Welcome Welcome to Brixham Yacht Club Firstly, let me say how pleased I am that you have picked up this brochure and welcome to Brixham Yacht Club. Our club is a vibrant place to be with numerous sailing and social events throughout the year. Let’s start with sailing and a typical year. Crane in for the larger boats is usually early April, and from then on there are races most Thursday nights with occasional regattas. This year we are host to two visiting championships and are always willing to discuss hosting further championships. In August we are part of Torbay Week when the Bay becomes full of boats, which is a wonderful sight. There is also a cruising section which organises cruises to various destinations on the South Coast. We also have a very active junior sailing club based here which meets on Monday nights and where fully-qualified instructors introduce youngsters to the joys of sailing. Our social side is also active. The bar is open every day of the week serving food every day during the summer. We hold a number of special evenings during the year including St George’s Night and of course Trafalgar Night, due to Napoleon’s visit here. These evenings are always well attended. The members of staff are always helpful and eager to please and welcome everyone who comes through our doors. I hope that this snapshot of our club will encourage you to visit either to sail or just for a drink so that you can enjoy the superb views from our clubhouse.

Adrian Morrall,

Commodore

History of Brixham Yacht Club Brixham Yacht Club is the largest club in Torbay, with more than 1,000 members, and prides itself on providing both first class sailing and social facilities. Founded in 1937, the club is fortunate in owning its own freehold premises, which were once a sail loft, net and fish-drying shed. Perched high above the waterfront of the outer harbour, the views from the clubhouse are probably the best in Torbay, with a panorama from Berry Head to Hopes Nose and the whole of Lyme Bay beyond. The large size of the club allows the employment of full-time staff including club manager, bosun, bar staff and chefs. This allows our full-time opening for use of all facilities including provision of bar and restaurant meals every lunchtime and evening. The only exception is Sunday evenings when everyone has a hard-earned evening off. The club possesses a number of its own boats including our well known club launch shuttle, which operates a comprehensive water taxi service around the harbour every weekend and bank holiday. In wintertime, the compound is full of stored yachts, with their owners busily preparing for the season ahead, and in the evenings a full programme of social events keeps the bar and restaurant full to bursting point. We manage to do all these things only via the efforts of our two committees, Sailing and House, using lots of volunteers to back up our full-time staff. The result is a highly successful sailing club with a great reputation that is also one of the cheapest to join on the South Coast!

Clubhouse information The upper part of the clubhouse contains the main bar and separate restaurant known as the Jubilee Room. This provides a most welcoming venue for socialising, with complete glass walls facing the waterside, and arguably the best views in Torbay. Our chefs provide excellent lunches and evening meals throughout the week, whilst the bar always stocks real ale and a comprehensive selection of competitively priced wines and spirits. Tables can be booked either within the main bar or the Jubilee Room. The latter provides private dining if you prefer for up to 40 people, and is often booked for functions ranging from weddings to birthday parties. The main bar can seat up to 100, which is often the case on club dining evenings, of which there are on average two a month throughout the year. The social side of the club is highly valued and well supported, with ladies’ weekday lunches, quizzes, charity poker nights, talks and tasting evenings going on throughout both summer and winter. We are fortunate in having on-site car parking in three separate areas. Having such local car parking is very unusual in crowded Brixham, and proves very popular, especially on race nights. One of the smaller compounds can be completely covered over, and is the popular venue for summer BBQs since it is right by the water and landing steps meaning you can get food and drink without climbing the steps up to the clubhouse! The large compound can take the biggest marquee, which we regularly erect for corporate events such as the Mumfords and Fulfords challenges. Here we can cater for up to 400 guests with food and music after a day’s hard sailing.

