Our members benefit from the many features associated with a ‘members’ golf club. These include discounted bar prices, an excellent restaurant and a full programme of competitions, matches and social functions. We have reciprocal agreements with a selection of other ‘member’ clubs throughout Kent, where our members are able to play on weekdays at a reduced rate. Even more attractive, we get courtesy of the course, by prior arrangement, at 44 other members of the “1895 Club” throughout the UK and overseas.
Welcome to Bearsted Golf Club Bearsted Golf Club, which is a members club, was established in 1895. It is a superb parkland course set in the shadow of the North Downs in Kent, providing a good test of golfing ability to members and visitors alike. We welcome societies and green fee or match visitors and offer superb facilities and excellent food and drink in our clubhouse, which was built 2000. We welcome guests, societies and visiting teams to enjoy our splendid course and well-appointed clubhouse. The course stretches to 6,381 off the white tees, its par of 71 offering a fair test to golfers of all abilities. The greens, built to USGAspecifications, are renowned for their quality. Our club is situated on the outskirts of Maidstone, less than two miles from either Junction 7 or 8 off the M20, making it easily accessible from a wide area.

History of The Club Bearsted Golf Club dates back to 1895, originally a ninehole course, built on 52 acres of land owned by Sir George Hampson and known as Maidstone Golf Club. A keen golfer, Sir George became the first president of the club and was to be named Club Captain on no fewer than six occasions. In 1914, Bearsted Golf Club was set up and remained on the present site, while Maidstone Golf Club members moved to a new course in Oakwood Park where they lasted until closure in 1962. It is of interest that in 1891 another Maidstone Golf Club was formed at East Hampton, New York and still exists today. It is now one of the oldest and most exclusive golf clubs in the United States. The golf course has undergone many changes and improvements over the years, notably in 1923 when with the lease of more land the course was extended to 18-holes measuring 5,137 yards. To mark the occasion, an exhibition match was played between the great Harry Vardon (six times Open Champion) and Mark Seymour, the professional at Cobham. More than 200 people paid to watch the match, which Harr y Vardon & M

History of The Club Continued Other celebrities include Kent and England cricketing legends Godfrey Evans and Leslie Ames, who were resident in Bearsted. They showed their all-round sporting prowess by winning several golf competitions in the 1950s. A feature of Bearsted over the years has been our desire to continue improving both the on-course and off-course experience for members and visitors. A generous bequest by our neighbour and friend, Kath Seager, allowed us to build the spacious and welcoming clubhouse, which was opened in 2000.
Tom Page, Dai Rees & Peter Alliss
We regard ourselves as a progressive club having replaced all the greens in 1998/99, a new clubhouse in 2000 and Greenkeepers facility in 2008. This year solar panels were installed on the roof of the Greenkeepers facility; these will generate 250- kilowatt, which will also feed the clubhouse, with the surplus earning an income from the national grid. Our efforts were rewarded when the Kent Golf Union invited Bearsted Golf club to host the Kent Amateur Championship in June 2013.

Men The Men’s section at Bearsted is fairly strong, with two teams entered in the Kent League, which is a scratch competition featuring four pairs playing fourball betterball matchplay. Always played on a Sunday, matches are followed by a convivial dinner. Bearsted also takes part in the Guilford Trophy, a scratch team knockout throughout East Kent. There are many friendly matches, both men and mixed with other clubs in Kent. Generally, there are around 20 fixtures throughout the season, with the away matches providing the opportunity to enjoy some of the county’s other excellent courses. The friendly matches for the men are generally played on a Wednesday and the mixed matches on Sundays, with a dinner to follow. There are also five men’s and mixed knockout competitions

gather for a final play-off. In parallel with these league matches, there is a home and away knockout competition involving clubs throughout Kent. There are also 12 home and away friendly matches against local clubs with a lunch to follow. In addition, the Veterans Section run singles and pairs knockout competitions and at least seven major trophy competitions, one of the most popular being the Vets Open, which is a team competition and attracts entries from 30 clubs all over Kent. The Veterans Section also organise less formal ‘pound in the middle’ competitions on 2 Monday mornings a month.
Seniors
Otherwise its roll up, mix up and play most Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.
The Over-60s and Over-70s also enjoy league competition. Home and away matches, played on weekdays, take place against Gillingham, Mid-Kent, Rochester and Cobham, Redlibbets, Sheerness and Sittingbourne. The format is fourball betterball, with 5 pairs playing off a maximum handicap of 18 and 21 respectively. At the end of the season, there are two further events; the first is when all the teams in the respective leagues gather at one of the clubs for an ‘End of Season Jamboree’, the winner being the team with the highest aggregate stableford score; the second event is when the respective winners of the 60s and 70s leagues

Golf at Bearsted Continued Ladies The Ladies enjoy around 16 matches (eight home, eight away) through the golfing season from March to early November, several of which are longstanding fixtures. Most matches are fourball betterball, but some feature singles play. Good company and good golf is the order of the day, with enjoyment of paramount importance. A light meal tends to follow the competition. The county’s premier competitions are well supported, with teams entered in the Bradley Cook, a five-a-side scratch team knockout tournament played in handicap order, and the Coombe Cup for golfers over the age of 68, a trophy which was won by the club in 2011.

