Welcome

Whilst retaining valuable traditions our club is also progressive, with facilities in keeping with any modern-day club.

Golf in the Heart of the Cotswolds Welcome to Cirencester Golf Club, situated in beautiful Cotswold countryside, just north of the historic town of Cirencester. Our Golf Club offers a traditional welcoming atmosphere and a picturesque and interesting course kept in wonderful condition throughout the year. Many of the holes are virtually unchanged from architect James Braid’s original design and offer wonderful views over the surrounding countryside, the course is built on free-draining limestone so remains playable all year round. Whilst retaining its valuable traditions, Cirencester Golf Club is also progressive, with facilities in keeping with any modernday club. Our well-stocked shop offers a wide range of the latest clubs, clothing and accessories, trolleys and buggies may be hired.

The recently refurbished Clubhouse, now with a spike bar, offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Our well stocked bar has a wide range of real ales, and quality fresh home cooked food is prepared by our chef Steve and his team. Sunday lunch is very popular and early booking is highly recommended. Before your round you can perfect your swing by using the on site, five bay, driving range with bunker and chipping green. We do not have pre-booked tee times so members and visitors can turn up and play whenever they wish, subject to pre booked events and fixtures. Our Course The 18 hole parkland course at Cirencester possesses a charm that’s distinctively its own. At 6,030 yards, par 70, our excellent greens are demanding and, with no two holes the same, offer a challenging test of golf for all handicap levels. The course was originally designed in 1910 by world famous golfer and architect, James Braid, and many of the holes remain unchanged. In 1996, however, three new holes were incorporated into the layout. These offer a challenging finish to the round along with glorious views over the pretty Cotswold village of Baunton. Cirencester is playable throughout the year thanks to free draining limestone, and the course is rarely closed, and only in severe winter weather. With our own water supply and irrigation system, we are able to keep the course in top condition throughout even the driest of summers.

The course was originally designed by world famous golfer and architect, James Braid The club has a rolling programme to maintain and improve the quality of greens and bunkers. Extensive tree planting has taken place in recent years in order to enhance the landscape whilst keeping the general concept of an Edwardian course. Cirencester Golf Club is also home to a Par 3, 6 hole, Academy course great for practising your short game and well used by the juniors. The Club is in the fairly unique position of not requiring a tee booking system for members or visitors. Generally you can get straight on the first tee without having to wait. The obvious exceptions will be for society bookings, club matches and competitions when the tee will be booked. The course is open from 8am throughout the year, and closes at dusk.

Local Wildlife Situated in the heart of the Cotswolds, and with gently undulating hills and fantastic views towards the town of Cirencester and the Marlborough Downs beyond, our course - is home to an abundance of flora and fauna. Offering magnificent views over the yellow Cotswold stone houses of Baunton, as you play your challenging round, you will notice a beautiful array of trees and hedgerows teeming with wildlife.

As you play your eye will pass over a beautiful array of trees and hedgerows teeming with wildlife We work tirelessly to protect wildlife at Cirencester,- and we are always looking to enhance the landscape with extensive planting and bulb-growing programmes. In 2010, as part of our centenary celebrations our Seniors section placed bird nesting boxes around the course and these encouraged the rich variety of birds that you can see during your round. We have several species of deer, the occasional badger and fox, buzzards, red kites and many different and rare butterflies during the spring and summer months. Wild orchids can also be spotted during the summer months in the wild grasslands on the valley of the 4th hole.

Take The Course Tour Hole 1

Hole 4

A gentle par 4 opener. Avoid the bunkers and concentrate on distance control into a three-level sloping green.

A signature James Braid hole, with steep banks framing a difficult drive. Favour the left side with your approach into a severe back-to-front sloping green.

Hole 2 Club selection is vital as the wind, the two-tier well bunkered green and out of bounds on the right are all to be considered

Hole 3 A demanding drive up and over a left-to-right sloping fairway. An accurate downhill approach gives a chance to pick up a shot.

Hole 5 The shortest of the par 4s. Place your tee shot to avoid a sloping lie before a tricky approach to a narrow green with deep slopes from front to back.

Hole 6 A generous par 4. Favour the left side off the tee to allow a short second shot into a long thin green.

www.cirencestergolfclub.co.uk

11

Take The Course Tour continued Hole 7

The tightest driving hole on the course. The second shot requires the ball to be carried over a bunker so choose your club wisely.

Hole 8 Out of bounds on the left but plenty of room on the right. Good distance control will reward your second shot.

Hole 9 A well-protected par 3 with out of bounds on the left and bunkers on the front right. Missing short leaves a straightforward chip onto a large putting surface.

12

www.cirencestergolfclub.co.uk

Hole 10 Keep your drive close to the right side but avoid any bunkers. Requires accuracy to avoid more bunkers around the green.

Hole 11 Another long par 3 which usually plays the same club as the 9th. Good bunkering surrounds a flat putting surface.

Hole 12 A long par 5 with out of bounds on the right. Avoid the fairway bunkers with your approach. With a sloping green, chipping from the left or right is a difficult up and down.

Hole 13

Hole 16

Check the flag position as you walk down the 12th. A shortish par 3, well bunkered with an undulating green.

A short but dangerous par 4 to an upturned saucer green with the three levels. Stay left off the tee to make the second shot easier.

Hole 14 Your tee shot usually finishes left, following the fairway camber. Out of bounds again up the right hand side, with an uphill second to a green with run off areas.

