Welcome Betchworth Park Golf Club nestles under the North Downs overlooked by the legendary Box Hill beauty spot. Founded in 1911 and laid out by the distinguished golf course architect Harry S. Colt, this parkland course offers 18 holes of delightful but challenging golf.
Betchworth Park is a members’ club run for the benefit of members and visitors. Any profit made by the Club is invested in improving yet further the quality of the course and clubhouse facilities. All sections at Betchworth Park enjoy an extensive programme of golf throughout the year. All levels of golfer are welcome and prospective members can look forward to social golf, club competitions, inter-club matches and county events. Instruction is available from our PGA-qualified teaching professionals.
The Club also runs an Academy for those new to golf or returning to the game. The Academy develops players so they can gain a handicap and attain the standard required for full membership. Visitors are always welcome and there are a variety of attractive packages on offer for societies or you can build your own to suit your needs and your budget. The clubhouse and dining room provide a great venue for private functions and parties. Facilities are also available for small business conferences and meetings. We look forward to welcoming you to our club and promise you a memorable experience, both on our magnificent course and off it.

History Established in 1911, Betchworth Park Golf Club was built on land originally leased to the club by Lord Francis Hope of Deepdene House. Harry S. Colt was engaged as the course architect, which was an inspired choice, as he would go on to design many great courses including Sunningdale and Wentworth.
The course itself was opened in September 1913, with a clubhouse that was accessed from Punchbowl Lane, and with a limit of 200 men and 50 lady members. Harry Vardon, who would go on and win his sixth Open Championship the following year, played the course on its opening day with a group of celebrities. Vardon remarked favourably on the Colt design as did Bernard Darwin, the golf correspondent of The Times.
Like many of its counterparts, Betchworth Park suffered during and immediately after the Second World War. But gradually the Club got back on its feet, building a new clubhouse in 1966. The Seventies were memorable for the visit of stars from the world of sport and entertainment for a gala charity event and golf clinics from Ryder Cup stars such as Max Faulkner, Dai Rees and Brian Barnes also proved a hit. The most significant event of recent years, however, occurred in 2006 when, after years of negotiation, the Club secured the freehold of the land, ensuring the future of Betchworth Park for generations to come.

The Course The course at Betchworth Park is maintained to a very high standard and has been kept as close as possible to the original 1911 design of Harry Colt. Changes have been made over the years to accommodate the moving of the clubhouse and because of the need to lengthen the course as technological development has led to the improvement in golf equipment. The first three holes stretch away from the clubhouse and offer magnificent views to the south and east. The signature par-4 fourth then drops down to the undulating valley floor, offering a thrilling tee shot and some wonderful views. Colt’s characteristic fairway bunkers are in evidence on most holes. While being a pleasure to putt on, many of the greens are undulating and need careful reading and good control of speed of putt.
The second nine works around the outside of the course with challenges and views all the way. The uphill par-3 13th is a particularly memorable hole, while the 14th is a glorious dog-leg par 4 with a burn running across the front of the green. The final three holes offer a terrific finish to the round, offering rewards and challenges in equal measure and require strong concentration to keep a good score intact. The courses stretches to 6,325 yards off the white championship tees, with the Standard Scratch Score of 71 – two more than the par of 69 – a fair indication of how good a test of golf this is. The par from the red tees is 70, the ladies receiving an extra shot at the 17th, a difficult par 4 for the men.

