Welcome Bedford & County Golf Club, located just north of Bedfordshire’s county town, offers a spectacular golfing challenge suitable for all skill levels.
For those looking to improve their game, tuition is available from our professional team, led by Steve Vinnicombe, and we have some excellent practice facilities.
Our par-70 championship course is ranked as a “gem” by the website www.top100golfcourses.co.uk which describes it as “a varied and testing course which is very well cared for and presented superbly at all times of the year. Bedford & County boasts one of the hardest par 4s in the country as well as excellent greens.”
Our club celebrated its centenary in 2012 and embarks on a second century with relish. We are particularly keen to encourage more golfers to our already thriving membership across all sections, including ladies and juniors.
The club is run by the members for the members. We are proud of our reputation as a friendly and welcoming club and visiting golfers can expect a warm welcome in our spacious clubhouse, where a well-stocked bar and first class home-cooked food provide a perfect accompaniment to your round of golf.
Bedford and County is committed to introducing juniors to our sport and to growing the game. We have achieved the higher award of GolfMark in recognition of the club’s work in attracting juniors to both learn and to play the game of golf. We continue to promote the philosophy that golf is a positive and beneficial experience for young people. Whatever your age, come and see for yourself what you are missing. We will be delighted to welcome you and to show you around.

History The Golf Club was established in 1912 and is a classic parkland design located in the north Bedfordshire countryside. The course was originally part of the Clapham Park estate, farmed by Lancelot Clark. For some years prior to 1912, Clark would invite friends and colleagues to hit golf balls onto primitive greens, roughly cut and wired off from grazing sheep. On Friday 1st March 1912, the first 9 hole course was opened and named Clapham Park Golf Links. On Saturday 27th April 1912, the links were officially opened with a 36 hole exhibition match by Charles B. MacFarlane, the celebrated Scottish amateur champion from Prestwick.
6 - Bedford and Country Golf Club
Lancelot Clark, together with G.P.MacFarlane laid down a new 18 hole course, which was opened in May 1913 with an exhibition between MacFarlane and George Duncan, who went on to win The Open Championship in 1920. Although very different to the present layout, the course was on the same footprint as at present. At this time, the club was re-named Mid-Bedfordshire Golf Course at Clapham. During World War 1, the course closed and was used by The Bedfordshire Regiment. In September 1920, a match took place between George Duncan (current Open Champion) partnering James Braid (5 times Open Champion) representing Scotland against J.H. Taylor (5 times Open
Champion) and Abe Mitchell representing England. With the lead changing hands several times, Mitchell put his tee shot 2 feet from the pin on the par 3, 18th hole to halve the match with a birdie. Following on from this match, J.H. Taylor, together with Fredrick George Hawtree, undertook one of his first golf course design commissions in the re-construction of our course. A new golf pavilion opened in 1921 followed by the newly completed course on the 26th April 1923. The layout was much the same as it is today and saw the introduction of bunkers to the course.
On the 25th March 1926, the club changed hands and was restructured under the present name of Bedford & County Golf Club with ÂŁ1 shares being issued to members. At this time, a 14 year old Henry Longhurst was learning his golfing skills under the Club Professional George Muggleton. Henry remained a member of the club until going up to Clare College, Cambridge. The Club progressed but through the Second World War a large part of the course (holes 6th through to 15th) was requisitioned by the War Agricultural Committee and saw the erection of Nissen huts for use by the R.A.F. and W.A.A.F.

History
(Continued)
After the war, the course was in a pretty poor state and it was only through the laborious work of members under the guidance of Jack Simons, the Head Greenkeeper, that 9 holes were restored and allowed golf to be played although under somewhat primitive conditions. It was not until June 1952 that the full 18 hole course was fully restored and officially opened by Dai Rees with an exhibition match including Alan Mawson, the Club’s professional and Leslie Day the Club’s leading amateur.
Over the past 50 years, the focus has been on enhancing the course and facilities for members and visitors, with improved drainage, especially to the greens, extending the tees to enable year-round usage, a new clubhouse and raising overall standards to levels that modern golfing demands. The current members and Committee are determined to maintain the Club’s reputation as the finest club and course in the area.