Hole 15 Avoid the large fairway bunker off the tee and take enough club to attack a sloping green with bunkers on the left.

Hole 17 Favour the left side off the tee to allow safe negotiation of the fairway bunkers with your second shot. A narrow elevated sloping green requires a precise approach.

Hole 18 A tough par 3 to finish played from an elevated tee with out of bounds on the right. Club selection is vital as the flat green can only be half seen from the tee. www.cirencestergolfclub.co.uk

The Club’s History Golf has been played in Cirencester since 1893 when ‘an area of old pastures’ belonging to the Earl Bathurst at Park Corner, Sapperton, was laid out as a golf course. Because of many problems of upkeep with limited resources and problems of transport out of town, it was decided to look for another venue closer to Cirencester. Eventually, some land was bought and other fields leased in order to establish a golf course on its present site. Now, however, the club owns all the land.

Golf has been played in Cirencester since 1893 On 3 March 1909, James Braid visited the site in order to discuss the design. However, because of snow covering the ground he had to make another visit! In laying out the course, Braid used the natural features to advantage and there was little need to do more than build tees, establish greens and put in the fifty or so bunkers. The tees were not particularly large or elevated. Greens were mostly square-shaped and established on ground which was reasonably level, although a considerable bank had to be built up to make a flat area for the 3rd green.

The Club’s History continued The course is situated about 2 miles north of Cirencester, on the Cheltenham Road and the topography is varied and described as ‘situated on a rolling plateau, where the eastern slopes of the Cotswold’s die away to the plain’. Part of the course, including the clubhouse, is situated in the parish of Bagendon, but most of it is in the parish of Baunton. Cirencester Golf Club is a James Braid (1870-1950) designed course. It was opened for play on May 5th 1910, when Braid and Harry Vardon played an exhibition match in the morning and a four ball with local professionals in the afternoon (Braid went on to win the ‘Open’ seven weeks later!)

The course has remained much as Braid designed it, though boundary walls within the course were removed, several bunkers redesigned and new ones recently established to take into account greater distances achieved with modern equipment. In both World Wars much of the course was given up for agricultural purposes and play was limited to a few holes. In the mid-1990s, when a bypass around Cirencester was built, the inevitable land loss meant that the club would have to build three new holes. These were constructed from a Donald Steel design and opened for play in late 1996. A detailed history of the club 1893-1993, illustrated with many photographs, was published on 30th October 1993.

Children of all ages are welcome at Cirencester Golf Club. At present we have over 50 children signed up to the Teaching Academy, which runs on Saturday mornings and throughout the week during school holidays.

During the junior coaching sessions there are three things I always ensure:

All juniors are grouped together in terms of age and ability. Ages range from 6 - 14 years. This is to ensure that within the lesson children feel happy and comfortable, in the knowledge that they are grouped with children of similar capabilities. Â Sessions run from 9am - 10am, 10am - 11am, 11am - 12pm. The 2014 prices for these sessions are ÂŁ4.50 a session or ÂŁ22.50 for 6 sessions.

1. Health and Safety - to make sure the children are safe at all times 2. Enjoyment - I believe that children learn more when they are having fun. Therefore I ensure all sessions are designed to challenge and motivate, whilst bringing the enjoyment factor. 3. Learn - I pride myself in the knowledge that children are constantly improving their skills, and are always eager to come back.

Social Activities At Cirencester Golf Club we do not only wish to be considered as the place to enjoy a challenging and pleasurable round of golf. The social side of life is also important to us. This is why, throughout the year, we stage a number of lively and engaging events to entertain members and visitors alike. Whether it is enjoying a traditional roast with family and friends at our Regular Sunday Lunches or taking part in one of the popular Race nights, there is no shortage of opportunities off the course to spend time with old friends or, indeed, make new ones.

there is no shortage of opportunities off the course to spend time with old friends or, indeed, make new ones We host every kind of occasion from fundraising dinner dances, charity events, Italian meals and cowboy shows! If there is a notable event marked in the diary, chances are something has been planned to celebrate it at the Club. Social members are always welcome at our regular events - from dinner dances to live bands. We celebrate the festive season with our Annual Christmas party with meal and dancing, and at our New Year’s Eve party we end the year with a bang! For more details of upcoming social events, please see our web site.

Open Events and Championships At Cirencester we have 6 well established Open Competitions across the sections Men’s, Ladies, Seniors, Juniors and Club. These are staged between May and August, and offer a varied and fun day out with the possibility of winning some great prizes. The first event in the year is our very popular Seniors Open, held on the 20th May. The format is individual stableford with a maximum handicap of 21. We typically have more than 40 clubs represented, and early booking is a must as this is always oversubscribed.

Early in June on the 5th is the Ladies Open Eclectic, which is played over 27 holes with the preferred scores to count. In July we host 3 Opens. The first is the Mixed Greensomes, on the 13th, for the prestigious Corinium Goblets, with the Men’s Bowmaker Team Event on Friday 19th July. At the end of the month we have the Junior Festival Week with the Junior Open on Tuesday 29th July; this event is for boys and girls of all abilities and will be a great fun day. The final event is the Ladies’ Open Bowmaker for teams of 3, held on Thursday 7th August. A meal is included in the entry fee for all but the Men’s Open and Junior Open events and for these two events catering is available at very reasonable prices.
