Welcome Lying between the North and South Downs in the heart of the picturesque Hampshire countryside, Blackmoor Golf Club is a gem of a heathland course designed by the celebrated Harry Colt in 1913.

Laid out in two loops, the 18 holes comprise five par 3s, which all bear the stamp of Colt with elevated greens well guarded by bunkers, and two par 5s making up a par 69. The surroundings alone are worth a visit with the course lined by heather, gorse, silver birch, oak and fir trees. Tranquillity is also guaranteed with no road, rail or aircraft noise acting as a distraction; however the club is within easy reach of London and the Home Counties via the A3. Its free-draining sand base means the course remains playable all year round. Acting as a regional qualifier for the Open Championship between 1998 and 2003, the club is home to the Selborne Salver, one of Britain’s most prestigious amateur events, and is regularly voted one of the top 100 courses in England. The club though is still known as one of the county’s most friendly and welcoming. Golfers of all ages and abilities are most welcome at this club and the management and members all look forward to your visit.

Harry Colt and History Designed by golf course architect Harry Colt – the inspiration behind Sunningdale and the redesigns of Muirfield and Royal Liverpool – in 1913, Blackmoor still retains some distinctive trademark touches of its celebrated designer nearly a century later. Certainly the course lived up to Colt’s own maxim – “The real test of a course: is it going to live?” – with golf still played over sixteen of the holes designed by him today (the full 18 holes were completed in 1924). His principle that the course should adapt and follow, rather than be imposed upon, the natural aesthetic of the land still rings true. The lack of respite between one tricky hole and another bears Colt’s fingerprints while his goal that every club in a bag should be used during a round will apply to most golfers that set foot on the course. Blackmoor is also home to a number of amateur and professional competitions, including the Selborne Salver which attracts both international and Walker Cup players. The professional TP tour is a regular event. It is also a course often used by Hampshire Golf Union for their County Championships. From 1998 until 2003, Blackmoor was a regional qualifying course for the Open Championship where golfers from the UK, Europe, America and Africa began their quest for The Claret Jug.

Selborne Salver Blackmoor Golf Club is proud to call itself home to the Selborne Salver – one of the most prestigious amateur golf competitions in the country.

During its history, the Selborne Salver has attracted many notable Walker Cup and international players such as Justin Rose while past winners include Peter McEvoy, Gary Wolstenholme and Ross Fisher. The competition was inaugurated in its present form in 1976 and since 1978 the Salver has been linked with the Hampshire Hog, staged the next day at North Hants. The player with the lowest total over 72 holes over the weekend receives the Hampshire Salver, presented by the Hants, IoW and CI Golf Union. Some wonderful golf has been played over those two decades and old Salver hands still talk about McEvoy’s dramatic victory in 1979, when he won a titanic head-tohead against John Davies, his fellow Walker Cupper, thanks to a blistering final nine of 29 strokes. In recent times, Andy Sullivan set the tournament’s best ever score of 60 in 2011 while his two-round total of 129 was the lowest aggregate score ever in the Salver. Matthew Fitzpatrick, of Hallamshire, won the 2012 tournament. One of the many benefits from being a member at Blackmoor is being able to participate in the Wolmer Cup the day after the Salver concludes.

The Course A wonderful 18 holes of golf await you at Blackmoor where the emphasis from the first tee shot is on correct positioning rather than distance. The course is far more challenging than its 6,164 yards length would suggest with its incorporation of tricky bunkering, occasional use of water ditches and testing approaches to well-guarded greens. The greens are noted for their firmness and speed but remain true and maintain their quality all year round. However just accessing the greens can presents its own challenge with tree-lined fairways, subtle dog legs, bunkers and water hazards throughout the course placing a premium on intelligent shot selection. Stands of birch and fir abound while fine sandy soil, firm natural turf and heath effectively guarantee the quality of the golf played throughout the year. The course measures 6,164 yards, par 69 for the men off the championship tees, 5,943 yards off the visitors’ yellow tees and 5,658 yards, a par 72, for the ladies. While perhaps not the longest course, Blackmoor retains Harry Colt’s fingerprints making it both aesthetically pleasing in the heart of the Hampshire countryside while asking questions of your golfing skill from the tricky par 4 first through to the delightful eighteenth.