The Course The course at Bedford & County is regarded as one of the finest in the area, and our par-70 layout has staged some notable national and local tournaments, including the English Girls’ National Championships. We were also selected by the Bedford County Golf Union to host the County and Colts Championships in 2012, our centenary year. The combination over the past century of attention to detail, mature woodland and an undulating landscape means that the course’s established tree-lined fairways, strategically placed bunkers and manicured greens – many full of subtle breaks and borrows – provide a genuine challenge to golfers of all handicaps. The standard of upkeep and level of care and dedication shown by the greenkeeping staff, in all seasons and weather, has made Bedford & County a connoisseurs’ course. Each hole is named – a reminder of the heritage of the club. The most challenging of all is the 15th, The Waafery, which is amongst the toughest par-4 holes in the country. There is also a brook that often catches out the unwary as it meanders through the 7th, 10th, 11th and 15th.
The course measures 6,420 yards, par 70, for the men from the championship tees, 6,039 yards (also par 70) from the yellow tees and 5,641 yards for the ladies, who play the tough par-4 4th, 11th and 15th as par 5s. The Standard Scratch Score is the same as par for men and ladies, a testament to how good a test of golf this is. With five par-threes, there is no shortage of choices for nearest the pin competitions, one of many reasons why we represent an excellent choice of venue for golfing societies. Our lush parkland setting is a joy to play, but it comes with a price to pay for the errant golfer. Because it is tree-lined and with the boundary of the course to the right-hand side on several holes, this is a layout where slicers need to keep their overriding shot tendencies under some degree of control or face the consequences! “Accuracy is paramount here because it’s quite penal off the tee and the greens are smaller than most,” says Head Professional Steve Vinnicombe. “So you need to be a very good driver of the ball and a good wedge player.”

Take the Course Tour We hope you enjoy your time with us at Bedford & County Golf Club. Here are a few handy tips and course notes from our PGA Professional Steve Vinnicombe which should help you make the most of your round if you have never visited us before. • Hole 1 (Orchard) 348 yards, par 4 A challenging par 4, slight dog leg right, requiring a drive to the top of the hill, ideally left of centre of the fairway for a clear view of the green with bunkers left and right. Avoid a tee shot leaking right as you will either be blocked out by the hedgerow or worse still – out of bounds. There was originally an orchard sited to the right of the competition tee, adjacent to the farm – hence the name.
12 - Bedford and Country Golf Club
• Hole 2 (Punch Bowl) 192 yards, par 3 The second longest of the par threes - with a well-protected undulating green with a narrow entry guarded by bunkers left and right. Correct club selection is key as there is heavy grass and small copse beyond the green. The name Punch Bowl is derived from the green’s original contours. • Hole 3 (Blasted Ash) 396 yards, par 4 A good drive is the key to success on this apparently straightforward hole with out of bounds down the right and established trees and a well positioned bunker to the left. Care is required with the second shot to avoid the greenside bunkers left and right. The Blasted Ash is situated at the back of the 4th tee, left and short of the 3rd green.
• Hole 4 (College Farm) 464 yards, par 4 Again a good tee shot is essential on one of the longest par 4s on the course. A drive favouring the left of the fairway, thereby avoiding the trees and shrubs to the right, should provide a view of the wellguarded green. For the ladies this hole is a par 5. College Farm is situated to the right of the fairway and is accessed by the track which crosses it, although the original farm and buildings were replaced by a house some years ago. • Hole 5 (May Tree) 145 yards, par 3 One of the shortest holes on the course but no easy touch – numerous hazards (bunkers, grass bunker and mound) await any off-line tee shot. Study your line well as the green has more breaks than you might
think. The May Tree is situated to the left-hand side of the tee as you face the green. • Hole 6 (Little Pastures) 527 yards, par 5 The first of the par 5s starts with a tee shot over Scots Pines! A good drive just inside the right-hand bunker should run on to the centre of the fairway and could offer the option to go for the green but again beware of the bunkers left and right. Little Pastures is a reference to years gone by when the hole used to be flanked a number of small pastures.
Bedford and Country Golf Club

