returning the Saltdean Lido to its former glory through his architectural practice in Brighton.
Embassy Court (Brighton) A piece of our Art Deco history stands proudly facing the sea, with its curved corners and ocean liner type design, it is 12 storeys high with covered balconies and splendid views of the ocean and promenades. The grade II listed building owes its architectural grandeur to the Canadian architect Wells Coates. In the past it was a magnet to both the rich and the famous, and was home to comedian Max Miller, ballet dancer Rex Harrington and writer Keith Waterhouse. Unfortunately it fell into a state of disrepair throughout the 1980s and 90s. Thankfully a consortium formed by residents and owners, with the assistance of the Conran Group, started restoration in 2004 and the building has now been restored to its former glory as an Art Deco treasure, not only for Brighton but for the whole British Architectural culture.

It’s Festival Time This month Brighton hosts three culinary festivals Brighton Food Festival’s ‘Spring Harvest’ Thursday 28 March - Wednesday 3 April 2013
F
ood festival organisers are expecting their biggest ever weekend this Easter with three anchor events, the Big Sussex Market, Live Food Show and Children’s Food Festival, taking over New Road, Royal Pavilion Gardens and Jubilee Square for an
epic two days of great food and drink. The Big Sussex Market on Good Friday 29 and Easter Saturday 30 March will see stalls featuring 80 local growers, producers and restaurateurs selling a huge range of great food and drink. The event regularly attracts 40-50,000 foodies to the heart of Brighton, and with the addition of the free Children’s Food Festival outside the Royal Pavilion featuring composting activities from PHS Wastetech, food bravery challenges from Wagamama, and a host of other fun foodie things to do for the little ones. Top chefs from across Sussex including Andrew MacKenzie of Drakes, Sam Metcalfe of Sevendials and Jeremy Ashpool of Jeremy’s Restaurant will be preparing some of their favourite dishes on the Live Food Show stage for festival goers to taste and enjoy. Over the weekend there will also be the finals of the Great Brighton Ice Cream Competition which has been running in association with Rockinghorse and Boho Gelato across local primary schools and also the finals of the Brighton Bake Off which has seen local businesses baking for charity. The Live Food Show stage will also feature Mixology Group’s Mini Mix Off cocktail and the festival’s new Extreme Food Challenge. On Bank Holiday Monday 1 April the festival returns to Royal Pavilion Gardens for the Alice in Wonderland themed Easter Egg hunt raising money for Rockinghorse, followed by a free World Food Trail in the afternoon. The last port of call on the trail is the Brighton Fish Festival outside Moshimo in Bartholomew Square, where a host of stalls, demos and free children’s activities will be on offer to raise awareness of local fish and seafood, and issues around sustainability.” The festival also sees the welcome return of Make Your Case and Bitter & Twisted, the punk wine and beer tasting events at the Hotel du Vin. Dr Belinda Kemp of Plumpton College will also be running a wine Supertasters afternoon at myhotel. The Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival is a twice yearly celebration of great local produce, hosted in April and September. www.brightonfoodfestival.com Paula Seager is the founder of Natural PR. www.naturalpr.biz 49

Presenter, author and former pop star Janey Lee Grace will be opening the 5th VegfestUK Brighton at The Hove Centre on Saturday and Sunday March 16th and 17th. The event is free to the public and large crowds are expected as Janey is joined by a host of other celebrities visiting the show. Janey will be opening the show at 11am on Saturday, followed by a talk about healthy living at 12. CBeebies presenter Sarah Jane Honeywell is helping out with kids activities on the Sunday, and ex Emmerdale actress Roxy Shahidi will host her own yoga workshop Roxy’s Bite Size Yoga Workshop, suitable for beginners as well as the more advanced. And for some light-hearted relief, comedians Andrew O’Neill and Sara Pascoe will be performing both days at 5pm, along with comics Joey Brannigan, Chris Dhondee, Dominic Berry and James Hately. There are around a dozen musicians playing over the weekend, including Brighton-based musician Tensheds, and guitarist Paul Carella. And for the first time at Brighton there is a cinema with a number of eco friendly films showing across the weekend. Add in a programme of workshops, talks and cookery demos, a full line-up of kids activities on Sunday, and over 125 stalls full of food, produce, bodycare, fashion and accessories, clothing, campaigns merchandise and information about all aspects of the plant based lifestyle, and there’s plenty for the whole family to enjoy at VegfestUK Brighton. Admission is completely free to the public and the show is open from 11am - 6pm. Donations are welcome. More details about the event can be found on their website www.brighton.vegfest.co.uk VegFest photos by Glyn Ridgers

