Brighton Festival

1. Damian Barr - to say our Brighton Fringe Trustee Damian Barr has a way with words is a massive understatement. Damian is just brilliant and I’m really looking forward to hearing him read from his first novel Maggie & Me, which will undoubtedly be a huge success.

The Best of the Fest ...chosen by the Fringe

2. The Contents of a House - I’d love to see the history and life of Preston Manor will be brought to life in this promenade performance - sounds fantastic and wish I could get tickets but it’s sold out! 3. The Tiger Lillies - I saw The Tiger Lillies at Edinburgh Fringe a few years ago and was swept away. They have such an enormous energy and create an amazing atmosphere, I’m sure this adaption of the Ancient Mariner will be unlike anything seen before.

We have asked the people behind the Brighton Fringe to choose their must-see events from Brighton Festival

Sam Lee and Friends

2. The Adventures of Don Quixote by Bicycle: because everyone loves a meandering site-specific theatre performance on the South Downs with the audience on bikes. Featuring real windmills!

2. Wasps and Soprano is something that I want very much the chance to see. It reminds me of the best of Frank Muir or Spike Milligan.

3. Sam Lee and Friends: because this is the one Festival event that all my friends seem to want to go.

to the 99th issue of Absolute Brighton. Next month we will be 100, and we will be making some exciting changes to the magazine to mark the centenary. I’m afraid you will have to wait until the June issue to find out more, but there is plenty going on in the meantime. We are moving into mad May, the month when Brighton goes into overdrive.

1. Faust: free. The intense physical and narrative dance style looks very enter taining.

Steve Bustin, Brighton Fringe Trustee

2. EarFilms: To Sleep.

1. Felix’s Machines: This sounds like a fascinating installation, using mechanical devices to make electronic music - I love anything that brings together old and new technology so this is right up my street and I’m looking forward to the live performance.

Tom Arr-Jones, Box Office Manager

2. Flathampton (for adults): We all like to be a big kid from time to time so the oppor tunity to take par t in this children’s event for adults that is par t child’s game, par t theatre is too good to miss especially as the lemonade is being replaced with cocktails! 3. Fixing Point: I love Stanmer Park and it always amazes me how few Brightonians make use of this country park on the edge of the city, so I’m hoping this new piece by Blast Theory will help people discover it. You’ll use a smar tphone to find audio recordings hidden among the trees in the woods, exploring both woodland and recent history, set to an electronic score. Should be amazing!

welcome...

4. Michael Rosen - anything by Michael Rosen is good with me!

1. The Tiger Lilies: macabre audio-visual reinterpretation of Coleridge from a very unique act. Should be flamboyant and unnerving. Used to be regular performers at Brighton Fringe, which runs from 4th May – 2nd June. See full listings at brightonfringe.org.

1. Michael Rosen’s contribution to Brighton Festival brings an edginess and mischievousness to the programme and inspires my curiosity. In par ticular, The Great Enormo: a Kerfuffle in B flat for Orchestra.

3. The Tiger Lillies are also fabulous and Faust outdoors (by Bad Taste) sounds wor th a shot so get there early.

Rasheed Rahman, Marketing Officer: The Ultimate Kate Bush Experience has my name on it. Could we really wave and waggle our way into the record books? Saturday 25 May, South Downs Although Bette Bourne and Paul Shaw have been around for years, I saw them for the first time only last summer, when they performed an excerpt from this show as par t of Altered Egos at Brighton Dome. These are consummate perfomers, poignant and funny, so I’m pleased the full show is returning to the Marlborough. Sunday 26 & Monday 27 May, Marlborough Theatre She remains the ultimate Bond Girl, I still own the cassingle of Kinky Boots and her turn in The Upper Hand was sublime. How can I resist the gravelly tones of Honor Blackman as Herself? Saturday 11 May, Komedia Studio

The Late Night Gimp Fight are true innovators of comedy. Shocking and hilarious, it’s an unmissable experience! Sunday 5 & Saturday 11 May, The Warren The Spiegeltent and performances within – It’s always great when the Brighton Fringe and Brighton Festival join together to create something for the whole city to enjoy. The Spiegeltent and Famous Spiegel Garden gives an array of performances from both the Brighton Festival and the Brighton Fringe that will always enter tain. Various dates, The Famous Spiegel Gardens You Left Me in the Dark Spun Glass Theatre are always trying to find the best way to present new performance. A very talented cast presents what should be a very interesting story set to a very different backdrop. I’m very excited about this performance. Monday 20 - Wednesday 22 May, The Old Police Cells You Left Me in the Dark

Pippa Smith - Head of Learning, Access and Participation: Chris Challis - Senior Press Officer:

I have picked events that show that the whole of Brighton wants to be par t of a festival - it’ caravantech.co.uk s wonderful to see contributions to the fringe from such a variety of local community groups and schools.

I’m delighted to hear Clever Peter are back in town with new show Once More Unto the Beach! A trio of very, very funny guys, they’ve impressed Radio 4 enough to get their own show. Plus, they rock coloured jumpers like no-one else. Friday 24 & Sunday 26 May, The Warren

St Ann’s Croquet Centenary in my much loved local park. The first cinematic experiments took place here - film moved on but the croquet players kept on bashing those balls... and because it is Brighton, there is a prize for the best hat! Friday 4 May, St Ann’s Well Gardens

I always try and catch the Brighton Beach Boys when they perform Pet Sounds vs. Sgt. Pepper, backed by the Psychedelic Love Orchestra. All Saints Church is the perfect venue for this gig, which normally ends with mass sing-a-longs and everyone on their feet! Saturday 25 May, All Saints Church

Deans Festival at Woodingdean Primary School. Free family fun for all ages as this local school invites everyone to come out to play! Saturday 18 May, Woodingdean Primary School Mr Pineapple Head has been a stalwar t of the Brighton and Hove children’s par ty circuit for many years. I have seen his delightful show in so many living rooms; it is lovely to see that he is performing at the Brunswick. Various dates, The Brunswick

Honor Blackman as Herself?