House Events During the year we try to put on a programme of social events and provide something that will appeal to all our members. These include dining evenings, when we celebrate such events as Burns Night, Trafalgar Day, St Patrick’s Day, St George’s Day, Valentine’s Day and Beaujolais Night. These events usually include not only a good meal but appropriate music as well. On New Year’s Eve we hold a themed party and we have the club annual dinner in March. Monthly social events include quiz evenings, ladies’ lunch club and curry evenings. During the winter months, while our sailors are off the water, there are cruising suppers and sailing talks and we even put on occasional games evenings and poker nights. At Christmas you can join us for special Christmas Sunday lunches or you can book your group for a party night. We also do a big Christmas draw on the Saturday before Christmas and a Chocolate draw just before Easter! All of our events will be advertised in the club and on our website, but you can always find out from our bar staff. It is always advisable to book in advance for any event and this can be done via the bar. The bar and restaurant are open every lunchtime and evening except Sunday night and again it is advisable to book, especially if you want a table in the window to enjoy our spectacular view.

Racing Information The club runs Thursday evening racing from April to September. We have three fleets, an IRC fleet which regularly dominates local events, a competitive Corinthian fleet for those who are new to racing, and those without IRC certificates. We also have a Sonata One Design Class. Our fleets are growing and we always welcome new boats. The Thursday evening racing generally consists of a keenly-contested six-race series run over successive weeks, with the best four results from each competitor to count. Prizes are awarded to both BYC entrants and visitors in the individual classes. Coastal and some Sunday racing is also provided, ranging from racing around the bay to races along the coastline and weekends away. Some of these have included weekends to Salcombe, races to the Exe Buoy and the Skerries. Like the racing on Thursdays, competition for the Weekend Series follows a six-race format, however there is the occasional weekend off from this competition to accommodate other key events in the racing calendar. Worst scores can again be discarded, though for the Weekend Series and other special races IRC, Corinthian and Sonata boats race as one class under a BYC Adjustable handicap system. The whole season’s programme is listed on the club website: www.brixhamyachtclub.com

Visitors are welcome to take part in club races and a visitors’ entry form is available. Full NOR & SI are available on our website. In addition, Brixham Yacht Club is part of the South Devon Cruising & Racing Committee, enabling racing sailors to take part in races run by several clubs in South Devon. Cruising Information Brixham Yacht Club have a very successful cruising section within the club which is aimed at people of all ages whatever their sailing experience, at those with their own boat, whatever its type or size, and at those who just want to crew. We have some wonderful sailing around Brixham and beyond and you can sail in confidence knowing that help is at hand whenever you need it. We have an active social life with meals at our destination and continue with cruising suppers during the winter months. Our cruising section has grown from just a handful of people when we started in 2008 to now numbering more than 100, all with the same interest at heart. Our cruising is also very social, with sundowners before our evening meal when we are on the water during the summer months. The moorings and the evening meal are often booked in advance. When the cold winter months are upon us we continue our social activities with our monthly cruising suppers from October through to March. Our first supper incorporates a photographic competition with prizes in three categories. We also present the Bernard Mead Cup to the person who has achieved the most during their cruising. Then we have a talk from our Commodore. For the rest of our cruising suppers we invite a guest speaker and to date we have had some varied and very interesting people.

Shoreside Facilities - Visiting Yachtsmen and Championships Our waterfront facilities have recently been completely renewed and rebuilt, since the original dinghy slipway and launch landing steps had to be removed to make way for the new Brixham Fish Quay redevelopment facilities. A brand new slipway, landing steps and substantial section of the new quay wall have been completed for our sole use, replacing those facilities which were lost when the old slipway was filled in. In addition, since changes were required to realign the public rights of way along the South West coast path, our boat storage compound has altered boundaries, with a resulting increase in storage space, for which we are most grateful when it comes to running external events. Boat storage is available in one of three separate compounds and includes secure undercover storage for tender engines and oars. Fees are payable depending on type of boat and length of stay. Visitors are welcome to moor either on our two 50ft visitor pontoons (afloat at all times), or against a BYC dedicated stretch of the new fish quay harbour wall (tidal with ladders). The cost in 2011 is 45p per foot per night (with a fourth night free), payable to the Bosun or in the bar. The maximum length is 40 ft and no reservations can be made.