Take the Course Tour • Hole 7 (Brook) 419 yards, par 4 A tough par 4 with well-placed fairway bunkers looking to gobble up any wayward drives. The second shot is over a brook to an elevated green which slopes from back to front and is flanked by bunkers left and right. The brook which runs through this hole (as well as the 10th, 11th and 15th) is not actually evident from the tee. • Hole 8 (Twin Woods) 323 yards, par 4 The shortest of the par 4s but with trees and a fairly deep bunker to the right and heavy rough to the left, and another bunker, a straight tee shot is a must. A line just inside the left-hand fairway bunker should leave you with a relatively short iron approach, but, once again, try and avoid those greenside bunkers. Twin Woods airfield is situated beyond

(Continued)
the course boundary and it was from here that Glenn Miller made his fateful flight in 1944. • Hole 9 (Simons Folly) 203 yards, par 3 The longest par 3 on the course and probably the most challenging. Take plenty of club to make sure that you clear the large bunker in front of the green. A tee shot leaked either left or right is likely to find the trees. The hole is named as a memorial to one the club’s former greenkeepers, Jack Simons. • Hole 10 (Long Tom) 559 yards, par 5 The tenth hole is comfortably the longest on the course and this is especially so from the medal tee. An accurate drive is required to avoid
the keenly-placed fairway bunker on the left and a line of trees to the right. The brook meanders through the fairway approximately 100 yards from the elevated two-tiered green, where finding the correct level is imperative. Long Tom is well deserving of its name. • Hole 11 (Dog Leg) 452 yards, par 4 This lengthy par 4 dog legs left so favour the right centre of the fairway off the tee to avoid being blocked out by the trees on the left, making sure that you avoid the fairway bunker on the extreme right of the fairway at the start of the dog leg. The undulating green is guarded by bunkers left and right and runs off at the back. For the ladies this hole is a par 5.
• Hole 12 (Baulk) 148 yards, par 3 Many a scorecard has been dented by this relatively innocuous-looking par 3 with a large bunker in front of the green. The upturned saucershaped green has banks on either side and falls away sharply at the back. Baulk is the area beyond the green where the 13th tee is situated which used to contain RAF billets.

Take the Course Tour • Hole 13 (Spinney) 387 yards, par 4 The bunkers left and right of the fairway await any poorlydirected drives – as do a variety of trees for shots further offline. Longer hitters may fancy trying to ‘cut the corner’ on this right dog leg hole. The green is, once again, protected by bunkers left and right. Spinney is a reference to the sizeable spinney which there used to be to the left of the fairway from the tee which was originally much larger and more dense than it is now. • Hole 14 (Three Threes) 360 yards, par 4 A good drive between the bunkers should leave a relatively short approach to a well-bunkered green full of subtle borrows. However, any wayward tee shot is likely to be punished as there are few ‘alternative routes’ to the green. The name Three Threes refer to the fact that, before it was lengthened some 30 or so years ago, this hole was originally 333 yards long.
(Continued)
• Hole 15 (Waafery) 470 yards, par 4 An outstanding par 4 demanding two well-hit shots if the green is to be reached in regulation. If the distance isn’t challenge enough the hungry greenside bunkers and sharply sloped green, back to front, will be! Once again beware of the brook, this time it’s approximately 140 yards from the green. For the ladies this hole is a par 5. During World War II the area to the right of the 15th (as far as the road) contained a number of buildings occupied by the WAAF. Although this is primarily used as a tree nursery now, remnants of the old guard house still remain. • Hole 16 (Firs) 182 yards, par 3 Another tee shot over Scots Pine to a green that’s always further beyond the trees than it appears from the tee. Hungry bunkers are positioned front of the green, left and right, and the edge of the green is banked beyond them.