I always managed to miss John Osborne’s superb John Peel’s Shed whenever it came to Brighton - shame on me. Consequently I endeavour to catch his new show On The Beach this May. His stories are always beautifully told. Friday 10 & Saturday 11 May, The Warren

In May, there is no better place in the UK to be than Brighton. The place buzzes with creativity with no less than four major festivals: The Brighton Festival, the Fringe, the Art Open Houses and The Great Escape. It is a bit of a challenge for us as there is enough going on to fill a book rather than a magazine, but I am sure you will find our previews both interesting and informative. When looking forward to the big festivals, the ideal previews are written by people who are knowledgeable and passionate, but aren’t faced with the temptation of plugging their own shows. Our solution was to ask the people at the Fringe to choose their favourite Festival shows and vice versa. We have also enlisted our new columnist, one of Brighton’s most infamous artists, Jamie McCartney, to preview the Open House trails and we have interviewed the Tall Ships, one of the headliners at the live music festival, The Great Escape. Just make sure you make the most of this amazing month. Take the plunge and see a show, visit an Open House and listen to some live music. It is the best place to be - but only if you join in. Enjoy

Next Model Heats Hot Up The search is on for Brighton’s Next Hot Model

T

he first heats for Brighton’s Next Hot Model took place in April and already the quality of entrants has impressed the judges, as can be seen by the photos on this page from the first heat. The founder of the event, hair and beauty stylist Fatosh Kalan, was very happy with the contenders at the first heat. “Our first heat started really well with 20 lovely entries that we were most pleased with, starting from age 16 to 30. The boys

from PRM model agency in London were present to help and advise on how the models can get the best out of themselves in the industry, as well as tips on posing and general guidance on how the industry works. “The last heat is on 1st May at Bohemia and we are welcoming signed models as well, but the buzz of finding a new face with no experience and seeing them blossom into a very good model is what makes it all so worthwhile.

“It really frustrates us when young people spend fortunes on portfolios and don’t receive the proper advice. This competition isn’t just about the winning, it is also about offering opportunities and the chance to find out more about the industry from trusted experts.” www.nexthotmodel.co.uk Photographs from the first heat at Bohemia by Phill Howard

Health

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) What is it? Usually, a combination of symptoms, the most common being pain relieved by opening the bowels, passage of frequent loose stools and some mucus and a sensation of incomplete clearance of the bowel. Tummy bloating is sometimes visible. Symptoms most often start in those aged between 20 and 40, more commonly affecting women. Additional symptoms can include lethargy, headache and a general malaise. Irritable bowel symptoms often lead patients to attend their GP indeed it is reckoned around 1 in 20 of all GP consultations are for irritable bowel syndrome or IBS. IBS can lead to time off work with surveys showing a doubling of the average time off work for IBS sufferers.

Why do people get IBS? Symptoms are often related to certain foods and about half of the patients with irritable bowel are suffering with stress, commonly with anxiety or some mild depressive disorder. Effectiveness of anti-depressants and the response to anxiety-relieving medication or psychological treatments argue for an important psychological component to an irritable bowel in some patients. Doctors have long been aware that a family history of irritable bowel is helpful in establishing a diagnosis. There have been a number of studies looking at candidate genes for irritable bowel but so far no common genetic factor has been identified. Available evidence suggests that the familial element of irritable bowel results from environmental influences rather than a genetic cause. Irritable bowel patients have alteration in movement not only of the large intestine (colon) but also the stomach and small intestine. Also, the bowel is hypersensitive making irritable bowel patients more aware and discomforted by movement of the intestine.

A sub-group of irritable bowel patients relate their symptoms to an episode of infectious gastroenteritis or a course of antibiotic and these are likely genuine causes for irritable bowel in some individuals. Finally, the role of hormones in IBS is poorly understood with menstruation frequently triggering or exacerbating symptoms whilst pregnancy or the menopause is associated with either worsening or improving symptoms.

How is IBS treated? There is no doubt that patients who have the opportunity to tell their symptoms to a doctor and feel that the doctor has understood their concerns and examined them are more likely to gain relief from their symptoms by alleviating anxiety about more serious disease. Almost all patients with an irritable bowel will have tried some form of dietary manipulation by reducing or withdrawing certain foods and this may be helpful. Most commonly it is worthwhile avoiding caffeine, alcohol, dairy products and reducing dietary fibre intake, particularly bran. Avoidance of red meat, oily and fried or fatty food may be helpful. Eating frequent meals of small amounts of food can help to lessen the symptoms of IBS. However it is most important to have a nutritionally adequate diet and sometimes this requires discussion with a dietician.

24 May-Nuffield.indd 2

18/04/2013 21:23

Psychological therapies include relaxation training, cognitive behavioural therapy, psychotherapy and hypnotherapy all of which may be helpful. Pharmacological (drug) treatments for irritable bowel include antispasmodics such as Mebeverine (135-150mg three times daily) and drugs such as Amitriptyline starting at 10mg daily are helpful in some patients. Anti-diarrhoeal drugs such as Loperamide are also helpful from time to time. Probiotics have also been helpful in some patients although response to this is not consistent.

Is IBS associated with serious disease? IBS does not lead to any serious disease, indeed studies show a decreased chance of death or serious disease from irritable bowel. However, it is important to distinguish the symptoms of irritable bowel from those of other bowel diseases namely cancer or inflammation (colitis) of the bowel or coeliac disease (wheat intolerance). Doctors call these symptoms alarm or “red flag” symptoms and I have listed them below: - Age greater than 50 years - Short history of symptoms - Documented weight loss - Symptoms that awake patient or interfere - with sleep - Male sex - Family history of bowel (colon) cancer - Anaemia - Bleeding from the bottom - Recent antibiotic use

Dr Stuart Cairns MD MSc FRCP Consultant Gastroenterologist and Clinical Director of the Sussex Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. www.sussexgastro.co.uk

Any of these features should lead to a request for referral to a physician specialising in gastroenterology to ensure that irritable bowel is responsible for these symptoms rather than any more serious disease. In conclusion, IBS is common, occurring in some studies in up to 25% of people. Symptoms wax and wane sometimes over years. A number of factors are important with sometimes more than a single factor responsible in any individual. Treatment varies according to the exact nature of symptoms and discussion with a GP or specialist physician in gastroenterology is necessary. IBS is not associated with serious disease but it is important to distinguish it from serious disease. If there are any “red flag” symptoms then it is important to see a physician specialising in gastroenterology who will be able to help and hopefully reassure.

Since dieters are overweight there’s a good chance ‘normal’ is ‘too much’ and ‘poor quality’.