We have embraced the growing awareness in recent years from golf’s governing bodies of wildlife conservation on areas of the course not in play. The result has been spectacular with not only a beautiful course to walk, but an abundance of wildlife. Bird spotters will delight at sightings of partridges, woodpeckers and nuthatches, as well as migrant warblers in the spring. Rabbits, weasels and stoats also abound, while our proximity to Box Hill brings us butterflies. We truly believe there is not a weak hole among the 18 and would be delighted for you to come play the course and see for yourself. Everyone will have their own favourite holes, and the following quartet offer a flavour of what is in store: Hole 3, 414 yards, par 4 The third is a terrific driving hole and very picturesque with views ahead and to the right as you walk the fairway. From the high tee, the fairway bunkers act like magnets to the golfer who tries to cut off too much of the corner. And there’s a pot bunker on the left of the fairway about 40 yards short of the green to stop you running the ball in. Despite all this and the right-hand greenside bunker that’s about two metres deep, the hole only warrants a stroke index of nine, so two well-struck shots will see you on to the green that slopes from front to back. Those slopes mean you will not be given many putts on this green.
Hole 14, 405 yards, par 4 This is a terrific dog leg left that rewards a draw, but penalizes a fade for right-handers, and the trees on the left will catch you out if you if you bite off too much with your drive. The fairway slopes severely down the hill in the direction of the hole, so catch the hill and watch that ball kick left and on down in the desired direction. If you don’t catch the hill you face a dilemma, because there’s a stream that runs across the fairway about 20 yards short of the green. Do you lay up and rely on your short game, or go for it and risk ending in the stream? The green itself slopes from back to front and is protected left and right by bunkers, so weigh up your options and take care. Hole 16, 411 yards, par 4 Stroke index four, the sixteenth has ruined many a round. From the white and yellow tees, the tree on the right makes the drive intimidating and narrow. A draw here is not an option as the woods on the left fall away down a steep bank to the River Mole. The marker post is the best line being right on the corner of the dog-leg left, so a good drive will reap its rewards by opening up the green for a short iron in. Even then the danger is still on the left with severe rough and a strong hook will end up in the river. A beautiful hole, but an intimidating one. A par here will put a smile on your face for the rest of the day.
Hole 4, 439 yards, par 4 The fourth is the signature hole at Betchworth Park. The high tee offers views as far as the South Downs on a clear day, and if you look straight ahead the windmill on Reigate Heath can easily be seen. The hole itself appears straightforward, but take note of the stroke index of one and don’t be fooled by appearances. Harry Colt placed five of his trademark fairway bunkers just where he knew you’d go, and there’s out of bounds both left and right. Greenside bunkers give protection to the green, but Colt was always fair, so hit the ball straight and you’ll be rewarded.

Practice Facilities The practice facilities at Betchworth Park are amongst the finest in Surrey and for those able to find the time they represent a magnificent opportunity to work on all areas of one’s game and to lower one’s handicap.
For perfecting the scoring side of the game there is a dedicated short game area with a practice bunker and chipping area and a very nice putting green can be found right in front of the clubhouse.
There is a driving range which is played off grass for most of the year, allowing for more meaningful practice. The dedicated golfer can learn much about their swing simply by watching the trajectory of the ball and studying the shape and depth of their divot. The range is kept open throughout the winter on artificial mats and is often a hive of activity on all but the most inclement days, especially since free range balls are offered as part of the standard membership. You don’t even have to go and pick your balls up, although there is an area for members to practise with their own balls as well.
For those wishing to warm up quickly before a game there are two brand new and well-maintained nets.

Becoming A Member Betchworth Park is a traditional members’ club run for the benefit of the members, with the members playing a key role in the future direction of the club. We are renowned as a friendly club and welcome membership enquiries. Membership is open to all upon application – you do not need to know anyone already at the club. We make a point of ensuring new members are made to feel a part of the club from the day they join. Immediately they feel comfortable and quickly find themselves part of a regular group of friends. Competitive golfers can achieve an official CONGU handicap recognised worldwide, and play in regular competitions both with their fellow members and against other clubs.
As well as the traditional and most popular seven and five-day memberships, we also offer a flexible alternative called Associate Membership aimed at those people who find it difficult to commit to being a full-time golfer due to time or financial constraints. Associate Membership buys a specified number of points to be used any time throughout the year. Points are allocated depending on what time of day and time of the week is chosen, so is particularly appealing to those who play only occasionally and are able to play at off-peak times. Children and young adults benefit from fantastic rates here at Betchworth Park, while still enjoying all the benefits of full membership for just a fraction of the cost. Members are able to follow club results on the internet for free through the popular HowDidiDo website.