Shoreside Facilities - Visiting Yachtsmen and Championships (continued)

Space is provided for boats to raft up to three deep in all locations. In the near future we intend to extend this facility to four pontoons to cater for the ever-increasing demand for visitors’ moorings in this part of the harbour. It is only a very short row to the steps. In addition we have a private dinghy slipway and set of access steps right down to low water springs level. Larger towed boats can be launched on the immediately adjacent public slipway administered by the Brixham harbourmaster and his staff. At weekends and on Thursday evenings during the sailing season we operate a water taxi service via our well-known diesel launch “Shuttle”. Contact is best made on VHF channel 32 (M1,P1). This free service is not available during championships. We often pick up visitors from the marina to land them at our club steps for a visit to the main clubhouse. Water is available via hose from our dinghy compound, whilst diesel fuel is available just down the fairway at the marina fuel pontoon. Battery charging can be performed by arrangement with the Bosun. The clubhouse facilities include ladies’ and gents’ showers, toilets and changing facilities, all of which are now very smartly retiled as a result of club volunteers getting their hands dirty and helping out. These together with the club office and stores are all located in the lower section of the building, which can be accessed direct from the water front via the rear steps from one of the club’s three storage compounds.

Recent Championships Brixham Yacht Club has played host to many dinghy championships and open weekends. In the past few years alone we have had the Miracles, Enterprises and the Larks all holding their national championships here with us. We have a dedicated team of volunteers and Race Officers who endeavour to give the sailors the best week of sailing they can, and teamed with the fantastic sailing conditions that the Bay is famous for, BYC offers a fantastic venue for championships. In 2010, we held the Larks and Enterprises back-to-back at the end of July and the beginning of August. It was a tiring week for all involved at the club, but great fun! We were blessed with good sailing weather virtually every day, and provided both classes with some good racing - with gate starts as well! Off the water we provided entertainment every night in the bar, including hot meals for the sailors, and live music, DJ’s games and fancy dress. Our facilities mean that it is easy for us to provide entertainment, food and drink every night of the championships, and both rounded off their weeks nicely with a fantastic prizegiving in what was a great atmosphere. We have several interested fleets and clubs for the next few years, but still have some spaces left, so if you are interested, please contact the club for more information.

Torbay Week Torbay Week has fast proved to be one of the best regattas on the South Coast and we’re sure this year will be just as successful with great racing for a wide variety of sailing vessels, along with tons of after-sail fun at Torbay’s sailing and yachting clubs. Having the four sailing clubs of Torbay (Babbacombe, Brixham, Paignton and Torquay) combining resources for Torbay Week means that we can manage up to six courses in Tor Bay in order to cater for all types of yachts and dinghies. The setting couldn’t be better, either, with the large, sheltered bay providing fantastic sailing conditions in a climate that is noted as being much warmer than the rest of the UK. Its horseshoe shape means lots of opportunities for spectators to see the action close-up, too. There is an immense amount of holiday accommodation available so book up early. The entry form is now available, so don’t forget to enter! For the form and more information, visit the official Torbay Week website at www.torbayweek.co.uk Should you miss out in 2011 (dates 20th to 23rd August 2011 ), make a note in your diary for the following year: Torbay Week 2012 will be from Friday August 17 to Wednesday August 22, with the main events over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Junior Sailing Brixham Junior Sailing Club is a registered charity providing sail training for local people from 11 years upwards. Before 2003 the club was part of BYC and is still supported by the senior club. BJSC is totally run by volunteers, is affiliated to the RYA and all instructors are RYA qualified. A small subscription is charged each season to cover overheads and basic certification costs. The club owns Wayfarers, Picos, Toppers and one very modern RS Feva. Beginners always go out in the large stable Wayfarers with an instructor, while second and third-year juniors are encouraged to skipper themselves and take part in light-hearted races and fun sailing. Basic training takes place on Tuesday evenings from the main BYC compound with additional racing and safety boat cover provided on Monday evenings. The sailing club is very much part of the local community and boats are made available to local school groups on a regular basis. Every year a fun RNLI charity race is held where juniors are invited to helm the larger club racing yachts together with their regular adult crews, a chance for the juniors to boss the adults around.