Paris Experience For those who want to experience Paris up-close and personal you can try an interactive guided walking city tour with a difference. Sample regional food and wine, play petanque and learn about the history and heritage of France as you walk through the streets where it all happened. The adventure begins at Sainte-Genevieve Hill, a popular spot that offers impressive views of the imposing Pantheon before you head to Luxembourg Gardens to soak up the romanticism of this pretty, peaceful haven away from the bustle of the city. Moving on, you’ll stroll to vibrant Saint-Germain, home of musicians, artists, writers and intellectuals. The area is full of tiny bookshops offering wonderfully obscure titles, lively street markets, cool coffee houses and cosmopolitan cafes and the wonderful atmosphere makes it easy to see why musicians and writers such as Jim Morrison and Ernest Hemingway fell madly in love with SaintGermain. Strolling along the embankments of the River Seine, you’ll stop at a traditional wine house to sample a complimentary typical French charcuterie plate of wonderful cheeses, cured meats and rich pate – an authentic French gastronomic treat. Then it’s time to get involved in a game of petanque or bocci balls in the beautiful surrounding square, which is the oldest in Paris. Heading in the direction of the lively Saint-Michel area, you’ll take a peek into the first English bookshop in Paris, which is crammed into a wonderful medieval house and packed full with books of all types before the tour concludes at the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral. Priced from £35 per person. For more information or to book visit www.goseedo.com or call 0800 980 5551.

Ooh-la-la Phoebe took a year out to “discover the world” after finishing her education and simply never looked back! Her passion for travel has resulted in numerous experiences including being chased by a lioness on horseback in Africa (and subsequently catching Malaria on the same unfortunate trip) to an unforgettable incident in Sicily involving some questionable locals to a more peaceful two years running a bar in a small village in Greece. A firm believer in travel providing a fantastic education for life, Phoebe is here to offer a twist on the usual travel column. We hope you enjoy! www.oliverrelations.co.uk Thanks to Winhelm Lappe for the use of his Paris photo (flickr.com/wlappe).

Moulin Rouge and French Cancan Dinner It is a good idea to pre purchase your ticket for the evening at this world-famous cabaret – entry includes a gourmet three-course meal from the outstanding French Cancan menu.Your meal will be prepared by renowned French chef Laurent Tarridec, who will provide you with culinary delights as outstanding as the show itself. was recently invited to a friend’s newly built home. I had no idea what to expect but upon entering their new home I was lost for words! The house was simply amazing, with an envy-inducing interior. A beautiful home containing a careful blend of handsome furnishings, exquisite accessories and luxurious textiles.

A careful blend of handsome furnishings, exquisite accessories and luxurious textiles.

The property has been built in the style of a period property with high ceilings, traditional style fireplaces, cornicing and high skirting’s. Along with all this there is period – style arches throughout. The house has large rooms with lots of doors so that space flows. A close look at any of the rooms in this house reveals impressive attention to detail. Careful thought has been given to the building of this lovely home and there is something very calming about its neutral palette. All the rooms in the house were totally welcoming and truly inspirational.A harmonious home that is unmistakably chic yet comfortable and the subtle restrained colour palette throughout suits the owner’s furnishings and art

perfectly. The bedrooms are all well laid out with en-suite bathrooms that are tranquil, spacious, luxurious and kitted out for serious pampering! In one of the guest bathrooms the walls are covered with crocodile embossed wallpaper. Simply stunning! The master bedroom has a his and hers bathroom and dressing room. The kitchen consists of hand painted units, complete with granite counters, whilst the island at the centre of the kitchen is surrounded by mahogany units. To the side of the kitchen is a bar area, a sitting area and a casual dining area. All this is effortlessly linked to the surrounding rooms by the beautiful limestone floor. This is open-plan living at its best as all the rooms within the home are interlinked in a logical way in a recipe for good living and entertaining. The outside area is equally charming with beautiful landscape gardens, a swimming pool and a large built-in cooking area.

The Dining Room The dining table is Italian with a solid stone base and a mahogany top.The high-back chairs are upholstered in leather and paisley fabric. The absolute jewel in the dining room is the amazing gilt, ornate chandelier suspended over the dining table. On the wall behind the table is a landscape painted across three panels in subtle colours.Altogether a wonderfully sophisticated dining room for both formal and informal dining.

The Master Bedroom The master bedroom features a 19th century Italian iron four-poster bed. An inviting bed dressed in sumptuous linen from Ralph Lauren in pale tones. Behind the bed hangs a ornate sunburst mirror. Curtains in the bedroom are all made using tone-ontone damask fabrics. A bespoke footstool sits at the end of the bed. Overall a very calming place to relax and sleep.

Into the Garden Interiors

M

ay is a lovely month in the garden. The garden is suddenly alive as the seedlings and shrubs erupt into glorious colour. Borders, that seem to have been bare in places are now filled with all sorts of perennials. May gives us a taste of Summer to come. Hopefully the uncertain weather in April has passed and we can think about planting up hanging baskets and containers. However you may still need to protect these under cover until the end of May or early June. As we all want our balconies, terraces, sitting out areas to look beautiful in the Summer, now is the time to start planting up pots which will provide those areas with colour all through the Summer months. Growing plants in containers allows you to place plant combinations that would be impossible together in the open ground. Container growing also makes it possible to arrange the outside look of your house in much the same way you might rearrange the interior – whether to change the seasonal appearance or transform a patio for a different purpose. Use a good compost like John Innes No.2 and make sure your container has sufficient holes to let out excess moisture and put a little gravel in the base of pots to help drainage. Once you have planted up your pots, cover the surface of the pot with more grit – this will look good and also help conserve moisture.

“Garden must be looked unto & dressed as the body.” George Herbert (1593-1633)

Growing Plants in containers Growing plants in containers not only softens hard surfaced areas, but it also brings the garden right to the very door of the house. Here are some of my favourite plants for containers: Cordyline Place this in the centre of the pot for a dramatic effect. Pelargoniums Plant these around the Cordyline for wonderful colour. Nicotiana These around the Pelargoniums for the scent. Petunia (Dark Blue Dwarf ) Place these around the edge of the pot.

o make your garden space you can really live in, it must be furnished: Choose pieces that are comfortable that will tempt you to go outside, relax and soak up the sun as the warmer weather approaches.

A large range of garden furniture is available in your local garden centre, you can choose from furnishings that are permanent fixtures or moveable. Lightweight furniture can be less expensive in comparison to wood or stone. However, choosing wood or stone furniture will be a good long-term investment that will add an architectural dimension to your garden all through the year. While you may not want your garden cluttered with garden furniture all the time, a few permanent pieces, such as a weatherproof hardwood bench, a metal table and a few chairs on your terrace or an inviting stone bench in a quiet corner of your garden all play an important role in the garden’s structure and make your garden welcoming. In high summer there is nothing more pleasurable than lounging around in the garden, this is when the softer, more reclining types of chair are needed. The lounger is a gardener’s dream – more of a day-bed than chair. Woodslattered steamer chairs were the original loungers, designed for long sea voyages. Their modern equivalents – in wood, metal or plastic usually come with upholstered cushions for comfort.

