Welcome to Bewl Valley Sailing Club
Bewl Valley Sailing Club prides itself on being a very friendly club extending a warm welcome to members, their guests and visiting sailors from the South East and further afield. Throughout the year we have an active sailing programme with club racing most weekends, open meetings through the year and cruising on over 700 acres of water on the borders of Kent and Sussex. With a very active training school and varied social programme too, there is never a dull moment, the club is constantly buzzing. Although the club was founded in 1967 active sailing was not possible until 1977. Today over 30 years later we have some 1200 members of all ages, sailing a wide range of boats from out and out racers, to those that prefer to just potter. Bewl Valley Sailing Club is a dinghy and windsurfer sailing club. Our aim is to promote sailing for dinghy and board sailors and provide high quality training and development for members from beginners to the highest levels of sailing. Some of our sailors go on to compete nationally and internationally. Being a natural reservoir there is wonderful scenery and a wide range of wildlife – all this in addition to superb sailing on the largest area of inland water in South East England. With all the latest facilities, our clubhouse is the perfect place to meet fellow sailors and take in the stunning views of the reservoir. We look forward to welcoming you.

The Clubhouse
Our bright and modern clubhouse is the hub of the club. Upstairs, we have a bar and galley serving hot and cold food on Saturdays & Sundays throughout the year. We also cater for special events, and we open on Wednesday evenings from May to September for our regular summer Wednesday programme. With fantastic panoramic views over the reservoir from the large windows and two large balconies, the clubhouse is the ideal place to relax with friends, just take time to enjoy the view or even catch up on e-mail using our Wi-Fi access. In the summer months, venturing outside the clubhouse, there is plenty of space for picnics. The clubhouse is open every day (except Christmas Day) and has large changing rooms (complete with hot showers to warm you up on cold winter days!), a number of training rooms, first aid facilities and our helpful and friendly office staff are on hand to welcome members and non-members alike – answering questions or sorting out problems. We have ample free car parking space and cars can be used to tow boats to and from the water’s edge. The boat parks can accommodate 1500 boats, so there is plenty of room for new members’ boats. Launching is from concrete slipways or, if preferred, the large beach areas. There is a pontoon for keel boat classes such as Flying Fifteens and for the fleet of modern safety boats. The clubhouse is also available for hire to members for functions and special events. We have a selection of menus at different prices. If you are interested in function hire, please contact the office initially to discuss availability and costs on 01892 890930.

Membership
Membership of Bewl Valley is not just about racing. There are plenty of opportunities for those who enjoy just being on the water. You don’t even have to be a boat owner or an accomplished sailor to join us; we have a RYA recognised Training Centre where you can learn to sail and windsurf and we have a small fleet of club boats that members can hire. As well as sailing, we have a wide variety of social activities throughout the year that caters for all ages. Young sailors are most welcome and the club runs events especially for them and encourages their participation in all sailing and social events. All classes of dinghy (without cabins or motors) not exceeding an overall length of 6.2m for monohulls, and 5.5m for multihulls, and not displacing more than 700 kilos unmanned can be sailed at Bewl. We have very active fleets of Flying Fifteens, RS, Lasers and Solos, but we also have over 190 other classes of dinghy at Bewl ranging from Optimists to Trimarans.

Sailing At Bewl
Sailing at Bewl is far more than racing or cruising. We have several active fleets catering for everyone from Windsurfers to Flying Fifteens. As a member you can sail during any club sailing session (mainly Saturday and Sundays throughout the year and Wednesdays over the summer months together with most school holidays) with the confidence that a support boat will be on hand to rescue you should you need it. Outside these times, those with a specific qualification from the RYA or those that have passed our club “competent helm” test can sail any day of the year except Christmas Day. In fact, on some sunny winter days you can be lucky enough to have the whole 700+ acres to yourself and a few geese! Each year we run events especially catering for families and our youth. SCAMPS weekends offer an opportunity to camp and sail at Bewl three times a year and are extremely popular, and our Youth Week and Family Week offer a great “staycation” for members keen to spend a week of fun.

Racing At Bewl
Racing is the heart of our club activities and is organised and managed by members for members, young and old. There’s something for everyone giving members an opportunity to participate at whatever level their sailing takes them. We encourage new members and those new to dinghy racing to “have a go” through our Start Racing sessions, run throughout the year. Windsurfers race regularly on Saturday afternoons, and we run a comprehensive programme of Sunday club dinghy racing all of the year round – we even have racing on Boxing Day with our famous “Boxing Day Bottle” that shakes away those winter cobwebs and burns a few excess calories! In addition to club activities we have regular open events for specific fleets or groups throughout the year, giving visitors access to our fantastic lake and giving us a chance to compete with members of other clubs. We also host a range of National Championships and special events for certain fleets, when the best of the best come to compete on our wonderful lake. Our race management teams are made up of qualified club race officers and assistants who perform their duties on a rota basis. We are always looking for new talent in this area, so if you are interested in having a go at race management please contact the office on 01892 890930.