ate January, it’s a wet and windy Monday night in Derby. I’m up there to give a talk in their wonderful library, and was looking forward to
a good dinner afterwards, but that had proved to be a bit of a problem. Every restaurant I wanted to eat at was closed on Monday. They were also closed on Tuesday, so clearly Derby society’s fine dining patterns are different to ours in Brighton… Then to my delight a man who answered the phone at Masa, to which I had been highly recommended, took my booking. I warned him my talk would not finish until around 9pm and I would be along at 9.30pm with my guest, vicar turned author Andrew Deberry, who was driving 100 miles to meet me. No problem the man at the other end assured me, confidently. So after a trudge through the elements and some seriously ugly parts of Derby I was somewhat nonplussed to arrive outside a handsome building with a very pretty courtyard, signed Masa, to find wrought iron gates padlocked and not a light on anywhere. Inspecting their details with a torch, I read “open Wed-Sun”. So who was the dingbat who took my reservation??? But there was a silver lining. A few blocks away we stumbled across the very pretty

Never fear though, the new owners of the club have organised a weekly night called Therapy, that features all the best deep/tech and groovy house music with some old skool classics thrown in for good measure. WHAT’S ON HOLDING ON TO HOPE The Jubilee Library is hosting a dynamic exhibition of portraits of celebrities whose lives have been touched by friends or family with ovarian cancer, in association with Ovacome (The Ovarian Cancer Support Network). Each celebrity is holding a photo of a person special to them who has had the disease and below each picture is a cameo story of their relationship. Ovacome’s patron, the actress Jenny Agutter, TV presenters Carol Vorderman and James May and socialite Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, are among those featured. The exhibition, the creation of photographer Andy Scaysbrook, made its debut last March at London’s Menier Gallery, with plaudits from the press. This year, the Holding onto Hope exhibition will be taking place at Brighton’s Jubilee Library in the famous North Laine part of the city. Come along and meet the Ovacome team and supporters and have the chance to purchase a hard copy of the Holding onto Hope collection at the special price of £5. March 18th-31st.
BRIGHTON AT GLYNDEBOURNE 30 amateur performers from Brighton will appear on the main stage at Glyndebourne opera house on March 7, in the world premiere of Imago. Glyndebourne’s latest community opera is set in virtual reality with a cast of 90 amateur performers recruited via open auditions from across the South East. Participants range in age from teenagers to those in their 70s and they perform alongside five professional opera singers in a project designed to develop amateur talent. With 27 million pets in the UK and 1 in 2 households owning a pet, we are clearly a nation in love with our pets but with the recent results, PetsPyjamas.com commissioned a survey to find out just how much we care for our pets. Weddings
Our Sussex Wedding Jenny Rayner & Alex Eichner Kidbrooke Park Mansion Forest Row We MET through my sister. We liked each other from the first time we met but waited to get together due to an age difference. We bonded over a mutual love of martial arts and got on very well. We went on holiday to Portugal on our 5th anniversary of us officially getting together. On that evening, after having watched dolphins swim in the sea that day, we went to the local beach, had dinner in a restaurant on the beach and then took a walk in the moon light, where Alex read me a poem he wrote ending in WILL YOU MARRY ME? I did have suspicions a few months before we went, as we weren’t sure if we’d get to go on that specific date, and Alex was making it very clear it had to be that date, so it made me wonder. But then he didn’t let another clue slip so I thought maybe not. When the poem neared the end and Alex’s hand went into his pocket I almost couldn’t believe it but then he got down on one knee and asked. I obviously, very happily, said yes! 28

Max, my PONY, was at the wedding as he means a lot to me. I’ve had him about 13 years now (although he was on loan for some of that while I was at university). I keep him where I work (IFEAL which does equine assisted therapy) so I see him nearly every day. He’s like a member of the family and I really wanted him there. It took me a while to think of how to get him involved, but then we found the perfect role for him - Ring Bearer! He’s got a lovely nature so I knew I could trust him to perform his role and carry our rings to us around his neck. He was also very good for the photos, although it was a good thing I didn’t mind a couple of hoof prints on my dress!
The CAKE was made by an old friend of mine. I had seen her amazing cakes on facebook so I thought I’d ask her. Her name is Lucy Whatford. We got married at KIDBROOKE PARK MANSION, Forest Row. We wanted somewhere which was big enough and had outside space too. My husband’s mother works at the school as a teacher so we had a nice connection.Very beautiful too, we didn’t worry too much about spending money on decoration as the building and ground are already stunning. They also didn’t mind having a horse there! Alex’s SUIT was from Broadleys of East Grinstead. Very nice people and had a beautiful range of suits. I got my SHOES from Suitables in Lingfield. Had tried a few other places with no luck and found a lovely pair in that shop, looking forward to having them dyed black so I can wear them out! It was also where my sister got her shoes for her wedding so I knew they had a nice range.
We spent our HONEYMOON in St Lucia - a wedding gift from Alex’s parents. We went to the Coconut Bay Spa Hotel. It was a great place, we met some lovely people and relaxed in the sun. Just what we needed after organising a wedding! Miss the cocktails by the pool now though! I brought a TIARA from Emma Tindley and borrowed a NECKLACE from George Knight Jewellers, East