Brighton Food Festival Following the huge success of The Brighton & Hove Food Festival’s Spring Harvest over the Easter Weekend, plans for an ‘Autumn Harvest’ are already in progress. The Brighton and Hove’s Food and Drink Festival is now in its 11th year with events being held twice a year in spring and autumn. Last year the festival promoted over 350 businesses and organizations. The festival is a celebration of local food and drink. The spring event saw 37,000 foodies descend to the city,17,000 attended the Big Sussex Market, Live Food Show and Children’s Food Festival on Good Friday and a 22,000 indulged in the free food activities on Saturday 30 March. The weekend kicked off at Hotel du Vin on Thursday 28 March, it included speeches by Sir Peter Field, who has supported the increase of the festival over the past 10 years and the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex. The event also saw the festival team raise £2,700 for Rockinghorse children’s charity as well as raising £400 for the FareShare surplus food redistribution charity. Autumn Harvest’s event will run from 6-15 September. The opening weekend of the Autumn Harvest’s 10 day event (7-8 September) will include the Big Sussex Market, which is a celebration of incredible food and drink, as well as the return of Make Your Case, a wine tasting event held in the Dome Room at Hotel Du Vin. Across the week, local restaurants including Moshimo and Terre á Terre, will be hosting gala dinners and themed events, and to display the best of Sussex there will be beer and wine tasting events. A bus tour will also run for people that want to go behind the scenes of some of Sussex’s best producers visiting Vineyards, farms and gastropubs. The following weekend (14-15 September) will consist of food and drink on the seafront on Hove Lawns, whilst The Sussex & The World Market will be offering local and international food as well as The Food show which will include 16 local chefs and hold various competitions including the well known Extreme Food Challenge, coinciding with these events are the Masterclass marquee and the free Children’s Food Festival that provides workshops and experiences for little budding food enthusiasts. Free access events include The Big Sussex Market, Sussex & The World Market, Live Food Show and Children’s Food Festival, ticket events and dinners will be posted at the end of June/start of July on the festival website and organizers are eager to talk to local business who wish to take part in September’s event, more details can be found on the website www.brightonfoodfestival.com.

A Taste of North Africa Kenzi in Hove offers an exotic trip to Morocco and Algeria Words: Ian Trevett

t is the ornate detail that catches the eye as soon as you enter Hove’s new North African restaurant. The intricacy of the patterns on the doors and the enticing decor transport you to the warmth

of that unique strip of creativity between the Sahara and the Med. Apparently it’s all about mathematics. Early Muslim artisans covered the walls of houses and mosques with repeating sequences of delicate and complicated geometries, through which the infinite wisdom of God might be intimated. If such care is

taken with the food, then this was going to a be a very enjoyable evening. The decor is part of the experience of eating out, but only one factor. Two other areas where Kenzis excel are the friendliness of the staff and the atmosphere, and on this Friday night we were not to be disppappointed. Mohammed looked after us with a cheery smile and just enough chat to make us feel comfortably welcome.

Fringe

Fringe Favourites... chosen by the Festival We have asked the people behind the Brighton Festival to choose their must-see events from the Fringe

Rasheed Rahman, Marketing Officer: The Ultimate Kate Bush Experience has my name on it. Could we really wave and waggle our way into the record books? Saturday 25 May, South Downs Although Bette Bourne and Paul Shaw have been around for years, I saw them for the first time only last summer, when they performed an excerpt from this show as part of Altered Egos at Brighton Dome.

Pippa Smith - Head of Learning, Access and Participation: I have picked events that show that the whole of Brighton wants to be part of a festival - it’ caravantech.co.uk s wonderful to see contributions to the fringe from such a variety of local community groups and schools. St Ann’s Croquet Centenary in my much loved local park. The first cinematic experiments took place here - film moved on but the croquet players kept on bashing those balls... and because it is Brighton, there is a prize for the best hat! Friday 4 May, St Ann’s Well Gardens Deans Festival at Woodingdean Primary School. Free family fun for all ages as this local school invites everyone to come out to play! Saturday 18 May, Woodingdean Primary School Mr Pineapple Head has been a stalwart of the Brighton and Hove children’s party circuit for many years. I have seen his delightful show in so many living rooms; it is lovely to see that he is performing at the Brunswick. Various dates, The Brunswick

LaClique - Mark Winmill by Douglas Robertson

Martin Atkinson - Programming Co-ordinator: The Late Night Gimp Fight are true innovators of comedy. Shocking and hilarious, it’s an unmissable experience! Sunday 5 & Saturday 11 May, The Warren The Spiegeltent and performances within – It’s always great when the Brighton Fringe and Brighton Festival join together to create something for the whole city to enjoy. The Spiegeltent and Famous Spiegel Garden gives an array of performances from both the Brighton Festival and the Brighton Fringe that will always entertain.

Chris Challis - Senior Press Officer: I’m delighted to hear Clever Peter are back in town with new show Once More Unto the Beach! A trio of very, very funny guys, they’ve impressed Radio 4 enough to get their own show. Plus, they rock coloured jumpers like no-one else. Friday 24 & Sunday 26 May, The Warren I always try and catch the Brighton Beach Boys when they perform Pet Sounds vs. Sgt. Pepper, backed by the Psychedelic Love Orchestra. All Saints Church is the perfect venue for this gig, which normally ends with mass sing-a-longs and everyone on their feet! Saturday 25 May, All Saints Church I always managed to miss John Osborne’s superb John Peel’s Shed whenever it came to Brighton - shame on me. Consequently I endeavour to catch his new show On The Beach this May. His stories are always beautifully told. Friday 10 & Saturday 11 May, The Warren

Brighton Festival

The Best of the Fest ...chosen by the Fringe We have asked the people behind the Brighton Fringe to choose their must-see events from Brighton Festival Julian Caddy, Managing Director Brighton Fringe 1. Michael Rosen’s contribution to Brighton Festival brings an edginess and mischievousness to the programme and inspires my curiosity. In particular, The Great Enormo: a Kerfuffle in B flat for Orchestra. 2. Wasps and Soprano is something that I want very much the chance to see. It reminds me of the best of Frank Muir or Spike Milligan. 3. The Tiger Lillies are also fabulous and Faust outdoors (by Bad Taste) sounds worth a shot so get there early.

The Tiger Lillies

Steve Bustin, Brighton Fringe Trustee 1. Felix’s Machines: This sounds like a fascinating installation, using mechanical devices to make electronic music - I love anything that brings together old and new technology so this is right up my street and I’m looking forward to the live performance. 2. Flathampton (for adults): We all like to be a big kid from time to time so the opportunity to take part in this children’s event for adults that is part child’s game, part theatre is too good to miss especially as the lemonade is being replaced with cocktails! Flathampton

3. Fixing Point: I love Stanmer Park and it always amazes me how few Brightonians make use of this country park on the edge of the city, so I’m hoping this new piece by Blast Theory will help people discover it. You’ll use a smartphone to find audio recordings hidden among the trees in the woods, exploring both woodland and recent history, set to an electronic score. Should be amazing!