Take the Course Tour • Hole 17 (Tinsley) 354 yards, par 4 Not a long par 4 but accuracy off the tee is again essential with trees left and right (and out of bounds beyond). The fairway also slopes left to right. A good tee shot should leave a medium/short iron to another of those undulating, bunker-guarded greens! Tinsley is the name of the family who farmed north of Clapham.
(Continued)
• Hole 18 (Home) 491 yards, par 5 A gentle par 5 dog leg to finish but beware the sizeable bunker right, just short of the brow of the hill, (the fairway slopes heavily left to right) and a green which slopes front to back. Longer hitters may be able to get over the brow of the hill in order to set up a good birdie chance and finish their round in style.

Both provide excellent opportunities for new lady members to meet and play with other ladies.

Members’ Golf Members at Bedford & County Golf Club can look forward to an active golfing calendar throughout the season, both in terms of major competitions or more fun formats against fellow members, or representing the club in matches against some of the other leading clubs in the area. The beauty of the handicap system is that it allows players of differing abilities to compete on an equal footing and still enjoy a game to the full. Good golf cannot always be guaranteed, but good company is never in short supply and the setting is truly special. MEN The Men enter two teams in the Bedford County Golf Union’s Summer Scratch League, each playing in different divisions. Although not mandatory, the league encourages the selection of younger players by clubs that enter a second team in the competition so that the next generation of golfers can gain valuable competitive experience. Matches – featuring teams of five golfers playing off scratch – are played home and away against other clubs in the division, with active promotion and relegation at the end of the season meaning that fixtures are meaningful all season long and always keenly contested.
Interest is maintained right through the year by the club playing in the Winter Scratch Foursomes League featuring home and away matches against three other local clubs. Within the club, monthly medals are held on Saturdays, Sundays and during the week, with Wednesday Medals starting in mid-April and running right through to the end of September. There are also a host of honours board competitions and other trophies to be contested throughout the season, some featuring knockout formats, others to be won on the day, some for individuals, others for pairs. While the competitive element is always thrilling, it is not the be-alland-end-all for many golfers at this level and the club prides itself on the amount of social golf on offer to members. One of the most popular gatherings is the casual round of golf played together by men and ladies played late afternoon on a Friday during the summer months and followed by a light supper.

The men have informal roll-ups held during the early afternoon almost every day of the week so if you like casual golf turn up at the club and you will always have someone to play with. Partners are drawn, which is always an excellent way for new members to quickly become integrated into the club. The social side to golf at Bedford & County cannot be over emphasised and can perhaps best be appreciated in the shape of the several traditional matches enjoyed over the course of the season by the members. The President and the Vice-President field teams against one another and the Captain does likewise against the Vice- Captain. The club and Past Captains also meet and higherhandicappers and lowerhandicappers battle for supremacy and bragging rights in the Rabbits v Tigers match.
with the game being held the following Sunday morning. Friends off the course on a Friday become friendly opponents on a Sunday, with everyone looking to do their best but most importantly have an enjoyable time. SENIORS The Seniors are a very important section of the club who love their golf and can be found enjoying a game most days. Like their younger male counterparts, they hold frequent roll-ups throughout the week, though the seniors tend to go out in the morning. There are also casual gettogethers at weekends when no competition is being hosted. The Seniors Section play against other clubs most weeks, if not twice a week, with home and away fixtures against 15 clubs throughout the year. The Seniors also compete in a single division scratch league with five other clubs, alternating home and away venues each year.
These are not just games of golf, however, they are great social occasions. A dinner is held on a Friday night, where partners are drawn,