Grinstead. That shop is also where the engagement ring and both our wedding rings were bought, that’s why they allowed us to borrow a beautiful piece for the day. My DRESS was from Emma Tindley - her boutique is in East Grinstead. I went to a couple of the other bridal shops and had found one dress I liked, but when I went into Emma’s shop it wasn’t just a beautiful dress I got, but also a great experience, as Emma is very lovely. I found my perfect dress in there and didn’t look anywhere else after! 59

Education
Do independent schools suffer from an ‘inverted snobbery’? This month’s debate focuses on the comments made by Mrs Frances King when she announced she was to leave her position of headmistress at Roedean. She said, “It is quite hard work to continue to be always on the negative side of public opinion. “We are putting our heart, soul and effort into this provision. We are making sure we have got a good amount of money put into bursaries and, as much as we can afford in our situation, we are trying to ensure we are
widening access. But it is difficult providing top quality education whilst feeling that the whole country is against you” Vicky Tuck, former headmistress of Cheltenham Ladies’ College, said she had been made to feel that running a private school in England was “slightly immoral”. Do Independent Schools face a form of inverted snobbery? Has it always been like this? Is it getting better or do the schools still suffer from a negative perception in society?
Mr Chris Holt
Head of RS & Philosophy, St Christopher’s Hove The most regrettable aspect of the current pedagogical slanging match is that the welfare of children is being eclipsed by adult prejudices. Many of those on either side have not set foot in an independent school for a decade, an immeasurable epoch in education. As with any debate on schooling, the assumption is that having been to one once gives you a trenchant viewpoint. Whilst there is demand for independent education, it will exist. What we need to focus upon is the positive influence on educational practice as a whole. By their very nature, independent schools have greater budgets at their disposal and can take greater risks with them. Independent schools have a licence to take risks in the pursuit of excellence, always with the knowledge that an initiative that proves vastly unpopular with the parent body has the
power to drive the school out of business. In a medical metaphor, the NHS may reject as unproven or too costly something subsequently shown by the private sector to be highly effective, leading to its adoption for the benefit of all. My school invested heavily in Google Cloud technology, introducing Chrome Books for the older children, with a truly revolutionary effect on teaching and learning. Effecting this radical change within six months is not something many state schools would be willing to do financially, or without reams of evidence that the initiative would work. The freedom to pursue new ideas, whether it is ICT based or the recent concept of “dayboarding”, is the great asset of independent education. The sharing of resources and facilities will
never create the true equality some seek; it is in the pursuit and sharing of ideas that enrich education as a whole that the independent sector has its role in 21st century education.

Mrs Ann Aughwane
Headmistress, Burgess Hill School for Girls
There cannot be many institutions or occupations that have not come in for criticism from the public or press at some time or another. Traditionally politicians, traffic wardens, ‘taxmen’, insurance salesmen, and more have been disparaged by those who have never undertaken these roles and who choose to vent their frustrations, envy or dislike of the ‘stereotype’. Doctors, once universally highly respected in their communities, now feel the wrath of the press and bloggers. These things do affect the morale of those under attack. It is sad that the culture of criticism and envy has perhaps grown as technology has enabled comments to be voiced publicly, with ease, often anonymously; personal opinions have gained greater currency regardless of whether they are illinformed or not. It is a fact that only 7% of the population attend independent schools and what we
offer is different; if it were not it is unlikely that anyone would choose to pay when the alternative is ‘free’, i.e. paid for by UK taxpayers. The success of independently educated pupils is well documented and does attract criticism as conferring unfair advantage on those who benefit from the excellent education we provide, much as the existence of Grammar Schools creates heated debate on fairness within the state system. The ill-informed believe independent schools are reserved for the rich, but research shows this is not the case. Parents from all walks of life choose to send their child to a fee-paying school because they believe it to be the best for their child. For many the fees present an enormous
challenge and they either make huge sacrifices or seek support from school bursaries or educational trusts. I am proud of the high quality education that we provide and see no reason to be apologetic for doing the best we can for the pupils in our care. I accept that from time to time, just like Doctors, teachers, politicians, the independent sector will draw negative comment from those who disagree with our philosophy or resent our success; that is a necessary consequence of a society that quite rightly believes in freedom of expression.