Heather James, Chair of Brighton Fringe 1. Damian Barr - to say our Brighton Fringe Trustee Damian Barr has a way with words is a massive understatement. Damian is just brilliant and I’m really looking forward to hearing him read from his first novel Maggie & Me, which will undoubtedly be a huge success.

Damian Barr Michael Rosen

4. Michael Rosen - anything by Michael Rosen is good with me!

Sam Lee and Friends

1. The Tiger Lilies: macabre audio-visual reinterpretation of Coleridge from a very unique act. Should be flamboyant and unnerving. Used to be regular performers at Brighton Fringe, which runs from 4th May – 2nd June. See full listings at brightonfringe.org. 2. The Adventures of Don Quixote by Bicycle: because everyone loves a meandering site-specific theatre performance on the South Downs with the audience on bikes. Featuring real windmills! 3. Sam Lee and Friends: because this is the one Festival event that all my friends seem to want to go.

Vanessa Jones, Office Manager

EarFilms

1. Faust: free. The intense physical and narrative dance style looks very entertaining. 2. EarFilms: To Sleep.

Tom Arr-Jones, Box Office Manager

Faust

Flaming Lips

1. Daniel Kitson: because the man is an exceptional comedian and very very funny. 2. Britten’s The Canticles: because my parents are well into their classical music and are very excited about this event, and it takes a lot to get them excited. 3. Flaming Lips: because they are really really, really, good live.

Fringe

A preview to

a thrill

Fringe Preview by Michael Brooks Take my word for it, with 704 events spread throughout the city in 181 venues across 4 weeks, there are a multitude of wonderful shows to be seen every single day of this year’s Fringe. As a totally addicted supporter of the annual festival if there was only one tip I was able to share it is this – FREE doesn’t mean worthless, as the bank notes I have gratefully parted with into the collection hat of many free entry shows over the years stand testament. However I have been given a whole page so here are as many recommendations as I can squeeze onto it. Phil Kay, Freewheelin’ Mirth Peddler Comedy/Stand-up - Temple Bar Cyclists of the world – unite and take over! Extraordinary talent Phil Kay will be getting his audience in the mood for an hour of his brilliant hatstand train of thought stand-up comedy by leading them on a bicycle tour of the city beforehand. Fringe royalty. The Ray Charles Experience Music/Performance - Spiegeltent Liz Edwards of Radio Reverb fame alliteratively proclaimed Melvin Brown as ‘extremely exhuberant and effervescent’ after he performed an impromptu tap dance on her show. I predict the combination of lavish Spiegeltent venue and Movin’ Melvin’s soulful show will be the greatest since whisky and women. Scottish Falsetto Socks in Space Comedy/Puppetry - Komedia Studio I apprehensively saw this sock puppet show’s performance at last year’s Fringe on the recommendation of my Glaswegian buddy and spent the whole hour caught between hysterics and disbelief that the two characters could be voiced by one actor. The jokes come so quickfire you’ll wish you could watch it again in slow-mo to catch them all. I’m backing this show with my genuine solid gold cast iron guarantee, do not miss it!

Pranks and Mischief Lecture - Hendrick’s Carnival of Knowledge Regulars of the Catalyst Club will be familiar with Dr Bramwell’s comfortable bedside manner but for those of you still on his waiting list this is a treat not to be missed. Dr B walks us through an unbelievable history of jokers, fakers, con artists, liars, hood winkers and grand scale leg pullers. You will leave the show with the irresistible urge to unleash your own mischief, especially after a few G & Ts. Twonky’s Blue Cababra Cabaret/Comedy - Temple Bar Fans of the surreal, absurd and completely bonkers will right at home in Twonky’s world of the bizarre, everyone else will feel growing confusion and anxiety. Think Vic and Bob on strong acid. Aftershow councilling may be required. On the Beach Storytelling/Theatre - The Warren Anyone who saw Mr Osbourne’s last show, the wonderful John Peel’s Shed, won’t need any persuading to see a new performance by a very lovely and intimate storyteller . Everyone else, please be persuaded. International Artists Lunchtime Concerts Music/Classical - Chapel Royal If the demands of work and family prevent you from fully embracing the festival perhaps you can still squeeze in a trio of highbrow lunchtime classical concerts at theTARDIS-like Chapel Royal. Take a midday musical journey back in time and make the rest of the MealDeal office lunchers jealous. Shit-Faced Shakespeare Theatre - The Warren This Shakespeare troupe perform the plays with a slight twist, one of the cast is three sheets to the wind, throwing an extra element of comedy, chance and chaos into the proceedings. But what would Will make of it all? ‘It provokes the desire, but it takes away the performance…it makes him, and it mars him; it sets him on, and it takes him off ’ Well, I’ll drink to that.

James Campbell Kids & Youth/Comedy/Stand-up - Old Market This is stand-up comedy without the swearing aimed at children but, like all the best children’s entertainment, thoroughly enjoyed by adults. If you don’t have any offspring kidnap your friends’ or relatives’ and have them buy your ticket too. Pint Dreams Storytelling/Music/Theatre - Seven Stars Part of the joy of the Fringe is sometimes taking a chance on a show you know nothing about. Much like the Grand National, you can just take a punt based on a name that takes your fancy. This is my wildcard entry, and as the saying goes, it is better to regret something you have done than something you haven’t. Eat a Queer Foetus 4 Jesus Comedy/Stand-up - The Quadrant I saw this last year and as the title suggests, this stand-up comedian doesn’t pull any punches during his vitriolic hour of depraved self-confession. Prepare to be appalled and laugh in equal measure, and then be appalled at yourself for laughing. The Fantasist Dance /Theatre/Puppetry - The Warren I have been hotly tipped by friends in the know that this is one of the must-see shows at this year’s Fringe, and with 5 star reviews overspilling with descriptions such as; ingenious, astonishing, enchanting, hilarious, powerful, endearing and beautiful, coupled with the delightful setting of The Warren, I am inclined to agree.

Don’t take my word for it as there are surely hundreds of fabulous shows I have overlooked but, sorry, I make no apology for that. If you don’t fancy any of these get out there, enjoy the shared spaces at the Spieleltent, the Warren or Fringe City where you can mingle with performers and speak to other festival goers. Enthusiastic word of mouth is the best barometer of what is worth seeing and the people handing out flyers are quite probably in that show so ask them about it. See you there.