Please note that adherence to our dress code and soft spikes only rule is a condition of entry.
We usually run five Open events each year, where golfers with a current active handicap are warmly invited to enter. These events are very popular and you are advised to submit your entry early. Places are usually allocated on a first come first served basis. First up is the Veteran’s Open, generally held in the middle of May. This is an 18-hole Stableford competition for teams of three visitors plus one Bearsted member, with the two best scores on each hole to count. The Bearsted Open, held in early July, is a Kent Order of Merit event played as a 36-hole medal for players with a handicap of 18 or below. There are prizes for the best scratch and handicap score.

Tour the Course In two loops of nine holes, our mature parkland course unusually starts and finishes with a par 3. The first is a gentle opening hole, but look out for the railway running along the right. Indeed, all the early holes require solid tee shots, and generally favour the player who draws the ball, as most of the trouble is found on the right of many fairways.
Our greens are all constructed to USGA specification. Our tees have circular distance mark plates set into the ground, and our

Hole 1 (Railway) 144 yards, par 3 Our course starts with a short par three with a difficult green sloping down from the bank on the
Hole 2 (Old School) 342 yards, par 4 A difficult blind drive on this straight par four hole, with out of bounds on the left and trouble waiting in the trees on the right.
Hole 3 (Sir George Hampson) 462 yards, par 4 A very long left-to-right dogleg hole which is difficult to reach in two shots, especially with two fairway bunkers waiting to catch out your second shot.
34 | www.bearstedgolfclub.co.uk
Hole 4 (Honeyhill Woods) 433 yards, par 4 A good drive will leave you well placed to reach the green with your second shot. However, mind the ditch and out of bounds on the right.
Hole 5 (The Shaw) 363 yards, par 4 A straight fairway to the green, but with a ditch hazard to the right. Please play a provisional ball if you think your tee shot may have gone into the woods on the right, but you must play your original ball if you find it.
Hole 6 (The Hump) 508 yards, par 5 A long par five sloping from left to right, with longer grass and small ditch (not classed as a hazard) strategically placed to help stop your ball from going into the woods - surprisingly, on the right again. Please play a provisional ball if you think your tee shot may have gone into the woods on the right, but you must play your original ball if you find it.

Tour the Course Continued Hole 7 (Up And Over) 388 yards, par 4 A right to left dogleg to the green located in the valley, where the trees to the left often block out a second shot to the green.
Hole 8 (Downs View) 178/214 yards, par 3 This par three involves a tee shot across a valley to the well-guarded green.
Hole 9 (Halfway) 379 yards, par 4 This very inviting hole is frequently used for the longest drive competitions, but be careful. Out of bounds awaits a loose tee shot to the left, as does the pond on the right.
36 | www.bearstedgolfclub.co.uk
Hole 10 (Twin Oaks) 295 yards, par 4 A relatively short par four with the green just beyond the two tall trees in the distance.
Hole 11 (Centenary Bridge) 324 yards, par 4 A dogleg right with a very inviting tee shot down the hill, and over the stream and bridge. Beware of the ponds either side of the fairway.
Hole 12 (Water Meadow) 399 yards, par 4 A good straight drive is called for on this very long par 4 hole, with trouble again waiting for a loose tee shot to the right and the pond on the right for the long hitters.

Practice Facilities We have excellent practice facilities for those looking to work on lowering their handicap. Coupled with the tuition offered by our Professional, it represents the complete game improvement programme. As visitors take the short walk from the car park to the clubhouse they cannot help but notice the immaculately prepared practice putting green in front of the clubhouse. This is the perfect way to acclimatise oneself to the superb USGAspecification greens. For those wishing to practice the long game there is a practice area to the rear of the clubhouse between the 2nd and 9th fairways. At either end of the practice ground there are greens with bunkers to work on perfecting those up and downs or sand saves, which can make the difference between an average round and a very good one. A pair of practice nets can be found by the members’ car park, which are ideal for getting loose before taking to the course.