leven Hurst Senior School boys have raised almost £1,500 for Cancer Research UK after completing a sponsored head shave.
Staff and pupils gathered in the College Chapel to watch the boys bravely lose their locks in support of life saving research. Fifth former, James Henriet (16), orchestrated the fundraising event from start to finish. “At the start of the year I wanted to try something new” said James, as the clippers got to work, “and Cancer Research UK’s work affects so many. To raise this much money for them is incredible.” James began his search for participants in early January and found no shortage of volunteers, especially after explaining to them the difference that research can make to millions of sufferers. Abigail Wood, a Central Fundraising Executive for the charity, advised James throughout and commented, “Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer and

he hit rock bottom after Brighton showed him the door to end his second spell as their manager after one season in 1987 following spells in charge of Charlton Athletic, Crystal Palace and QPR. Mullery says: “I went back on the assumption that, if I got rid of three players on £33,000 a year in three months or so, I’d get a five-year contract. They knew I was strong-willed enough to do it. There was nothing in writing. I trusted them, got rid of the players and was sacked. I’d been shafted. “I became a recluse. Football had been my whole life since I’d been 15. It was a nightmare. “I told the club ‘you’ve got to get rid of all three’. They did and got about 50 applications for manager and took my recommendation of John Hollins who was successful. Now they’ve filled the place with money and been extremely successful.” Mullery is convinced Seagulls will return to the Premier League for the first time since he guided them there. England at the Amex Albion’s Amex Stadium will host one of its biggest fixtures to date when England under-21s take on Austria on March 25 in their final home friendly before Euro 2013.The under-21 side contains a host of emerging talent, with players such as Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling, Blackpool midfielder Tom Ince and Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland all expected to make an appearance.
Albion bolster Development Squad Brighton & Hove Albion have made a double signing with imposing centre-back Rohan Ince and highly-rated goalkeeper Christian Walton signing to their development squad.Ince, 20, joined Chelsea when he was seven and despite signing his first professional contract in 2010, he failed to make a first team appearancewith the Blues and had his contract terminated at Stamford Bridge before signingan 18-month contactwith the Seagulls. Meanwhile, Walton, 17, has attracted the gaze of a number of Premier League clubs but after a successful trial at the Amex hehas now joined Albion’s development squad to complete his apprentice years before signing a professional three-year contract in the summer.
Hoskins’ season over Brighton & Hove Albion forward Will Hoskins has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering ruptured cruciate and medial ligaments in his right knee. Albion boss Gus Poyet said: “It is really bad luck for Will. He was deserving to play because of the way he was training and it just shows what a crazy game football is. He gets the chance to play and he gets injured.”
Painter switches Seagulls for Cherries Brightonfull-back Marcos Painter has joined Bournemouth on loan until the end of the season. The left sided defender has found his playing time limited at the Amex this season following the arrival of Wayne Bridge in the summer and has now moved to the Dean Court in search of regular first-team football. He will link up with former Albion duo Tommy Elphick and Steve Cook.

But Marler started to feel “burned out” through increased rugby commitments, with an international career also taking off. Former England player Will Green, from Sussex, who coached at Worthing’s Roundstone Lane, convinced him to keep going. Marler says: “There were times I was a bit down. This is actually a hard work. I’m not enjoying it. I went to Will and asked him ‘did you ever get like that’. He said ‘of course. Anyone is going to get like that, with any job they do. DETROIT MOTOR SHOW REPORT On behalf of you my dear readers, I recently put myself out and attended the Detroit Motor Show to see what’s new for next year. Often these shows turn out
either much of the same euro box tat or some insane concept car that will never see the outside of the design studio or the drug addled brain of the ‘designer’. But,
l found some sexy new models that you will be seeing on the streets of Brighton in 2014. Maarten Hoffmann.
Once in a while, along comes a car that make you want to be sick. When the Japanese aren’t slaughtering whales and consuming tons of shark fins, they turn their hand to car design. Oh dear. “The Nissan Resonance is one of the ugliest cars l haveever seen, and l just have to re-print some of the incomprehensible blurb from their press department: “The Resonance interior reflects the enlightened modernity of today’s crossover buyer, who values an amazing experience over traditional indulgence. The Architecture of the cabin is open and structured. Like the exterior, it defines and pushes the segment beyond convention” What! Where do they get this crap?
If you have an extra £200,000 or so to spend, you could go for the beautiful new Bentley GT Speed Convertible. With 616 bhp from a 6 litre W12 twin turbo charged power plant and all-wheel drive, this behemoth will not hang around and you just know it will be superb to drive and smell like heaven. Apparently, the world’s in recession – well no one told Bentley as their sales rose last year by 22% - someone’s got all the money!
Now if you want to see a crossover that look stunning, here’s the Honda Urban concept. Smooth lines and amazing styling with Honda’s magic seat arrangement that give maximum interior versatility. Very pretty.
94 Untitled.indd 4