Wonderment Art at Five is pleased to present ‘Wonderment’, an exhibition showcasing the work of three accomplished artists: Marie Mills, Deborah FluelerJones and Yvonne Coomber. Running from 27th April until 12th May, the exhibition celebrates spring with an enchanting collection of floral landscapes and contemporary abstracts that capture the beauty and transience of the awakening season.

Marie Mill’s paintings are a celebration of the overlooked beauty found in the wild hedgerows that frame the British landscape. Inspired by her passion for life and nature’s jewels, she works with oils and oil bar which offer her the versatility and depth of colour that she envisages for the canvas. Using a combination of palette knives and her fingers she works rapidly, forming vivid textures to depict the imprecise beauty of the wilderness. An early riser, Marie often paints at first light, enjoying the peace and solitude of the hazy dawn. The fluidity of Deborah Flueler-Jones’ work mimics the unpredictable, often fleeting moments that can be observed in the natural world. Each swirling brushstroke expresses her part envisaged, part impulsive reaction to the sights, sounds and situations that surround her. Whether energetic and zestful, or serene and delicate, Deborah’s colour tapestries gracefully portray the energy and spontaneity of the season. Yvonne Coomber’s whimsical florals encapsulate a poetry of colour, texture and sparkle that beautifully depict the flush of the blossoming season.Yvonne prefers to paint in the meadows where she can draw inspiration directly from the Devon countryside. Working with a combination of oils and mixed media,Yvonne is able to develop layers of texture which give her work incredible depth, drawing the viewer into her colour-filled world. Her unique, semi-abstract style brings a jovial innocence to the chaotic treasures of nature.

Meet the Lady Boys The Lady Boys of Bangkok have been entertaining audiences in the UK for 15 years and each year things get ever more flamboyant. As always the Lady Boys will be performing during the Fringe Festival (3rd May – 1st June), in the magnificent Sabai Pavilion – which really captures the oriental essence – especially with the aroma of the authentic Thai food. This year there are five newcomers to the party: Nicky, Jinny, Jennifer, Michelle and Alice. We caught up with Jennifer to find out how her Lady Boys of Bangkok experience is going: How does it feel to be part of the tour?

Have you found the choreography easy to pick up?

What are the costumes like? They are beautiful, I love fashion and one day I would love to be a designer. Towards the end of the show we wear the most amazing outfits that are based on the 2011 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show – I love them.

Experienced Lady Boy Naomi has been touring with the show for a few years: How would you describe this year’s show? It is a mixture of modern and classic songs, so we have taken massive hits from Girls Aloud, Jennifer Lopez and Gangnam Style and then mixed them with Tina Turner, The Village People and Cher. With all our shows there are cheeky elements and I think our tribute to Fifty Shade of Grey is really funny.

Is this show the best so far? “Because we perform a different show each year we do like to offer the audience something new, keep it funny and interesting so they come back to see us. One thing that will never change is getting the audience involved – they love it.”

Charity Runs

Running for Good This month, there are two fun runs that are raising money for great charities - and you don’t have to run 26 miles to join in! At 9am on Sunday 12 May 2013, the inaugural Brighton Big Balls fun endurance race takes place on the beaches of Brighton & Hove, raising awareness of testicular, penile and prostate cancers. All sponsorship raised by the race will go towards much-needed research into these potentially devastating diseases. Brighton Big Balls is a 3 kilometre course along Brighton and Hove’s glorious pebble beach and over the stone groynes (or should that be groins?) from the Meeting House Café by Hove Lawns to Hove Lagoon. To make it that bit harder, spunky competitors will carry two large red 14 inch balls made out of light rubber. Runners include Norman Cook, Juice FM presenters Jonno and Guy Lloyd, Albion and Sussex Sharks players. There will also be a few below-the-belt surprises; Ninja-beach is the base for a crack team armed with long poles and boxing gloves mounted on the end to knock competitors’ balls from their firm grasp. There is also an oil hand dip to encourage slippery balls. Gerard Maye Legal Ltd will host a water-balloon alley for competitors to run through where members of the public can purchase water-balloons to throw for charity, so you can expect a lot of laughs from a race with a serious issue at its heart. There are up to 400 spaces available in total and anyone over the age of 14 can take part. There is a £25 entry fee. www.brightonbigballs.com

You can be a Hero!

The 9th Brighton Heroes Run will take place on Sunday 19 May 2013. More than a race the Heroes Run is a unique opportunity for families and friends to come together, dress up as their favourite Hero and run. Starting and finishing on Hove Lawns the runs all emphasise the element of fun over racing and prizes are on hand for best costumes in all categories. Previous race heroes include a LEGO Batman and Robin and The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Brighton Heroes Run is organised by and the main fundraiser for Pass It On Africa. Pass It On Africa have a fundraising target of £20,000 for this year’s event to help expand their school projects in Ghana and Kenya. They are challenging every runner to raise £20 sponsorship to help them reach their goal. This popular Brighton event looks on track to be a sell out in 2013 with 3 ways people can enter - The MINI-HEROES 500m Dash, The SUPER 5k and The HEROIC 10k. www.heroesrun.org.uk www.facebook.com/HEROE5RUN

Our Sussex Wedding Michaela & Tom Brighton Registry Office Proud Brighton Ballroom We met through a mutual friend who introduced us as ‘two single people that should meet up.’ Then in December 2011 we were staying in a lovely little bungalow on Koh Samui, Thailand when Tom PROPOSED. Our wedding CEREMONY was at the Brighton Registry Office and the reception was held at the Proud Brighton Ballroom. The Ballroom was an amazing setting which we absolutely loved! For our HONEYMOON we went back packing in Costa Rica and Panama. We didn’t book it through a travel agent as we only booked the flights! The rest we made up when we got there!

The flowers came from Gunns, in Brighton. They were so helpful and paid attention to every little detail. They came and delivered the flowers to the hotel in the morning of the wedding and they were gorgeous!

She does VINTAGE INSPIRED shoes so they fit in well with my dress and they are the most comfortable shoes ever! I only had a simple brooch in my hair as I didn’t want too much. I bought a VINTAGE BROOCH and made this into a hair piece myself with pieces from the Big Bead Boutique, Brighton. Tom’s SUIT came from Gresham Blake the tailors in Brighton’s North Laines.

Photo Mad My friend recommended Erika from PHOTO MADLY to us and we were not disappointed! Erika is lovely and met with us to discuss our requirements etc on a couple of occasions. We are really pleased with the pictures too! The friend who recommended her was Lisa, who did our wedding stationary too. This was bespoke and exactly what we were looking for. Education

Education by Design It’s not just about taking in information at our local schools. Now there is a far higher emphasis on encouraging creativity...