LADIES The Ladies are a very friendly group who always make new members feel most welcome. Ladies’ mornings are held every Wednesday throughout the year, with a draw for partners and a reserved tee slot. This is an excellent opportunity for new lady members to meet and play with other ladies. Monthly medals and Stableford events are enjoyed throughout the season as well as a good selection of knock-out competitions, with some of these dating back to the early years of the club. For medals in the summer there are two time slots early morning and six slots late morning available for ladies. Senior Ladies’ mornings, for those over 55 years of age, are held on the first Monday morning in every month. These are good ways to meet and play with different people. Matches are played against other clubs. The Lady Captain chooses the team from those ladies who put their names down for selection and with
friendly fixtures as well as the more serious league environment there is plenty of scope to allow anyone who wishes to experience the thrill of representing their club to do so. The Ladies also actively support competitions run by the county and field teams in both the Bedfordshire County Ladies’ Golf Association’s Scratch League and Handicap Leagues. Scratch League features teams of three players from the Silver Division, while Handicap League matches are played off full handicap by seven golfers a side. There is also an active mixed golf section at Bedford & County with both casual gatherings to enjoy a game of golf between friends at the club or club matches, which are more about enjoying the social experience rather than winning or losing and afford the opportunity to play on some of the other fine courses in the area.

JUNIORS Bedford & County has a growing junior section which the club is keen to expand further and there are membership opportunities available for younger players eager to take up the game having seen it on television or for those wishing to expand on skills they already possess.
The professional team also takes the game into local schools, teaching pupils using the popular Tri-Golf and SNAG golf equipment.
The Club has achieved the higher award of GolfMark in recognition of the work it undertakes to promote junior golf. Juniors classes are run by the Head Professional and his team on Sundays from 9am-10am. The club follows the Junior Golf Passport programme, a comprehensive, progressive, structured programme where youngsters learn through a series of skillbased activities. This enables juniors to acquire the all-important basics which are the building blocks of the game. It includes a series of achievable targets and information about the rules and etiquette of golf.
Please call 01234 352617 if you require more details about becoming a junior member.
As your child progresses and grows in confidence, individual lessons can be booked at the club.

Information for Visitors Bedford & County Golf Club welcomes unaccompanied visitors and those playing the course with a member throughout the week. Visitors are always assured of an excellent round of golf and a warm welcome in our clubhouse and bar. We are a fairly relaxed club, but we do ask visitors to respect our rules and standard golfing etiquette to ensure their visit runs as smoothly as possible.
All visitors not accompanied by a member may be required to show a valid handicap certificate on registering at the Pro Shop. At the very least, we do prefer golfers to be of a sufficient standard for them to be able to enjoy their round and for them not to inconvenience other players when out on the course. Golf buggies and trolleys are available to hire for those wishing to conserve their energy to enjoy their round to the full.
In common with other clubs we do request that visitors abide by our dress code both on the course and in the clubhouse, specific details of which can be found on our website, www.bandcgc.co.uk
The club offers special twilight rates in the summer for those able to play later in the day when the course is at its quietest and we offer an all-day rate which represents outstanding value, particularly on weekdays.
The use of mobile telephones is not permitted inside the main club lounge, dining room, Thornton Suite or on any part of the golf course.
From the Summer of 2014, visitors are able to book tee times at off-peak hours through the website ‘Teeofftimes’ or directly through the club’s own website, www.bandcgc.co.uk

Clubhouse and Restaurant You don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy our facilities, but you can always be sure of a warm and friendly welcome in the cosy and comfortable clubhouse. It really is a most agreeable setting with views out over the closing hole and across the rest of the course. We are fully licensed with a selection of draught and bottled beers and also have a selection of fine wines, together with an extensive range of refreshing soft drinks.
As well as the large bar area, we also have a small 32-seater restaurant which is the perfect size for dining after society days and club matches and is also available for private hire. Sitting out on the balcony with a cooling drink is a favoured spot on warm summer days as golfers finish up their rounds down the last.
Our catering is now in-house under the expertise of Jonathan Goodwin who was previously at The Birch in Woburn and the Michelin starred La Gavroche in London. Hot and cold food is served daily seven days a week. The menu is extensive and varied during the day and we can offer anything from a simple plate of chips right the way up to a full sit-down meal.