Youth At Bewl
Although we have members from all age groups, our Youth fleet is one of the largest groups at Bewl and our most important. We run a wide range of activities aimed at our Youth whether or not they own their own boat. These range from “Fun on the Water” with games and activities for all, through our regular “Saturday Club” that offers a mixture of fun and training for youngsters, to major events like “Youth Week” where families can camp at the club and participate in a range of activities, including our popular “Youth Regatta”. In addition to these we offer comprehensive training and coaching with courses and other events catering for all levels of ability. Our racing has an active youth fleet and our Topper and Optimists fleets are active (and successful!) on the home circuit around the South of England. All our youth activities are well organised and our highly qualified training school or support boat teams are available at all sailing sessions. We actively promote sailing with local schools and we are part of the RYA On-Board programme. If you would like to enquire about our youth sailing programme or our work with schools do contact the office on 01892 890930 or see our website on www.bewlvalleysc.co.uk 17

The Fleets and Much, Much More The Flying Fifteens
Designed by Uffa Fox in the 1950s the Flying Fifteen still looks fabulous today and the adoption of updated materials and construction have only served to increase its appeal as a modern competitive racing boat. The Fifteen is the only keel boat class adopted by the club and we can offer capsize-free sailing coupled with truly exciting planing performance. When the wind freshens and the dinghies start retiring, we’re still flying our spinnakers and having a ball. The Flying Fifteen is one of the club’s adopted classes so we warrant our own start and with 37 boats registered we can offer good competitive racing every Sunday, even through the colder winter months when the more tippy classes tend to lose something of their appeal. We now operate a handicapping system so older boats, designated “Silver” or “Classic” according to their sail number, are given an appropriate time advantage, so even those with a modest budget can still compete with the best in the fleet.

The Fleets and Much, Much More continued Lasers
The Laser fleet is one of the strongest fleets at the club and we are fortunate to have some very quick sailors, giving us a very high standard of racing. We have over 30 boats that race at the club and we regularly attract new members, who get stuck in. We race on a Sunday and typically have 4 races during the summer and 3 in the winter. We offer regular training during the summer and have a UKLA Youth programme, with some 35 youth from all over the SE, running down at the club in the winter. As a club we also have a winter membership which runs from 1st October to the end of March each year and represents our most exciting racing period and race numbers are strong.

The Fleets and Much, Much More continued The Solo Class
The Solo dinghy has long been established as an adopted class at Bewl Valley and is now one of our fastest growing fleets. The boat is a single hander of traditional ‘one design’, originating from the 1950s and designed by Jack Holt. The hull is hard chine, in wood or composite fibre and with a low aspect ratio sail plan, relatively stable and yet exciting to sail. The class at Bewl complements the more modern and demanding single handed ‘Laser’ by being for those who want great competition without the physical demands of a ‘Laser’. The class has 34 registered boats of which 28 race, typically 10 to 15 on the start line on a Sunday morning and afternoon. The Solos have a full racing programme throughout the year, an Open meeting in April each year and an autumn Open meeting in October. In addition the club welcomes visitors to enter the March Open series for solos held over four Sundays.

The Fleets and Much, Much More continued RS and others
Bewl has a large fleet of RS asymmetric racing dinghies, including RS 200, 400 and 600. They race in our handicap fleet with a range of other exciting dinghies that test the skill and experience of even the most hardened fleet racer. Bewl is large enough to allow these boats to show their full performance, and long spinnaker reaches at full speed are both fun and furious. For the more moderate sailors there are all sorts of other racing boats at Bewl, ranging from Wayfarers, Enterprises and Comets to Toppers, Picos and Wanderers who can all compete in our handicap fleet every Sunday. We really can therefore cater for every sailor’s need and skill level.

The Fleets and Much, Much More continued The Windsurfing Fleet
Boards have been part of the club scene since the early 1980s. Prevailing wind-strengths of force 3 to 4 and some lighter days make Bewl an ideal venue for formula and larger free-ride (120L plus) boards and for newcomers to windsurfing. We still have a racing fleet of seven to eight boards – long boards and formula. We race on Saturday afternoons: mainly course racing, but sometimes slalom in stronger winds. Our best sailors can hold their own at regional level, but there is a good spread of racing ability and, as we compete for the fun of it, newcomers to racing are always welcome. Bewl is a safe venue for developing and practising windsurfing in strong winds. Rescue cover is provided at weekends all year round, and some evenings and weekdays in the summer months. Free sailing is also available on weekdays for people with RYA level 2 and above. There is a core of 25 plus regular sailors, of all ages, around a third of whom are women. New members are welcome and won’t be lost in a crowd. We run some planned social events and also enjoy unplanned post sailing conversations over a pint.

Our Training Courses
Bewl Valley Sailing Club has a full-time training school with staff dedicated to introducing the sport of sailing and helping all ages and abilities get out on to the water. We are an RYA and AALS recognised training centre and run Windsurfing, Dinghy Sailing and Powerboating courses for both adults and juniors all year round. We are active in the RYA On-Board scheme and promote sailing with local schools. We also cater for corporate events and other training activities throughout the year. In addition to recognised RYA courses for adults and children we can offer private tuition to those returning to sailing after a break who wants to refresh their skills and “learn the ropes” once more. We publish a separate Training Prospectus every year and more details are available on our website. Give us a ring on 01892 890930 or see www.bewlvalleysc.co.uk In addition to sailing we can offer first aid courses for both sailors and non-sailors alike – including First Aid at Work.