A gentle par 4 to start: either lay up short of the ditch which crosses the fairway at 230 yards or go for the carry. Either way you will be left with an uphill second shot to a subtle undulating green.
The only dogleg left on the course, the semi blind tee shot requires accuracy to the right side of the fairway to leave a clear view of the green.
This is the first dogleg right which requires an accurate tee shot to miss both fairway bunker on the left and heather on the right. A fade gives an ideal position for the second shot to a well-bunkered kidneyshaped green.

A tough par 4 generally played into the prevailing left to right wind. The heatherlined fairway demands an accurate tee shot, beware the out of bounds on the left. The second shot will be a mid to long iron to a narrow green well guarded by water on the right and sand on the left.
A sharp dogleg right across a ditch. A tee shot down the right side of the fairway hugging the tree line will leave a shorter second shot to the green but beware the out of bounds and a strategically placed tree. Rough and heather protect the sloping green. A par here is always satisfying.
A difficult par 3 played into the prevailing wind to an elevated green requiring a long iron or lofted wood. Miss the green and a dropped shot is on the cards.

A tough par 4 with a bunker to the left side of the fairway catching the golfer’s eye. Placing your drive to the right of this bunker will give a good line into the twotiered green which is well bunkered. A top right pin position is difficult to get close to and on this green two putting will always be a challenge.
This hole is short by modern standards and is the first of Blackmoor’s two par 5s. However, a long tee shot to the left half of the fairway will give the opportunity to go for the green in two, but beware the out of bounds to the right and deep rough and a bunker on the left.
A neat par 3 with a small well-bunkered elevated green. Even if you hit the target the difficult subtle slopes can still catch you out.

Probably the toughest driving hole on the course with an out of bounds to the right, it demands a long straight drive if you are to reach the green in two. Cross bunkers some 40 yards from the elevated green with greenside traps both left and right make for a difficult second shot. Be sure your approach shot is long enough.
Another dogleg to the right. Play to the left side of the fairway to avoid the area of deep rough and a heather bank to the right. This will leave a mid iron to a deceptively sloping green.
Played over heather banks to an elevated green which runs off on all sides. Bunkers left and right will catch the errant shot on this the shortest of Blackmoor’s par 3s.

The longest hole on the course at 512 yards, the drive needs to be accurate to miss the strategically placed bunkers left and right. The slight dogleg means the second shot needs to be precise to leave the third shot a comfortable distance to the two-tier green guarded by bunkers on both sides.
From the tee this hole looks as though it should yield a birdie. However, a misguided tee shot to the right is likely to find the water hazard which is some 230 yards from the tee. Correct club selection is vital for the second shot to avoid the bunkers left and right.
One of the most difficult par 3s in Hampshire. This well bunkered, elevated, upturned-saucer green provides a stern test.

Yet another par 4 with a tight drive. Hitting the fairway is the first target as there is treacherous thick heather both left and right. The second shot requires accuracy to miss the front right bunker and heather to the left.
Last of the par 3s played to an elevated green over thick heather. Oblique bunkers left and right call for an accurate tee shot. The heavily contoured green presents a difficult putting challenge.
Blackmoor’s signature hole and one of the best finishing holes in Hampshire. A long accurate tee shot will still leave a difficult uphill second shot with out of bounds to the left and a deep pit to the right. Practice Facilities There are several practice areas available: a 350 yards long practice range, a shortgame practice area for pitching and bunker practice, two putting greens and practice nets. The range is a particularly valuable asset to those who are learning the game and who cannot get to play on a golf course or those who just want to loosen their limbs before heading out for 18 holes. When Ben Hogan, widely regarded as the greatest ball striker the game has ever seen, was asked why he consistently played so well he remarked “the secret is in the dirt� and at Blackmoor Golf Club we are proud that our practice course is grass rather than artificial turf. As Steve Clay, our head professional, persuasively argues you only can receive a true reflection of how you have hit a shot from grass rather than a plastic matt. The short-game area allows you to measure the length of your shots with targets at 30, 50 and 70 yards while the putting areas accurately reflect the speed and firmness of the greens on the course.