Q&A Mrs Barbara Bradley

Kayley Rainton at the Young Fashion Designers Awards, Kent College Pembury

Head of Design & Technology Burgess Hill School for Girls

Is fashion and design an important subject to teach and encourage? Yes! It is a great subject which allows girls to have fun and be creative. They can design an item and then work to see that idea develop and become a reality. It is also fantastic in reinforcing many other subjects taught within the curriculum; for example, maths is involved in taking measurements, girls learn where in the world fibres are produced, and scientific knowledge of fibres is important. Kayley Rainton, 18, who is currently studying Textiles in the Sixth Form, won awards last year in the Young Fashion Designer and Young Craftsman of the Year Competitions. Polly Henderson, 16, was a finalist in the Young Designer of the Year Award at the Clothes Show Live at the NEC, Birmingham. How can schools encourage creativity? At Burgess Hill School for Girls, Textiles is studied by all girls from Year 7 so they learn basic skills such as using the sewing machine and other equipment, and how to make seams. At all stages they are encouraged to have an input into the design of their work so that it is unique to them, and this definitely encourages creativity. At Year 10, Textiles becomes an optional subject which is very popular at the school. The students are able to study Fashion Design and create wonderful garments for their assessments. Recently girls in Year 9 participated in a workshop organised by TRaid, a Textiles recycling charity, where they ‘up-cycled’ a man’s shirt into a stylish dress. As part of our Extra Curricular Textiles activities, girls work in mixed aged groups to design and make creative quilts which are entered into the Festival of Quilts competition held at the NEC, Birmingham in August. The skills involved in designing and making the quilts are essential skills for Fashion Design. Our two quilts were awarded first and third prize in the schools’ section. Has your school any alumni who have made their mark on fashion or design? Former pupil, Scarlett Tull, is now working in Italy for Swarovski. When she was at Burgess Hill School for Girls she won the Young Craftsman of the Year competition at the South of England Show. Another former pupil was Nicola Herlihy who went on to be the Wardrobe Mistress for the Phantom of the Opera and she now runs her own business.

T

he Art Department at Hurstpierpoint College has been running a Recycled Fashion project for Year 9 pupils for the past three years. The pupils work together in groups on designs that will be made up from the most unlikely of materials to create some unusual and

striking concepts, ranging from garments made of knitted bin liners and a pleated skirt made from the pages of the Financial Times. The project culminates in a catwalk fashion show where pupils model their designs for fellow pupils, parents and staff to admire. The project is enormously valuable as a creative activity in its own right but underlying the whole exercise is the serious message that we need to care actively for the environment.

Education Brighton and Hove High School held their annual Fashion Show, raising money for the Rockinghorse Appeal and the Neimann-Pick Disease Group. Girls from year 7 to year 13 took part, modelling clothes from a range of local shops including Chic Boutique on Church Road, Hove and Walk-in Wardrobe. The finale of the evening saw the girls showcasing bridal dresses from Ocean Brides in Hove. The evening was a huge success with over £2400 raised for the chosen charities.

Creativity is a key aspect of all courses at Eastbourne College and is encouraged at all levels through a variety of strategies including: • Younger students are encouraged to customise designs rather than just undertake ‘set’ projects • Older students are encouraged to design for specific clients / target markets – they are expected to view their projects as having real commercial value and to understand the implications of scales of production • Students are encouraged to take part in competitions and other events. These include the Young Craftsman of the Year at the South of England show (many awards have been won over the years, including 1st place in the DT section in 2012). In 2012 a Textiles student was awarded third place in the Clothes Show Live competition Young handbag designer of the Year. • Students who are talented at DT and Maths are encouraged to apply for the Arkwright Scholarship and some of these also take part in the Nuffield Bursary programme.

The new column from the editor of SussexSport

Mike Donovan The Don on his pride in how Sussex produce a wealth fo talent

L

et’s turn the clock back. Yours truly was conjuring up a wealth of stories for a section dedicated to youth and schools sport in The Argus. By that time my experience in journalism had covered contrasting spectrums. It included writing a book about Arsenal, featuring Liam Brady (later to become Brighton & Hove Albion’s manager after a glittering playing career). It extended to covering world boxing title fights in Las Vegas and Atlantic City, even meeting Muhammad Ali, and Davis Cup tennis in Romania a week or so after the bloody overthrow of Ceausescu. I chatted to Alex Ferguson within a week of his appointment as Manchester United manager, sipped tea with George Best and

interviewed England World Cup heroes like Sir Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters and George Cohen. But it was the experience of speaking to freshbehind-the-ears youngsters who gushed about the thrill of sporting achievement and what led to, that topped everything. I was privileged to tell their tales. Nothing compares. Many have made their names as grownups. Longhill School pupil Adam El-Abd is a Brighton & Hove Albion stalwart. Brighton College student Matt Prior popped in to inform me of a burgeoning cricket career which has led to him helping Sussex to the Championship title and England to the Ashes (twice!) and that recent Test series-saving ton in New Zealand. Brighton College trio Sarah Taylor, Holly Colvin and Laura Marsh and Burgess Hill School for Girls batter Caroline Atkins revealed their dreams which were realised when they lifted the Women’s World Cricket Cup. Brighton College’s Clare Connor wrote a regular column called ‘Clare Declares’ and became England Women’s cricket captain and earned an OBE. Gemma Spofforth, from Shoreham, was written about as a

budding swimmer and developed into a double Olympian and a world record- breaker. Worth School triple jumper Onochie ‘Larry’ Achike spoke of his pride at becoming a world junior champion and went on to Commonwealth Games gold and two Olympics. Then there’s three county rugby players, Joe Launchbury, Billy Twelvetrees and Joe Marler. All have put down markers for the upcoming British Lions tour after playing in England’s latest Six Nations Championship campaign. It only seemed like yesterday that Launchbury told me his sporting ambitions as a pupil of Christ’s Hospital (Horsham). And that is without mentioning stories on Dylan Hartley, who attended Beacon College in Crowborough progressing through England Schoolboys on route to the England Six Nations squad. There was a previous generation of rugby players, including Alex King of Brighton College, who were also covered and went on to the senior international stage. Brighton & Hove and the rest of Sussex is often seen as a sporting backwater beyond its borders, but it is clear the county has plenty to crow about through its youth and school children. And I am proud to have helped prove the point. As The Who sang: ‘The Kid’s Are Alright’.