Some of you might recall the Honda NSX from the 90’s – well here’sthe new one. It’s a concept for now but l cannot believe they will not produce it – it’s gorgeous. With a mid-mounted V6 and all-wheel drive, l want one please Santa. >>
There’s a new Corvette Stingray! This is the most powerful model ever with 450 hp that will take you from 0-60 in less than 4 seconds with more than 1g in the corners (that’s on the assumption that, unlike its predecessors, it will actually go round corners) I am not mad on the exterior styling but will hold my opinion until l drive it.
The long awaited Audi RS7 Sportback is finally here and will be available in Autumn of 2013 for £84,000. Powered by a bi-turbo V8 it will hit 60mph in 3.9 seconds and will reach 189 mph. With Audi’s legendary FWD system, this is one l will be testing for you and soon.

Green shoots? Or have we just adapted to a new way of working?
Jo Weatherall of Frank PR and Nik Askaroff of EMC give their views. Jo Weatherall
Frank! Communication Services The new normal - acceptance rather than optimism. What we are seeing in the market at the moment is a general acceptance that we are living in a changed economic environment. Companies have cut their costs, reduced their staff and revised budgets to take into account a slower economy. These changes have taken their toll over the past two years but it feels that now we are all settling into a new ‘normal’. And companies, including ours, are now looking to maintain and grow their market share from this new base.
support their in-house resources rather than take everything off-site. They are keen for us to inform their decisions but want their in-house teams to implement, or at least be able to implement some of the work. Their nervousness about the economy is understandably extended to nervousness about taking risks.
So slowly slowly companies are feeling optimistic enough to invest in their future by looking at how they can cost-effectively market themselves to current and new audiences. But there is a caution in the way that this is being done. Budgets are carefully monitored and fixed cost projects seem to be more desirable than open-ended ones. Companies are also looking at their own purchasing and procurement processes to ensure that the very systems that are meant to control costs are not restricting better value purchasing decisions.
Are we seeing green shoots of recovery? I think we are – but at the moment we are having to dig deep to give the shoots the environment they need to grow (sorry about the extended metaphor).
We are also finding that clients are looking for a partnership approach – one where we
To encourage business growth in Brighton we need to make sure that every small business owner has access to the support they need to ensure they are running their businesses as effectively as possible. A combination of peer-to-peer learning and really good professional support can really change the
way a business ‘works’. Business owners themselves should look to develop their networks and to take the time to look at the real value of what they are delivering and who their potential audiences really are. And.. where possible keep the money in the city by using local talent whenever you can.

2013 started slowly for us as a lot of businesses were late back from the break but it seems that this served to revitalise thoughts and actions for many. On our corporate finance side we have had 3 offers for businesses we had for sale and 2 offers of funding for companies as well as completing on 4 transactions. On our business support side we are seeing new projects and clients pushing ahead with investment which they want help with. Our Sales support team are particularly active helping grow businesses. Margins are still tight but there is plenty out there to fight for and the fears for the general economy and Europe seem to have taken backstage for the moment. The government initiatives for funding are now definitely filtering through and the private equity and venture capital sector are out there looking for transactions. Values are soft but deals are being done and the corporates are at long last looking to invest some of the billions that they are sitting on. So yes we are definitely seeing some green shoots and hoping that it is the start of a great year.

When the First World War had come to its bloody end, a remarkable group of influential writers, artists and intellectuals, a group that that included Virginia Woolf, John Maynard Keynes, T.S, Elliot, Roger Fry and Lytton Strachey among others, began to visit Charleston. The Bloomsbury set had arrived. And so began the Bloomsbury Group’s long association with Charleston and with Sussex.