Membership Blackmoor Golf Club is known as one of the friendliest clubs in the county and accommodates a wide spectrum of golfers.

We are a members’ club with around 560 golfing members. The club is run by its General Committee elected from the membership. We pride ourselves on having an active membership with a full schedule of competitions no matter what age, gender, or standard and there is also a busy and varied social calendar. There are “roll-ups” on most days which you can join or just come along with your friend and benefit from our “no tee booking” policy. The only tee bookings made are for competitions and societies. We have a wide range of memberships available which we hope will suit all needs. These are: full, five-day, country (minimum 40 miles by route planner from Blackmoor), overseas (away for six months of the year), young adults, full-time students, juniors and beginners. For those players without a handicap but knowledge of the game we have an Introductory Membership in which players can use the course at quiet times to gain their handicap. The club’s in-house catering team offer a varied and extensive range of snacks and meals throughout the day to suit any appetite and taste. Take your pick from a wide selection of sandwiches, twocourse meals or make a selection from our daily specials board – the Sunday morning bacon bap comes highly recommended. For special events there is a spacious dining room used for informal, formal and private functions. In the summer many an hour can be passed on the clubhouse’s sunny balcony overlooking the 18th green watching other golfers putting out.

An extensive and varied programme of events is organised throughout the year, particularly in the autumn and winter when the nights draw in. The social functions are very much at the heart of the membership, with the aim being that there should be something to appeal to everyone, whatever their taste in entertainment. Activities range from Beatles and Abba tribute nights to quizzes and bridge evenings. There are also very popular fine dining evenings and a recent event saw the winner of Masterchef prepare a gourmet meal for club members. Key dates in the calendar such as New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day are always celebrated in style. New members to the club are made to feel like they have belonged to Blackmoor all their lives, such is the camaraderie that exists amongst the membership. It is no surprise that existing members are just as proud of the social side of the club as they are of its magnificent course.

The club appreciate that organising a society day is not always easy, finding a suitable course at a competitive price can be challenging. We can help and will ensure you receive the necessary care and attention to ensure your day runs smoothly Easily accessible from both London and the Home Counties, Blackmoor is a true delight to play with its heather-lined fairways and classic shaped greens. The club offers society packages throughout the year and there is a minimum requirement of twelve players to form a society. There are three package options to select from: Colt Coffee & bacon bap on arrival; 18 holes of golf; light lunch. Blackmoor Coffee & bacon bap on arrival; 18 holes of golf; two-course meal. Selborne Coffee & bacon bap on arrival; 36 holes of golf; light lunch; three-course evening meal . Societies are required to provide a list of its members’ handicaps beforehand and adhere to our dress code – details of which will be sent to you upon your booking. Tee times need to be arranged in advance with our Secretary and societies are asked to play off the yellow tees. Visitors Visitors are warmly welcomed to Blackmoor from Monday to Friday and on Sunday afternoons subject to course loading throughout the year. You can look forward to an outstanding round of golf on our beautiful heathland course while enjoying access to our friendly clubhouse. Visitors frequently comment on how at home they feel around our members. Catering, including an excellent bacon bap, is available in the bar from 10am and there is a halfway hut open every day except Tuesday. Please note that as Blackmoor is a members’ club, we do not operate actual tee-time slots so it is highly advisable to call ahead to find the best times to visit. We are a relaxed club, however we would ask visitors to register on arrival at the Pro Shop. Visitors should hold a current handicap and be ready to show their certificate if asked on registration. In common with many other clubs, we do have a formal dress code at all times. Blue denim is not permitted nor are any football, rugby and cricket shirts or tracksuits while correct golf shoes should be worn at all times. We also ask visitors to respect our rules and adhere to standard golfing etiquette to ensure their visit runs as smoothly as possible. Hence mobile phones must be in silent ringing mode, used only in an emergency and with the consent of one’s playing partners.