It only seemed like yesterday that Launchbury told me his sporting ambitions as a pupil of Christ’s Hospital

t’s April 3rd and so pleased I’m now sitting at my desk because it’s been snowing and I’ve been out all morning. It’s Press Day which basically means the Sussex CCC playing staff are having their pre-season team photos in their new 2013 playing kit. No hardship there I hear you cry, but it is 1 degree Celsius with a biting wind and the lads are sitting in front of 12 of our different sponsors advertising boards in their short-sleeved playing shirts. There is a lovely saying in cricket “I’d rather be out for 4 than at my desk at 9”,I’m definitely not sure about that when I think the lads will be playing Loughborough University in our first match of the season in two days time. All in all the players were out for about 90 minutes, whilst each sponsor board was changed by yours truly and they changed from white kit to YB40 kit to their t20 finery. They then had a couple of head and shoulder shots followed by posing in front of their sponsored cars, kindly provided by our official vehicle partner Rivervale. I’d love to say that our tough, rugged athletes just shrugged off the cold but I can’t. They were whingeing and moaning like little girls!! Fair play though, no-one should be playing cricket in this temperature. It takes me back to my Glamorgan playing days

in 1990, when it was black and white telly!! We went on a pre-season tour to Barbados and came back with a fantastic suntan. First game was a friendly v Cambridge University at Fenners. Snowed off!!!! I remember another pre-season match v Oxford University at the Parks when it was so cold that umpire Jack Hampshire phoned the ECB to see if there was a law in the rules and regulations about a minimum temperature that had to be exceeded before a game could commence. No such luck unfortunately. We lost the toss, they batted and we had to content ourselves with a tea-break every 45 minutes. That mug of tea was heaven, I never drunk any of it I just wanted to hold it for as long as possible. Anyway on to the summer, we do play Loughborough on Friday April 5th but our first home LV=Championship Match is v Warwickshire on May 1st. It might be a blessing having a few away games first as hopefully by the beginning of May the weather will have warmed up considerably, and we on the South Coast will benefit from a packed fixture list during the promised hot summer. We do have a Beer Festival during the 4 days of the Warwickshire Match ( 1st-4th May ) and during the already sold-out YB40 Match v Worcester on Sunday May 5th.

Sussex have a really strong squad this season and we are all hoping we can go a step further than last season, (when with three weeks to go we could have won all three Competitions) and bring some more silverware to the BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground. Hope to see you all there.

I’d love to say that our tough, rugged athletes just shrugged off the cold but I can’t. They were whingeing and moaning like little girls!

Thunder clinch playoff place The Worthing Thunder completed an emphatic season turnaround after securing an EBL playoff place by winning 6257 at the Brixton Topcats. The season started out badly with ten straight loses but after a turnaround in form the Thunder won their final ten games of the season to ensure a playoff quarter-final against the Bristol Academy Flyers.

to buzzing Brighton might be a bit of a culture shock, it takes Simon back to his early days in hotel career. He started out at a large central London hotel, working his way up from a waiter to a managerial role. Working in a London hotel meant that Simon soon learnt to expect the unexpected. One long term resident was the singer Courtney Love, who lived a slightly unconventional lifestyle. Room service was quite interesting with her lack of inhibition! From the vibrancy of London, Simon moved on to a hotel on Jersey that made Tunbridge Wells seem as cutting edge as New York. “It was a bit too quiet in Jersey,” recalls Simon, “but I learnt so much about fine dining and the importance of standards.” From there he moved to HDV Tunbridge Wells and his first taste of the responsibility of being the GM.

The Queen’s Speech

If I was

Queen of Brighton I wouldn’t let it go to my head, says Lizzy Bishop… except for the champagne that is! Rule Of My Reign No.1 - That at the beginning of each month the water fountains of this city, restored to serve all and any of our parched inhabitants, at any time of day, would spray high into the air the finest champagne to come raining down upon all us hedonists alike. Any of you ‘TSK TSK’-ers out there neighsaying this royal promotion of alcoholic indulgence will be reassured, back into your cotton wool cot-beds, to know that such and similar intoxicants will only flow under The Queen’s consent – simply regularly, never regularly excessively. And Rule Of My Reign No.2 That all such ‘Tsk Tsk’-ers, neigh-saying spoilsports and neggy-voicing doommongers (those bashers of modern youth, foreigners or unemployed persons or even small yappy dogs) you will all be condemned to a month’s waged labour as…as what? Street sweepers? Bus Drivers? Community Service Officers (whatever they may be)? No, nothing quite so noble. You will be granted the highest paid job in the land, you will be the doom-saying journalists of the Queen’s personal trashy-tabloid, the sole copy of which will be delivered to the bathroom door directly to the enthroned Queen as she settles down for her daily 3pm constitutional (it is true what

Jean-Paul says, 3pm is an abominable time, too early and yet seemingly too late to progress in anything! The Queen advises you all to do as she does and, at 3pm, poop*. She, that is, I, The Cutest Creature Ever to Crap Over Water, will gobble up the neigh-saying news with gusto, neutralizing its pessimism with my sunny and saintly disposition, and when done with the idle rot and gossip will wipe with it the Perfectly Peachy Royal Bottom and flush it down and away from sight once and for all. Rule Of My Reign No.2 brings us to Rule Of My Reign No.3. The old sewers will become public saunas, spas, water flumes and spouts, which will spill into the sea, the new dead-esque salty sea of the English Channel…why? Well what else will enable us to float on our backs to France for the latest fashion and fancy cakes! Don’t ask ‘how?’, neigh-sayers, don’t ask ‘why?’ – nod neigh-sayer, nod, because you don’t want the best paid job in the city, the job of tabloid tittle-tattler/royal toilet paper dispenser, because this job will be the only paid job in the land, for which you’ll receive wads upon wads of my paper face, stacks upon stacks of my copper face (enough to make greedy Scrooge McDuck green-billed in envy) and

exclusively for the vanity of your Most Benevolent Ruler. This Rule I grant to you, the people… rejoice sadomasochists rejoice, every month I give to you. I digress. Which leads us to Rule Of My Reign No. 4 Every occurrence of A Royal Digression dictates unto her people that they should down their chisels, their chalk, their pens, their pints and snog a stranger’s face off, not stopping until I blow my Royal Horn from the Palatial Balcony. ‘Hoorah for the meandering mind of Our Ditziest Tho Most Self-Sacrificing & Doting of Hot Mama Rulers!’ You will shout, postface-off-snog/blowing of the Royal Horn. Rule Of My Reign No.5 - I will bring back beach donkeys and trams, for Pete’s sake. *This is not a Rule Of My Reign. There are no Crap Rules Of My Reign.
